iQOO Z6x could be rebranded version of this phone

On Aug. 25, iQOO will unveil the iQOO Z6 and iQOO Z6x smartphones in China. Yesterday, a premature product listing of the Z6 appeared on China Telecom’s website, through which its entire specifications were revealed. As far as the iQOO Z6x is concerned, the company has revealed that it is equipped with a 6,000mAh battery. Some other details suggest that it might be a rebranded or slightly changed version of an existing T-series Vivo phone.

The image of the iQOO Z6x that has appeared in its pre-order listing on JD.com has revealed its rear design. It also shows that the device comes with dual rear-facing cameras and a fingerprint scanner on the side.

Alleged Sony Xperia 5 IV spotted on FCC with 6-inch display and more

Sony is currently known for releasing three smartphones a year: Xperia 1, Xperia 10, and Xperia 5. The fourth generation (IV) of the former two models was announced a few months back. Now, as we are halfway through the year, the company may finally release the new iteration of the latter handset since it seems to have been certified by FCC.

Sony Xperia 5 III
Sony Xperia 5 III

An upcoming Sony smartphone has been spotted on FCC by Sumaho Digest (via NotebookCheck). This device is said to launch as Xperia 5 IV.

As per the listing, the phone’s display will measure 153.5mm diagonally, which roughly translates to 6-inch. Further, it will come equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack and a USB Type-C port.

Further, the handset will offer WiFi 6 and NFC with support for FeliCa for the Japanese market. Interestingly, it will also carry support for wireless charging. For the unaware, its predecessors were limited to wired charging.

Unfortunately, that’s all the information we have on the Sony Xperia 5 IV for now. It is not known whether the device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip or Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC.

However, we can expect it to come with a 120Hz OLED display, IP68 water resistance, a triple camera system, and dual stereo speakers. The phone could be announced at the IFA trade show, which is scheduled for September 2 to 6.

Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch models set to enter mass production this year

Apple has already announced the M2 chipset under its Apple Silicon lineup and has also launched the first MacBook powered by the new processor. Now, the company is gearing up to expand the lineup of Mac devices with the M2 series chips.

In line with that, it is being reported that the Cupertino-based technology giant is all set to start the mass production of Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch models powered by the new chipset sometime in the fourth quarter of this year.

Apple MacBook Pro

The new report coming from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also adds that the company won’t be using the 3nm chipset produced by TSMC but will instead stick with the 5nm chip. This contradicts previous reports which claimed that the M2 Pro and Max would be manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm process.

The Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch models were launched by the company last year, powered by the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. So, we expect the upcoming refreshed version of the laptop to be powered by the M2 Pro and M2 Max processors.

Whatever the case, it’s almost confirmed that TSMC will soon start manufacturing new chips for Apple based on the 3nm process, and it’s just a matter of time to see which MacBook device ends up being the first to come powered by the 3nm chips.

Google Pixel 6a performed well in JerryRigEverything’s durability tests

The recently released Google Pixel 6a has appeared on JerryRigEverything’s YouTube channel. That means that the device has been put through the paces of several durability tests. A short YouTube video from the channel detailed the durability tests, and the Pixel 6a performed well.Google Pixel 6a

The Pixel 6s had been the subject of intense speculations before its eventual release. The JerryRigEverything video lasted for about 6 minutes. The durability tests included scratch, heat, and bend tests. Overall, the Pixel 6a had a decent performance. The scratch test began by testing the phone’s Gorilla Glass 3 display. A level 6 pick was able to scratch the glass and deeper grooves at level 7. This underscores the vulnerability of the Gorilla Glass 3 protection. However, the fingerprint scanner still retained its ability to pick fingerprints.

The video showed the phone’s metal frames and plastic antenna lines around it. There is also a black rubber ring on the SIM card tray as protection against water. The camera visor of the Pixel 6a is covered by plastic material, while the phone’s backplate is also made of plastic. The plastic-covered areas of the Pixel 6a are much more susceptible to scratches than the glass components. The flame test resulted in a staying time of 10 seconds for the phone under direct heat. This also resulted in the pixels turning off but seems to have recovered afterward.

The Pixel 6a did not break during the bend test. It withstood pressure from the front and back sides. There was minimal dispersion of the display but it reverted to its original position quickly. On the whole, the Google Pixel 6a passed the JerryRigEverything durability tests.

Samsung Breaks Ground on New $15 Billion Semiconductor R&D Complex in South Korea

Samsung Electronics on Friday broke ground for a new semiconductor research and development complex in Giheung, South Korea, with the goal of extending its leadership in cutting-edge semiconductor technology.

Samsung R&D facility South Korea

The South Korean tech giant intends to invest approximately KRW 20 trillion ($15 billion) by 2028 in the complex, which will span approximately 109,000 square meters on its Giheung campus. The new facility will apparently spearhead advanced research on next-generation devices and processes for memory and system semiconductors, as well as the development of innovative new technologies based on the company’s long-term roadmap.

Samsung hopes to surpass the restrictions of semiconductor scaling and strengthen its competitive edge in semiconductor technology by establishing the new R&D facility.

Back in 2019, Samsung stated intentions to spend KRW 133 trillion ($100 billion today, $115 billion in 2019) on semiconductor R&D by 2030. The business devoted KRW 73 trillion ($54.6 billion) to R&D operations in South Korea, thus investing $15 billion in a single R&D site fits perfectly with this strategy.

The new R&D center will collaborate with Samsung’s existing R&D line in Hwaseong (which focuses on memory, system LSI, and foundry technologies) and the company’s Pyeongtaek production complex.

“Our new state-of-the-art R&D complex will become a hub for innovation where the best research talent from around the world can come and grow together,” said President Kye Hyun Kyung, who also heads the Device Solutions (DS) Division. “We expect this new beginning will lay the foundation for sustainable growth of our semiconductor business.”

It is Samsung’s first semiconductor R&D facility of this scale and will fuel the company’s ambitions to create more competitive logic and memory chips.
