Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 Unboxing: The Thinnest Foldable Phone

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v087FDUjEk[/embedyt]

Ever since Xiaomi made the MIX Fold first generation, it doesn’t seem to have received the attention it deserved. I personally feel that it is probably one of the biggest failures in Xiaomi’s smartphone lineup. But recently, Xiaomi tried making a comeback in this category with a new foldable, and here is our unboxing of the MIX Fold 2.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 unboxing 27

The box of MIX Fold 2 is just like other foldable phones, meaning its very big. The box is opened in a pull-out and flip-book style, which is also a way to show the MIX Fold 2’s premium status in the Xiaomi phone family. After taking out this piece of cardboard, the MIX Fold 2 is shown in front of our eyes.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 unboxing 26As usual, we’ll first put the phone aside, and look at the accessories inside. First, theres the usual 67w charger and data cable. You also get an instruction manual and a SIM Card pin.  The most special thing is this protective case. The ugly transparent case that comes with the Xiaomi 12S Ultra has finally been replaced with a vegan leather case, and this one has a bar. It can make your phone stand up. That’s right, this is a really high-end phone case, not the usual cheap one.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 unboxing 22

There are two ways to make a foldable phone: one is to make the Foldable phone as perfect as possible without worrying much about sizing and weight, such as Samsung’s Z Fold series and Vivo’s X Fold. The other is to make it as light and small as possible, you know to present it like a normal phone after folding, such as OPPO Find N and Xiaomi MIX Fold 2.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 review 19Look at the thickness, it is even thinner than iPad mini. And it’s thinner than most Foldable phones of the same type. If you’re still not sure how thin it is, take three coins and stack them up, it’s about that thick. Plus, it is one of the lightest among other foldable phones, so it really feels like a very compact mini tablet in your hand. When you close it up, it’s a little heavier and thicker than a normal phone, but it’s also within an acceptable range. If you want to buy a foldable phone, but you want it to be thin and light enough, then OPPO Find N and MIX Fold 2 are definitely one of the choices.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 review 07

But I’m sure you’ll choose the MIX Fold 2 because two screens are better than the Find N. First, this 21:9 screen outside, the display area is straight, the right side of the protective glass has a curve, gesture operation is more comfortable, and at the same time, it will not affect the display. The protective glass is Corning Victus, and the bezel is also very narrow. And most importantly, it has 120Hz refresh rate. The screen inside is also a top screen, using UTG glass, and the creases are at the same level as the Vivo X Fold. It’s notable that the Eco² OLED panel is used this time, and the biggest benefit is that it’s more power efficient. I’m looking forward to seeing how much longer the MIX Fold 2 lasts in the full review battery life test.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 unboxing 06

Speaking of battery life, the MIX Fold 2 is packed with two batteries totaling 4500mAh. Although every foldable phone has a similar battery capacity, Xiaomi should have put a lot of effort into it considering it’s such a thin and light body. What’s Equally surprising is the fact that even at only 5mm thick, an IMX 766 main camera has been put in there. With Leica’s tuning, I believe that photography should not be the shortcoming of MIX Fold 2.

The MIX Fold 2 was delayed until today, I believe a big reason for that was to wait for the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Without that chip, the Snapdragon 888+ or 8 Gen 1 would definitely make this phone’s battery drain a lot faster. We also probably run some benchmarks, and the scores can be paused for a closer look. The details of the camera test and game test will be further analyzed in our upcoming Full review, so stay tuned.

Xiaomi customized the MIUI Fold 13 system for the MIX Fold 2. Compared to the first gen system that was copied from the tablet, this system still has a lot of changes. For example, the layout has changed, there are more desktop icons, and many APPs have been optimized for layout. Gestures have also been added, such as a three-finger horizontal swipe to quickly split the screen. There are also various uses of multi-window, such as playing Genshin while using the map tools, and perhaps watching a video. The initial experience is that the MIUI Fold system is still good.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 review 05

As we all know, when a phone gets lighter and thinner, it must come at a price. Mix Fold 2 is certainly not perfect, and there are some drawbacks that we knew even before we got the phone. For example, there is no wireless charging, which makes sense since wireless charging coils lead to a thicker body. The PC mode on the MIX Fold first gen has also been removed. In order to reduce weight, the hinge is simplified a lot, so it has a very small staying angle. This means that in many scenarios you are not able to use this device like the X Fold or Z Fold.

Okay, that’s all from our MIX Fold 2 Unboxing today. Are you satisfied with this MIX Fold 2 after the first look? I think it meets my expectations for the Xiaomi Foldable phone. Of course, the camera and performance are still not tested, so I can’t still give you a final verdict.

But what do you think of the phone so far? Let us know in the comments down below.

WhatsApp native Windows app launched, macOS version on the way

Earlier this year, WhatsApp enabled linking the account to a desktop computer. This feature allows users to make and receive calls and send messages without having their smartphone connected to the internet.

whatsapp china

Now, the company has launched a native Windows app that no longer uses the old web-based backend and has been updated to run natively on Windows. The new app can be downloaded from the Microsoft App Store.

The native app is more smooth and more optimized compared to the web-based version. The interface has also been redesigned to look cleaner and more consistent with the Windows interface.

Users will still need to link it to a smartphone account that’s linked to a phone number. Once your devices are connected, you can use end-to-end encryption to send and receive messages, make WhatsApp calls, and more. Up to four linked devices can be utilized when your phone is offline, but after 14 days have passed since your last usage of your phone, linked devices will be automatically logged out.

A native macOS software from WhatsApp will also be released, however, it is still in the works. The WhatsApp MacOS software is now in closed beta testing and will be released as a MacOS “Universal app,” which means it will be built on the WhatsApp iPhone app and run natively on Apple silicon laptops.

Razer Leviathan V2 X monitor sound bar launched in China for ¥899 ($133)

After its launch in April, Razer has now introduced the Leviathan V2 X monitor sound bar in China. The Razer Leviathan V2 X is a small soundbar with a length of about 40cm. It can snugly fit under a monitor or other displays. The Leviathan V2 X has two full-range units and dual passive radiators to deliver a decent sound output. It can be connected via its USB-C port in addition to Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. The USB-C port also serves as the charging port for the soundbar.Razer Leviathan V2 X

The Leviathan V2 X offers a variety of dynamic lighting modes and can also be used for gaming. It is also lightweight, weighing just 0.85kg, unlike the V2 at up to 3kg. Notably, the Leviathan V2 X has lower specifications than the Leviathan V2 computer soundbar that comes with a sub-woofer and is more expensive at 1,999 yuan (~$295).

The V2 X soundbar lacks an HDMI connection which is seen as a drawback. It also does not have a 3.5mm jack or an optical audio port. This makes routing multiple audio sources to be impossible, apart from the USB-C and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity.

The product comes at an introductory price of 899 yuan ($133) but the original price is 1,099 yuan ($162). Razer expects competitive pricing, coupled with its basic features, to spur substantial demand for the Leviathan V2 X soundbar.

Now, a lot of people are wondering, given the affordable price of the Amazfit, whether they should buy the new Xiaomi smart band or Huami’s one. This is a comparison between the specifications of the Xiaomi Band 7 and the Amazfit Band 7 which will hopefully clear your ideas in regards and tell you which of these two wearables has the best value for money.

Design and display

The Xiaomi Band 7 has the most attractive design. Thanks to the presence of a smaller display with an oval shape, it is more similar to a band and is more compact. It is definitely one of the most beautiful smart bands on the market. The central part fits perfectly in the band without going outside its perimeter, that is one of the reasons why it is very ergonomic. Instead, the Amazfit Band 7 has a more squarish and less attractive design due to its rectangular display. Both the wearables come with a silicone strap offered in several color options and they are waterproof up to 5 ATM (or 50 meters).

They have no physical key because they can be controlled through the touch screen, and the sensors are placed on the rear side, so they are not visible while the user is wearing them. Talking about the display, the Amazfit Band 7 is more comfortable to use due to its wider rectangular panel. The Xiaomi Band 7 has a very high pixel density, but its display is smaller and it is better for those who do not need it for everything they do and prefer to see all the data in the official app. Both the wearables are equipped with AMOLED displays showing brilliant colors and deeper blacks, but an AMOLED display makes more sense on a device like the one by Amazfit because it is able to show watch faces with more info.

Software and features

The Amazfit Band 7 and the Xiaomi Band 7 share a lot of things in common, even though they come with different software. Thanks to a PPG sensor, they are able to monitor the heart rate for the whole day and even the SpO2 level 24/7. They also support sleep tracking in a very advanced way and menstrual cycle tracking. But the Amazfit Band 7 offers something more: all-day stress monitoring. This makes the difference for those who care about tracking their health in detail.

The Xiaomi wearable offers 120 sports modes in the Chinese version and 110 sports modes in the global variant, and it is able to automatically detect five sports modes. The Amazfit Band 7 tracks up to 120 kinds of physical activities and it is able to automatically detect four activities. Unfortunately, there is no NFC support, so you can not use these devices for contactless payments through your credit cards. Further, they do not come with a GPS module, but they can use the GPS from the connected phone to track physical activity. The Amazfit Band 7 and the Xiaomi Band 7 support Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity and can be paired with both Android phones and iPhones.

Battery

By looking at these two devices, you can easily understand which one offers the longest battery life, if you know something about batteries. The Xiaomi Band 7 is a smaller wearable, so it is kinda obvious that its battery life must be lower. It is able to last up to 14 days on a single charge, while you can get up to 18 days of battery life with the Amazfit Band 7. After all, the Huami wearable has a way bigger battery: its capacity is 232 mAh, while the Xiaomi has just 180 mAh inside.

Price

The prices of these two smart bands vary depending on the market, but they are not so different. The Xiaomi Band 7 sells for €50/$50 in the European market, while the Amazfit Band 7 is available in the U.S. for $50/€50. So which one is the best? I personally prefer the Amazfit because it has a wider display and a longer battery life, and it offers something more in terms of health and fitness trackings, such as all-day stress monitoring and more sports modes. But the Xiaomi Band 7 has its advantages to offer: it is more compact, more ergonomic, and more beautiful, and it has a very high pixel density improving the level of the definition provided by its pill-shaped display. Which one would you pick?
