vivo Y55s goes official, features biggest battery in a vivo phone yet

The upcoming vivo Y55s 5G has been plagued with rumors and leaks for a while. Whether it be leaked renders, or an entire spec leak through TENAA listing. Earlier today, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer officially announced the vivo Y55s on its website.

vivo Y55s

The listing on their websites confirmed the leaked specs and design of the phone but did not hint at a date on which the device will actually hit the Chinese market.

The Y55s 5G is the first device from vivo to carry the massive 6000mAh battery. Other than that, let’s look at what more features are packed in the device.

There back of the phone houses a 50MP f/1.8 primary lens and a 2MP f/2.4 second sensor for macro shots. The lack of a portrait camera and the ultrawide lens is somewhat compensated by the AI software.

Performance

Baidu launches a Smart Fitness Mirror with a 43-inch IPS screen, Octa-core AI SoC

Chinese search engine giant Baidu is to China what Google is to the rest of the world. Just like its search engine contemporary, Google, the Chinese company has got its hands in several product categories including robotaxis. The company has now launched a smart fitness mirror.Baidu Smart Fitness Mirror

The mirror is basically a smart large screen that is the size of a full-length mirror. In fact, when the gadget is turned off, it is no different from the regular full-length mirror. However, when it is turned on, a 43-inch IPS screen embedded under the mirror lights up. Also, an AI-powered virtual coach appears on the screen to guide the user through various fitness regimes in real-time, just like a fitness coach.

The mirror comes with LTE connectivity and users can follow the celebrity coaches to work out, interact with AI, and enjoy the joy of fitness in the process. It is also a social way to check in with friends.

In terms of specifications, the Baidu smart fitness mirror is equipped with a custom wide dynamic sensor, which improves the imaging ability by 40% in low-light environments, and supports a 144° super-wide-angle. The mirror can also record 2K 60fps images, and easily captures large movements during exercise.Baidu smart fitness mirror

The device has a built-in Octa-core AI processor with 3 Tops computing power, which can accurately capture actions and perform motion correction. The smart fitness mirror can also recognize the movements of the human body, thereby judging whether the movements are compliant, and gradually completing the body shaping cycle under the correct and scientific posture.

There is also a built-in professional Al boutique class onboard that is independently developed by Baidu. The class is continuously updated every week, making it possible for users to enjoy one-on-one Al private lessons with super A gold coaches right from the comfort of their homes.Baidu smart fitness mirror

The Baidu Smart Fitness Mirror comes in two versions; a Pioneer version priced at 4,199 yuan (~$662)and a Flagship version with a 4699 yuan (~$740) price tag.

Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 benchmark result surfaces for the first time

Chipmaker Qualcomm revamped the naming scheme of its chips with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 primed to be a very popular choice for 2022 flagship devices from several phone brands. It was officially unveiled by Qualcomm days back and new performance details about the chipset have now appeared. The new benchmarks reflect how the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 compares with its predecessor, the Snapdragon 888, and Apple’s A15 Bionic.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

During the Qualcomm event where the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was unveiled, it was showcased inside a reference platform device. The Geekbench 5 scores shared by PC Mag indicate the performance of the chip across several important metrics. Geekbench provides a cross-platform CPU performance benchmark with three results. There are slight variations between runs of each of the tests but these variations are not significant to affect the reliability of the results.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 scored 1,234 and 3,837, respectively for the Geekbench single-core and multi-core tests. Both Geekbench 5 scores for the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 were higher than those obtained for the Snapdragon 888 but still fall short of those of Apple’s A15 Bionic which powers the iPhone 13 series. From the scores, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset is still lower, performance-wise than Apple’s A14 Bionic, while it is almost at par with the Apple A13 Bionic which powers the iPhone 11 series.

Qualcomm had predicted a 20% performance improvement of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 over the Snapdragon 888, but this is not reflected in the new Geekbench 5 scores. Qualcomm will have to up its game to catch up with Apple whose chips are at least two generations ahead of the latest Qualcomm SoC. The scores are not fully definitive yet, since the device tested is not a commercial smartphone but a reference device. There could be some improvements in the current Geekbench 5 scores when an actual product powered by the chip is put through the Geekbench tests.

There are however improvements in GPU performance which is a great boon for gamers, as shown in the GFXBench 5 Aztec Ruins offscreen test, where the device outperformed the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Telegram rolls out Protected Content, Delete Messages by Date and many more features in the new update

Earlier today, Telegram announced a new update to its chat app via a blog post. The company stated that this new update brings tools to prevent others from saving content in groups and channels, the ability to delete messages from specific dates, new ways to manage your connected devices, an option to post anonymously in public groups on behalf of your channel and more. So let’s take a deeper look at these new features.

Telegram Update

Protected Content in Groups and Channels

With this update, Telegram helps creators protect the content they publish and ensure that it is available only for their intended audience.

Group and Channel owners who want to keep their content members-only can restrict message forwarding from their chat, preventing screenshots and limiting the ability to save media from posts.

Delete Messages by Date

Telegram users can delete any messages from a conversation at any time, and with this update, it’s been made even more convenient as you can now clear chat history from a specific day or date range in any one-on-one chat.

You can use this new feature by tapping on the date bar that pops up as you scroll through the chat, which will open the calendar. From there, you can choose which days you want to clear.

Manage Connected Devices

Telegram lets you use your account on all your devices simultaneously, and the devices menu helps you control where your account is logged in. The company has added a new button to quickly link a desktop device via QR code scanning and a setting to log out inactive devices after some time automatically

Additionally, the update enables even more control over your linked devices as you can now tap any device in the list to view more information and toggle whether it can accept calls or new Secret Chats.

Anonymous Posting in Public Groups

Public Groups and Channel Comments allow for discussions of any topic in massive communities with thousands of members. Now, you can represent your channel in these group discussions with the new ability to ‘appear as a channel’ when sending messages in these chats.

To access this functionality, you can tap the profile picture next to the message bar and choose one of your channels – the messages you send after that will appear with the name and photo of the channel instead of your personal account.

In addition to these features, many more have come to Telegram in this update, including login via phone call, new global chat themes for Android, and Live Text Recognition in multiple languages for iOS 13+ (via).

The inclusion of these new features makes Telegram even more appealing and leaves much to be desired from the dominant chat service, WhatsApp, which is sorely lacking in the variety of privacy and convenience features.

Apple to launch AirPods Pro 2 & three new Apple Watch in fall 2022, new iPhone SE drops in 2023: Kuo

A known Apple analyst has just revealed the launch timelines for some of the company’s highly awaited products. This includes the likes of the second generation AirPods Pro, its three new rumored Apple Watch models, and even the new iPhone SE.

Apple AirPods Pro

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (Via 9To5Mac), the Cupertino based giant will be releasing three of its new Apple Watch series smartwatches during fall next year. This would includes its Watch Series 8, Watch SE, and a rumored rugged sports version for athletes as well. Furthermore, the company will apparently also be unveiling the AirPods Pro 2, which will feature new built in health related sensors apart from improvements in the audio experience.

Notably, Kuo had also previously stated that the iPhone maker would also be releasing its rumored AR/VR headset as well next year. Although, the known analyst did not offer any details regarding any of the aforementioned products. Apart from these upcoming wearable products, Kuo also revealed details about a smartphone as well. He shared that the company’s new iPhone SE is expected to be launched sometime in early 2023.

Apple Watch SE

Previously, it was rumored that the next iPhone SE would arrive with just slight improvements over the previous generations and launch in 2022. However, Kuo believes that the next iteration will be arriving a whole year later and with major upgrades to its specifications as well. This most notably includes a larger display, paired with 4GB of RAM over its predecessors 3GB RAM. Since the company has previously launched the older iPhone SE models around the March and April time period, we can expect a similar launch timeline for this model as well.

Galaxy Buds+, Buds Pro add support for wear detection during calls

Samsung launched the Galaxy Buds+ alongside the Galaxy S20 series in early 2020. Even after the release of Galaxy Buds Pro with the Galaxy S21 series in 2021, the company continues to provide regular firmware updates to the older model with new features. The latest such software brings a useful addition to both these truly wireless earphones.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus Featured
Samsung Galaxy Buds+

The Galaxy Buds+ and the Galaxy Buds Pro have started receiving a new firmware update in multiple regions across the world. The new software update introduces a convenient feature, which should have been there since the beginning.

The above-mentioned Samsung TWS earbuds finally add support for wear detection during calls. With this new addition, the audio channel switches from the buds to the phone’s speaker when they are removed from the ears. At the same time, the audio output switches back to the buds once they are placed inside the ears.

We tried it on our Galaxy Buds+ and its works as intended. It should work fine on the Galaxy Buds Pro as well.

That said, like any other OTA firmware update, this one is also being seeded out in batches. As usual, Samsung kicked off the rollout in its home market South Korea. However, the update is now available in multiple markets like India.

OnePlus 9 series OxygenOS 12 update reportedly plagued by multiple bugs, missing some features

OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro have begun receiving the Android 12 update in the form of OxygenOS 12, effectively making OnePlus the fourth OEM after Google, Samsung, and OPPO to roll out the Android version. A number of new features have been added including redesigned icons, Work Life Balance 2.0, adjustable dark mode, revamped shelf, and UI tweaks across the board.

However, it’s just been a day following the phased rollout, and complaints about the new OS have already begun flowing in (via XDA Developers). Users say that the update is half-baked and littered with bugs and inconsistencies, with some even questioning if it’s really a stable update.

Some of these bugs include trouble with calls, bad animations, broken autofill, slower Wi-Fi speed, and so on. OnePlus and OnePlus 9 Pro are both reportedly affected by them.

The backlash against the update also has a lot to do with it being based completely on ColorOS 12 for the first time. The integration has caused multiple customization features to go missing like individual icon customization, status bar customization, an option to toggle the Google Feed, advanced reboot, and more. Call recording has also been done away with.

OnePlus 9 Pro All Colors Featured

Of course, complaints like these are unsurprising considering the OS has ditched the base it has been using for years and opted for another. The move has resulted in numerous changes throughout the interface and users will take time to get used to it. Sure, there are a few features lost, but several others have been added – a good example being adjustable dark mode.

As for bugs, it is quite disappointing to see them stick around in the final stable release despite several rounds of beta testing. But we are positive that OnePlus will be ironing them out soon enough.

Meizu mblu launches lifeme LP21C wired earphones with built-in DAC

Back in September, Meizu brought back its ‘mblu’ (Blue Charm) from the dead. The newly resurrected brand announced its own sub-brand called ‘lifeme’ for lifestyle products. This latest brand has now launched a pair of wired earphones called ‘lifeme LP21C’.

Meizu Mblu Lifeme LP21C Earphones Featured

Meizu Mblu Lifeme LP21C Specifications and Features

The lifeme LP21C wired headset comes in a single white color option. Instead of a 3.5mm connector, they use a USB Type-C. Hence, it can be used with almost any modern smartphone without a connector.

Unlike most wired earphones in the market, these feature a built-in DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter). They come with a Conexant CX21988 chip to be exact.

The earbuds sport a semi-in-ear design and house 14.2mm drivers inside them. They also have a built-in microphone.

The earphones also include an inline remote control consisting of three buttons. Two of these are volume keys, while the remaining one is functional.

Last but not least, Meizu mblu advertises this product to offer a very low-latency experience. This is obvious as it uses a wire instead of Bluetooth wireless connection.

Meizu Mblu Lifeme LP21C Price and Availability

The lifeme LP21C wired headset from Meizu’s mblu is priced at ¥79 ($12) in China. They are already up for sale in the country.

Upcoming vivo S12 phones codenamed ‘Superman’ may usher in new era for S series

Now that Chinese New Year is approaching, the new vivo S12 is almost upon us. The device has been codenamed “Superman” and is expected to be released this month.

The vivo S series always kept its focus on selfie camera performance and sported slim and stylish appearances. However, the more hardcore Superman codename seemingly signals the ushering in of a different strategy for the S series. Superman is, after all, a symbol of power, speed, versatility, and other characteristics.

Vivo S12 Pro render
Vivo S12 Pro’s alleged render

This probably does not mean that vivo will be doing away with all of the selfie tech it has developed over the years. The vivo S series should continue to include features such as enhanced beauty, RAW domain noise reduction, and selfie softlight. But these will be topped by improvements to raw performance and the gaming experience.

Digital Chat station recently stated that the vivo S12 and S12 Pro are currently testing the new OriginOS Ocean system and support 44W fast charging. These two, combined with the iQOO Neo5se, iQOO Neo5s, etc., are equipped with Snapdragon 778G + Dimensity 1200 + Snapdragon 888 chipsets.

Previous leaks had revealed that the vivo S12 Pro uses an FHD+ OLED high refresh rate curved display, 50MP dual camera setup on the front, 108MP triple camera setup on the rear, and Dimensity 1200 processor. It will come pre-installed with OriginOS Ocean and will be priced at $450-500.

Talking about its anti-entanglement feature, the new robotic vacuum cleaner that can even untangle hair caught in the cleaning brush of the device. For those unaware, MIJIA’s vacuum cleaners usually are completely automatic and do not require human interaction apart from when users have to clear out the dust box.

However, extended periods of use can cause its cleaning effectiveness to drop as items like hair and large clumped up dust particles get caught in the sweeping brush. But the newly launched model is capable of even clearing up these debris by itself. Furthermore, it features a 450ml dust box and 250ml water tank. The devices is even equipped with a WiFi and BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) dual mode wireless module.

In other words, users can even connect this device to the MIJIA app on users’ smartphones by simply bringing your handset close to the robot vacuum cleaner. Samsung Mobile no longer a seperate entity, gets merged with consumer electronics division

Samsung has decided to merge its mobile business with its consumer electronics division as most of its profits now come from the company’s semiconductor division. The number of CEOs has consequently been reduced from three to two.

The move makes sense considering the phone and tablet business now only brings about 21% of Samsung’s total profits, down from the 70% figure from 2010. This comes despite Samsung being the world’s largest phone manufacturer by volume, that is, if we split BBK Electronics into its OPPO, vivo, and OnePlus subsidiaries (via PhoneArena).

On the other hand, the chips and storage division made Samsung $13.4 billion in the last quarter alone, boosted by pandemic-induced demand.

Jong-Hee (JH) Han will now also lead the newly merged SET Division along with leading the company’s Visual Display (TV) Business, whereas Kyehyun Kyung is now the new CEO of the Device Solutions (components) division.

JH Han is a notable expert in TV research and development who helped the company achieve the number one spot in worldwide TV sales for the 15th year in a row. He is expected to improve synergies across the SET Division’s many businesses and assist in the development of new businesses and technology.

Kyungmook Lee, professor of business management at Seoul National University, had the following to say about the decision:

“Today’s announcement shows the company keeps its performance-driven culture. It also shows Jay Y. Lee’s willingness to more actively engage in management…Apple uses one OS for phones, PCs, and TVs and its products show seamless integration. Samsung’s IT products, however, lack such seamless integration between phones and gadgets. The merger between its consumer and mobile divisions, which have until now operated independently, may help fix this issue.”

[Exclusive] realme GT 2 Pro leaked live image shows off an under-display selfie camera

The realme GT 2 Pro is one of the most hyped devices of late mainly due to its unique design. There’s a horizontal camera array at the rear, reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy S10 series and very similar to the Pixel 6. While official renders of the flagship-level phone have only given us a glimpse of its rear till now, we have managed to get our hands on a live image of the phone’s front for the very first time.

Realme GT 2 Pro LEAK - Gizmochina Exclusive 01

As you can see in the image above, the realme GT 2 Pro comes with extremely narrow bezels that are equal across the sides and the top. The chin isn’t visible but is likely to be quite slim too, although we expect it to be a tiny bit wider than the other bezels as usual.

However, it’s not the bezels that are the main highlight of the phone. If you haven’t already noticed, the alleged image of the realme GT 2 Pro shows that the phone does not have a front camera at all – or at least that’s what it looks like. Our source says that the phone will actually come in two editions, one of which will sport an under-display camera, making it the very first offering from realme to feature the tech.

And the under-display camera looks to be a rather good one too, as no matter how hard you squint, it simply isn’t visible in the image at all. We thus have no way to tell what side the camera is aligned to – a testament towards the phone very well featuring the finest UD camera screen of 2022. Still, we expect to see more of the tech next year as it gets refined.

Apart from this, the source revealed that the realme GT 2 Pro will be featuring a 2K display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. The Display & brightness settings section further shows that the device’s display will also be having HDR support. This, combined with ‘Video motion enhancement’ or MEMC, should provide an ultimate binge-watching experience to the phone’s beholders.

Do note here that the phone is likely running a test version of realme UI, so the final version can be subject to some changes.

Previous leaks showed that the realme GT 2 Pro’s display is sized 6.51-inches and also features an in-screen fingerprint scanner under it. The phone may become one of the very first launches with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor when it goes live, which will likely be paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

The front camera is expected to be a high-res one with a resolution of 32-megapixels. At the rear, there may be a triple camera array with a 50MP Sony IMX766 primary shooter. The battery is expected to be sized 5000mAh with 125W fast charging support.

An official announcement for the phone is expected tomorrow (December 9).

Huawei may launch Mate 40E Pro with Kirin 990 5G as Kirin 9000 SoC stock runs dry

Huawei is apparently gearing up to launch another new device within its flagship Mate 40 lineup from last year. A new report has suggested that the new Mate 40 series model will feature 5G networking and could be the sixth entry in the family.

Huawei

The Chinese tech giant had recently obtained a network access license from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. This license was for a new smartphone with a model number of “NOH-AN50,” which hints that it belongs to the Mate 40 flagship family. It was initially assumed to be a new Mate 40 Pro model that could’ve been branded as a Collector’s Edition and feature the Kirin 9000 5G chipset. But now, tipster @魔法科技君 believes that the upcoming handset in question is the Mate 40E Pro that will be powered by a Kirin 990 5G SoC.

For those unaware, the company had previously launched the Mate 40E in a 4G and 5G variant. Now, it is apparently gearing up to launch a new Pro variant as well that supports 5G networking. While the Mate 40E had featured a Kirin 990E processor, the Pro variant will supposedly sport the Kirin 990 5G. However, it seems odd that the brand plans to release a new smartphone that features a dated flagship processor that was announced back in 2019.

In other words, Huawei might have reserves of its Kirin 9000 series running low or they could possibly even be completely dry. This means that any future smartphones from the brand might likely be unable to feature its latest and greatest chipset. Previous estimates had indicated that the company had managed to acquire just 10 million units of Kirin 9000 chips before US sanctions cut off the company from its primary chip supplier TSMC. Although, this is still just an unconfirmed report, so take it with a pinch of salt for now.
