Redmi Note 8 finally gets Android 11 in India, but daily beta builds have been done away with

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is one of those super popular devices that sold in the millions. It was launched back in August 2019 running Android Pie layered with MIUI 10 atop. It has since been updated to Android 10 and has been awaiting Android 11. To recall, the phone first got a taste of Android 11 back in early 2021 when it rolled out in China.

However, no Android 11 rolled out in regions like India and Redmi Note 8 users therein have been waiting on the same for over 9 months now. That has changed now though with the release of build 12.0.1.0.RCOINXM that carries a size of 2.2GB. The update has only rolled out to those part of the Mi Pilot Testers program currently, meaning regular users may still have to wait for a few more days.

redmi note 8 android 11 update india

In terms of features, there’s barely anything new considering that the ROM is still based on MIUI 12. Yes, you heard that right – MIUI 13 is set to be launched by the end of this year but the Redmi Note 8 is yet to get a taste of MIUI 12.5. The device is still eligible for MIUI 13 though, so perhaps, Xiaomi plans to upgrade the device directly to the same.

Tipster Abhishek Yadav claims that the Android 11 update for the device is laggy, but it does add stuff like the October security patch, support for RAM extension, navigation pill, and horizontal recents arrangement.

But now that Android 11 is finally here, it’s time for some bad news. Xiaomi typically updates its budget devices with at least three MIUI versions and two Android versions, so the Redmi Note 8 is nearing its end of life. Daily Chinese beta builds have already stopped for it along with the Xiaomi Mi 9, Mi 9 SE, Mi 9 Lite (Mi CC9), Mi 9 Pro 5G, Redmi K20 (Mi 9T), Redmi K20 Pro (Mi 9T Pro), and Redmi Note 8 Pro (via Xiaomiui). This means that MIUI 13 will be the last major update for these devices.

Xiaomi was overtaken by Apple in Q3 2021 due to strong iPhone 13 demand: Exec

Recently, Xiaomi had officially shared its quarterly performance report for the third quarter of this year. In this report, the company revealed its revenue and global smartphone shipments, although, it seems that the brand was overtaken by Apple in Q3 2021.

Xiaomi

According to a Canalys report, Xiaomi had a market share of 13.5 percent in the global smartphone market, with its shipments hitting 43.9 million units. This meant that the company held the third spot, which was down from 16.7 percent market share in the previous quarter. On the other hand, Apple had secured the second spot, overtaking the Chinese tech giant, with around a 15 percent market share in the third quarter.

As per Xiaomi’s President, Wang Xiang, the company’s third quarter performance had saw a slight decline. However, the reason that Apple overtook it was due to the robust demand for the iPhone 13 series. Apart from just the 2021 iPhone lineup, the senior official stated that the shortage of chips in this quarter also affected the shipments of the company’s smartphones. The executive believes that the shortage might have impacted shipments worth significant 10 to 20 million handset units.

Apple iPhone 13

Despite the overall decline, Wang Xiang added that the brand’s premium grade smartphone market share saw a rise. In the first three quarters of 2021, the company shipped a total of 18 million high end phones, which accounts for 12.8 percent of its total shipments. This is up from 8 percent during the same period from last year. The President further added that Xiaomi will continue to follow its high end segment strategy while also putting efforts in other segments as well.

Redmi GM teases a Dimensity 7000 smartphone

MediaTek is expected to announce a lower variant of its newly unveiled Dimensity 9000 SoC. This upcoming chipset is said to go official as Dimensity 7000. Ahead of that, the General Manager of the Redmi brand teases this silicon.

Redmi Note 10 Pro CN VER Review 11
Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G

A couple of days back, Redmi GM Lu Weibing teased the yet-to-be-announced Dimensity 7000 chip on Weibo by questioning what kind of processor it is. This clearly suggests that there will be Redmi smartphones powered by this SoC as the executive is known for vague teasers.

Although the Xiaomi group exec doesn’t hint at the device, we can speculate it to be the recently spotted Xiaomi Rubens (L11A), which is expected to house the unreleased MediaTek silicon. Currently, there’s only a Chinese variant of this phone with model number 22041211AC.

As of now, we only know that the handset will feature a triple camera array on the rear. This setup will include a 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW3 primary sensor.

As far as the marketing name is concerned, it is rumored to go official as Redmi K50 Gaming Standard Edition. While the Xiaomi Matisse (L10) with a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 is said to release as Redmi K50 Gaming Pro.

We look forward to learning more about Xiaomi Rubens before its launch via certifications, leaks, and teasers in the coming days.

Xiaomi might launch an Apple Self Service Repair-like program in India

With the European Union strongly pushing the right to repair movement, Apple had recently announced its Self Service Repair program in the US. Now, it seems that other brands might be following suit with a similar service as Xiaomi could be launching a new repair program for the Indian market.

For those unaware, Apple had launched a new program that will allow users to repair some of their products by themselves, using tools and parts officially provided by the Cupertino based brand. And earlier this week, Xiaomi India had also announced a service program through their official Twitter handle. In the social media post, the Chinese tech giant simply shared “Services Simplified,” with a caption stating that “We Care. For us, it’s always been about You It’s been about Your experience with us. We’ve always strived to put You first. And now, we’re taking things a notch higher, just for You. We Care.”

While this information reveals practically nothing about the service itself, the company might be planning on offering a simplified program that might make repairs and related services simpler. Furthermore, this could even include the “self service” aspect similar to Apple’s recent program. Keep in mind that this is just an educated guess based on the timing of both announcements so take it with a pinch of salt for now.

Xiaomi

Back in August, we had also reported on the brand filing for a Xiaomi Mi Care repair service trademark. Previously, this particular program had only been available in its home market of China. Thus, the trademark implied that the service could be launching in overseas market as well. India is a key region for the Chinese brand, so it won’t be a surprise if the program in question makes its appearance in the country. So stay tuned for more updates regarding this matter.

ZTE Axon 30 Ultra Aerospace Edition unveiled: world’s first phone with 18GB RAM + 1TB storage

ZTE today lifted the curtains on the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra Aerospace Edition phone through a launch event that also unveiled various other products such as the ZTE Voyage 20 Pro, multiple routers, and the ZTE LiveBuds Pro earbuds. But the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra Aerospace Edition obviously continues to be the star of the show because of the massive amount of RAM it packs – 18 gigabytes!

ZTE Axon 30 Ultra aerospace edition

Not only that, but the phone also offers a mammoth 1TB of storage, making it the industry’s first to come with an 18GB RAM + 1TB storage config. The phone carries a space theme all around – from its black-ish coloring to the planet-themed packaging. ZTE says that it’s designed to be a tribute to the spirit of space exploration and Chinese space heroes.

The box packs multiple other surprises too. The protective film within shows a space station orbiting the earth in a minimalist style. There’s even a custom case that appears to be made of carbon fiber. Last but not least, you also get ZTE LiveBuds Pro Bluetooth earbuds inside that normally cost 349 Yuan or around $55.

ZTE Axon 30 Ultra aerospace edition unbox

Apart from all of the aforementioned specials, the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra Aerospace Edition is identical to its vanilla version. It is equipped with the Snapdragon 888 processor and has an FHD+ 6.67-inch AMOLED curved screen with support for HDR 10+ and 144Hz refresh rate. But perhaps the most impressive bit is its rear camera module that packs triple 64MP cameras – another industry first. It doesn’t just end there though as there’s also a fourth 8MP periscope telephoto sensor. Upfront, you get a 16MP sensor for selfies. The phone’s battery is sized at 4600mAh with support for 66W fast charging.

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra Aerospace Edition is priced at 6,998 Yuan (~$1,095), but it’s unlikely that it will be making it to the global market. You can still grab the regular ZTE Axon 30 Ultra (8+128) for $749 though and there’s even an additional $200 discount deal as part of Black Friday.

ZTE launches the Voyage 20 Pro in China, with 5,100mAh battery, 66W fast charging & Dimensity 720

ZTE has just launched the Voyage 20 Pro 5G smartphone. The company had teased the device just yesterday, and has now officially announced the smartphone in its home market of China.

ZTE

The Chinese smartphone maker had just launched the Axon 30 Ultra Aerospace Edition earlier today (25th November 2021) and alongside the high end device, it even launched the Voyage 20 Pro 5G as well. The display supports 1.07 billion colors and 10 bit colors on its FHD+ panel. This display even offers HDR10 video playback support along with DCI P3 color gamut.

The Voyage 20 Pro is equipped with the Super Antenna 3.0, which the company claims to offer a more stable phone reception along with faster download speeds, which is made possible through the 4G+5G+WiFi three channel network acceleration when the “speed mode” is turned on. Under the hood, a large 5,100mAh battery pack powers the device, which also supports 66W fast charging as well. On the rear, the ZTE Voyage 20 Pro features a 64 megapixel primary camera, paired with a 120 degree ultra wide angle lens, and a macro sensor as well.

ZTE

Meanwhile, the front houses a 16 megapixel selfie shooter. The device houses a MediaTek Dimensity 720 processor and arrives in a single storage variant, with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Furthermore, its color options include a dark green gradient color and dual toned blue and pinkish gradient option. It will be available for purchase in China with a price tag of 2,198 Yuan (roughly 345 US Dollars).

Google to use your Chromebook’s camera to help prevent shoulder surfing

Google has been working on an interesting and anticipated feature for its Chromebook for a while now. The feature in question is aimed to boost the privacy in Chromebooks and to ensure users have a shoulder surfing free experience.

Google

According to an AndroidPolice report, it is called the Human Presence Sensor (HPS) and it aims to offer users alert to notify them that someone could be taking a peek at their notebook. This feature has been listed in the Chromium Gerrit for a while now, so the company has been working on this feature some time. Back in September, the HPS could work with the face unlock feature to help bolster the Chromebook’s security.

And now, it seems that the feature will also arrive with snooping alerts as well. Once the HPS is activated on Chromebooks, the system will notify users when someone is looking over their shoulder, which is also known as shoulder surfing. The search engine giant seeks to use the built in webcam on your notebooks to track the number of people in the frame and react according to the settings that the user has set.

Google

Once a person looks over your shoulder, the Chrome OS offers a few options. First, users can simply be alerted to their surroundings by having a small eye icon appear in the status area of the display. This feature can even turn off notifications or automatically dim the display to prevent the person from peeking into the contents on the screen. In other words, it could be especially useful if they are working with sensitive information at a public space. Unfortunately, the feature is still a while away, and are expected to launch sometime next year.

MIUI 13 rumored to launch on December 16, and it won’t be alone

MIUI 13 development is currently under full swing and a number of recent high-end models have already received internal builds in the stable beta channel. While other OEMs like Samsung, OPPO, and OnePlus have already unveiled their software skins for Android 12, Xiaomi has been rather late to the party, with still no sign of any major upgrade almost two months after Android 12 hit stable. But that will apparently be changing soon.

Xiaomiui has reported that the next iteration of Xiaomi’s heavily customized Android skin – MIUI 13 – might be announced on December 16 in China, or in just 20 days from now. The event is reportedly going to be quite a major one and is also expected to announce the next flagship Xiaomi 12 phone. But of course, a 4-hour long event is still a bit too long for just two products, and we may therefore see multiple other launches.

miui 13 eligible devices
Present state of MIUI 13 (Image: Xiaomiui)

Coming to MIUI 13 itself, the Android skin has been touted to be a major upgrade over MIUI 12.5, bringing along a range of improvements and UI changes. At least 9 devices are currently known to have already received internal test builds, namely the entirety of the Mi 11 series, Mi 11 Lite 5G, Mi 10S, MIX 4, and the Redmi K40/K40 Pro/K40 Pro+. These devices will likely be receiving Android 12-based MIUI 13 stable but several others will even receive Android 11-based MIUI 13.

As for features, there’s barely anything known at the moment – Xiaomi has been rather tight-lipped about it all. Still, we have had a few hints in the recent past including re-designed File Manager and Themes apps. MIUI 13 is also expected to bring along new wallpapers and icons.

Xiaomi TWS 3 Pro tipped to soon launch in India; expected be priced under ₹10,000 ($134)

Xiaomi hasn’t launched true wireless earbuds under its Mi brand in the Indian market this year, instead, the China-based company has been focusing on the Redmi branded TWS earphones in the country.

Now, a new report claims that the company could soon launch Xiaomi TWS 3 Pro in the Indian market. However, the exact launch date is not yet known but they are expected to go official in December or January.

Xiaomi-TWS-3-Pro

The Xiaomi TWS 3 Pro earphones were first launched in China in the month of September, along with the company’s Xiaomi CIVI smartphone and Xiaomi Watch Color 2 smartwatch.

The earphones were launched as the world’s first TWS earbuds to feature LHDC 4.0 codec claimed to boost audio quality to “HiFi-level”. Xiaomi has also opted for Adaptive ANC for the first time. There is a 3-stage noise reduction, an ambient mode, and a human voice-enhancing mode involved in the entire Adaptive ANC process.

Xiaomi has claimed that the TWS 3 Pro can clip off noises up to 40dB. There’s also support for spatial (or 360-degree) audio and comes with Type-C charging. The company claims it to last up to 6 hours alone with ANC off.

In China, the TWS earphones come in three color options — Black, White, and Deep Forest Green. They are priced at 699 yuan which roughly converts to $109 and we expect them to be priced under ₹10,00 in India.

Tesla Model Y High-Performance is now getting delivered in China

Tesla, one of the most popular electric car manufacturers globally, has now started delivering the first batch of Model Y High-Performance models in China. This was confirmed by the company itself on its official Weibo account.

The China-made Model Y started delivering in the country from January but out of the two models — Long Ranger and High-Performance, it appears that only the Long Range model was being delivered so far.

Tesla

The Tesla Model Y High-Performance model has a starting price of 389,900 yuan and has a battery life of 566 kilometers under the NEDC standard. When compared, the price is 111,900 yuan more than the entry-level Model Y.

Thanks to the dual-motor all-wheel drive, the car only takes 3.7 seconds to accelerate from zero kilometers to 100 kilometers and has a maximum speed of 250 kilometers per hour.

Additionally, the Tesla Model Y High-Performance model with 10 milliseconds four-wheel-drive response speed is equipped with a racing kit, including 21-inch cyclone turbine wheels and carbon fiber spoilers, advanced braking devices, exclusive aluminum alloy pedals, and lower suspension.

Recently, Tesla’s Giga Shanghai reached a production capacity of 1,000 Model Y vehicles per day. The Model Y production rate at Giga Shanghai is higher than that of the Model 3, which is produced at 800 vehicles per day.

Tesla has already sold out of the entry-level Model Y available capacity in China earlier this month, and the company has revealed that new orders won’t be delivered until early 2022.

Xiaomi removes Mi Bunny from MIUI fastboot screen

Xiaomi started as a software company with MIUI as its sole product. Lately, the firm’s Android skin is being criticized worldwide for a wide variety of issues. Hence, the tech giant has been trying to resolve the matter by delaying the MIUI 13 release. We have been learning more about the upcoming features of the next version of MIUI in the last few days. According to the latest information, Xiaomi’s Android devices may lose an iconic uniqueness.

Ever since Xiaomi started selling smartphones, it has been popular among the modding community. In fact, its devices are most favored by developers. That’s because Xiaomi is known for allowing bootloader unlock and releasing proper kernel sources, unlike most Chinese OEMs. Secondly, the company’s devices offer a better price to performance ratio and are also affordable when compared to products from other brands.

If you are one of those custom ROM users of Xiaomi, you should be familiar with the fastboot screen on your devices. For years, this screen has had a picture of a rabbit fixing an Android with a blue-colored ‘FASTBOOT’ text below it. No other OEM has this sort of uniqueness. Unfortunately, the company has removed it in the latest MIUI Weekly Beta release.

According to a report by ITHome, Xiaomi has now replaced the image with a simple yellow-colored ‘FASTBOOT’ text for the fastboot screen in MIUI Beta 21.11.16 release. It is a known fact that the new changes in MIUI are first introduced in the weekly beta channel. However, not all of them make their way to the stable channel. If Xiaomi really intends to change the fastboot screen, it will be most likely be introduced with MIUI 13 update.

Xiaomi has been shedding its past as time moves on. The rabbit in the fastboot screen is none other than the company’s official mascot. It is known as Mitu in China, while internationally it’s called Mi Bunny.

In the past few years, Xiaomi has removed Mi Bunny (Mitu) from almost everywhere in international markets. It can be currently only seen in error pages on Mi.com, in addition to the fastboot screen, which is also going away.

The Redmi Note 11 5G, which was announced in China back in October, was made official in global markets with the POCO M4 Pro 5G moniker. The models that have appeared in the IMEI database suggests that the 2201116PI and 2201116PG Xiaomi phones could be a rebranded version of China’s Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G.

The 2201116PI model may launch as the POCO X4 and it could be heading to India soon. The 2201116PG could be arriving as the POCO X4 NFC in the global markets.

BYD gets another major electric bus order from Nobina in Finland

BYD, which is one of the world’s leading e-bus manufacturers, has announced that it has received yet another large electric bus order from Finland. Nobina, the local transport operator of Finland has ordered 70 more e-buses.

Out of the 70 new electric buses, 42 of them are 13 meters long while 28 of them are 15 meters long. The company has said that these new buses are to be delivered in the summer of 2022 and will mainly operate on city routes in the greater Helsinki area.

The 13-meter models are relatively close to the 12-meter buses that are common in Europe. The 15-meter buses with double axles at the rear are mainly used in Scandinavia for intercity transport.

Both these variants ordered by Nobina are equipped with LFP batteries from BYD. In the 13-meter bus, one charge can cover a distance of around 400 kilometers while the 15-meter bus is rated to cover 450 kilometers on a single charge.

Commenting on this, Petri Auno, CEO of Nobina Finland, said: “We continue to select BYD eBuses based on their excellent track record for reliability, operational efficiency, performance, safety and of course, for the comfort they provide to our passengers. BYD eBuses now account for 25% of our Nobina Finland fleet and we look forward to enhancing this in the future.”

As noted, this is another order from Finland for BYD as the country had previously ordered 76 electric buses for use in Helsinki and Turku, which were delivered by the company earlier this year in August. With this new order, the total number of electric buses to be delivered by BYD in Finland stands at 119.
