Qualcomm aims to take on Apple M-series chips with its next-gen PC chips

During the 2021 Investor Day event, Qualcomm unveiled its next-generation technology that paves a path for the company to compete against Apple Silicon’s new M-series chips used for the new Mac devices.

Qualcomm has unveiled its new CPU hardware that is designed by Nuvia, a chip startup founded by three former Apple engineers. For those who are unaware, Qualcomm had acquired Nuvia earlier this year for $1.4 billion.

Qualcomm Next-Gen CPUs for PCs

The company is looking to advance its PC processors with the next-generation Arm-based SoC which it says is “designed to set the performance benchmark for Windows PCs” that would be able to go head to head with Apple’s M-series processors.

The chipset company is also aiming to be a leader for “sustained performance and battery life.” Further, Qualcomm has also promised that it would be scaling up its Adreno GPUs for offering desktop-class gaming capabilities for its future PC products.

The new Qualcomm chips for PCs, designed by Nuvia, are slated to ship in consumer products sometime in 2023. This is quite a long time, giving Apple about two more years to unveil or showcase its future Apple Silicon chips.

It will be interesting to see Qualcomm’s new take for the PC chips as its previous attempts have been lackluster so far. So far, it has launched Snapdragon 8cx processors and partnered with Microsoft for the SQ1 and SQ2 chips on the Surface X.

Qualcomm aiming to compete with Apple isn’t surprising as the Cupertino-based giant stunned everyone when it announced its plan of transitioning Mac devices from Intel to its own Apple Silicon platform which so far has three chips — M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max. These processors from the company, based on the ARM architecture, offer a revolutionary experience of power and battery life.

PUBG New State crosses 10 million downloads on Google Play Store within a week of launch

A few days ago, on 11th November, PUBG: New State was launched for Android and iOS devices as a new battle royale game set in the future. The game has been popular as it has now crossed 10 million downloads on the Google Play Store.

This isn’t surprising as the game had over 55 million pre-registrations prior to its release. It has also claimed the #1 spot in over 165 countries, including South Korea, the United States, Germany, India, and Saudi Arabia, among others.

PUBG: New State

This new PUBG: New State game has been launched globally in around 200 countries. The game’s publisher Krafton has not yet announced the number of downloads taken place on the Apple App Store for iPhones and iPads.

The game had faced some post-launch issues including server crashes and smartphone bricking. However, the developers seem to have addressed and fixed those issues with a couple of updates. Several users had reported on the day of the game’s launch about the unresponsive loading screens, inability to join a match, and more.

Krafton has put in several new features into the game to make it more appealing and exciting for battle royale players. For starters, the storyline is based in the year 2051 and thus the players have access to futuristic weapons and vehicles.

Earlier this year, the company had launched Battlegrounds Mobile India which is available exclusively for Indian users. The game recently crossed 50 million downloads in the country before it was released on iOS.

If we compare this with the Indian pricing, then we can say that the tablet is slightly expensive in the European markets. The Realme Pad comes at a cheaper price of ₹13,999(~$188) in India. But, it is worth noting that it is the base 3GB RAM + 32GB variant, whereas, the European model is 4GB RAM + 64GB variant. That said, the 4GB RAM + 64GB (Wi-Fi + LTE variant) costs ₹17,999(~$242) which is again slightly affordable than the original €260(~$294) pricing for which the Wi-Fi-only model is listed in Europe.

The Realme Pad comes in a metal body design with a 10.4-inch LCD display. The screen has a 2000 x 1200 pixels resolution and 360 nits of brightness. It comes with features like Reading Mode, Night Mode, Dark Mode, and Sunlight Mode. It features an 8MP front camera and an 8MP rear camera.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Nexport will be selling the BYD Yuan Plus in Australia from October this year. However, the rollout has been delayed “by a couple of months” because of production and shipping setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A report reveals chipsets powering Samsung phones, tablets in 2022

The year 2021 is about to end and Samsung is all set to introduce new smartphones and tablets for 2022. We have been hearing more about these upcoming devices for the past few days. A new report has now even revealed the chipsets powering these forthcoming products.

Samsung Galaxy Logo Featured

According to a report by The Elec, Samsung is planning to launch a total of 64 smartphones and tablets. Out of these, 31 models will use Qualcomm chips, new Exynos SoCs co-developed by Samsung and AMD will power 20 models, MediaTek chipsets will be used in 14 models, and there will be 3 models with UNISOC chipsets.

Samsung Smartphone & Tablet Lineup Chipset 2022

  • Total – 64 Models
  • Qualcomm – 31
  • Exynos – 20
  • MediaTek – 14
  • UNISOC – 3

Talking about specific devices, the Galaxy S22 series will use both Exynos (South Korea, Europe) and Qualcomm (US) chips. There are also reports stating that India and Africa will be getting Qualcomm variants instead of Exynos.

Further, the Galaxy S22 FE is said to exclusively use Exynos silicon and it will enter mass production in Q3 2022. On the other hand, the Galaxy S21 FE will be powered by both Qualcomm and Exynos SoCs.

The Galaxy Z Fold4 and the Galaxy Flip4 will solely come with a Qualcomm chip, while Galaxy Tab S8, Galaxy Tab S8+, and Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra will be driven exclusively by an Exynos chipset.

Interestingly, the Galaxy A53 will switch to Exynos from Qualcomm. Similarly, Galaxy A33 will transition from MediaTek to Exynos. Finally, the Galaxy A73 will be powered by a Qualcomm silicon, Snapdragon 778G to be precise.

Having said that, since the global semiconductor shortage is still prevailing, the above-mentioned details are subject to change.

The rebadged HUAWEI nova 8 Pro is not discontinued, will be restocked next month

Earlier this month, a smartphone called TD Tech N8 Pro made its debut in China. The device went out of stock within days of its release and was rumored to be discontinued. Now, it is said that this handset will hit the shelves once again at the end of the year.

TD Tech N8 Pro is a rebranded HUAWEI nova 8 Pro with 5G connectivity. In fact, TD Tech Co., Ltd. itself has confirmed to a media house that the components for this phone are purchased from Huawei, reports ITHome.

At the same time, the company has also revealed that this smartphone is not discontinued. Instead, it is now mainly aimed at corporate users and will be restocked next month. Interested customers will get a chance to purchase it once again from the end of December 2021. The handset will be sold on JD.

A Bloomberg report recently exposed that Huawei is looking to license its smartphone designs to Chinese partners. TD Tech Co., Ltd. is listed as one of these partners. This suggests TD Tech N8 Pro is probably just a trial and we might see more such rebadged Huawei phones in the future.

According to ITHome, TD Tech is a telecom equipment manufacturer, which originated as a joint venture between Nokia and Simens. It is presently a wholly-owned subsidiary of TD Tech Holding Limited.

Huawei and Nokia Hong Kong are investors of this parent holding company. Huawei’s rotating chairman Xu Zhijun is the director of this firm.

Apple iPhone 13 series expected to sell over 80 million units this quarter

Apple has seen some impressive numbers related to the sales of the iPhone 13 series and now the company is reportedly set to increase its lead with the bumper sales in the current quarter as well, i.e. from October to December this year.

According to a new report from Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives (via AppleInsider), the Cupertino-based technology giant is estimated to sell more than 80 million iPhones in the current holiday quarter, which happens to be Apple’s first fiscal quarter for 2022.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max Display

In his note, Ives writes: “Despite the chip shortage and Rubik’s Cube logistics that Apple (and every other technology, auto, and retail vendor) is dealing with we are seeing tremendous demand trends both in the US and China for iPhone 13 which is a positive sign that Apple could exceed selling 80 million iPhone units in the quarter with stronger Pro versions driving higher ASPs.”

It is further noted that between Black Friday and Christmas, the company could sell 40 million units of iPhones. Not just that, the company is also expected to sell up to 100 million Apple AirPods in this quarter.

This is in line with what J. P. Morgan had predicted based on the delivery times for the iPhone 13 series. The investment firm noted that with the delivery timeframe growing longer for the 2021 models of the iPhones, demand is surpassing supply by around 15%.

Apple’s iPhone production, like many other products, has been suffering from the global chip shortage and the estimated shipping time for the iPhone 13 was spanning weeks and has cost the company $6 billion. As per the report, Apple suppliers have managed to ease the shortage of certain components and with a production boom, it will be able to address the issues of availability and demand.

Design

The design of the Realme GT Neo2 is slightly more attractive because it comes in original color variants such as the gradient NEO Blue and NEO Green with a black stripe reminding of a sports car. Further, it is a more compact phone and its camera module is less invasive. On the other hand, you can get a better build quality with the Xiaomi 11T: this handset has the IP53 certification making it dust resistant and splash resistant, and it also provides the Gorilla Glass Victus protection for the display. Its design includes a glass back and an aluminum frame.

Display

If we talk about displays, then Xiaomi 11T is one step forward on the paper. Its AMOLED panel is able to show up to one billion colors providing the HDR10+ certification, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and a diagonal of 6.67 inches. The AMOLED panel found on the Realme GT Neo2 shows just 16 million colors and it is smaller with a diagonal of 6.62 inches, but unlike the Xiaomi 11T, it packs an in-display fingerprint reader (on the 11T, it is mounted at the side, on the power key). Both the phones feature stereo speakers providing great audio quality.

Specs & Software

If you are searching for the most powerful hardware, then you should choose the Realme GT Neo2. First of all, it has the most powerful chipset: the Snapdragon 870 running at 3.2 GHz and composed of Kryo CPUs and the Adreno 660 GPU. Further, it offers a higher quantity of RAM: up to 12 GB, while you get a max of 8 GB with the Xiaomi 11T. The Xiaomi flagship killer is equipped with a Dimensity 1200 chipset by Mediatek which is built with a better production process, but its performance is inferior. The phones run Android 11 with Realme UI and MIUI to customize it, respectively. They support 5G connectivity and WiFi 6; no expandable storage, but there is a dual SIM slot.

Camera

Realme GT Neo2 and Xiaomi 11T can be considered midrange camera phones, but the Xiaomi 11T is able to provide a better photo quality thanks to the main camera with a resolution of 108 MP. The Realme GT Neo2 has a 64 MP main camera which is definitely inferior and even an inferior macro camera (2 MP vs 5 MP). Despite the main camera of the GT Neo2 being less impressive, it is the only one that can record 4K videos at 60 fps.

Battery

The battery capacity of Realme GT Neo2 and Xiaomi 11T is exactly the same: 5000 mAh. But this does not mean they will guarantee the same battery life because they are equipped with different components. Fast charging should reach similar speeds as the powers are 65W and 67W, respectively.

Price

Realme GT Neo2 has a starting price of €449/$508 but it is available for just €369/$417 for the Black Friday period, while the street price of the Xiaomi 11T is currently €499/$565. Given the price difference, the Realme GT Neo2 offers a higher value for money besides a superior chipset, but the Xiaomi 11T is a slightly better phone overall.

Talking about its specifications, the Moto Watch 100 has a 1.3-inch display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels. The device seems to come with a rubberised strap with stripes over it. The smartwatch packs a 355mAh battery and weighs 30 grams.

Reportedly, it will come with GPS support, however, we aren’t sure if it will also come in a cellular model with support for mobile data. It is expected to have heart rate, blood oxygen level, and ambient light sensors. It will also have a sleep tracking feature. It is touted to come with Bluetooth v5.2 support.

The smartwatch is said to be a budget-centric smartwatch that will run on Google’s Wear OS and come at an affordable price. As of now, the exact launch date of the smartwatch is unknown, but, we expect the company to break the silence soon.

Amazon has just released four new smart switches from its Basics Smart Switches lineup. These products add simple smart control to the existing home lighting. The lineup includes a smart thermostat, a smart indoor air quality monitor, and a smart plug.

The new smart switches were launched recently and are priced between $18 and $21. The third and fourth products are a three-way switch ($18.99) and its accompanying three-way dimmer ($20.99), which helps you to control one circuit from two locations.Amazon Smart Switch

The new Amazon smart switches are compatible with Amazon’s Frustration-Free Setup and Certified for Humans programs. This means that the user will not have installation hassles. The flip side however is that the devices need to be connected to the home’s wiring and require a neutral wire. The Voice Assistant also only supports Amazon’s Alexa.Amazon Smart Switch
