[Update: Also bricking phones] PUBG New State is here, but its unplayable right now

Earlier today (11th November 2021), PUBG: New State had finally launched after being teased months prior. However, while the launch was highly anticipated, it might have been a bit rushed by Krafton as the game seems unplayable at the moment.

A number of mobile gamers keen on getting in early on the fast paced and modern setting of the title were disappointed to find that they are unable to play the game. While the issue isn’t universal, various users have complained about the new game. During launch, many games see day one patch updates that fix server issues or other problems and it seems that the New State isn’t any different. Being unable to connect to the server is one of the most common issue as of right now.

Notably, the issue was even acknowledged by the game’s official Twitter account that assured that it is “looking into resolving this issue swiftly.” We can expect the server issue to be fixed by the end of the day but there are also other problems that seems more complicated. As per the official “Known Issues” list shared on PUBG New State’s official website, some Xiaomi smartphones are unable to run the game entirely.

In other words, some Xiaomi users cannot boot the game and are even shown an error that redirects them to a webpage. This site answers some FAQs related to the game crashing. It even adds that “You have been disconnected from the game due to abnormal behavior.” The issues don’t end there as those that managed to get into the game are facing unresponsive controls, random server lags, unresponsive UI, and much more. Keep in mind, its still day 1, and we can expect fixes to be one their way.

Update: We advise that you stay clear of the game for now since reports have surfaced of the game bricking smartphones. Mukul Sharma (@stufflistings) has just tweeted that the game bricked his Android 12 device, while other gamers also took to Twitter to share a similar incident. 91Mobiles downloaded the game on a couple of smartphones as well, with varying degrees of damage. One handset was soft bricked with possibility for recovery while another has been hard bricked.

With Snapdragon Spaces, the chipmaking giant seeks to bridge the gap between smartphones and AR glasses. This, in turn, also implies that various smartphone brands are likely to launch their own AR glasses as well. So to put things simply, your AR glass will work with your smartphone through the new Snapdragon Spaces software. Qualcomm further added that it has made the “Snapdragon Spaces XR Developer Platform” to help developers improve their existing apps while also creating new ones to better utilize the wearable AR products.

Furthermore, the software will also include machine perception technology which will be geared towards both performance and low powered AR glasses from the next generation. Spaces is basically a software that connects your handset to the AR headset/glasses, but the entire process involves a few more details. Apart from just connecting the two devices, the glasses will also become an extension of the compatible smartphone, with the AR device using processing power and telecom connection.

Notably, Snapdragon Spaces would also let developers build 3D applications for AR glasses. As of right now, companies like Lenovo, Xiaomi, and Oppo are the initial partners for the Snapdragon Spaces platform while other app developers like Epic Games are also in collaboration as well. XueZhong Zeng, SVP of Xiaomi stated that “We are looking forward to enabling headworn AR application developers to reach maximum audiences through the open platform of Snapdragon Spaces and our future Snapdragon Space enabled devices.”

Samsung Exynos 2200’s AMD GPU exhibits 34% peak performance improvement over predecessor

Samsung Exynos 2200 official GPU benchmark results are here and they show some significant performance improvements over its predecessor. The peak performance is something to put one’s hands together for while sustained performance is more of a mixed bag.

Notable leakster Tron has posted some figures, reportedly given by none other than Samsung itself. These show that AMD’s RDNA 2-powered 6-core GPU on the Exynos 2200 has a peak performance improvement of +31 to 34% over the Exynos 2100, which is quite a bit considering we typically see +20 to 25% performance gains between generations of CPU or GPU.

However, the sustained performance, or the performance metrics over a given time duration, is less satisfactory with a difference of +17% to +20%. This could indicate throttling, but Tron says that the performance results are based on pre-release hardware and software. We may hence see improvements over time.

Tron has also shared the Exynos 2200 GPU has a big difference in 3DMark performance (Wild Life) over the Snapdragon 888 chip. Of course, the SD888 is a chip from last year so the comparison isn’t exactly fair. But GPUs on flagship Snapdragon processors are known to vastly outperform the competition, so even reaching up to their mark is quite an achievement.

The tweet further reveals that the Samsung Exynos 2200 will be making use of the new ARMv9 architecture that was launched this year. This one focuses big on AI, machine learning, and security, meaning that the E2200 will be benefitting from it all as well.

It remains to be seen how well the Exynos 2200 will be performing against the likes of the Apple A15 and Snapdragon 898, which are its true rivals. The chip had, after all, already beaten the A14 Bionic in one case. But while its peak GPU performance is indeed impressive, most gamers swear by sustained performance since it’s more meaningful, and Samsung still needs to work a bit on that.

Subaru announces its first EV called Solterra in Japan

Subaru has just announced its first electric vehicle, which is the new Solterra. It will be making a debut in the Japanese market, while its US variant won’t be released till next week.

The Japanese carmaker announced the Solterra earlier this week in its home country, but will also be releasing the vehicle in America as well. It is the brand’s first production electric vehicle and is a twin of the Toyota BZ4X that is already in production. Although, the Solterra features a slightly more traditional design styling compared to the Toyota model. The front end sports a hexagonal black trim piece that resembles a front grille, but the inside reveal its just a body color panel.

Furthermore, the Solterra features rear steering wheel while the cabin offers a large center touchscreen along with a number of haptic buttons and a low dashboard, with the interiors feature a orange-ish color scheme. Under the hood, a 71.4 kilowatt hour battery pack powers either the one or two electric motors, depending on whether you go for the front or all wheel drive variant. Subaru claims tha tthe front wheel drive Solterra offers a range of 330 miles on a single full charge while the four wheel drive variant will offer 285 miles.

Notably, the Solterra supports DC fast charging speeds of up to 150 kW, which lets it charge the EV to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. It also houses a heat pump that reduces losses in driving range in cold weather and when the heated seats or steering wheel is in use. The Solterra will even offer buyers a panoramic glass sunroof or a metal roof with integrated solar panels. Other features include support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Subaru’s first fully automated parking assist system, support for smartphone as a key, up to 20 inch wheel sizes, and adaptive LED lights. The EV is expected to go on global sales sometime in mid 2022.

OPPO A55s spotted with Snapdragon chip at Geekbench

Back in January, OPPO unveiled the Dimensity 700 powered OPPO A55 5G smartphone in China. In October, the company unveiled the OPPO A55 4G with Helio G35 chip onboard. Fresh information reveals that the company is now gearing to launch the OPPO A55s smartphone. It appears that its launch could be drawing near as it has appeared at the Geekbench benchmarking site.

Reports surrounding the CPH2309 have revealed that it will be heading to Japan as a SIM-free version. A variant of the phone with the A102OP model number is expected to release through a carrier named Softbank in Japan. The Bluetooth certification listings of the CPH2309 and A102OP have revealed that it will be debuting with the OPPO A55s 5G moniker.

The A55s Geekbench listing that surfaced today revealed that it is powered by a Qualcomm chip that includes six CPU cores clocking at 1.8GHz and two CPU cores working at 2.04GHz. These cluses indicate that the Snapdragon 480 is present under the hood of the device. The chipset is coupled with 4GB of RAM and Android 11 OS. It scored 510 and 1592 in the single-core and multi-core tests of the benchmarking site.

The TUV certification has revealed that the OPPO A55s 5G will be equipped with a 4,890mAh battery. It also reveals support for fast charging. Speculations suggest that the A55s could be similar to the OPPO A54 5G, which debuted in April.

The OPPO A54 5G has a 6.5-inch IPS LCD FHD+ 90Hz display, Snapdragon 480 chipset, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB / 128 GB of storage, and a 5,000mAh battery that supports 10W charging. It also features a 16-megapixel front camera, a 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 2-megapixel + 2-megapixel quad-camera system, and a side-facing fingerprint scanner.

Samsung S22 series may ditch Exynos in favor of Snapdragon in African and Asian markets

Everyone knows that Samsung launches two variants of its Galaxy S series smartphones every year. One uses the company’s in-house processor solution called Exynos while the other is powered by Snapdragon chips. The latter is reserved for the US market alone usually, but as it now appears, things might be a bit different with the Galaxy S22 series.

A rumor had been doing rounds previously about Samsung ditching the Exynos variant entirely for the entire S22 lineup and shipping it with processors from Qualcomm instead (Snapdragon 898 to be precise). These rumors have now been laid to rest by reliable tech blogger Max Weinbach who has confirmed there will still be an Exynos version for certain parts of the world.

Galaxy Club had previously reported that the African and Asian variants of the Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra will be coming with Snapdragon chips for the first time. The United States will continue to get the Snapdragon variant, while the Exynos 2200 variant will be launched in Korea and the rest of the world. This report sits in line with Max’s tweet, thus confirming the entire thing.

Another bit worth highlighting here is that Asia and Africa will be getting separate variants of all three phones with separate model numbers, namely SM-S901E, SM-S906E, and SM-S908E. This could mean that there will be other spec differences between them.

Nevertheless, Qualcomm Snapdragon fans will be thrilled to know that Samsung will be selling more of the Snapdragon variant this time around. Snapdragon variants have, after all, always outperformed their Exynos counterparts whether it comes to performance, battery life, or thermal control.

The only downside will be that the Exynos 2200 will for the first time likely be coming with raytracing support, made possible with the integration of an AMD GPU. While it remains to be seen if this will help the Exynos 2200 outperform the Snapdragon 898 in terms of graphics, an AMD GPU will likely be a significant upgrade over Mali GPUs from the past.

This decision is big deal considering this simple feature has been in the platform since basically the start, and the vast number of users on the popular video sharing platform will no longer be able to determine the overall reception of the video. YouTube believes that this change is better from a creator’s standpoint, as content creators/YouTubers will now be better protected against harassment and reduce the threat of what it refers to as “dislike attacks.”

For those unaware, this is essentially when a number of users team up to raise the number of dislikes that a video receives. According to the company, the dislikes count will no longer be visible to the users, although, the dislike button itself will not be removed. So, users can still click the thumbs down button but the actual count of these dislikes will only be visible to the creator of the video alongside other statistics related to their video via YouTude Studio.

Notably, the move from the company arrives after an experiment that it ran earlier this year. The purpose of this experiment was to find whether these changes would reduce dislike attacks and creator harassment. The company also explained that the dislike count affects creators’ well being and could motivate targeted dislike campaigns. Although while the reasoning might be sound, the dislike button was also quite useful for other reasons as well. Before, one could determine if a video is misleading through clickbait, or even if its potentially scam by looking at the dislikes.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE’s Exynos model could be heading to India

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Fan Edition is set to debut in early 2022. Like the S21 models, the S21 FE is also expected to arrive in Snapdragon and Exynos variants. Fresh information reveals that India could be treated with the Exynos model.

The Snapdragon 888 and Exynos 2100 chipset variants of the Galaxy S21 Fan Edition have both surfaced at the Play Console. Reliable tipster Stufflistings has claimed that the Exynos 2100 edition of the S21 FE will be heading to India.

To recollect, the Galaxy S20 FE 5G was made available first in Exynos 990 chipset version last year. Later, the company also released the Snapdragon 865 model of the phone in the Indian market.

Coming back to the S21 FE’s Play Console listings, they only reiterate what surfaced in the previous reports. However, they do suggest that it will come preinstalled with Android 12. The recently seen Geekbench listing of the phone hinted that it would come preloaded with Android 12 OS.

The Galaxy S21 FE’s specifications have already leaked several times in the past. It features a 6.41-inch AMOLED panel display with a centrally placed punch-hole. It produces a Full HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.

For selfies, the S21 FE has a 32-megapixel camera. Its back panel has an OIS-ready 12-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens, and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

The European Union’s General Court has ruled that the European Commission was right in fining Google for an antirust breach for which the technology giant was fined 2.42 billion euros, approximately $2.8 billion.

A few years ago, in 2017, EU’s competition watchdog European Commission found that Google had favored its own comparison shopping services and fined the company for breaching antitrust rules. The search engine giant then contested the claims to the second-highest court in the EU and has now lost the appeal.

The court has confirmed that the company will need to pay the fine of 2.42 billion euros. The Alphabet-owned company also has an option to appeal this verdict and take the case forward to the EU’s highest court.

In a press release, the court said: “The General Court finds that, by favoring its own comparison shopping service on its general results pages through more favorable display and positioning, while relegating the results from competing comparison services in those pages by means of ranking algorithms, Google departed from competition on the merits.”

The company said it made changes in 2017 to comply with the commission’s decision. In a statement, the company said: “Our approach has worked successfully for more than three years, generating billions of clicks for more than 700 comparison shopping services.”

After this anti-trust fine in 2017, the commission followed by two other major antitrust penalties against Google, totaling 8.25 billion euros ($9.5 billion), which the company is appealing. The fines are a drop in the bucket for Google’s parent company which earned $182 billion in revenue just last year.

Rivian, a US-based electric vehicles maker, made its debut on Wall Street and despite being a relatively young company, investors have now placed it in the same league as the most recognized brands in the auto industry.

On the first day of trading after its initial public offering (IPO), the company’s stock jumped 29 percent which gives it a market valuation of $86 billion. This is in line with the valuation of General Motors and higher than Ford’s.

What’s interesting about its valuation is that the well-known brands, among which Rivian now sits, produce millions of vehicles a year while Rivian started delivering its vehicles just this year, although the company has been around for over a decade now.

The bullish nature of the investors towards the electric vehicles market seems to have helped the company as they are now betting big on companies that show future promise and appear to have the ability to lead the market.

Compared to Tesla, which is currently the leader in the EV market, the valuation of Rivian is still a fraction of Elon Musk-led company which now has a market cap of over $1 trillion. Rivian is trading under the symbol “RIVN” on the Nasdaq.

Amazon and Ford are the investors in Rivian, holding 20 percent and 12 percent stake respectively, which is now worth around $17 billion and $10 billion. A couple of months ago, Amazon had valued its investment in the EV maker at around $3.8 billion.

Rivian was operating in stealth mode since 2009 and launched its pickup truck and SUV in November 2018. The company started with the aim of launching the Tesla Roadster competitor, but it pivoted to making SUVs and pickup trucks. It has been investing heavily to ramp up production, including for its upscale all-electric R1T pickup truck.

Earlier this year, Amazon announced the purchase of 100,000 delivery vans which will be produced by Rivian as a part of the online retail giant’s ‘Climate Pledge.’ The new delivery vans for Amazon are already operational in some regions in the United States.
