Apple iPhone and MacBook in 2022 could be powered by 3nm chipset

Apple has been working on transitioning its Mac devices to its own Apple Silicon — the process which the technology giant started last year with its M1 chipset. The company has been using its own chips for smartphones.

Currently, the devices powered by Apple’s own chipset are manufactured using the 5nm process by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, widely known as TSMC. But it seems that the technology is about to get upgraded in the coming year.

Apple Logo

As per the latest report by DigiTimes (via MacRumors), Apple’s iPhones and Mac devices getting launched next year could come powered by a chipset that is built using the 3nm process. TSMC is set to start mass production of 3nm chips in the second half of 2022 and thus Apple’s devices powered by the new chips could launch the same year.

While we have heard about TSMC starting production of 3nm chips in 2022 and brands like Apple and Intel among the first beneficiaries, this is the first time we are hearing about the upcoming 3nm processor powering the iPhones and Macs launching in 2022.

Earlier, it was reported that Apple has already booked TSMC’s entire production capacity for the 4nm chips for MacBooks powered by the Apple Silicon. However, there’s no information available about its timeline.

Compared to the current 5nm process, the new 3nm process should reduce power consumption by 30 percent and increase performance by 15 percent. TSMC, the world’s largest contract manufacturer of chips, will begin production of 3nm chips with a capacity to process 30,000 wafers. The company will expand production capacity to 55,000 units in 2022 and within a year after that, it plans to expand to 105,000 units a month.

Apple’s A14 Bionic chipset is manufactured using a 5nm process and the next-generation A15 SoC will be manufactured using the 5nm+ or NP5 process. It is basically a performance-enhanced process of 5nm node which also brings power efficiency. It is reported that TSMC has allocated most of its resources for Apple’s orders.

Apple iPhone 13 to bring Portrait Mode and ProRes for videos

Apple is expected to launch its upcoming iPhone 13 series either in September or October this year. Just like every year, the upcoming iteration of the iPhone will bring small, yet refined changes, and this time, for cameras, fast charging, and storage. Now, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reveals that Apple will bring Portrait mode for videos.

Apple officially released the Portrait mode(for photos) feature back in 2016 with the iPhone 7 series. Now, it is touted that the iPhone 13 series will bring this feature to videos. The Portrait mode for videos will work similarly to photos where the depth sensor will produce a blur effect for the background while only focusing on the subject.

Apple iPhone 13 to bring Potrait Mode and ProRes for videos

Additionally, Apple is also said to offer ProRes feature for videos in the upcoming Apple iPhone 13. The feature will let users record videos in higher quality with a format easier for editing in post. This feature will be similar to the ProRaw feature seen in Pro models of the current iPhone 12. That said, the ProRes will also be exclusive to the Pro models of the upcoming iPhone 13.

Apart from video captures, Apple is also planning to update its existing photo filters with some new filters. Also, instead of applying a filter to the entire image, the upcoming iPhones will allow users to apply filters on specific objects.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro Render Colors

Other than this, the Apple iPhone 13 series is expected to come with a LiDAR scanner. The series is expected to come with a slightly smaller notch and will have a 120Hz refresh rate. Notably, the higher refresh rate is expected only in the Pro variants. Under the hood, the series will board Apple’s A15 chip paired with up to whopping 1TB storage.

According to a leak, the upcoming iPhones are expected to feature improved fast charging support. Instead of 20W fast charging, the upcoming iPhone series is rumored to support 25W fast charging technology.

Amazon and GoPro file lawsuit against Chinese sellers over counterfeit products

Knockoffs are a huge problem plaguing online marketplaces like Amazon and to tackle such issues, the online retail giant had created a Counterfeit Crimes Unit in June last year. Now, the unit seems to have taken its first action.

Amazon and GoPro have sued seven Chinese nationals and a couple of businesses for distributing hard-to-detect knockoffs of its “Handler” floating camera handgrip and “3-way” tripod grip that uses GoPro’s own logo.

GoPro Hero9 Featured

The lawsuit was filed in April this year and has just been unsealed because a parallel investigation against the same sellers is ongoing in China. The lawsuit claims that some of the buyers were fooled by the fake products but it doesn’t reveal the number of people who actually bought these fake products.

As for taking action, Amazon says that it blocked the seller accounts of these defendants after counterfeits were brought to the company’s attention. The company also added that it sent samples of the products to GoPro to help the investigation.

Kebharu Smith, Director of Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit said, “When counterfeiters attempt to sell in our store, they not only violate the intellectual property rights of companies like GoPro, they also mislead consumers and harm Amazon’s reputation as a place to buy authentic goods.”

Amazon contends that the problem of counterfeit products on its platform isn’t widespread. It says that in 2020, less than 0.01 percent of all products sold on its marketplace were the subject of a counterfeit complaint from customers. But Amazon doesn’t reveal how many products it has on its storefront, so it’s impossible to tell how large “0.01%” might be.

The company is talking about counterfeit complaints filed by the customers so the number of such products on the platform could be much more given that not everyone can tell apart the fake goods and not everyone who finds out decides to complain about it.

Honor Magic 3 will be the first smartphone to feature IMAX Enhanced!

Honor is scheduled to have an extended launch of several products on August 12. This has seen the release of several official teasers and specs sheet for some of these devices, as the company ups the tempo leading to the event. We expect to see more of these teasers and new details ahead of the scheduled August 12 event.

The Honor Magic 3 is one of the devices primed for launch on August 12, and Honor has released an announcement via Weibo that it is partnering with proprietary camera solutions provider IMAX Corporation in conjunction with DTS.

The partnership is to offer superior video and audio experiences for smartphones via IMAX Enhanced. The new arrangement will see the Honor Magic 3 having the IMAX Enhanced audio and video experience. IMAX Enhanced brings the IMAX capabilities to consumers via TVs and projectors previously. It supports 4K HDR videos with DTS audio on HDR10+ displays. Honor says the Magic 3 will be the first smartphone to have the IMAX Enhanced feature offering an expanded aspect ratio and immersive sound.

The Weibo page also showed a circular camera set up looking like a film reel. This could indicate the circular cam design for the Honor Magic 3. The Honor Magic 3 is powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ chipset, which could provide an indication of an increasing partnership between Honor and chipmaker Qualcomm.

Speculation surrounding the price of the Honor Magic 3 indicates that it could be sold at 4,000 Yuan (~$616), although we expect official pricing information and global availability details before the launch event proper. We also expect the unveiling of a few more devices from the Magic 3 series on August 12.

HP Chromebase is a Chrome OS AiO with a rotating display

There are not a lot of All-in-Ones (AiO) powered by Chrome OS but if you are on the lookout for one, especially for your home, then the new HP Chromebase should be on your radar.

HP Chromebase

The specifications of the HP Chromebase are not bad but the highlight of the computer is its 21.5-inch 1080p IPS touchscreen that can rotate 90º clockwise into a portrait position. The mechanism is so smooth that it can be flipped with just a finger and a little push from the top right corner as seen in a hands-on video by Chrome Unboxed.

You might be wondering why you need your screen in portrait mode, but it turns out that this mode is best for Android apps running on Chrome OS. It is also a more efficient use of the screen when scrolling through a web page or viewing a document as a lot more content fits on the screen compared to when in landscape mode.

The display of the HP Chromebase is attached to a cone-shaped fabric-covered aluminum base that is home to the internals as well as two B&O 5W speakers, two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, and an audio jack. The computer has a starting price of $599 and comes with a Pentium Gold processor for the base model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The pricier models have a 10th Gen Core i3 processor, up to 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of SSD storage.

There is a 5MP webcam and a shutter at the top allows you to not only cover the camera but also mute the microphone. It also has Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. HP ships the Chromebase with a matching white keyboard and mouse and a 90W power adapter.

Xiaomi gifts all 184K Mi 1 first-time buyers a ¥1999 (~$308) voucher

At the Xiaomi event today, the CEO, Lei Jun, announced that it will be refunding all the first-time buyers of its very first smartphone, the Mi 1, announced 10 years ago.

The manufacturer revealed that it had sold 184,600 units of the smartphone which had a launch price of ¥1999 (~$308). The total revenue generated from the sales was over ¥370 million and that money has helped Xiaomi attain its present-day status as the second-largest phone brand in the world.

Xiaomi Mi 1 refund

As a way to show its appreciation to these early adopters who put their trust in the company, Xiaomi says it is refunding the cost of the phone. However, since refunding each buyer will be too much of a hassle, it has converted the refund into a voucher of the same amount. The voucher can be used towards the purchase of any item on the Xiaomi online store.

The Mi 1 was announced in August 2011. The phone had a 4-inch LCD display, 1GB of RAM, a Snapdragon S3 dual-core processor, a single 8MP rear camera, a 2MP front-facing camera, and a plastic body.

Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro and Apple iPad Pro M1 are two of the best tablets in terms of camera performance. Overall, the iPad Pro M1 is superior with its 12 MP main sensor including OIS, a 10 MP ultrawide camera, and a TOF 3D LiDAR scanner for AR appliances. But the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro is still a great camera tablet with its 50 MP main camera (only available in the 5G variant) and a 5 MP ultrawide sensor.

Battery

The battery capacities of these two tablets do not differ too much: 7538 mAh for the iPad Pro M1 and 8600 mAh for the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro. Despite the iPad Pro M1 has a smaller capacity, the battery life should not be so far due to the great optimization of iPadOS. But the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro has a much faster charging technology with a power of 65W instead of the 18W found on its rival.

Price

Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro debuted in the Chinese market with a €330/$387 starting price, while iPad Pro M1 starts from €780/$915. The iPad Pro M1 wins the comparison as it is a much better tablet than the latest Xiaomi flagship, but its price is more than twice superior to the Mi Pad 5 Pro. That is why the Xiaomi tablet offers a way higher value for money.

OnePlus teases a dual-screen phone to be announced tomorrow but don’t get too excited

Back in 2019, Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, said that there are no plans for a foldable phone anytime soon. A year later, the founder revealed in an interview that existing technology isn’t good enough for foldable phones. Based on the standpoint of the manufacturer, we do not expect a Galaxy Z Fold rival from them anytime soon. However, it appears OnePlus has a surprise for us tomorrow according to a teaser it posted earlier today.

The official OnePlus USA Instagram and Twitter account both shared a short clip of a phone and a date that is for tomorrow, August 11 (yeah, the U.S. goes with MM/DD/YY). The dual-screen device reminds us of LG’s Dual Screen case which when attached to select devices such as the LG V60, gave it a second screen. Does it mean OnePlus plans to announce a dual-screen accessory for its existing phone(s) or a dual-screen phone tomorrow? We are not sure but a trusted source says we shouldn’t be excited.

Young leaker, Ishan Agarwal, who has leaked multiple OnePlus devices in the past has said that the teaser is just two OnePlus 9 Pro phones put together. So it is safe to assume that this isn’t necessarily a new product.

There is a possibility OnePlus is teasing a special promotion, which makes sense considering that every Wednesday is OnePlus Day, its weekly deals day. So this may be a BOGO (Buy One, Get One Free) promo for the OnePlus 9 Pro but with a special teaser to get people talking. The timing is perfect too since Samsung is announcing the Galaxy Z Fold3 tomorrow.
