Lei Jun spotted at SAIC headquarters after visiting multiple car companies over the past few weeks

A couple of months ago, in March this year, Xiaomi officially announced the commencement of its smart electric vehicle business which will be led by the company’s founder and CEO Lei Jun.

Since then, the smartphone maker has been in talks with several car manufacturers for a partnership but nothing has materialized so far. Lei Jun has been visiting automakers and the latest company added to the list is SAIC.

Xiaomi's Lei Jun visiting SAIC Headquarters

Lei Jun, founder, CEO, and chairman of the Xioami Group visited the SAIC headquarters and some users shared photos of the same online. So far, he has visited BYD, Great Wall, Wuling, and some other well-known automakers as the Chinese tech giant is gearing up for its Smart Electric Vehicles business.

For those who are unaware, SAIC Motor Corporation Limited is a multinational automotive design and manufacturing company headquartered in Shanghai.

Lei Jun said that in the past 75 days, Xiaomi’s management has had 85 industry visits, in-depth exchanges with more than 200 automotive industry veterans, four internal management discussions, and two formal board meetings.

Explaining the intention for Xiaomi to build cars, he emphasized the company aims to offer high-quality smart electric vehicles to allow users globally to enjoy ubiquitous smart life. He further added that “I am willing to bet on all the reputation and achievements of my life to fight for Xiaomi cars!”

For this new wholly-owned subsidiary to work on the electric vehicles and related business, it plans to invest around 10 billion yuan (~$1.5 billion) but over a period of 10 years. It’s likely that the upcoming smart car from the company will be a consumer product and will be targeted at the mass market.

Apple iPad Mini 6 with revamped design expected to launch this fall

Apple has been revamping its MacBook and iMac devices with a new design as well as adopting its own Apple Silicon chips instead of Intel chips. The company recently launched the iPad Pro powered by the Apple M1 chipset — the same chip that powers most of the newly launched computers from the brand.

Now, a new report coming from Mark Gurman through Power On newsletter claims that the Cupertino-based tech giant is reportedly gearing up to launch a revamped version of the iPad Mini in the fall this year. The upcoming iPad Mini 6 is speculated to launch along with the larger-display model of the Apple iMac.

The newer model of the iPad Mini is expected to come with some major design overhaul, including thinner bezels. The brand is also touted to get rid of the Home button. In what is billed to be the “biggest redesign in the nine-year history” of the device, Mark Gurman claims it will be similar to the alterations made to the iPad Air.

Leaked images related to the device have pointed to the iPad Mini having the same footprint as the current model, with only a 3mm difference. It is said to measure 206.3mm x 137.8mm x 6.1mm in dimensions and will be available in three colors options — Silver, Black, and Gold. The Lightning port has been switched for USB-C port, and Touch ID will remain on the device in the form of a power button sensor.

Although the iPad Pro is powered by the M1 chipset, we expect the company to launch this upcoming model powered by the Apple A-series processors to differentiate between the Pro and Mini models in terms of performance.

Apple is also rumored to launch a new model of the iMac which will have a bigger display compared to the recently announced 24-inch iMac. The new model is likely to have a 27-inch screen or larger and is likely to be powered by the M1X or M2 chipset.

Nokia sues Chinese smartphone maker OPPO for patent infringement

Nokia is one of the early players in the mobile phone industry and thus, the Finland-based company holds multiple patents that it licenses to other companies. To protect its intellectual property, it sues those who use the patented work without permission.

In line with that, Nokia has now sued the Chinese smartphone company OPPO for patent infringement in four countries — England, France, Germany, and India.

Nokia Logo

As per the report, OPPO has refused to renew the licensing agreement that allows the use of certain patents. Nokia had signed the agreement with the Chinese company back in the year 2018. It appears that Nokia is using the same legal teams that won the previous patent enforcement campaign against Lenovo and Daimler.

In its official statement, Nokia said that there have been negotiations between the two companies, but OPPO decided to go on its own and rejected all offers. It says: “We have been negotiating the renewal of our patent licensing agreement with Oppo but unfortunately they have rejected our fair and reasonable offers. Litigation is always our last resort and we have offered to enter into independent and neutral arbitration to amicably resolve the matter. We still believe this would be the most constructive way forward.”

On the other hand, OPPO says that Nokia’s action in the matter is “shocking” and has accused the Finnish company of dishonouring the patent licensing under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.

It’s noteworthy that the issue is not related to the Nokia’s OZO Audio Technology which OPPO has been using on several of its smartphones, including the Find X series and the Reno series. The exact patents of Nokia that OPPO is infringing has not been disclosed.

Google Pixel 6 Pro live shot spotted, reveals curved display, unique dual-tone design

Google is likely to announce the Pixel 5a mid-range phone in August. In October, it is expected to unleash the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. A recent leak revealed all the major specs of the Pixel 6 duo. Now, a live shot of the Pixel 6 Pro has appeared on the web to reveal its front and rear design.

In the image, the Pixel 6 Pro can be seen sporting a punch-hole display with curved edges. The handset has a marvelous appeal from the front as it flaunts super-slim bezels. The absence of a physical fingerprint scanner suggests that the device could be equipped with an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

The Pixel 6 Pro’s back panel has a dual-tone with a horizontal camera strip, which seems to house a triple camera setup and an LED flash. The presence of a rectangle-shaped camera suggests that it is equipped with a periscope zoom lens.

Google Pixel 6 Pro real images
Live shot of the Pixel 6 Pro

The “GR1YH” model number is found mentioned at the bottom of the phone’s back panel. Past reports have revealed that this model number belongs to Google’s upcoming Pixel phone that is codenamed as Raven, which is expected to release the Pixel 6 Pro.

While the device shown in the live shot resembles the Pixel 6 Pro CAD renders that appeared in May, it is advisable to take this leak with a grain of salt since its authenticity could not be confirmed. Generally, Pixel phones are designed by Google, manufactured in China, and shipped in the U.S. Hence, the “made in the US” text that can be seen next to the model number further makes us doubt the authenticity of the image.

Google Pixel 6 Pro specifications (Rumored)

The Pixel 6 Pro is expected to feature a 6.71-inch P-OLED display, a 12-megapixel front camera, and a 50-megapixel (main) + 48-megapixel (telephoto) + 12-megapixel (ultrawide) triple camera system. It will be powered by powered Google’s own custom-made chip, 12 GB of RAM, and a 5,000mAh battery that may support fast charging. It may arrive in 128 GB / 256 GB / 512 GB storage choices, and it will run on Android 12 OS.

Meizu resurrects Blue Charm line: creates accounts for tablet, watch, and more

There was a time Meizu was one of the top smartphone companies in China. The brand, with its famous blue logo, was also one of Xiaomi’s biggest rivals, thanks to its affordable line of smartphones that sold under the Blue Charm line.

Following a change in its business model that resulted in it scaling down its business significantly, Meizu has focused on flagship phones. It has been a few years since it announced a new product under the Blue Charm line, but that may change soon as Meizu has resurrected the division, and this time, it appears it will be bigger.

The Chinese manufacturer has registered multiple new Weibo accounts under the Blue Charm (Charm Blue) name, and they hint at the new products that will be announced by the resurrected division. These accounts include Blue Charm Tablet, Blue Charm Watch, Blue Charm TV, and Blue Charm Router.

Based on the names of the aforementioned accounts, one can easily deduce that Meizu plans to launch tablets, watches, TVs, and routers under the Blue Charm line. We are particularly excited to learn that Meizu will be entering the tablet market.

The Blue Charm line is known for offering affordable products just like Xiaomi’s Redmi division, so we should see Meizu’s upcoming products arrive as alternatives to Redmi-branded ones.

All four accounts have not yet made any posts, so we don’t have any information on when to expect the new Blue Charm products. However, we expect more details will surface in the coming weeks or months.
