Apple likely to face Anti Competitive charges by the EU later this week

Apple is expected to face anti competitive charges by the European Commission later this week. The news arrives over concerns that its the company’s App Store would break EU competition law.

According to a FinancialTimes report (Via MacRumors), the charges are regarding a two year old antitrust dispute with Spotify, the popular music streaming platform. For those unaware, Spotify filed a complaint back in 2019 with the European Commission alleged that the Cupertino based giant enforced App Store rules that “purposely limit choice and stifle innovation at the expense of the user experience,” accusing the company of “acting as both a player and referee to deliberately disadvantage other app developers.”

Spotify had even accused the iPhone maker takes a 30 percent commission on every App Store purchase. This includes in app subscriptions, which forced the music streaming service to charge existing subscribers 12.99 US Dollars per month for its Premium plan on the store just to collect 9.99 US Dollars per month for its usual charges. The app is also arguing that the tech giant is abusing its unfair advantage since it is unable to compete with its own music streaming platform, Apple Music.

Notably, the antitrust case from Spotify is just one of several charges opened by the European Commission into Apple’s business practices since June 2020. Just last month, EU regulators were in the process of finalizing a charge sheet against the company in relation to Spotify’s antitrust complaint. Meanwhile, Apple has denied allegations of anti competitive behavior and stated that its rival Spotify was using “its financial motivations in misleading rhetoric.”

Apple has apparently entered mass production for the second generation of its in house Silicon processor for its upcoming MacBook Pro models that is expected to launch in the second half of this year.

According to an AppleInsider report, sources told NikkeiAsia that the M2 processor has entered volume production earlier this month. As per people familiar with the matter, it is possible that shipments could begin as early as July. The sources also stated that the new processors will first be seen in the new MacBook Pro models. Similar to the M1 processor back when it launched, the Cupertino based giant is expected to launch the new processor across a wider range of products later.

The company’s M2 processor is likely to arrive with various improvements in terms of performance and optimizations. Unfortunately, it is still too early to offer any concrete statements. Thus, we will have to wait for more leaks or an official company announcement to know for sure, so stay tuned for more as we will be providing updates when additional informational is available regarding the matter.

Late last month, OnePlus rolled out a new system update for the OnePlus 6 and the OnePlus 6T. A month later, these old smartphones are receiving another OTA update. The latest firmware for the brand’s yesteryear flagship devices comes with build number OxygenOS 10.3.10.

OnePlus is rolling out a new system update for the OnePlus 6 and the OnePlus 6T from 2018. The new update arrives with firmware version OxygenOS 10.3.10.

The announcement post on OnePlus Community only lists two changes. According to the official changelog, this new update bumps up the security patch level to April 2021.

Apart from this month’s security patches, the latest system update for these smartphones also brings fixes for known issues and improves system stability.

Upcoming Huawei PKU-AL40 with full specifications, images spotted at TENAA

A new Huawei smartphone with PKU-AL40 model number has received approval from the TENAA regulatory body of China. While the final product name of the device is yet to be confirmed, the TENAA listing of the PKU-AL40 has revealed its entire specifications and images.

The Huawei PKU-AL40 is a 4G LTE smartphone that houses a 6.5-inch LCD screen that delivers an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels. it has a front-facing camera of 5-megapixel.

The rear camera array has an LED flash, a 13-megapixel main camera, and a 2-megapixel secondary shooter. The device seems to be lacking a fingerprint scanner.

The PKU-AL40 Huawei smartphone is preinstalled with Android 10 OS. It is powered by an octa-core processor that works at 1.80GHz. It is likely to arrive in China with 4 GB / 6 GB RAM editions and storage options like 64 GB and 128 GB.

The Huawei PKU-AL40 has a 3,900mAh battery, but there is no word on whether it carries support for fast charging. The handset was certified by the Bluetooth SIG authority last month through which it was revealed that it supports Bluetooth 5.0.

The TENAA listing further revealed that the Huawei PKU-AL40 has 163.93 x 75.79 x 8.95mm dimensions and it weighs 198 grams. It is expected to arrive in color editions like Magic Night Black, Frosty Silver, and Spruce

The smartphone shipments in India in the first quarter of this year saw a record growth of 23 percent year on year, reaching over 38 million units. This marks the highest first quarter shipments in the country but are expected to lower in the following quarter due to the resurgence of Coronavirus in the region.

According to a Counterpoint Research report, the record rise in shipments in the nation arrives as new product launches paired with promotions, new financial schemes, and pent up demand coming from last year. Research analyst Prachir Singh stated that “Continuing with its stellar run, India’s smartphone market registered a third consecutive quarter of record shipments in Q1 2021, riding on pent-up demand. Consumer confidence also increased due to the beginning of a vaccination drive in the country. But these numbers should be taken with caution as a second and more virulent wave of COVID-19 is currently on in the country and is likely to impact the coming quarters. The consumer demand will take a hit due to the ongoing COVID-19 wave and subsequent lockdowns.”

Furthermore, the report also added that the Chinese brands also held around 75 percent share in the first quarter of 2021. In the local market, Xiaomi led with a 26 percent market share followed by Samsung, Vivo, Realme, and Oppo. Xiaomi managed to hold the lead thanks to the expansion of its local manufacturing capacities with new EMS partners. Samsung also maintained a high number of new product launched in its Galaxy M series, Galaxy F series as well as the Galaxy S21 series as well.

The Indian mobile handset market also grew by 19 percent year on year in Q1 2021 due to the strong performance of both feature phones and smartphone segments. The feature phone market saw a growth of 14 percent year on year. Notably, OnePlus led the 5G smartphone market in the region, with a 33 percent market share while Samsung recorded the largest growth in the region at 52 percent year on year.

The realme X7 Pro launched in India in early February. Just like the original that was released in China last year, the Indian variant also debuted with an outdated Android 10-based realme UI operating system. Now, a little over two months after its release, the brand has started recruiting beta testers for Android 11.

In early March, realme revealed that the realme X7 Pro will be part of the realme UI 2.0 Early Access program in Q2 2021. As promised, the company has opened registrations for testers.

According to the official announcement post on realme Community, interested users should be running the latest firmware with build number RMX2121PU_11.A.14. To enroll in the program, users will have to navigate to Settings > Software Update > Gear Icon > Trial Version > Apply Now and submit details.

Not all users will be eligible to try Android 11 on the realme X7 Pro. That’s because the brand has only allocated limited seats and it does not say how much. Hence, the availability of seats will be based on FCFS (First Come First Serve).

Anyway, we would advise you not to register yourself if this is your only smartphone. Because beta builds are always buggy and realme also warns the same. But it is worth noting that you can roll back to the stable channel if you don’t like the realme UI 2.0 Early Access build. However, this process will wipe the internal storage of the device.

Samsung and NPEs seek to acquire LG’s 5G patents

Samsung Electronics and a few other non practicing entities (NPE) have recently been aiming to buy and use LG Electronic‘s fifth generation (5G) mobile patents. This arrives after LG announced that it would be shutting down its smartphone business earlier this month.

According to the KoreaTimes report, a source close to the matter stated that “A lot of NPEs have approached LG Electronics for the possible acquisition of its 5G mobile patents.” Unlike LG’s products, the company’s mobile patents are still considered competitive. This has caused multiple firms to seek its patents including Samsung. An official from the South Korean tech giant said that “We have not reviewed any plans.”

For those unaware, NPEs are firms that holds a patent or patent rights. These companies do not manufacture or produce such patented technology but rather generate profit by licensing it out to other firms. As per the source, LG currently holds patents in LTE and 5G technology that are worth around 901 million US Dollars. In total, the former smartphone maker holds about 24,000 LTE and 5G standard essential patents, which is the third largest nuymber of 5G standard patents, as per data provided by IPlytics.

Furthermore, the company is also ranked 1st in terms of global 4G standard patents for four consecutive years from 2012 to 2016. Thus, after its exit from the mobile market due to the unit being a loss maker, it arrives that no surprise that other firms aim to buyout its patents. An LG Electronics’ official also offered a statement citing that “We cannot confirm the speculation. We are reviewing the use of our network patents in other sectors such as IoT or self-driving.”

A recent report claimed that Realme could be planning to launch a new phone called the Realme X7 Max in India. The report had revealed the color variants and configurations of the device. However, it was incorrectly speculated that it could be based on the Realme X7 Pro Ultra (Extreme Edition), which was announced in China recently. Some reports have claimed the company is planning to launch the Realme GT Neo in India in May. Fresh information shared by a tipster reveals that the Realme GT Neo will be rebranded as the Realme X7 Max in India.

According to tipster Debayan Roy, the specifications of the Realme X7 Max are totally similar to the GT Neo. It was reported by TechRadar last week, that the X7 Max will come in variants like 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 12 GB RAM + 256 GB storage. It may come in color editions such as Mercury Silver, Asteroid Black, and Milky Way.

For selfies, it may feature a front camera of 16-megapixel. Its rear camera setup may include a 64-megapixel primary camera with f/1.8 aperture, an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens with a 119-degree FOV, and a 2-megapixel macro shooter.

The X7 Max may house a 4,500mAh battery and it may support 50W rapid charging. The device may come with LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. It is expected to retain the good old 3.5mm audio jack. The GT Neo is available in China with a starting price of 1,799 Yuan.

MIUI 12.5 is the latest version of Xiaomi’s mobile operating system. The company has been delivering this update to eligible devices for the past few weeks. The latest phones to receive this update are Redmi K40 Pro, Redmi K40 Pro+, and Redmi Note 9 5G.

The Redmi K40 Pro and Redmi K40 Pro+ are basically the same phones with a different primary camera. Hence, these handsets run a common MIUI build. Therefore, they are receiving the MIUI 12.5 update at the same time.

The MIUI 12.5 update for the Redmi K40 and the Redmi K40 Pro+ comes with build number V12.5.2.0.RKKCNXM. It is currently in the Stable Beta phase. That means the new system update is only available for a select few users.

On the other hand, the Redmi Note 9 5G MIUI 12.5 update arrives with build number V12.5.1.0.RJECNXM. It is also in the Stable Beta phase. Most importantly, this update also brings Android 11.

The MIUI 12.5 update for these smartphones should be available for all users in the coming days if there are no major issues with the builds. Similarly, we can soon expect the international versions of these devices to get the update as well.

For those unaware, the Redmi K40 Pro+ is sold as Mi 11i and Mi 11X Pro in the global markets. Whereas, the Redmi Note 9 5G is known as Redmi Note 9T 5G.

Well, Samsung seems to be thinking of a solution to that as it has launched an air conditioner model that you don’t need to get a technician to install for you. The product is dubbed Samsung Window Fit air conditioner.

The Window Fit is a movable air conditioner that also provides users the leverage to move it at will to any room they want it to be. The air conditioner combines an outdoor unit and an indoor unit in one, and it can be installed in any room with a window. All that is needed is a dedicated frame that will be attached to the window, removing the need for a cumbersome installation process. It is also easy to remove the frame when the there is need to install the air conditioner a different room or when it is not in use.

In addition, this product naturally evaporates moisture generated during the heat exchange process through a fan, so there is no need to install a separate drain pipe.

Samsung Window Fit has an excellent cooling performance. It deploys double wind blades that can be switched in four directions, such as left, right, center, and swing, sending strong winds wide and evenly in every corner of the room.

The unit utilizes a digital inverter compressor which has twin inverter that reduces vibration and noise while two cylinders rotate. There is also a twin-tube muffler that reduces the friction noise of refrigerant using two tubes are applied to effectively block noise. When used in the low-noise mode, the noise is at a level of 40dB (decibels). This ensures the device won’t disturb the sleeping owner.

The Samsung air conditioner will be available in blue, beige, gray, and pink colour options. The gadget is priced at 849,000 won (~$764) in South Korea. There is no word yet on when it will enter other markets.

RedMagic NX666J will launch as RedMagic 6R: Bluetooth SIG

Last week, a smartphone called RedMagic NX666J was certified by TENAA. The listing revealed the design as well as all the key specifications of this handset. Now, we have learned the official name of this phone, thanks to its Bluetooth SIG certification.

The upcoming RedMagic NX666J smartphone has been certified by Bluetooth SIG with Bluetooth v5.2. According to the certification, this device will launch as RedMagic 6R (shortened). The handset’s exact brandings will be RedMagic 6 Racing and Tencent RedMagic Gaming Phone 6R respectively.

As per TENAA, this smartphone will sport a 6.67-inch FHD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels) OLED display. It will be powered by a 2.842GHz octa-core processor with support for 5G connectivity. This SoC will be coupled with 6GB/8GB/12GB RAM and 128GB/256GB/512GB internal storage.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra costs 7% less to make than Galaxy S20 Ultra: Report

The cost of producing a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G costs about 533 US Dollars, which is around 7 percent lesser in comparison to its predecessor, the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, as per a BoM analysis.

The analysis arrives from Counterpoint Research, which stated that the Galaxy S21 series has an optimized cost structure with the devices’ cost falling between 400 to 600 US Dollars. The reduction in cost is also helped by the integrated 5G modem in the main chipset, which simplifies the new system and helps bring the cost down. Furthermore, the South Korean tech giant adopting the in house Exynos 2100 processor also enables more cost effectiveness.

Samsung’s ecosystem contributed as high as 63 percent of the total BoM (bill of materials) cost for the international edition. While the device cost lower to produce, it also saw great sales in markets such as Europe and North America. The series overall sales volume in February alone was 22 percent higher than the 2019 Galaxy S20 series, reaching over 3.4 million units in shipments. The report added that the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ were the most cost oriented models, with BoM cost drops by about 12 to 13 percent than their predecessor, the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+.

Parv Sharma, research analyst, commented on aggressive pricing of the Galaxy S21 series stating that, “In line with the price drops, Samsung managed to deftly balance the performance versus cost. It made a significant improvement in computing power with the 5nm process-based mobile platforms, either Snapdragon 888 or Exynos 2100 depending on the sales market, and also introduced a refreshed design for the rear camera bump.”

Acer Nitro series are known for powerful gaming products such as gaming laptops and even monitors. The tech giant has recently updated its gaming monitor lineup with the launch of the Nitro XV252Q F gaming monitor.

The Acer Nitro XV252Q F gaming monitor has as its main highlight, the presence of a 360Hz screen refresh rate which allows for it to be overclocked to 390Hz. This is suitable for e-Sports users who won’t experience serious latency while gaming.

In terms of the key specifications, the Acer Nitro XV monitor features a 24.5-inch LCD IPS panel with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The monitor also arrives with 1ms G2G response time (0.5ms minimum), has a contrast ratio of 1000:1. The monitor also arrives with 400 cd/m2 brightness, 178/178 viewing angles, 8-bit color depth, and a standard 99% sRGB color gamut.

Further, the monitor arrives with support for adaptive-sync which gives VRR support from both NVIDIA and AMD systems. The monitor is expected to bring along the FreeSync Premium certification but it is unclear if any G-sync certifications will be onboard. There is also a Visual Response Boost (VRB) blur reduction backlight mode but t is not as fast as VRR.

The monitor comes with a number of ports for connectivity such as a DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.0 ports and a headphone jack for connectivity your gaming headset. It equally packs two 2W audio speakers which output a rich sound. Just like most gaming monitors, the Acer Nitro XV2’s stand is adjustable in different directions such as tilt, height, swivel, and it can also be rotate 360 degrees.

The price of the Acer Nitro XV2 monitor is yet to be revealed even though Acer has listed it on its website. It is expectegdto retail for around ~€530. However, that isn’t certain so, we expect the pricing and availability details to be disclosed later.

Redmi K40 is now available in a new ‘Ink Feather’ color variant

Back in February, the Redmi K40 series of smartphones had officially been launched in China. The new devices arrived with notable specifications and in multiple colors, and now, it has just launched in a new Ink Feather color variant.

According to an ITHome report, the new color option is now available from the Chinese tech giant. As per official notes, the company has put in extra effort to achieve the new design on the rear panel of the handset. Apparently, the process was complex, with micron level transfers to reproduce the color design that is similar to the Damascus-knife pattern that was available in the K40 Pro and K40 Pro+.

While the high end K40 variants are available in the new color on JD.com, these new versions do not arrive with a change in price and are the same as the other color options. Talking about the device itself, the series aims to be a relatively affordable flagship that is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor and a 4,520mAh battery pack that supports up to 33W fast charging. It is also thin and light, weighing 196 grams and measuring in just 7.8mm in thickness.

The display of the device is a E4 AMOLED panel that supports 120Hz refresh rate and 360Hz touch sampling rate. Furthermore, the rear camera module is a 48 megapixel triple lens system, which includes an 8 megapixel ultra wide angle lens and a 5 megapixel telephoto camera as well.

Xiaomi has launched the MIJIA Double-door Refrigerator 185L in China. The refrigerator was unveiled alongside the MIJIA Cross Four-door refrigerator 496L. The double door model comes in at a cheaper price tag of 1299 yuan (~$200) and is even on pre-sale for 1099 yuan (~$169). This is the largest model for the MIJIA Double-door refrigerator models which already include 118L, 160L, and 170L versions.

The MIJIA Double-door Refrigerator 185L adopts a PCM metal panel. It also has a wide door with a hidden handle design, which is easy to remove and wash. The body of the fridge is 1518mm tall and 525mm long. It can occupy an area of nearly 0.3 square meters, making it suitable for use in small and large apartments.

In terms of capacity, the refrigerator has a total volume of 185L and this includes a 127L refrigerator compartment and a 58L freezer compartment. The refrigerator compartment adopts three-layer adjustable shelves. The height of the layers can be adjusted according to needs.

The freezer compartment adopts a three-layer drawer design. Also, a row of evaporators is added on the top to ensure the cooling effect of the upper drawer. The refrigerator also comes with an automatic low-temperature regulator which is turned on when the ambient temperature is too low. This ensures that the refrigerator works normally. The fridge is also energy efficient as it only consumes around 0.68kWh of electricity per day. It also has a low operational noise level of 39dB.

OPPO A53s 5G debuts as India’s most affordable 5G phone

Earlier this year, OPPO announced the OPPO A55 5G smartphone in China. The same phone has now gone official in India with the OPPO A53s 5G. It has dethroned Realme 8 5G (Rs 14,999) to become India’s most affordable 5G smartphone.

OPPO A53s 5G specifications and features

The OPPO A53s 5G is fitted with a 6.5-inch IPS LCD panel with a teardrop notch. The screen delivers an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels, a 20:9 aspect ratio, and a 60Hz refresh rate.

For snapping selfies, it possesses a front camera of 8-megapixel. The back panel of the device features a 13-megapixel primary camera and a pair of 2-megapixel auxiliary cameras for adding depth effects and for capturing macro shots.

OPPO A55 5G All Colors Featured — OPPO A53s 5G

The Dimensity 700 chipset is present under the hood of the OPPO A53s 5G. It comes with up to 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. For additional storage, it has a dedicated microSD card expansion slot.

The OPPO A53s 5G has a 5,000mAh battery, which supports only 10W charging. It ships with Android 11 OS and ColorOS 11.1. The other features that are packed inside the A53s 5G are dual SIM slot with 5G support, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, USB-C, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a side-facing fingerprint scanner.

OPPO A53s 5G price in India

The OPPO A53s 5G has arrived in two models in India such as 6GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage. They are priced at Rs 14,990 (~$201) and Rs 16,990 (~$228). The handset comes in colors like Crystal Blue and Ink Blue. Flipkart will carry out the first sale of the A53s 5G at 12 PM (local time) on May 2.
