HTC has new 5G phones and AR/VR devices coming this quarter

HTC has surprisingly outlived LG in the smartphone market. Even though the Taiwanese company is also struggling, it has no plans to exit the market yet. Actually, it has new 5G phones planned for this quarter according to a new report.

The info comes from DigiTimes who cites unnamed industry sources. According to them, HTC has plans to launch new 5G smartphones along with new AR/VR products this quarter. These new products are expected to help invigorate sales.

HTC U20 5G
HTC U20 5G gets an official price cut in Taiwan

The manufacturer has also cut the price of its first 5G smartphone, the HTC U20 5G. The phone which launched last June is now selling for TWD$13,990 (~$492), just TWD$1,000 more than the HTC Desire 21 Pro 5G that was announced at the beginning of the year. You do get a more powerful processor, double the storage, and a higher-resolution selfie camera. However, that price is on the high side when compared to the competition.

For its AR/VR plans, HTC wants to release more commercial devices that serve those who need them for communication, work, and education. These new devices should launch under the VIVE series.

All of these products are planned for release this quarter but we won’t rule out the possibility of a delay considering the world is facing a chip shortage issue. Nevertheless, when they do arrive, they should be announced first in Taiwan before a wider release.

Huawei unveils the Smart Screen V-series 2021 with Devialet audio, HDR Vivid cert. & more!

Huawei may have slumped on the smartphone scene but the company still strives to continue to make headway on other aspects of its consumer business arm. Today, the Chinese giant took the wraps off three new smart TV series – X, V, and S series. The models all come with leading technology, cinema-level audio, and video output, and several other features.huawei smart screen V-series

The Huawei Smart Screen V series is the flagship series and is available in four different screen sizes – 55-inch, 65-inch, 75-inch, and 85-inch models.  The TV retains the design of last year’s V-series smart TVs including a front pop-up camera, a narrow bezel on three sides giving users an immersive viewing experience. The Huawei Smart Screen V-series adopts a metal frame manufactured using aluminum alloy with a brushed metal finish, giving it an elegant look. It also uses a 0.3mm ultra-thin high-gloss stainless steel sheet to combine the soundbar and speaker into one design. The screen and the speakers are integrated together with a single black color, making all surrounding features look as if they have disappeared when the screen is turned on.

The peak brightness of the 65-inch, 75-inch, and 85-inch models is 1000nit while the 55-inch model has a peak brightness of 750nit. The 85-inch version also uses a direct-lit matrix partition backlight (168 partitions) system to achieve more flexible backlight partition control. The Brightness Control Pro technology further improves the contrast of the picture by adjusting the real-time divisional brightness of each frame of the picture and achieves deeper dark parts and higher peak brightness.

Further, the Huawei Smart Screen V-series 2021 has a high refresh rate of 120Hz. It also comes with Huawei’s fast and smooth technology which improves videos with low frame rate and boosts them in order to prevent stuttering and allow a smooth and comfortable viewing experience.Huawei Smart Screen V-series

The V-series also arrives as the world’s first new smart screen product with HDR Vivid certification. Each frame in the movie has its own metadata (including key information such as brightness and color). HDR Vivid optimizes the brightness, contrast, and color of each frame through different metadata. This restores the original intention of HDR content creators and provides users with a better visual experience.

In terms of performance, the V-series is equipped with Honghu 818 smart chip, made up of a dual-core Cortex A53 and dual-core Cortex-A73 architecture and clocked at 1.5GHz. The pop-up camera is a 24MP ultra-wide-angle AI camera that supports a 1080P high-definition video chat. With the intelligent portrait tracking algorithm, the camera can recognize the portrait intelligently without moving, so that the character display is always in the middle of the screen. When using the smart screen to watch videos or do other things, you can use the watch and chat function to chat while watching a movie.

Sound quality is also a major selling point of the new generation of Huawei’s smart screens. It adopts an ultra-thin subwoofer with high power, long-stroke, low distortion, thinner thickness, and lower low-frequency dive. Audio modes include Auto, Devialet, Standard, Cinema, Music, News, Custom.Huawei Smart Screen V-series

Among them, the Devialet mode is the product of a joint tuning by Huawei and Devialet. The mode focuses on the two main scenes of music and movie. It deploys the Devalet-style sound effects. It also supports a vertical 3D surround sound field, and sends left and right surround sound to the full-range speakers on the top of the smart screen bringing a better 3D surround effect.Huawei Smart Screen V-series

Huawei Smart Screen V-series runs on HarmonyOS and features newly developed entertainment scene functions. Huawei’s smart screen touch remote control has a built-in NFC tag. With this feature, video and audio contents on a mobile phone can be quickly projected to the smart screen without having to connect via WiFi.

In terms of price, the 55-inch version will retail for 5499 yuan (~$839), the 65-inch version carries a price tag of 7999 yuan (~$1221). The 75-inch Huawei Smart Screen V-series 2021 model is priced at 13999 yuan (~$2,136), and finally, the 85-inch version goes for 21999 yuan (~$3,358). The smart TV models can be pre-ordered on Vmall.

Alleged Huawei P50 series prototype images leak online with a circular camera layout

Huawei has reportedly postponed the HUAWEI P50 series and it is likely launching in June alongside the Harmony OS 2.0. Besides, suspicious prototype images of the Huawei P50 series have now been leaked and it has a circular camera layout, unlike the pill-shape we saw in the renders before.

Alleged Huawei P50 prototype

we have received some mysterious prototype images of the upcoming Huawei P series device. It is likely that the same tipster, who sent the images to other publications like GSMArena, pocketnow has sent it to us too. Anyway, we see the images showing the rear of the device with a circular camera layout.

There are four sensors but we don’t see a periscope lens so it could be the Huawei P50 Pro model. Upfront, there is a curved display with a dual punch-hole cutout probably for the selfies and it is totally different from the single punch-hole that in various CAD renders.

That said, things get fishy if you focus on the attention to details that are visible as you look closer. For starters, the LEICA branding is misspelled and the ring around the layout, which we have seen on devices like Huawei Mate 30, is flushing out to the edges.

Also, we can see that the prototype image doesn’t have the volume buttons, and the earpiece like the Mate 30. Keep in mind that Huawei brought back both these on the P40, Mate 40.

All these hint that this could just be a fake mockup of Huawei Mate 30 or a whole new device under the Huawei P50 series. You can take a look at the images below:

Either way, the Huawei P50 series is so far said to include Huawei P50, P50 Pro, and P50 Pro+. All the renders shared from leakers show that the entire series has a pill-shaped camera layout.

Among these, the Huawei P50 is said to have a 6.3-inch flat display, measure around 156.7 x 74 x 8.3mm. The Huawei P50 Pro, on the other hand, is said to feature a 6.6-inch curved display and measure 159 x 73 x 8.6mm.

The top-of-the-line P50 Pro+ is could have a waterfall display,  Penta-camera setup, OLED curved display and have camera features like periscope lens,  1-inch Sony IMX800 sensor, and more. Let’s wait for more details in the coming days.

Vivo Y19 starts getting the Funtouch OS 11 (Android 11) update

In early January, Vivo shared an official Android 11 rollout plan for India. Accordingly, it has been rolling out updates to various devices lately. The recent ones to get it are the Vivo S1 and Vivo V15 Pro. Now, the Vivo Y19, which isn’t on the list, has started getting the Android 11 update.

Vivo Y19

An OTA update with firmware version rev 6.73.6 is rolling out to the users of Vivo Y19 in India. The update, which weighs about 3.2GB brings the Funtouch OS 11 based on Android 11 OS to the device.

If you recall, the Vivo Y19 launched back in November 2019 in India with FunTouch OS 9.2 UI based Android 9 Pie. The device later got the Android 10 update and is currently running on the software version PD1934F_EX_A_1.70.12.

The latest update will bump the OS to Android 11 features to the Vivo Y19 and if you aren’t familiar with what you are getting, you can read our coverage on the same. That said, this could be the last update for the Vivo Y19 but we appreciate the company for bringing two generations of upgrades.

Vivo, which has recently signed cricketer Virat Kohli as its ambassador, has no plans of bringing OriginOS from China to other markets yet. This plan might change in the future but looks like the global devices are going to stick to the Funtouch OS 11.

Anyway, the update for Vivo Y19 has also optimized issues like home screen editing and display functions. So, if you are in India and own a Vivo Y19, we suggest you update the device ASAP.

Vivo’s plan for April 2021 includes devices like the Vivo S1 Pro, Vivo Z1 Pro, Vivo Z1x. Let’s wait and see when the company will start rolling out the updates.
