OnePlus shifts to Google’s Nearby Share over its own File Dash app for file transfers

The OnePlus 9 series was recently unveiled by the company. But soon after its launch, the owners of the latest flagship realized that the device is missing a feature, namely the company’s File Dash function that offers file transferring.

OnePlus 9R Lake Blue Featured

According to an XDADevelop report, users on Reddit found that the File Dash feature in the latest handsets was missing on the Chinese tech giant’s File Manager app. Initially, it was unclear why the company decided to skip the feature on its new OnePlus 9 lineup. But now, the company officially offered clarification regarding the matter. For those unaware, the File Dash feature is a peer to peer fast wireless transferring solution the allows users to quickly send files from one device to the other through the File Manager app.

In a recent statement, OnePlus revealed that “In order to provide more seamless file transfer experience among Android devices, we have replaced “File Dash” feature with “Nearby Share” feature provided by Google. Users can go to Settings, click “Google,” and then click “Device Connections.” Users can then click “Nearby Share” to transfer files. If the other device does not support Nearby Share, users can transfer files via Bluetooth or other third-party applications.”

OnePlus

File Dash was introduced with the OnePlus 3 back in late 2016 and has been a common feature up till the OnePlus 8T. But the feature is missing with the company’s latest premium grade handset. Although, unless you use the feature often, it is likely not a feature most users would notice if removed.

ASUS ROG Phone 5 India sale date announced

ASUS launched the ROG Phone 5 series in early March. The lineup includes three smartphones, namely ROG Phone 5, ROG Phone 5 Pro, and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate. A month after their announcement, the company has finally revealed the sale date for the vanilla model in India.

ASUS ROG Phone 5 Featured 01
ASUS ROG Phone 5

Although ASUS has announced all the three ROG Phone 5 series phones for India, only the standard model will be available for purchase first. The first-ever sale of the regular ASUS ROG Phone 5 is scheduled to take place on April 15 at 12 PM.

Back in April 2018, ASUS signed a partnership with Flipkart. Since then, most of the company’s products have been sold exclusively on the home-grown eCommerce giant. Hence, the entire ROG Phone 5 series will be also sold on Flipkart.

As far as pricing is concerned, the ROG Phone 5 series will retail for the following price tags in India.

Anyway, as mentioned in the beginning, only the vanilla ROG Phone 5 will go on sale on Flipkart at 12 PM on April 15. Interestingly, there seem to be no bank offers as well.

Customers buying the device will get the usual 5% Unlimited Cashback on Flipkart Axis Bank Credit Card and a coupon to purchase either Google Nest Hub or Nest Mini at a discounted price (₹5,999, ₹1999).

Anyway, it is worth noting that the interested customers can exchange their old device to lower the price by up to ₹16,500.

Samsung offers iPhone users a Galaxy experience through its new iTest app on iOS

Samsung has just launched the new iTest app. It is an application that lets iPhone users experience its Galaxy range of smartphones by offering a mock version of its Android UI on the Apple device.

Samsung

The new app is free and is currently seeing some promotions in New Zealand, as per an AndroidAuthority report. The launch of the iTest app also arrives soon after Tim Cook announced that a large number of its new iPhone users are people that migrated from Android. So, it seems that the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer has launched an app dedicated to iOS users, to showcase its Galaxy series of smartphones on the iPhone platform.

Interestingly, the iTest app has quite a bit of depth as it is not a simply a skin on top of iOS. Rather, the app arrives with a lot of the apps, which the users can open. It also lets iPhone owners check out the app drawer and even use the Galaxy Store and more. To add to the immersion, the app also periodically sends dummy notifications as well to add to the overall experience. However, it is not a full fledged OS and a lot of the apps do not offer complete functionality, and the real notifications still coming through in iOS.

iPhone 12

Although, it is still a unique experience to use the South Korean tech giant’s One UI on an iPhone, without a complex installation process. Another interesting aspect observed on the iTest app was the addition of the ‘Fortnite’ in the Galaxy Store. For those unaware, the game is developed and launched by Epic Games studio, which is currently suing Apple for anti competitive practices on its App Store.

General Motors and Ford temporarily suspends production due to chip shortage

General Motors and Ford Motors have confirmed that the companies are temporarily shutting down production or extending the shutdown at several plants in North America because of the ongoing chip shortage.

General Motors plant closures range from a week or two to several weeks for plans that are already shut down temporarily due to the parts disruption. Next week, the company plans to restart the production of midsize pickups after it was halted for about two weeks.

General Motors Logo

On the other hand, Ford has updated its timeline to include additional downtime at two of its plans in Illinois and Missouri through next week. It is also shutting down its Flat Rock Assembly plant in Michigan for a week, starting from Monday. With these new changes, the vehicles impacted include Explorer, Lincoln Aviator SUVs, Ford Mustang, and Transit Vans.

Semiconductor materials are key components used in the vehicle’s infotainment as well as power steering and braking system among others. Automakers are facing issues related to the supply of semiconductor components as several plans have been impacted due to the COVID-19 pandemic while demand is on the rise.

Ford had previously said that the company expects chip shortage to lower its earnings by $1 billion to $2.5 billion in 2021. On the other hand, General Motors is expected to earn $10 billion to $11 billion this year. This forecast factors in the potential impact of the chip shortage, including a hit of $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion to its free cash flow.

Global chip shortage affects home appliance industry in China

The world is currently suffering from a major semiconductor shortage. This has affected various companies across multiple industries worldwide. Now, the shortage of chips has also affected the vast home appliance industry in China.

China

According to an SCMP report, the Midea Group recently stated that the Chinese home appliance sector is now also suffering from a global shortage. The firm added that the supply of chips is “under pressure in the home appliances industry.” At the moment, Midea has a market cap of about 600 billion Yuan (roughly 91.7 billion US Dollars), which makes it the world’s largest consumer appliance manufacturer. Under its vast electronic portfolio, the company makes appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners.

Midea said the prices of chips used in these home appliances are usually less sophisticated and advanced in comparison to the ones used in PCs and smartphones, but the prices of these chips are expected to rise due to a global shortfall in their supply. Furthermore, this disruption in the supply chain could also hamper the home appliance industry in China and even have a negative impact on the global market for such products.

China

At the moment, China produces two-thirds of the world’s air conditioners, televisions, and microwave ovens, and around half of all refrigerators and washing machines. We had previously reported on how the home appliance market across the globe was being impacted by the recent shortage, and since China is one of the major hubs for such products, it is likely that the supply issue would lead to changes in the manufacturer’s plans in the region to better adapt to the current situation.

Smartphone brands in China are working on their own 5G chips: Report

While Qualcomm and MediaTek are the two primary chip suppliers of smartphone based chipsets, a growing number of Chinese OEMs are working on launching their own proprietary mobile processors.

Smartphone

According to a DigiTimes report, this includes smartphone makers from China like Oppo and Xiaomi, who are working on developing their own 5G SoC. Furthermore, the news also arrives amid a major global ship shortage that has affected various industries across the world. This has even caused companies to struggle to supply semiconductors for their products. Notably, NOR flash chip makers stated that more of their clients are now willing to strike long term supply contracts as well.

Similarly, the demand from MCU clients is also strong in the backend firms. For those unaware, Oppo and Xiaomi are expected to announce their in house sub 6GHz 5G processors sometime between late 2021 and early 2022. This would have both firms join the ranks of other fabless chip makers (firms that design their own chips bt contract production to other companies).

Smartphone

Another vendor that is also working on their own chips includes Unisoc, which will be competing with rival chip makers, Qualcomm and MediaTek, as per sources close to the matter. Talking about the back end firms, companies like SE Technology, Greatek Electronics, Lingsen Precision Industries and Orient Semiconductor Electronics (OSE) are still seeing robust demand for MCUs that are used in a wide array of consumer electronic products, medical care, and even automotive electronics as well.

OnePlus 9R China Launch Date is April 15

Late last month, OnePlus launched the OnePlus 9 series and the OnePlus Watch globally. Unlike other markets, India got a special phone called the OnePlus 9R, which shares most of its specs with last year’s OnePlus 8T. This smartphone has been now confirmed to launch in China next week.

OnePlus 9R Lake Blue Featured
OnePlus 9R

Earlier today, OnePlus officially announced that it will be launching the OnePlus 9R in China on April 15. The launch event is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM (local time).

Since the OnePlus 9R is already official in India, we know everything about this smartphone. But we expect the Chinese variant to be slightly different in some aspects.

First and foremost, OnePlus has switched to ColorOS for OnePlus for its handsets in China. Therefore, just like the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro, the OnePlus 9R should also run ColorOS 11 based on Android 11 in the brand’s home country.

Further, unlike OPPO devices with ColorOS, the warranty should not void on rooting the OnePlus 9R. However, we are not sure if the most affordable OnePlus 9 series phone will debut with a 2-year warranty like its expensive siblings.

Last but not least, according to a leakster, the OnePlus 9R will be cheaper in China than in India. It is tipped to cost under ¥3,000 ($458).

Apple iPad Mini dummy model leak shows home button and thick bezels

In the first half of this year, Apple is rumored to launch the new versions of the iPad Mini and iPad Pro. While the exact date is not yet known, it is expected that the device should be launched this month.

Now, a new leak has surfaced online, revealing the design of the upcoming iPad model, showcasing what we can expect from it in terms of design. Do note that the image is from a dummy version of the upcoming 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro as well as the upcoming iPad Mini 6.

Apple iPad Dummy Model Leak

The CAD-based dummy models are usually sourced from the supply chain in China and are used to aid case makers before the devices are made official. From the images, it appears that the iPad Mini is a bit thicker, complete with a Home button, similar to the previous models. It also has thick bezels on the top and the bottom.

As per the previous reports, the iPad Mini could measure 8.5-inch or 9-inch, in line with the reports that the device could have a larger display. But the exact size of the display cannot be determined through the leaked images.

Another report had claimed that the device will feature an 8.4-inch display with slimmer bezels and a design similar to the iPad Air 3. There are also claims that the new model will continue to feature a Touch ID Home button and a Lightning port.

There are also reports that the upcoming iPad from Apple could come with a Mini-LED display but it is not confirmed if the devices getting launched this month will come with the Mini-LED screen. To get confirmation of this, we will have to wait for the official launch.

iQOO phone with Snapdragon 870 in works for India, iQOO U1x bags BIS approval

iQOO India’s chief Gagan Arora recently revealed that apart from launching the iQOO 7 Legend, the company plans to launch multiple phones this year at different segments. Popular tipster Mukul Sharma has revealed that a Snapdragon 870 powered iQOO phone is in the works for India. At the same time, the iQOO U1x smartphone which was announced back in October 2020 in China has received approval from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Last month, iQOO announced the Snapdragon 870 mobile platform powered iQOO Neo5 in China. The tipster did not share any other information on the iQOO phone with SD870 that has been planned for India. Since the BIS authority has already certified the Neo5, this phone is likely to debut soon in the country. The Indian variant of the phone has also appeared at the Google Play Console. Hence, there is a possibility that the iQOO Neo5 may get rebranded as an iQOO 7 series smartphone.

Design

You should not go for the OnePlus 9 if you are looking for the best design. Despite it may be better in terms of usability, it lacks a curved display and it is less elegant than its two rivals. Due to the bigger dimensions of the Xiaomi Mi 11 and the lighter design of the OPPO Find X3 Neo, I actually prefer the OPPO Find X3 Neo built with premium material, sporting a display with curved edges. I also love its original color variants.

Display

The best display is the one provided by the Xiaomi Mi 11. Besides coming with a wider diagonal which is comfortable for power users, it has a higher Quad HD+ resolution with 1440 x 3200 pixels. Further, it has a very high 1500-nit peak brightness, it shows up to one billion colors, it has a 120 Hz refresh rate and the HDR10+ certification. The second place goes to the OnePlus 9, at least on the paper, due to its 120 Hz refresh rate (OPPO Find X3 Neo has just 90 Hz).

Hardware/Software

With the Xiaomi Mi 11 and the OnePlus 9, you can get better hardware. They are both fueled by the Snapdragon 888 mobile platform, actually the best chipset by Qualcomm. The SoC is paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. The OPPO Find X3 Neo has a weaker Snapdragon 865 which is Qualcomm’s flagship chipset of 2020, but the memory configuration is the same. You get three different user interfaces: the Xiaomi Mi 11 has MIUI, the OnePlus 9 comes with OxygenOS, and OPPO Find X3 Neo has ColorOS: all of them are great customized UIs.

Camera

The most advanced cameras belong to the OPPO Find X3 Neo. The OnePlus 9 has the best ultrawide sensor, but the OPPO Find X3 Neo provides a superior 50 MP Sony IMX766 main camera, a telephoto sensor with optical zoom (which is not present on Xiaomi Mi 11 and OnePlus 9), and a 16 MP ultrawide sensor. The Xiaomi Mi 11 has an amazing 108 MP main camera with 8K video recording capabilities but unfortunately is secondary sensors are pretty disappointing.

Battery

Xiaomi Mi 11 has a slightly bigger battery, but due to its higher resolution and wider display, it does not provide the longest battery life. The OnePlus 9 should be able to last more with its FHD+ smaller display and 5 nm chipset. OnePlus 9 and OPPO Find X3 Neo have faster wired charging technologies, while Xiaomi Mi 11 has faster wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. Unfortunately, OPPO Find X3 Neo lacks wireless charging.

In 2021 there are a lot of flagships with non-excessive prices, not only in China but even in the global market. Among these, we got the first-ever flagship from the Moto G series by Motorola. We are talking about the Moto G100, recently launched in Europe with a great price tag and flagship-class hardware department. Xiaomi came up with a flagship killer as well in the last period: the Xiaomi Mi 11i. This year, Europe got two flagships from the OPPO Find X series: besides the expensive Find X3 Pro, the company decided to also bring an affordable flagship globally: the OPPO Find X3 Neo. Here is a comparison between three of the most interesting affordable flagships out there: Moto G100, Xiaomi Mi 11i, and OPPO Find X3 Neo.

Design

The best design is definitely the one of the OPPO Find X3 Neo. It is the only one with a curved display, it is very thin and lightweight, and it is built with better materials: glass for the back and aluminum for the frame. In case you missed it, the OPPO Find X3 Neo is a rebrand of the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ that is the most powerful handset in the Reno series. The Xiaomi Mi 11i and the Motorola Moto G100 are built with cheaper materials and their designs are less attractive. The Xiaomi Mi 11i provides the IP53 certification making it dust and splash resistant, while the Motorola Moto G100 has a water repellent surface.

Display

On the paper, it looks like the best display is provided by the Xiaomi Mi 11i. It has a higher peak brightness and a higher refresh rate with up to 120 Hz. But we are not sure it is really the best display: we did not compare the AMOLED panel of the OPPO Find X3 Neo directly to the Mi 11i, but we found out it is an amazing panel in terms of color reproduction. The Motorola Moto G100 loses the display comparison due to an IPS panel with worse color reproduction and lower brightness.

Hardware/Software

If you need the best phone in terms of the hardware department, then you should opt for the Xiaomi Mi 11i. It is powered by the most powerful processor by Qualcomm: the Snapdragon 888 paired with 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 native storage. With the OPPO Find X3 Neo you get more RAM (12 GB), but it has an inferior chipset: the 2020 flagship Snapdragon 865 mobile platform. The Motorola Moto G100 sits in the middle with a Snapdragon 870 which is actually an upgrade of the Snapdragon 865. The phones run Android 11 out of the box with the Moto G100 providing a nearly-stock Android experience, while the other two have customized user interfaces.

Camera

The best camera phone is the OPPO Find X3 Neo and it is close to flagship camera phones. It comes with a 50 MP Sony IMX766 main camera with OIS, a 13 MP telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom, a 16 MP ultrawide camera, and a 2 MP macro camera. The Xiaomi Mi 11i remains an interesting camera phone with its 108 MP main camera and 8K video recording, while Moto G100 is the most interesting selfie phone thanks to a dual ultrawide front camera with 16 + 8 MP resolutions.

Battery

The Moto G100 has the biggest battery and, despite its IPS display, it should provide a longer battery life in a lot of scenarios. On the other hand, the OPPO Find X3 Neo wins the fast charging comparison with a 65W power.

Motorola Moto G100 vs Xiaomi Mi 11i vs OPPO Find X3 Neo: Price

Xiaomi Mi 11i has a €649/$773 starting price, Moto G100 costs €599/$714 in its base variant, and OPPO Find X3 Neo costs €799/$952. The winner of the comparison is the OPPO Find X3 Neo due to its better camera, great design, and amazing overall specifications, but the Xiaomi Mi 11i has a better hardware department and Moto G100 a higher value for money.

The Nokia C10 adopts a nearly similar design to the C20. Both models adopt a decent 6.52-inch LCD display with an HD+ resolution of 720pixels and a 20:9 aspect ratio. The LCD screen is capable of hitting a peak brightness of 400 nits and has 70% NTSC coverage. There is also a layer of Panda Glass protection ontop of the display.

Both models are powered by entry-level Unisoc processors with the C20 packing a Unisoc SC9863a processor while the Nokia C10 is powered by a Unisoc SC7331e chip which is the same SoC used on the Nokia C1. The processors are paired with 1GB/2GB of RAM on both models while there is 16GB and 32GB of internal storage onboard the models. If you consider the internal storage inadequate, there is a microSD slot on the smartphones.

For interface, the Nokia C10 and C20 run on Android 11 Go Edition and Nokia is promising to provide two whole years of updates that would be pushed quarterly to the two models. under the hood, there is a 3,000 mAh battery on both models with support for 5W charging over a microUSB port. HTC has new 5G phones and AR/VR devices coming this quarter

HTC has surprisingly outlived LG in the smartphone market. Even though the Taiwanese company is also struggling, it has no plans to exit the market yet. Actually, it has new 5G phones planned for this quarter according to a new report.

The info comes from DigiTimes who cites unnamed industry sources. According to them, HTC has plans to launch new 5G smartphones along with new AR/VR products this quarter. These new products are expected to help invigorate sales.

The manufacturer has also cut the price of its first 5G smartphone, the HTC U20 5G. The phone which launched last June is now selling for TWD$13,990 (~$492), just TWD$1,000 more than the HTC Desire 21 Pro 5G that was announced at the beginning of the year. You do get a more powerful processor, double the storage, and a higher-resolution selfie camera. However, that price is on the high side when compared to the competition.

For its AR/VR plans, HTC wants to release more commercial devices that serve those who need them for communication, work, and education. These new devices should launch under the VIVE series.

All of these products are planned for release this quarter but we won’t rule out the possibility of a delay considering the world is facing a chip shortage issue. Nevertheless, when they do arrive, they should be announced first in Taiwan before a wider release.
