Xiaomi officially announce the Mi Notebook Pro launch for March 29

Several years after its launch, Xiaomi‘s notebook series has come to be a dependable choice for those shopping for affordable laptops that don’t compromise on quality. Unlike the Mi Pad series that hasn’t been updated for a while now due to not-so-impressive sales, the Mi Notebook series has been a hot-selling round of products and it is no surprise the brand is about updating the lineup.

Xiaomi has now officially announced that new models of the Mi Notebook series will be launched on March 29 which is next week Monday. The launch event will hold at 19.30 UTC +8 in China. Mi Notebook Pro

Before now, Xiaomi has been releasing several teasers of the product, giving us some ideas of the top-notch features that would be onboard the notebook PC. The product is clearly the Mi Notebook Pro meaning it is a high-end laptop.

A few days ago, Xiaomi officials had publicly revealed that the Mi Notebook Pro will be equipped with a high-resolution screen, while also claiming that “high resolution is just the starting point.” The company later released another teaser which suggests the Mi Notebook Pro will feature a “master screen”, achieving six new breakthroughs.Xiaomi Although the so-called “breakthroughs” have not been revealed, one of the models are expected to pack a high-quality screen with a 3K resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. The high-end model is also expected to pack an OLED panel, which will bring excellent brightness, contrast, and color performance, far exceeding ordinary notebook products.Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro 2021 Teaser Featured 01

In addition to the top-of-the-line screen, the Mi Notebook Pro is also expected to adopt a new design style, ditching the previous mold. Instead, it will adopt a high-end, all-metal design crafted using one-piece molding. The change to metal design won’t lead to a compromise in the size and weight as the notebook is expected to be thin and ultra-lightweight.

For the first time, Xiaomi is going to inscribe its brand name on the back of the laptop which is an indication that would be a spectacular product. The Mi Notebook Pro 2021, as it is expected to be called, will be equipped with the latest generation Intel Core i7-11375H processor, with a peak core frequency of up to 5GHz. The notebook also said to pack an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics card

Apart from the Mi Notebook Pro 2021, Xiaomi is also expected to unveil the Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra and perhaps the Mi 11 Lite on the same day.

BOE to reportedly supply Samsung flexible OLED panels for the first time ever

China’s leading display screen manufacturer BOE has been rumored to have got the nod from Samsung Electronics to supply flexible OLED displays for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy M series of budget smartphones, according to a report in the Korean media. The partnership between BOE and Samsung Electronics could hold a lot of promise for both Samsung and the Chinese company, going forward. Most of Samsung’s smartphones have displays supplied by its display arm, Samsung Display and it is expected that the flexible OLED displays from BOE would be at par with the South Korean display industry-standard even at a possibly lower cost.

The flexible OLED display technology is a growing area of interest within the market and this holds a lot of promise. A flexible OLED display uses technology and materials different from the fixed glass display commonly available. It is based on a flexible substrate (plastic) material that makes it possible for it to bend. Flexible displays are relatively lighter and thinner in addition to their higher degree of freedom for bending.

It is speculated that the Galaxy M series of economy smartphones with BOE’s flexible display would be launched in the second half of the year, with production processes slated to begin by July. The choice of BOE, known to be supported by the Chinese government, to provide OLED displays for the Galaxy M series, ahead of established Korean manufacturers may be indicative of the progress BOE has made since the US ban on Huawei, which affected it adversely due to its collaboration with Huawei. However, the new realignment with Samsung will certainly draw the attention of other phone makers as they continue to seek ways to cut cost after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Samsung has not made any formal statement yet to confirm or debunk the story at this time.

Qualcomm is making an Android-based game console inspired by the Nintendo Switch

A new report has revealed that Qualcomm is making a game console that will run Android and have a design similar to the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo Switch
Qualcomm’s gaming console has detachable controllers

According to Android Police, they had a look at images of a prototype of the device which is expected to launch in 2022. The photos reveal a device that is inspired by the Nintendo Switch.

The Qualcomm device is said to have detachable controllers on each side. These controllers are said to be designed and manufactured by a big name in the controller industry but there is no hint as to who it is.

The console itself is liked a beefed-up smartphone – thickness or rather, thinness is not the goal here. It is stated that the extra thickness will allow the processor to function better and more efficiently than in smartphones where having the thinnest possible device is a competition between brands.

That extra space also allows for a large 6000mAh battery capacity which is significantly bigger than the Nintendo Switch’s own 4310mAh battery capacity. Qualcomm will also add support for Quick Charge fast charging, so you can get the device back to full charge in the shortest time possible and get back to playing.

A similar design to the Nintendo Switch is not the only feature Qualcomm’s gaming console borrows. It will also support display out, allowing it to be connected to an external display such as a monitor or TV. Unfortunately, we do not know if it will use the USB-C charging port for display output or if it will have a separate port for that function.

Qualcomm will ship the device with Android 12 and it will come with Google apps and services. It has also been reported that the device will have the yet-to-be-released Epic Games Store app in addition to Qualcomm’s own content platform. While there is no confirmation of a partnership with any of the game streaming platforms in existence, it will be wise if it does as that will provide a steady stream of content for owners.

The Qualcomm game console is expected to feature Qualcomm’s next-gen Snapdragon processor and it will have 5G thanks to the Snapdragon X55 modem. It will also have GPS, Bluetooth, accelerometers, and dual-zone haptics.

The source reports that Qualcomm is targeting a price tag of $300 but it is not known if it is for the full device, a 5G model, or maybe even a Wi-Fi-only version. The device is expected to be sold directly to consumers and also via network operators in the United States. It has also been revealed that Qualcomm hopes to inspire its partners to make similar devices.

Qualcomm declined to comment on the story, citing its policy of not commenting on rumors. We will advise you to not get your hopes high as even if it is true, we can’t rule out the possibility of the product getting canceled and not seeing the light of day.

All you need to know: OnePlus Warp Charge 50 Wireless Charger, OnePlus Gaming Triggers, and new phone cases

OnePlus announced a number of new accessories today. Leading them is the OnePlus Warp Charge 50 Wireless Charger and it comes along with the OnePlus Gaming Triggers and a handful of phone cases for the OnePlus 9 series.

OnePlus Warp Charge 50 Wireless Charger

OnePlus Warp Charge 50 Wireless Charger

This new charger comes in white and has two charging coils that allow you o charge the phone in both landscape and portrait modes. It also has a removable USB-C cord.

The OnePlus Warp Charge 50 Wireless Charger has a maximum output of 50W which the OnePlus 9 Pro supports (1% to 100% in 43 minutes). The charger can also charge the OnePlus 8 Pro at 30W and the OnePlus 9 at 15W. It also supports Qi Wireless 15W EPP (Extended Power Profile) charging and 5W BPP (Basic Power Profile).

To charge the OnePlus 9 Pro at a maximum of 50W, OnePlus says you need a charger that supports 65W and above PD protocol. This is also the charger you need to charge other smartphones and devices that support Qi protocol up to 15W. Below are the supported power input ratings:

  • Input – 5V⎓4A 9V⎓2A 10V⎓6.5A 20V⎓3.25A Max

The wireless charger has a silent mode that keeps the power below 15W and the fan speed noise below 23dB. It also reduces the brightness of the LED indicator. The charger learns from the user’s habits and automatically enters silent mode during hours when it is usually not in use. Silent mode can be turned off with a time interval set but the default time is set to between 24:00 to 6:00.

The OnePlus Warp Charge 50 Wireless Charger supports charging with cases not greater than 2mm in thickness. It weighs 180 grams and measures 89 x 70 x 118 millimeters. OnePlus ships it with a 100 centimeters-long Type-C cable. You can use the 65W adapter that comes with the OnePlus 9 series or purchase a charger that supports 65W and above Power Delivery.

Below is the price tag in various regions:

  • India – ₹5,990 (₹3,990 discounted price)
  • USA – $69.99
  • Europe – €69.95 (€55.96 discounted price)

As you can see, OnePlus has kept the price of the OnePlus Warp Charge 30 Wireless Charger which is now listed as “Out of Stock” in a number of stores.

OnePlus Gaming Triggers

OnePlus has launched its first mobile gaming accessory and it is a set of gaming triggers. The triggers clip to the side frame (top when in landscape mode) of the phone. It uses capacitive induction to interact with the display of your device. The triggers use Omron switches which provide users with better tactile feedback based on what happens in the game.

OnePlus Gaming Triggers

OnePlus says it has designed the gaming triggers specifically for Battle Royale games such as PUBG, Call of Duty, and Free Fire. They are also designed to be independent of the side you place them on.

The OnePlus Gaming Triggers are compatible with both Android and iOS devices with a thickness of not more than 11.5 millimeters. They are priced at ₹1,599 in India but will be sold for a discounted price of ₹999. Surprisingly, in the UK and Europe, the product page says £99/€99. We want to believe this is an error or a placeholder price and it is much cheaper, say £9.99/€9.99.

OnePlus 9 series Phone Cases

There are a bunch of cases for the new OnePlus 9 series. The OnePlus 9 Pro has an exclusive bumper case that has a 3D design based on the droid from the OnePlus 5T advertisement. This case is priced at $39.99/€39.95/₹1990/£36.95.

There is also a Karbon Bumper Case and a Sandstone Bumper Case (available in Rock Gray and Sandstone Black) that is available for the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. The Karbon Bumper Case is $39.99/€39.95/₹1990/£36.95 while the Sandstone Bumper Case is priced at $24.99/£22.95/₹790/€24.95. The OnePlus 9R also has a Sandstone Bumper Case that is also ₹790.

All of these accessories are yet to go on sale but they should be available once the phones are available for purchase next week

Xiaomi Mi 11 vs Meizu 18 Pro: Specs Comparison

Meizu abandoned the European market a long time ago, but it is still very strong in China and still comes up with amazing flagship phones. The latest one is the Meizu 18 Pro, released just a few days ago with incredible specifications. Despite this phone will only be sold in China, it has nothing to envy to the flagship from the most important Chinese brands in the global market, including the Xiaomi Mi 11. But does it make sense to choose it instead of such a famous device? This specs comparison between Xiaomi Mi 11 and Meizu 18 Pro will clear your ideas.

Xiaomi Mi 11 vs Meizu 18 Pro

ADDITIONAL FEATURES Dual SIM slot, 5G, reverse wireless charging 10W Dual SIM slot, 5G, water resistant, reverse wireless charging 10W

Design

Xiaomi Mi 11 and Meizu 18 Pro offer a stunning design made with premium materials. The former has a higher screen-to-body ratio, while the latter is more compact and lighter. While you get a slightly more impressive look with the Xiaomi Mi 11, the Meizu 18 Pro, unlike its rival, comes with water resistance: it is a waterproof phone and this is a big added value when you evaluate the build quality. On the other hand, the display of the Mi 11 is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, stronger than Gorilla Glass 6 found on the Meizu. If we only consider the aesthetics, I would actually go for the Meizu 18 Pro because it is a waterproof phone.

Display

These phones are equipped with astonishing displays. We are talking about AMOLED panels boasting a Quad HD+ resolution and very high peak brightness. The Xiaomi Mi 11 is actually superior because it is able to show up to one billion colors and it has higher 1500 nits peak brightness. But the Meizu 18 Pro remains one of the best smartphones out there in terms of displays. With both these phones, you get a 120 Hz refresh rate, the HDR10+ certification, and an in-display fingerprint reader.

Specs & Software

Xiaomi Mi 11 and Meizu 18 Pro are two flagships powered by the Snapdragon 888 mobile platform: the best SoC released by Qualcomm this year. The chipset is paired with up to 12 GB of RAM (LPDDR5) and up to 256 GB of internal storage (UFS 3.1). Given that they have exactly the same hardware department, the software makes the difference. You might like it or not, but the MIUI 12 is actually a more advanced user interface compared to Flyme 9.

Camera

The Meizu 18 Pro is an amazing camera phone and, on paper, it has a better camera setup than Xiaomi Mi 11. It consists of a 50 MP main sensor with OIS, an 8 MP telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom, a 32 MP ultrawide sensor, and a TOF 3D camera for better depth info calculation. Unfortunately, with the Xiaomi Mi 11, you do not get a telephoto sensor and the ultrawide camera is an inferior 13 MP sensor. The Meizu 18 Pro wins even when it comes to selfies thanks to its 44 MP front camera.

Battery

The difference between the battery capacities of these two handsets is not big: Xiaomi Mi 11 has a 4600 mAh battery and Meizu 18 Pro offers 4500 mAh despite its overall dimensions are smaller. There should be only marginal differences between the battery life of these flagships. But with the Xiaomi Mi 11, you get slightly higher charging speeds, thanks to a power of 50W for both wired charging and wireless charging.

Price

The base variant of the Xiaomi Mi 11 is priced at about €518/$614 in China, while you need €640/$759 to purchase the base variant of the Meizu 18 Pro. There is not a definitive winner of this comparison as it depends on your actual needs. The Meizu 18 Pro has better cameras and (unlike the Xiaomi Mi 11) it is a waterproof phone, while Xiaomi Mi 11 offers a better software experience, a slightly better display, and faster charging speeds. Which one would you pick?

Xiaomi Mi 11 vs Meizu 18 Pro: PRO and CONS

Xiaomi Mi 11

PRO

  • Better software
  • Worldwide availability
  • Wider display
  • Faster charging technologies

CONS

  • Inferior camera

Meizu 18 Pro

ASUS ROG Phone 3 first Android 11 Beta update rolling out

Last month, Asus began recruiting testers for the Android 11 Beta program of ASUS ROG Phone 3. A month later, it has finally started rolling out the first Beta build to those Closed Beta testers.

ASUS ROG Phone 3 Tagline Featured

As reported by XDADevelopers, an update with firmware version 18.0410.2101.80 is rolling out to the users of ROG Phone 3. Just like the report says, it’s a closed Beta so it’s currently available only for a small group of people who applied for the Beta program.

Anyway, the update is about 1.1GB in size and brings the Android 11 OS to the device. If you recall, the ROG Phone 3 launched in July 2020 with Android 10 OS out of the box. The UI on the device has ASUS’s ROG UI/ZenUI as an option.

Coming back, you can expect all the Android 11 features like chat bubbles, one-time permissions management, permission auto-reset, and more. That said, you can expect a lot of other changes that ASUS brings for its own UI to the table.

ASUS has been a bit off when it comes to updating its devices. Although it began registrations of the Android 11 Beta program for the ASUS Zenfone 6 way before the official Android 11 announcement, the company rolled out the stable update a bit late.

Add to this, ASUS also confirmed that the original ROG Phone won’t even get the 2019’s Android 10 OS. Either way, the Android 11 for ROG Phone 3 is its first major update so it’s a no-brainer that the device is getting the attention.

Speaking of which, currently, there is no info on when both the Open Beta and stable update rollout for this device will begin.

Nokia 3.2 Android 11 update rollout begins earlier than scheduled

HMD Global launched the Nokia 3.2 in early 2019 with Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. The smartphone was later updated to Android 10 last year. Now, it has even started receiving the much-awaited Android 11 update.

Nokia 3.2 Black Featured

Back in October 2020, HMD Global shared its Android 11 update plan for eligible devices. According to the schedule, the company is supposed to release the update for Nokia 3.2 in Q3 2021.

However, the firm has begun to roll out the update for this handset earlier. As per a Nokia Phones Community post (via NokiaPowerUser), the update is currently being pushed in batches.

The first wave includes the following 34 countries.

  • Albania
  • Azerbaijan
  • Bangladesh
  • Cambodia
  • Denmark
  • Egypt
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • Georgia
  • Hong Kong
  • Iceland
  • India
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Jordan
  • Laos
  • Latvia
  • Lebanon
  • Lithuania
  • Macau
  • Macedonia
  • Malaysia
  • Moldova
  • Montenegro
  • Nepal
  • Norway
  • Philippines
  • Serbia
  • Sri Lanka
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Thailand
  • Ukraine
  • Vietnam

Even in the above-mentioned regions, the update is only available for 10% of the users right now. But by March 26, 50% of users will have got the update, followed by 100% on March 28. In other words, users of Nokia 3.2 in these countries should get Android 11 via OTA update by the end of this month.

That said, HMD Global has not revealed when users in other nations will be getting the update. Anyway, though Android 11 is the last major software update for the Nokia 3.2, the smartphone should receive security updates for one more year.

OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro bring Hasselblad-branded cameras, faster charging, and a refreshed design

The OnePlus 9 series was announced today at a global event. The series includes the OnePlus 9, the OnePlus 9 Pro, and a third model called the OnePlus 9R. This post is for the first two. You can read about the OnePlus 9R here.

OnePlus 9 Series featured

OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro Design

OnePlus has adopted a new design for its new flagships. Gone is the vertically stacked cameras of the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 8 series and in its place is a left-positioned camera array similar to that of the OnePlus 8T. On both camera housings is the Hasselblad logo, proof of OnePlus’ partnership with the Swedish camera company.

Just like last year, the OnePlus 9 Pro comes with a curved display and it is covered in glass on both sides with an aluminum frame in the middle. The OnePlus 9, on the other hand, has a flat display and a fiberglass-reinforced polymer frame with a metal-like finish.

The OnePlus 9 Pro comes in Pine Green, Morning Mist, and Stellar Black which has a Sandstone-like appearance. The OnePlus 9 comes in Winter Mist, Arctic Sky which has a matte finish; and Astral Black which has a matte film under a glossy back.

OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro specs

The OnePlus 9 comes with a 6.55-inch FHD+ AMOLED display. The screen has a 120Hz refresh rate, an upgrade from the 90Hz of the OnePlus 8. The OnePlus 9 Pro not only has a bigger 6.7-inch display both it is also a QHD+ LTPO panel called Fluid Display 2.0 with a 120Hz variable refresh rate. The two displays have HDR10+ certification, so you can stream HDR content from supported platforms including Netflix.

Powering the two phones is a Snapdragon 888 processor and it comes with 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage for both devices.

The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 pro have dual SIM support, stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6, and run OxygenOS 11 based on Android 11 out of the box. they will get two OS upgrades (Android 12 and Android 13) and three years of security updates.

The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro both come with a 4500mAh battery capacity that supports Warp Charge 65T, an improved and faster version of Warp Charge 65 that was announced with the OnePlus 8T last year. The standard model supports 15W wireless charging (exclusive to Europe and North America), it is slower than the 30W wireless charging of the OnePlus 8 Pro but is better than nothing. The pro model supports a much faster 50W wireless charging called Warp Charge 50 Wireless.

OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro cameras

The cameras are one of the biggest upgrades for the new OnePlus flagships. OnePlus has partnered with Hasselblad to ensure users get the best camera performance on a OnePlus phone.

The OnePlus 9 Pro gets the best cameras as expected. Its main camera is a custom Soy IMX789 48MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and OIS. It is packed with Digital Overlap HDR (DOL-HDR), 2×2 on-chip lens (OCL), and dual ISO. The camera can shoot 12-bit RAW images which captures a lot more colors than a regular camera. It can also record in 4K at 120fps and in 8K at 30fps.

Along with the main camera is a Sony IMX766 ultrawide camera with a freeform lens that removes the distortion at the edges of ultrawide angle photos. It can also shoot 4CM macro photos. OnePlus doesn’t join the periscope camera trend but instead settles for an 8MP telephoto camera with OIS that brings 3.3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. There is also a 2MP monochrome camera that works with the main sensor so you can shoot in black and white.

There are a lot of camera features packed into the camera app. There is a Hasselblad Pro mode that has a similar interface as a Hasselblad camera. There is also a Nightscape video mode that allows you to record brighter and sharper videos in low-light.

For the OnePlus 9, you get a Sony IMX689 48MP primary camera with standard HDR. It gets dual-native ISO and can also shoot in 12-bit RAW. There is also no OIS and it can only shoot 4K videos at 60fps but can still record in 8K at 30fps.

Thankfully, the standard model gets the same 50MP ultrawide angle camera with a Freeform lens and support for 4CM macro photography. It also has a 2MP monochrome camera but no telephoto camera.

Both phones have a 16MP front-facing camera with an HDR mode.

Purported Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 chipset spotted on Geekbench

Early this month, Roland Quandt of WinFuture.de said that Qualcomm is working on a next-gen Snapdragon 8cx internally named SC8280 with an aim to take on the Apple M1 chip. Today, the third-gen chipset might have appeared on the Geekbench benchmarks.

A Geekbench 5 listing shows a benchmark of a device codenamed “Qualcomm QRD”. The device has a processor that is shown as  “Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3”. It is an octa-core chipset and has a base frequency of 2.69GHz.

This is in line with Roland’s report who said that the chipset would be clocked at 2.7GHz. That is, if this is the third-gen 8cx, then it would have 4xGold+ cores at 2.7GHz and 4xGold cores clocked at 2.43GHz.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3

Anyway, the listing shows that the device scores 982 on single-core and 4,918 on multi-core categories. According to the Notebookcheck report, these scores match only 56% of Apple M1 performance. While the overall performance has improved, it looks like Qualcomm still needs a lot of catching to do with Apple.

That said, this particular benchmark isn’t necessarily verified as the third-gen Snapdragon 8cx chipset although it has the identifier ‘ARMv8’ on it. And even if this is the one, the sample could be of a prototype so let’s wait for an official word on the performance data.

The upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx chipset is said to be used primarily in Windows notebooks including the 2-in-1 machines. It will probably have an integrated NPU to handle AI-based tasks with up to 15 TOP(Trillions of Operations) of performance.

All these are hinting towards a competitive iteration from Qualcomm and only time will tell if it will up the ante and play a tug of war with its rivals in 2021.
