IDC Q3 2020 Smart Speaker market ranking shows Tmall Genie is the No.1 product in China

The latest IDC listing on market activities has been released detailing China’s smart speaker shipments in Q3, 2020. In the third quarter, an estimated 8.29 million units of smart speakers were released, a year-on-year decline of around 14.7%. This reflects some of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic which slowed down market activity this year.Tmall Elf IN featured

According to the data released (via), the leading smart speaker manufacturer was Tmall Genie, with about 2.9 million units exported. The Aibaba group manufactured smart speaker brand accounted for 35% of the overall shipments in the third quarter of the year.

This news follows the earlier announcement by Alibaba group that the Tmall Elf speaker’s built-in AI assistant will be integrated into home appliances and more devices apart from its smart speakers. It is reported that the company presently has access to several hundreds of IoT platforms, spanning multiple categories, over 1,000 brands, with active support for more than 4,900 models, and AI assistants have made inroads into smart home devices and other appliances.

Several industry platforms like Aowei Cloud and Euromonitor, in their Q3 market report for 2020 also placed Tmall Genie shipments ahead of others in the Chinese smart speaker market.

Several analysts are of the view that China’s smart speaker equipment market has transited into a new phase – a period of adjustment, diversification, and a more robust business strategy, so as to garner more opportunities and expand to previously untapped segments of the market.

Ru Yi, general manager of Tmall Genie product and hardware Research and Development arm, said that with more than four years of tech accumulation and product iteration, the company’s AI capabilities had sufficiently improved, with its smart speakers a clear manifestation of its AI capabilities.

The company insists that it will continue to raise the bar in constantly improving the user experience of its smart devices.

Alibaba group says they are currently exporting AI capabilities to a wide and growing array of devices and processes including home appliances, home improvement, real estate, and others. It hopes to continue to strengthen the capabilities in entertainment, information, smart home, life services, children’s education, and health, by deploying its AI technology to the fullest.

Design

The best design is definitely the one of the OPPO Reno5 Pro+. The handset went in commerce in China with an amazing electrochromic rear side. It is the first commercial phone with a body able to change its color with a simple double tap. This makes the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ one of the most impressive handsets out there in terms of design. Right after, we got the OPPO Reno5 Pro boasting the same design as the Reno5 Pro+, but without an electrochromic back. The Reno5 looks uglier because it has a flat display, but several users prefer a flat screen over a curved one.

Display

The displays of OPPO Reno5, Reno5 Pro, and Reno5 Pro+ come with similar specifications. The OPPO Reno5 Pro+ has a slightly better panel with higher brightness, but we do not recommend to choose the handset by basing on the display quality only. You would better focus on the rest of the specs sheet, where you will find more important differences. OPPO Reno5 has a flat display, while OPPO Reno5 Pro and Pro+ boast curved screens at the sides. In each case, you get an in-display fingerprint reader.

Specs & Software

The most important differences between these three handsets lay in the hardware department. The OPPO Reno5 is an upper-midrange phone as it is powered by the Snapdragon 765G mobile platform. The OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is a flagship as it boasts a Dimensity 1000+ that is actually the best MediaTek chipset. The OPPO Reno5 Pro+ is a top-tier flagship fueled by the Snapdragon 865 mobile platform. All the phones are based on Android 11, customized by the ColorOS 11. Naturally, the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ is the winner of the hardware comparison. The software is the same on each phone.

Camera

OPPO Reno5 and Reno5 Pro 5G share the same midrange-class camera department. They come with a 64 MP main sensor, an 8 MP ultrawide lens, and a pair of 2 MP sensors for macros and depth calculation. On the other hand, OPPO Reno5 Pro+ is a real flagship camera phone: it is the first with the amazing 50 MP Sony IMX766 sensor, it has OIS, a 13 MP telephoto sensor, a 16 MP ultrawide lens, and a 2 MP dedicated macro camera. All of these phones feature a 32 MP front camera for selfies.

Battery

Besides having a better camera department, the OPPO Reno5 Pro+ has the biggest battery. With its 4500 mAh capacity, it is able to last more than OPPO Reno5 and Reno5 Pro 5G on a single charge. But the difference is not huge compared to the other variants. With the OPPO Reno5 and Reno5 Pro, you still get good 4300 and 4350 mAh batteries. Each phone supports 65W fast charging technology (SuperVOOC 2.0).

Price

The starting price of the OPPO Reno5 in China is about €340/$415, OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G starts from €430/$525, and OPPO Reno5 Pro+ 5G begins at €565/$690. OPPO Reno5 Pro+ is obviously the best, it is a way better phone thanks to its hardware and amazing camera department. But it will probably remain a China-exclusive. The OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G offers the best quality-price ratio.

Xiaomi Mi 11 confirmed to featured Corning Gorilla Glass Victus with 2x scratch resistance

Xiaomi has been officially confirming several features of the upcoming Mi 11 through a bunch of teasers on Weibo. Today, the company has confirmed yet another feature, and this time, it concerns the durability of the display.

Xiaomi Mi 11

Earlier this month, Huawei began EMUI 11 Beta program for the 2019’s P-flagship, P30/P30 Pro devices. Today, the company has extended the program to 14 other devices all of them powered by the same SoC.

HUAWEI EMUI 11 Logo Featured

As MyDriver reports, Huawei has announced Open Beta for various Huawei and Honor older flagships and tablets. The program brings EMUI 11 based on Android 10 to the Huawei and Magic UI 4.0 for Honor devices. You can take a look at the list below:

Huawei Devices

  • HUAWEI Mate 20
  • HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro
  • PORSCHE DESIGN HUAWEI Mate20 RS

It’s worth noting that the devices above have already got the closed Beta of the EMUI 11 and Magic UI 4.0 respectively. Interestingly, they are powered by Huawei’s Kirin 980 SoC that is two years old.

Despite being a very old CPU, it is built on the 7nm process which still other companies use on their chipsets. And it is the world’s first 7nm chipset with dedicated NPUs(Neural Processing Unit). Besides, it is good to see Huawei updating older chipsets despite missing Android 11 features and Google Mobile Services due to the US ban.

Anyway, the current Beta is for the Chinese market and as usual, users will have to go to the Huawei Club to sign up for it. Precisely, you can follow the steps below to get the latest update:

  • on Huawei Club(App)
    • Open Huawei Club App -> Forum -> right corner ->㗊 ->EMUI Area ->Beta Program.
  • using a PC,
    • Huawei Club website->section->EMUI->Beta program

Having said that, the devices above which launched Globally will get the update by Q1 of 2021 according to the company’s timeline. Assuming the stable update rolls for the public beta users by next month in China, global users expect it to arrive soon after that.

However, there is no definite date yet and we suggest you wait for the company to state it officially. Meanwhile, you can look at the latest features of the EMUI 11 that was announced back at HDC 2020 in September.

Alleged Mi 11 box packaging leaked; could skip charger inside the box

Xiaomi Mi 11 is one of the most anticipated devices of 2021. Although the year isn’t born, the device is already confirmed to launch on the New Year Celebration week. Amidst a flurry of leaks, a leak now suggests that Xiaomi could follow the footsteps of Apple and remove in-box adapter.

Xiaomi Mi 11

Tipster Digital Chat Station has posted a leak on Weibo showcasing two box packaging. One of them is the iPhone which should belong to the recently launched iPhone 12 series. However, the other one has “Xiaomi 11” written on it.

This is a bit skeptical as the box doesn’t have the ‘Mi‘ prefix on it like the predecessors. Anyway, the tipster says that the box of Xiaomi’s 2021 flagship is as thin as the iPhone’s packaging. He also hints that the box could be void of an in-box adapter.

While replying to a user in the comments, he specifically says that there won’t be a charger in the box. Assuming we already know about the iPhone 12s, he should be talking about the Mi 11 here. If we recall, Xiaomi, along with giants like Samsung poked fun at Apple for removing the Charging Adapter from the box.

However, the latest reports hint that the former is already prepared to remove it from the box on its upcoming Galaxy S21. If today’s leak is true, Xiaomi would also join the bandwagon but let’s wait for the official news. In any case, this trend is a bit concerning as the Android manufacturers’ charging tech is way ahead of Apple’s counterpart.

And if they start excluding it from the box, people might have to pay them separately like iOS users. In the past, companies have followed Apple‘s trend ever so slightly despite mocking at them first. Some of them include a notch display trend, exclusion of earphones from the box, and more.

New leak reveals display specs of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, and Z Flip Lite

Just as the world celebrates Christmas today, tipster Ross Young of DSCC has given us a present of leaks regarding Samsung’s 2021 foldables. According to him, the third-gen Galaxy Z Fold will have a smaller display than the predecessor but the Z Flip 3 will grow slightly bigger.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Mystic Bronze Front Rear
Representative image: Galaxy Z Fold2

Precisely, he says(via GSMArena) the Galaxy Z Fold 3‘s main display(Inner Display) will get smaller than 7.59-inch on the Z Fold2. Accordingly, Samsung will go ahead with a 7.55-inch main display and also shrink the cover display to 6.21-inches. He adds that the resolution of main display would be around 2208×1768 pixels with 5:4 aspect ratio and 375 PPI.

Previously, the Galaxy Z Fold2 that got announced back in August has a 6.23-inch Cover display. Ross says that a smaller size on the front is to accommodate the S-Pen inside the chassis. If we recall, a previous patent indicated that Samsung will finally introduce the stylus on Foldable devices.

With this, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will reportedly be the first foldable with a UTG display to use a Stylus. If you recall, Lenovo already has a similar device with stylus support Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold but it uses a CPI screen. To quickly brush you up, CPI(Colorless Polyimide) is a Plastic film but UTG(Ultra-Thin Glass) is stronger. Anyway, the Z Fold 3 is likely to sport an improved UTG display with AES digitizer support and an under-display camera.

That said, Ross also opens the possibility of a “W22” foldable which according to him would be like a Z Fold3 Ultra and will be limited in quantities. Next, we have leaks on the next clamshell devices as well. Both the Z Flip3, Z Flip Lite will get a bigger 6.70-inch display. This is a 0.03-inches up from the predecessor. Also, the cover display is 1.81-inches on the Z Flip 3 so far.

Among this, the Z Flip 3 will feature an LTPO display with a 120Hz refresh rate. That’s it for now and we will have to wait for more details in the future. In any case, Samsung is expected to launch 4 foldable devices next year across different price points.

New Tip says Samsung Galaxy S21 series’ pre-orders could be for a ‘shorter’ time than before

If there’s one 2021 device that has leaked well ahead of launch, it is definitely the Samsung’s Galaxy S21. In fact, almost all the info regarding the entire series of 3 devices is out in the open. Now, a fresh report says Samsung will hold a teeny-weeny pre-order window for the devices in its home country.

Galaxy S21 Series Renders 01

The Galaxy S21 series comprising of Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra 5G devices will be open for pre-orders from January 15th as per the new info. If what the Twitter user(via Sammobile) says is true, this is going to be the situation in Korea.

He also says that the pre-orders will run through to January 21 which is a span of just about 6 days. In the past, Samsung has had at least a two-week window for the predecessors(Galaxy S20 series). That said, the disparity between regions this time is baffling as the devices are already up for blind orders in India.

Of course, there is also the possibility of Samsung testing the waters to get the pulse of the audience in bigger countries like India, China. 2020 has been a bit of a rollercoaster for the world and not everyone would be willing to spend such premium pricing(leak) for a smartphone. One other reason could be enough stocks which the company had planned well in advance so that it feels a week for pre-orders is enough.

Anyway, the Korea release date(January 29), as mentioned by the user, corroborates with the early report. Samsung has mostly maintained at least a unanimous launch date of devices across regions. And we can expect the same to repeat this time as well.

Nevertheless, the announcement(January 14) is reportedly just a few weeks away granted Samsung doesn’t jump the gun here. The company has already confirmed that it is bringing new display technology on January 6 and a new Exynos chipset on January 12.

Xiaomi Mi 11 real images appear to reveal design and key specs

The Xiaomi Mi 11 phone will go official on Dec. 28. It is set to arrive as the world’s first smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 888 mobile platform. Xiaomi is yet to reveal the design of the Mi 11. Two live shots of the Xiaomi Mi 11 smartphone have appeared on Weibo to reveal its appearance from the front and rear.

The rear shot of the Xiaomi Mi 11 reveals the presence of a square-shaped camera hosing that includes a triple camera setup and an LED flash. As it is mentioned in the camera housing, it is equipped with a 108-megapixel main camera. The company has revealed that the Mi 11 will come with computational photography technology for capturing better shots.

Xioami Mi 11 live shots

A careful look at the rear panel shows suggests that it could be featuring a leather back. A recent leak that mentioned the different variants and color editions of the Mi 11 had revealed that it will come in a leather back option. The volume controller and power button can be seen on the right spine of the device.

The second image shows the front view of the Xiaomi Mi 11. The top part of the screen is not visible. However, recent reports have revealed that the Mi 11 has a punch-hole display with a four-sided curved design. According to Xiaomi, the Mi 1 is equipped with a very advanced display. Rumors are rife that it will carry support for up to 120Hz refresh rate and quad HD+ resolution.

The specs mentioned on the screen states that it is powered by a 2.84GHz octa-core processor, which is the Snapdragon 888 5G mobile platform. The SoC is coupled with 12 GB of RAM. The device is loaded with Android 11 OS and MUI 12 skin. Shown above is a render of the Mi 11 that is now doing rounds on social platforms.

Corning in final development stage for foldable phone cover glass

Corning has reached the final stage of development for its cover glass for foldable smartphones. The US based company made the announcement earlier this week, making the company an upcoming supplier of Samsung’s foldable smartphones.

Corning

According to TheElec report, Corning launching its own glass cover for foldable handsets will raise the competition with German based Schott to supply them to Samsung. As per a Corning spokesperson, the company is currently at the final stage of the development of foldable glass cover solutions, with mass production and commercialization to begin in 2021.

Back in September 2020, the company had said that it was testing samples and that they planned to launch the cover glass officially within the next 12 months. At the moment, Schott has been the sole supplier of the substrate glass used in the ultra thin glass cover made by Samsung Electronics for its foldable smartphones. For the foldable OLED panel itself, however, Samsung Display‘s subsidiary processes Corning’s glass.

Corning

The launch of the cover glass from Corning will also lead to rising competition between Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display over processing the cover glass. At the moment, Samsung Display has signed a three year exclusive purchasing deal with Schott for their glass substrates. However, Samsung Electronics believes that the exclusive contract will limit the chance to reduce unit prices of foldable display panes and is planning to build its own supply chain by procuring glass substrates made by Corning.

Huawei to launch a Nova 8 Pro Honor of Kings Special Edition: Report

Huawei had just recently launched two new smartphones at a conference, namely the Nova 8 and the Nova 8 Pro. However, it seems like the company refrained from unveiling a special edition of the device, which features the theme of the popular mobile game Honor of Kings.

According to a recent Weibo post by blogger @看山的叔叔, a Chinese microblogging website, the company will soon launch a Huawei Nova 8 Pro Honor of Kings limited edition variant. For those unaware, Honor of Kings is an online multiplayer video game title for smartphones. It is an online battle arena developed by TiMi Studios and published by Tencent Games for both the iOS and Android platforms. At the moment, the game is one of the most popular titles in the world, especially in China.

So, it does not come as a surprise that China’s largest smartphone brand would launch a special edition based on the game. Although this news is still unconfirmed right now, so take the report with a pinch of salt for now. The Chinese tech giant is known for launching special editions of its popular smartphones so we might see an Honor of Kings variant as well.

Huawei Nova 8 and Nova 8 Pro launched

While the aesthetic and design of the Nova 8 Pro Honor of Kings version could be unique, its specifications are likely to be the same. This includes the HiSilicon Kirin 985 5G mobile processor, a 6.72 inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and more. Furthermore, the device would likely arrive with optimizations to make the game run at 90fps. Unfortunately, the pricing and availability of the device are still unknown, so stay tuned for more updates.

Shortages of Laptops and PCs caused by high demand to last till 2022

As the world got hit with the viral outbreak earlier this year, the demand for various electronic products like laptops and desktop PCs rose immensely. This apparently has left manufacturers still being months away to fulfill existing orders with the shortge possibly lasting till 2022, as per analysts and hardware industry executives.

According to a Reuters report, one of the primary reasons for this sudden rise in demand was caused by the growing remote working or work from home requirements in the professional sense; whilst education was also shifted to the online digital realms due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The outbreak saw smartphone sales decline while devices with larger displays saw an increase in popularity and demand.

Laptops

Gregg Prendergast, Pan-America president at hardware maker Acer Inc stated that “The whole supply chain has been strained like never before.” Furthermore, the annual shipments of PCs, including desktops and laptops, had topped out at about 300 million in 2008 and has since been on a steady decline, with only a few predicting such a resurgence in demand. At the moment, projections from analysts note that shipments in 2020 could reach around 300 million as well, which would be up by 15 percent over last year.

Another large screen gadget that has seen impressive sales are tablets. The report also adds that the number of installed tablets and PCs will reach about 1.77 billion. This is up from 1.64 billion in 2019. With various government enforcing local lockdowns, many families had looked to install at least one PC, for children and students in their homes. Notably, even the gaming industry grew as the number of gamers and related hardware also saw growth.

Laptops

At the moment, many companies and manufacturers are struggling to stock up inventory to keep up with the high demand. A few brands had teased better models and supply through improved shipping, although, whether or not this is true remains to be seen. So stay tuned for more updates regarding the matter.

Xiaomi to launch foldable phone soon in 2021, Three kinds of foldables expected

At present, there are only a few mainstream brands such as Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola that are selling foldable smartphones in the market. While Motorola is only foldable phones in a clamshell design, Samsung is offering foldable smartphones in in-folding and clamshell designs. Display analyst Ross Young had claimed earlier this month that companies like OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi will together launch four foldable phones in 2021. He had also claimed that Google will also launch a foldable phone in the coming year. Through a fresh tweet, Young has revealed that Xiaomi will launch three kinds of foldable phones.

Young claimed that the next foldable phone to arrive in the market could be from Xiaomi. The Chinese manufacturer has reportedly planned three 3 foldable phones with different designs for 2021. Hence, the brand is expected to unveil foldable phones with designs such as out-folding, an in-folding, and a clamshell.

He added that the out-folding foldable phone from Xiaomi will be like the Huawei Mate X. Hence, it could be a larger device than the company’s in-folding device. Three is a possibility that the out-folding device may feature a display of around 8 inches.

In October, it was revealed by XDA Developers that it could find evidence of a Xiaomi foldable codenamed “Cetus” in the MIUI 12 beta. It was found that the device is equipped with a Snapdragon chipset and a 108-megapixel camera. Other details of the “Cetus” device is currently under wraps. It seems to be one of the upcoming foldable phones that Xiaomi may launch next year.

This year, Xiaomi filed multiple patents for foldable phones with different designs. Hopefully, some of those designs could be seen in the company’s foldable phones that are expected to debut in 2021.
