Rumor: OPPO Reno5 Pro and Reno5 Pro Plus will be powered by the Snapdragon 860

The OPPO Reno series is already in its fourth generation even though it is just a year old. By the next quarter, we expect OPPO will announce the Reno5 series as details have begun surfacing. Today, a leak revealed the names of the phones in the series and their respective processors, one of which is a chipset that is yet to launch but that we have heard of before.

The source of the leaker is Really Asen Jun, and according to him, there will be three Reno5 phones. They are the Reno5, Reno5 Pro, and Reno5 Pro+. Knowing OPPO, these phones may launch under a different name in other markets. The leaker goes on to reveal the chipsets that are expected to power the three phones.

OPPO Reno5 series

The Reno5 will be powered by the yet-to-be-announced Snapdragon 775G. This chipset was expected to be announced in June but it still has not been announced. The Snapdragon 775G should bring new features and a higher processing power than the Snapdragon 765G which has turned out to be the go-to chipset for several manufacturers launching mid-range 5G phones.

The Reno5 Pro and Reno5 Pro+ will both feature the Snapdragon 860 Mobile Platform, another processor that is yet-to-be-announced. News of the Snapdragon 860 first surfaced earlier this month, and even then, it was linked to OPPO.

While we know little about these processors, we are pretty sure they will have 5G modems. While OPPO did release 4G variants of the Reno4, we do not think it will do the same for the Reno5 series.

Samsung is working on a budget foldable with model number SM-F415

Samsung is the only company to sell foldable smartphones on a large scale. The South Korean tech giant has so far launched four foldable devices under its Galaxy Z series; they are Galaxy Fold, Galaxy Fold 5G, Galaxy Z Flip, and Galaxy Z Flip 5G. The fourth and fifth devices – Galaxy Z Fold2 and Galaxy Z Fold2 5G are expected to launch next month. But none of them is affordable. Hence, to lure more customers, the firm is working on a budget foldable smartphone.

Samsung Logo Blue Featured

It is not the first time we are hearing about an affordable foldable handset from Samsung. In late June, a report claimed the chaebol to have postponed the launch of this phone to next year – 2021. The exact marketing name of this product is a mystery.

But now, an exclusive leak by SamMobile reveals this smartphone to carry model number SM-F415. For those unaware, Samsung uses SM-Fxxx for its Galaxy Z series phones. Also, the leak claims this handset to come in 64GB and 128GB storage configurations.

Unfortunately, that’s the only information the publication has managed to procure so far. It is not known how cheap it will be compared to the current-gen foldables from the company. To lower the price,  it may come with a mid-range processor and inferior cameras.

Anyway, it is a good sign for the commercialization of foldables. Soon, we may find this form factor in every price segment in no time if it all goes fine like the smartphone revolution.

Redmi 9 (India) renders and specs leak ahead of August 27 launch

Yesterday, Xiaomi teased the launch of next Redmi 9 series smartphone in India. Earlier today, the company officially revealed the upcoming phone will be called Redmi 9 and it will be debuting on August 27. A few hours later, the renders and entire specifications of this handset leak except for its price.

Redmi 9 India Renders Leak Featured

The original Redmi 9 (aka Redmi 10X 4G in China) launched as Redmi 9 Prime in India on August 4. Now, the company has scheduled an event for August 27 in the country to announce Redmi 9 as a tweaked version of Redmi 9C.

The only difference between Redmi 9 (India) and Redmi 9C (Global) will be dual-camera setup on the former compared to triple on the latter. For those unaware, POCO M2 Pro follows a similar principle. It shares everything with Redmi Note 9S but with different rear pattern and faster-charging support.

According to the leak,  the Redmi 9 launching in India next week will be powered by MediaTek Helio G35 chipset paired with 2GB/3GB RAM and 32GB/64GB internal storage. It will sport a 6.53-inch HD+ (1600 x 720 pixels) LCD screen with a dew-drop notch nesting a 5MP selfie camera.

The textured plastic back of the phone will house a square module at the top left corner with a 13MP (wide) + 2MP (depth) dual camera, an LED flash, and an empty circle in which the original Redmi 9C houses a 5MP ultra-wide camera. The rear panel will also include a fingerprint sensor.

Unlike Redmi 9 Prime, the Redmi 9 will launch with MIUI 12 based on Android 10 out of the box. Further, it will come in three colors – Black/Blue/Orange with 3.5mm headphone jack, dedicated microSD card slot,  MicroUSB port compared to USB Type-C on its predecessor Redmi 8, and a 5,000mAh battery with support for 10W charging.

So why India is getting a tweaked Redmi 9C? That’s because the original is said to launch as POCO C3 in the country.

MediaTek conducts world’s first 5G Satellite IoT Data Connection Test

MediaTek, the known chipmaker, has conducted the world’s first public test of advanced IoT 5G satellite communications. The test was undertaken through Inmarsat’s Alphasat L-band satellite, with the trial being successful, according to a PR Newswire report.

MediaTek Dimensity 5G Chipset Featured

The test had data transferred to the satellite Geostationary Orbit (GEO) 35,000 kilometers above the equator. Furthermore, the results obtained from these tests will contribute to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)’s Rel-17 standardization work on Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN). In simpler terms, it is a broader advancement of 5G networking coverage, which will grow to soon include more services and technology.

In the test, a bi-directional link between the 5G satellite NB-IoT technology and MediaTek’s satellite was established. This broke new grounds for a truly global IoT coverage. Meaning, this is a very important step that builds on the foundation for a hybrid satellite and cellular networks that has huge applications in 5G IoT related services on a global scale.

Mediatek logo

According to Dr. Ho-Chi Hwang, MediaTek General Manager of Communication System Design, “MediaTek’s collaboration with Inmarsat will accelerate industry efforts to converge cellular and satellite networks in the 5G era. MediaTek is a leading connectivity provider and contributor to 3GPP standards, and our ongoing work with Inmarsat GEO satellites will help drive 5G innovation across verticals like IoT.”

Apple is being investigated by USITC over patent dispute

Earlier this week, the United States International Trade Commission announced that it is launching an investigation regarding an alleged infringement of Maxwell patents by Apple products. Despite hitting a 2 trillion US Dollar in market value, the company is still facing various lawsuits and allegations.

For those unaware, Maxwell is a Japanese company that makes consumer electronics products. It had filed a lawsuit against the Cupertino based giant earlier this year and even filed a complaint with the ITC. Maxwell sought for ITC to issue an exclusion order along with a cease and desist order as well. This would essentially prohibit Apple from importing devices that carry infringed technology into the US.

Apple Product Lineup

The ITC has since responded to the complaint and announced that it will be starting an investigation to find out if Apple products do infringe on the Japanese company’s patents and intellectual properties. According to a notice published by the ITC, ” “mobile devices, tablets, smartwatches, and laptop computers sold under the Apple brand name” will also fall under the investigation, which will test over 10 separate patent infringement claims from Maxwell.

Apple and Google may face trouble as startups seek probe on their in-app purchase system

A new report from the Korean Herald has revealed that various startups from South Korea are banding together to call for an investigation against Apple and Google. The probe would be for both tech giants’ in app purchase systems.

The group between the various developers and small scale companies have submitted a petition to the Korea Communications Commission earlier this week. In the petition, the group sought an investigation against both Apple and Google, which may be violating South Korean laws regarding in-app purchases and anti-competitive behavior. They said that Apple has been forcing developers to use their proprietary in app purchase structure since 2011.

This payment structure has Apple take a 30 percent cut off the total expenditure as commission. Similarly, Google demands the same from gaming application, requiring them to use its own in app purchase system for games on its platform. According to Choi Sung-jin, President of the Korea Startup Forum, “While the 30 percent commission rate is too high in itself, it is more problematic that they force a specific payment system for the app markets.”

Google

Sung-jin further added that unlike larger developers, the small scale or newer startups have fewer opportunities to negotiate the terms with either Apple or Google. Furthermore, they fear that an attempted negotiation might lead to a hike in commissions for the in app purchases done by the customer. In 2019, both known brands account for 87.8 percent of the total South Korean app market. Notably, this arrives just after Epic sued both companies for anti competitive practices regarding their respective app stores for very similar reasons.

Similarly, other items included a balloon, a feather, and even a 1000 grams weight. All of which were heavier than the laptop which according to Lenovo, weighs just 999 grams. This would make it very easy to carry around and use on the go.

Lenovo

The laptop is expected to arrive with a 13.3 inch 2K pOLED display, with a 4:3 aspect ratio. It is built on lightweight alloys and carbon fiber and sports an Intel processor along with integrated UHD graphics as well. Patent reveals watch faces of upcoming vivo smartwatch

Late last year, Xiaomi launched its first-ever proper smartwatch. Soon, OPPO followed suit with its product earlier this year. The former is still limited to China but the latter has made its way to global markets. According to certifications, vivo will be the next Chinese smartphone maker to join this bandwagon. A UI patent by the company now reveals the watch faces of the brand’s first smartwatch.

Vivo Smartwatch Watch Face 02

Just like most patents, this one was also first spotted by LetsGoDigital. Vivo filed this patent in April and it got published by CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) on August 7.

Vivo patented only two watch faces. The first one has blue and green circles with vivo logo at the centre. As per the description in the document, the circles will change according to the user’s goal progress. In other words, it is a knock-off of Apple Watch’s Rings.

On the other hand, the second watch face has an analog clock with vital details like date, step count and two more things which could not understand.

Vivo Smartwatch Watch Face 01

Having said, these watch faces confirm the upcoming vivo smartwatch to feature a circular design unlike Xiaomi Mi Watch and OPPO Watch. This wearable even passed through 3C and Bluetooth SIG recently. Hence, we can expect Vivo to launch it anytime soon in the coming weeks.
