Huawei buys full-page ads in UK newspapers to push back as Government reviews its 5G role

Huawei has bought various full page advertisements in popular newspapers in the UK, which seems to be an effort to fight against the government’s fears regarding its involvement in 5G network deployment.

For those unaware, the UK had initially granted Huawei access to develop 5G in non-core areas along with a strict market share cap. However, a few conservatives within the Parliament have raised concerns against the Chinese tech giant and have forced the Prime Minister to review the involvement of Huawei altogether. Thus, the company has bought various full page ads to advocate for its position.

Huawei

In the ads, Huawei shared that, “For nearly 20 years, we’ve supplied the U.K.’s mobile and broadband companies with 3G and 4G, But some now question our role in helping Britain lead the way in 5G.” This was seen in Britain’s national newspapers, like The Guardian, Daily Telegraph, Times, Mirror, Sun, and Daily Mai. A few regional newspapers have also featured this ad.

According to their respective websites, this would’ve cost Huawei £18,000 (roughly $23,000) for a full page advertisement in The Guardian, and £46,000 (roughly $58,000) for Daily Telegraph. Furthermore, the company has also extended this social campaign towards business publications, digital platforms, and newsletters as well.

Earlier this year, the UK Government had labeled Huawei as a “high risk vendor.” However, it later allowed for its participation with a 35% market cap. Although now, the country seems to be moving ahead to replace all existing and planned telecom equipment provided by the Chinese company. With a complete replacement being impossible by 2023, but the prohibition of new purchases and installations starting the same year.

OPPO confirms it will work with key suppliers for its independent smartphone chip

Oppo has just confirmed that it will be developing its own custom made mobile processors for its smartphones. The Chinese tech giant will be working with key suppliers for this endeavor and has already begun its efforts in the field.

Oppo

According to Liu Bo, President of Oppo’s China business, “We have to tackle the chip technology and make the technology the crucial driving force for our future growth.” The senior executive revealed this information after rumors had been going around for weeks, while also mentioning the numerous challenges the company would face. Liu even mentioned that the company will start by working with key suppliers to design and develop its own smartphone chipsets.

At the moment, Oppo’s primary partners and chip suppliers include the US chip giant, Qualcomm, Taiwan based MediaTek, and South Korea’s Samsung. The chips from these companies can be found in Oppo handsets, although, the further news regarding its plans on developing its chip system has yet to be divulged. The new custom made chips will also help differentiate the company’s products over other companies that utilize more readily available chips in the market.

Notably, the company has been hiring chip engineers and other high level executives from top chipmakers like Qualcomm, MediaTek, and more since 2019. This is indicative of its plans on proprietary chip technology. Interestingly, this news arrives mere weeks after its rival, Huawei lost its chip supply from TSMC due to recent US sanctions. So we can assume that the event kickstarted the race for custom made chips even more for Oppo, so as to avoid complications like this later on.

OPPO VP: Don’t be too Excited about Under Screen cameras this year

Back in 2019, the world had caught another glimpse of the future generation of smartphones after the foldable devices. These were smartphones with a camera hidden beneath the display. Despite being seen nearly a year ago, no smartphones have featured this technology yet and OPPO‘s VP has revealed that the technology will probably not be seen in 2020 at all.

Oppo

According to Brian Shen, the Vice President of OPPO, people shouldn’t put high expectations of the technology at the moment. The primary reason for this is the image quality. Unlike regular selfie cameras, the under screen sensors will struggle with high resolution image quality. The senior executive stated that the technology is quite complicated and it will take some time to perfect. OPPO had previously teased the technology through a prototype, as did Xiaomi through a video teaser.

Furthermore, the technology may also be expensive and could only be sported on high end flagship models. But since the image quality is taking a noticeable hit, companies will likely not opt for this technology for now. According to Shen, the process of achieving the desired result from the under screen camera is a long and difficult one. Although, a commercial appearance may just arrive soon after 2020.

Oppo Under-Display Camera

Currently, various smartphone brands have had their R&D departments try and develop a viable under screen camera setup. While a few have unveiled their prototypes, none of them have been mass produced or sold commercially. So stay tuned, as we will be covering any developments regarding this highly anticipated smartphone camera technology.

TSMC confident in replacing Huawei orders through other customers after US sanctions

TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) is currently working towards building a new chip plant in Arizona, US. While the world’s largest contract chipmaker is investing heavily in the region, it is confident that the rest of its customers would fill in any losses in orders or revenue after losing Huawei due to the recent US sanctions.

At the moment, TSMC is still supplying Huawei for its previously placed orders. However, the company is confident that the rest of its major customers like Apple, will step up later on. Furthermore, TSMC is also studying the latest restrictions that are facing by the US and hope that the situation resolves soon. Despite the rocky start with Coronavirus pandemic and US regulations, the company is still going ahead with its planned expansion.

The semiconductor giant is still planning on spending as high as $16 billion on capacity upgrades and technology in 2020. Notably, the new plant being opened in Arizona despite higher costs will also involve a sizeable investment of $12 billion. The US government has agreed on various incentives to have the foreign chipmaker to create jobs and produce sensitive components domestically.

TSMC

In other words, the risk involved in having electronics made outside of the US would be lower, which will also make monitoring the technology easier as well. Huawei has always been one of TSMC’s largest customers. The company would stand to lose a noticeable chunk of its revenue and orders due to the restrictions. But, other customers and now, even local orders within the US might help cushion the blow.

TCL’s new Android Smart TVs start at just $129

TCL is one of the biggest smart TV brands in North America, but unlike a lot of manufacturers that ship their TVs with Android TV, TCL ships its products with Roku TV pre-installed. The manufacturer has now announced two new smart TVs that come with Android TV, its first for the American market.  They are also pretty affordable with the base model going for just $129.

TCL 32” Class 3-Series

The first of the TVs is the TCL 32” Class 3-Series which has a 31.5-inch 720p LED screen. There is no HDR which isn’t surprising considering its price. The TV has two HDMI ports with one of them having support for HDMI ARC. For connectivity, you get 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a single USB 2.0 port, and an Ethernet port.

TCL says it has Dolby Digital surround sound and has included a built-in 10W speaker which should be fine if you want to use it in a small room. But you may need to pick up a soundbar for better sound.

TCL 40'' Class 3-Series

TCL 40” Class 3-Series

You can already tell that this is a bigger model from its name. The LED screen measures 39.5-inches and has a 1080p resolution. It also comes with a more powerful 16W speaker along with Dolby Digital Plus surround sound. You get the same number of HDMI and USB ports as the 32” model and also the same connectivity options.

TCL 32'' Class 3-Series remote

Just like the 32” model, this also has a voice remote with a dedicated Google Assistant button in addition to Netflix and YouTube shortcut keys.

TCL has put a price tag of $199.99 on this model and you can pick it up along with the 32-inch version on Best Buy.

There is no news of the TVs launching in other markets here but we won’t rule out the possibility of that happening.

OnePlus teases starting price of the upcoming smart TV lineup in India

Recently, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed that the company will be launching a new Smart TV in the Indian market on 2nd July. It was also confirmed that that time, the devices will be priced affordably.

Now, the OnePlus India twitter handle has teased the pricing of the upcoming Smart TV in the country. It has teased that the starting price of the new TV will be ₹1X,999. So, it could be priced between ₹10,999 to ₹19,999 which is $146 and $265.

OnePlus Smart TV Pricing Teased

The company is expected to launch two new smart TV series in the Indian market — one in the budget segment and another in the mid-range segment. As per the reports, the budget series could be priced around ₹15,000, which is about $199.

On the other hand, the report claims that the budget lineup will have more than one device and the pricing will be between ₹20,000 and ₹40,000, which roughly converts to somewhere between $265 and $530.

The development comes just weeks after a new 55-inch OnePlus TV carrying model number 55UA0A00 and an RC-003A remote control was spotted at the Bluetooth SIG certification platform. The device is rumored to come equipped with a MediaTek chipset.

OnePlus had forayed into the Smart TV segment with the launch of OnePlus TV Q1 / Q1 Pro in the Indian market after the company had revealed the plan in 2018. At the time, it was revealed that this division will be headed by the company’s CEO Pete Lau.

Although both the TV models were made available for purchase in India, it’s hard to assume that it managed to sell significant units, given the pricing. The standard model was priced at ₹69,900 ($926) while the Pro model was priced at ₹99,900 ($1,323).

But now, OnepLus seems to be ready to ditch the premium segment, at least for now, and focus on the sales for the OnePlus TV. Thus, we’ll be seeing affordable offerings from the company next month, competing against the likes of Xiaomi’s Mi TV and Realme Smart TV.

OnePlus Z may debut as OnePlus Nord on July 10

In December 2019, it was revealed that apart from the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro flagship phones, OnePlus is working on a 5G-ready upper mid-range phone. Early rumors referred to it as OnePlus 8 Lite. In March, it was reported that the handset could be arriving in the market as OnePlus Z. In late March, the Chinese firm filed a trademark application for “Nord by OnePlus” moniker. Popular tipster Max J shared an image of a four-letter word starting with N. The image has given birth to the news that the upcoming mid-range OnePlus smartphone could be called OnePlus Nord.

Max J who seems to know more about the device was first to reveal that it is powered by the Snapdragon 765 mobile platform. In the Twitter conversation which hints the Nord moniker, he said that he does not know the OnePlus Z. Probably, he is again hinting that the device won’t be called OnePlus Z.

Yesterday, Android Central carried an exclusive report to reveal that it came to know through a source within OnePlus that the mid-range OnePlus phone will be announced on July 10 in India. Since OnePlus had to push back the launch event of the OnePlus 8 series twice, it is advisable to wait for OnePlus to release an official confirmation on the launch date for the OnePlus Nord smartphone.

A leaked survey that was spotted yesterday revealed that the forthcoming Snapdragon 765 SoC powered OnePlus phone will cost Rs. 24,990 (~$330) in India. The handset will come with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of native storage.

OnePlus 8 Lite

The survey further revealed that the device is equipped with a 6.5-inch S-AMOLED punch-hole display with 90Hz refresh rate support. The screen is embedded with a fingerprint reader. The device is packed with a 4,300mAh battery that supports 30W fast charging. HTC confirms June 16 unveil event; Launch poster teases Desire 20 Pro

Recent reports have revealed HTC is planning to launch the Desire 20 Pro smartphone in Taiwan. The smartphone had received approval from the National Communications Commission (NCC) in Taiwan. Yesterday, it was certified by the Bluetooth SIG and Wi-Fi Alliance authorities. The key specs of the phone had surfaced through its appearance at Google Play Console and Geekbench. The Taiwanese company has sent out media invites for a launch event that will be held on June 16 in Taiwan. The smartphone teased in the launch poster resembles with the upcoming Desire 20 Pro. Hence, it appears that the Desire 20 series of midrange smartphones will go official on June 16.

HTC June 16 launch even-

The silhouette of the smartphone shown in the launch poster suggests that it is equipped with a punch-hole display and an elongated camera module on its back. The design seems to match with the schematics of the Desire 20 Pro that appeared in April. The Desire 20 Pro will be HTC’s phone to feature a punch-hole screen and it will also be the first smartphone from the brand to arrive with Android 10 OS preinstalled.

Recent reports have claimed that the HTC Desire 20 Pro is fitted with a 6.5-inch IPS LCD display that produces a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The Snapdragon 665 chipset is said to be present under the hood of the device.

Looted Amazon Go store reportedly bills the looters automatically

Amazon opened its first cashier-less store in December 2016 which allows customers to enter the store by scanning a barcode on their smartphone app. From there, Amazon tracks the customer as they move around the store, and it bills items they take off the shelves directly to the account that was used to scan in, bypassing the need for a check-out cashier or counter. Currently, Amazon Go has 21 stores in four locations: New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle.AMazon go

One of the stores in Seattle was reportedly not spared from the onslaught of protesters who swooped on the chaos created by the “Black Lives Matter” protests that swept across the US in the wake of the killing of George Floyd by the police. A report on Reddit claims the Amazon Store was attacked by protesters who carted away several items. But it turned out the scanning system installed in the store isn’t just about scanning barcodes.

The protesters were reportedly automatically billed for the items they looted. The report offered no further details which make this likely a joke. Since the protesters may have bypassed the aspect of scanning the QR code on their Amazon app by jumping over the barrier, we can’t figure how they were automatically billed. Nah, technology hasn’t been deployed up to that extent currently.
