5G smartphones sales could top at 199 million (15% share) in 2020 – Strategy Analytics

A research report by Strategy Analytics has forecasted a surge in the number of 5G smartphones by 2020. The report predicts that global shipments of 5G-enabled phones will peak at 199 million shipments worldwide. This will translate to an estimated 15% of all smartphone shipments. This is a huge leap from the 1% market share enjoyed by 5G phones in 2019.

5G
5G will be at the forefront of new technologies

The report also estimates that China, the United States, South Korea, Japan and Germany will account for 90% of all 5G smartphone sales. This is, no doubt related to the roll-out of 5G services in those countries.

Strategy Analytics equally recognised that the deadly Coronavirus epidemic presently ravaging some parts of China will have an effect on 5G phone shipments. Of particular interest, is the disclosure that most of the shipments will happen in the second half of 2020 as the first half will witness slower than expected shipments for smartphones supporting the next-gen network standard.

In addition, the report recognised India and Indonesia as the two important markets lagging behind in 5G adoption rates as they are not expected to have mass-market 5G networks for at least another year.

Recall that Strategy Analytics had earlier forecasted that 5G phone sales by 2025 could surpass 1billion units globally as more affordable 5G phones get launched.

Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new variant of AirPods Pro

Apple recently launched its new true-wireless earbuds named AirPods Pro, which comes with the much anticipated active noise cancellation feature. However, it seems that the tech giant isn’t done yet and is set to launch a new version of AirPods Pro.

Taiwan-based publication DigiTimes has shared a preview of its upcoming story to its subscribers in which it continues to claim that Apple is planning to launch a new version of the AirPods Pro.

AirPods Pro featured

In the story preview, the publication writes: “USI likely to enter supply chain of AirPods Pro, sources say: Taiwan-based Universal Scientific Industrial (USI), a unit of ASE Technology, is likely to obtain system-in-package (SiP) orders for the upcoming AirPods Pro, according to industry sources.”

It seems that the upcoming AirPods Pro models are the same that the publication had previously referred as AirPods Pro Lite. This means these are entry-level earbuds and will be priced lower than the current AirPods Pro available in the market.

However, there’s no information available about the specs and features of the AirPods Pro Lite. The report further claims that the production for the same is likely to begin by the end of Q2 2020 or later given the current situation in China because of coronavirus outbreak.

We are not sure if the company will call the upcoming earbuds “AirPods Pro Lite” which doesn’t make sense as it has both “Pro” and “Lite” in its name. However, the essence of the report is that an affordable variant of the Apple AirPods Pro with similar sound design, quality will launch, but without active noise cancellation.

Currently, there’s nothing much known about this upcoming product but if the report is true, we expect to know more about the device in the coming weeks.

Renowned smartwatch maker Mobvoi has launched a new watch  – the TicWatch Pro 2020. The TicWatch Pro lineup was first introduced last year and later in the year, Mobvoi introduced an upgraded version with 4G LTE connectivity. The TicWatch Pro 2020 comes with several upgrades over the past cycle including expanded RAM, presently going up to 1 GB of RAM rather than 512 MB of RAM. It’s additionally progressively tough, being evaluated MIL-STD-810G for protection from shock, dust, water, and extraordinary weather conditions. It’s IP68-rated and can stay inside the water of depth up to 1.50m for close to an hour.TicWatch Pro

As for the watch itself, it’ll come in two hues – Shadow Black and Liquid Metal Silver. The strap is made from calfskin or skin-friendly silicone, while the screen is protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass 3. It retains a 1.39-inch AMOLED FSTN Touch Screen with a resolution of 00 x 400 pixels. The case is made of Polyamide and Glass Fiber while the bezel is made from Stainless Steel. the watch has a diameter of 45mm and is 12.6mm thick, weighing in at 58.5g.TicWatch Pro 2020

One major drawback to this upgraded model is that it still utilizes the old Snapdragon 2100 processor. Since this is an upgrade, we expected it to come with a newer SoC. Yes, the improved RAM may help with execution, however easily overlooked details like battery life would have profited from an improved processor.

The TicWatch Pro 2020 is already available to buy on Amazon and goes on sale on Mobvoi’s website from the beginning of March. It is priced at $259.

[UPDATE: Official Statement]OnePlus 8 launch event to be held online

UPDATE:

OnePlus reached out to us saying that this news was false. They have not canceled the offline launch event for the OnePlus 8.

“Reports of cancelling an offline launch event due to coronavirus are false. OnePlus has a history of hosting online and offline events, globally.” – OnePlus

Original story as follows:

The businesses of various tech companies have been affected due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak in China. Smartphone OEMs in China have decided to hold online-only launch event. In the previous week, Xiaomi had held an online launch conference for the Xiaomi Mi 10 series. Upcoming flagship phones from Redmi, Realme, iQOO and other brands are expected to get unveiled through online launch events. OnePlus founder and CEO Pete Lau has stated on Weibo that OnePlus will not be able to host a large offline launch event in the next few months. Hence, he is seeking ideas from OnePlus fans on holding a creative online launch conference.

The COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak have resulted in shipping delays and cancellation of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2020 event. Like other smartphone brands, OnePlus seems to be gearing up to unveil the upcoming OnePlus 8 series through an online livestream event. In the past, OnePlus had online only launch events for its smartphones. In June 2017, OnePlus had held an online launch event to announce the OnePlus 5 and few years ago, the OnePlus 2 event was unveiled through a VR livestream.

The OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro smartphones were made official in May 2019. A recent report had revealed that the Chinese manufacturer may launch the OnePlus 8 series earlier this year. It is speculated that the lineup includes OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8 Lite smartphones. It is speculated that the OnePlus 8 lineup will be made official in late March or April. Probably, this could be the company’s strategy to build a wider gap between the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8T series that is expected to arrive in the second half of the year.  The OnePlus 8, 8 Pro and even the Lite edition may come in a new green color variant.

OnePlus 8 Pro renders

The Snapdragon 865 mobile platform powered OnePlus 8 series may come equipped with 120Hz refresh rate supporting punch-hole screens. The OnePlus 8 Pro could be the first phone from the company to arrive with IP68 water and dust resistance. Also, the OnePlus 8 lineup may arrive with support for wireless charging. Probably, the company will offer users with rapid wireless charging that will be as fast as wired quick charging technology.

OnePlus 7T Pro DXOMark camera score is on par with the OnePlus 7 Pro’s

The OnePlus 8 models are presently the subject of leaks as OnePlus preps a launch. However, DxOMark has just reminded us that the company launched a couple of models a few months back – the OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro. The OnePlus 7T Pro camera has just been reviewed by DxOMark and surprisingly, the score is on par with the OnePlus 7 Pro’s camera score when it was benchmarked a couple of months earlier.

OnePlus 7T Pro
OnePlus 7T Pro DXO Mark

The OnePlus 7T Pro recorded a general score of 114, equivalent to the OnePlus 7 Pro. The two smartphones sport precisely the same camera configuration, so bodes well, albeit one would anticipate that the 7T Pro should have a slight favourable position due to coming out as an upgrade. In this case, the latest isn’t the best.

The two models share a photograph score of 122, in spite of the fact that there are a couple of fluctuations— the 7 Pro improving with noise, and the 7T Pro being a bit better in the wide-angle and night scene captures. The OnePlus 7 Pro shockingly earned a superior video score (98) versus the 7T Pro (96).OnePlus 7 Pro

OnePlus launched the OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7 in the first half of 2019.  The OnePlus 7T Pro and OnePlus 7T were unveiled later in the year, yet with jobs turned around. DxOMark’s review puts some more accentuation on OnePlus’ choice—the OnePlus 7T Pro simply doesn’t offer enough over the OnePlus 7 Pro. We do hope the company will do better this year.

Huawei P40 series may launch with Android 10 OS based EMUI 10.1

Last year, Huawei introduced the Android 10 OS based EMUI 10. It is the latest custom skin from the company but it seems like the next iteration, EMUI 10.1, is just around the corner as well.

Historically, Huawei has launched two OS versions in a single year ever since the P20 series was launched. The first was the EMUI 8.1 which succeeded the EMUI 8 (Android 8 Oreo). Similarly, EMUI 9.1 followed the EMUI 9 and was launched for the Huawei P30 series. Going by the same chain of reasoning, the P40 series is also expected to arrive with EMUI 10.1.

Huawei P40 Renders (Reported)

As of right now, no official announcement has been made regarding EMUI 10.1. In other words, it may not be launched but it is likely that it will. And if it is launched, the P40 series is probably the one that will receive the new software. For those unaware, EMUI 10 is based on the Android 10 OS. Meaning, its UX design and user interface is similar to the features provided by Android.

Notably, it is unknown what new improvements or changes EMUI 10.1 will bring to the table but if it is similar to EMUI 10, then it will also bring various performance enhancers. The current version of the Huawei custom skin brings GPU Turbo technology, which improves graphics, alongside Link Turbo (enhances network speeds by up to 70 percent) and more. In terms of memory, EROFS super file system also enables the Android platform to rear data faster by 20 percent and Ark Compiler smoothens third party applications by 60 percent.

Huawei

Currently, EMUI 10 is still being rolled out for various Huawei smartphones and has yet to be more widely available. Unfortunately, we will have to wait and see if the Chinese tech giant’s launch event to confirm anything. So stay tuned for the conference and more information regarding the P40 series.

MWC 2020 Cancellation: GSMA says exhibitors won’t get any refunds

The GSM Association (GSMA), the organisation responsible for hosting the Mobile World Congress recently announced the cancellation of this year’s edition due to the COVID-19 epidemic that emanated in China. Although the event is held annually in Barcelona, there were concerns in different quarters as regards cross-transmission and already, some of the top firms like Samsung, NVIDIA, Vivo, Sony, Amazon had announced they won’t be attending the event. However, the cancellation came as a surprise to some due to the fact that GSMA had until the last minute assured that the event would hold.

While exhibitors who had already made plans to unleash their latest products were still trying to recover, GSMA  has dealt them another blow by informing exhibitors that no refund will be issued. Instead, the association referred them to a clause in their terms and conditions that absolves the GSMA of liability.

Clause 21.10 of the Standard Terms and Conditions for Exhibition, Advertising, and Sponsorship, reads as follows;

The Organizer shall not be liable to the Company for any losses, costs, damages or expenses (whether incurred under contract, tort or otherwise) suffered or incurred as a direct or indirect result of an event beyond the control of the Organizer, including without limitation, any act of God, disease or epidemic, strike, lock-out, industrial disturbance, failure of suppliers, act of public enemy, war, labor dispute, terrorist act, blockade, riot, civil commotion, public demonstration or governmental or local authority restraint nor shall the Organizer be liable to refund any fees.

The company also disclosed that it is working on ‘a proposal’ designed to make the best of a bad situation and maintain good relations between the GSMA and its MWC commercial partners, which it expects to share by the end of March. The company also added that it’s a not-for-profit organisation and that it finds itself in a precarious financial position as a result of the cancellation. The last has definitely not been heard of this matter. We’ll keep you updated when any new development crops up.

Oppo Find X2 to launch on 6th March 2020: Report

Oppo was initially expected to unveil the Find X2 during MWC 2020 in Barcelona. But the abrupt cancelation has led to no announcement of the smartphone to surface. Now, a new report suggests that the Chinese tech giant is still on track with the launch which will apparently take place on the 6th of March 2020.

The first quarter of 2020 is always bustling with multiple launches from various different OEMs. The Mobile World Congress which is held during this time also serves as a platform for high end launches and reveals. However, since the cancelation of the event due to the recent Coronavirus outbreak, many OEMs have to now resort to independent promotion. Previously, Oppo had set a separate date of 22nd February after MWC got canceled, for the launch of the Find X2, but it seems that the date has been pushed further back.

Oppo

Oppo Find X2 is the highly anticipated successor to the original Find X and is expected to feature a similar futuristic design. It was also one of the first smartphones to feature a sliding mechanism (pop up camera), which also gave it a unique aesthetic. Thus, the Find X2 is a much hyped launch from Oppo at the moment.

The first iteration packed top notch specs to back up its special design and was a well received product. Hence, the Find X2 is also expected to arrive with notable specs as well, including a 2K OLED panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 5G SoC. According to leaked specifications, the device will feature a 6.5 inch AMOLED panel with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection.

Under the hood, Qualcomm’s flagship chipset will be found alongside 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. In terms of battery, a large 4,065mAh battery pack with support for fast charging will be featured as well. Other specifications include details regarding the camera, with a 48 megapixel primary sensor, 8 megapixel ultra wide angle lens, and a 13 megapixel telephoto lens. The selfie shooter is reportedly a 32 megapixel camera.

Oppo-Find-X-featured

Unfortunately, this is just an unconfirmed leak and we will have to wait for an official announcement or the launch event to provide concrete statements. If Oppo does launch the Find X2 in the first week of March, it will be around the same time as Oppo’s Reno 3 launch in India. So stay tuned for future coverage of both smartphones.

Huawei will take on Microsoft with its Enterprise-Grade Smart Display on Feb. 24

Huawei launched its Vision Smart TV lineup in China in 2019. And the company confirmed today that it will add a new Enterprise-grade Smart Display to the lineup at its Feb. 24 virtual press conference in Barcelona, Spain. This move would put it in competition with the likes of Microsoft’s Surface Hub 2S Whiteboard for enterprise users.

Huawei Enterprise Smart Display

The company’s teaser video confirms some of the features on the device. First, the smart display will be portable as Huawei is offering a rollable stand for the display. This enterprise-grade Vision TV will focus on four core features: Team Ideas, Remote Collaboration, Smart Interaction, & Enterprise Applications. So this means the smart display will offer features like teleconferencing between teams and probably touch screen interactions too. The display will be powered by the company’s own HarmonyOS, the same platform that runs on its other consumer-grade Vision TVs in China.

Huawei enterprise Smart TV collab

In the teaser video, Huawei also confirms seamless collaboration between laptops and mobile devices. Given that this is an enterprise-grade solution, we may expect support for 5G too. However, it’s yet to be confirmed. The video also confirms a camera on board, which is also found on its consumer-grade Vision TV models in China.

To recall, the Huawei Vision TV is a smart device that’s powered by the Honghu 818 quad-core processor based on Cortex A73 with a quad-core Mali-G65 GPU handling the graphics. The smart TV comes in three sizes: 55″, 65″, and 75″ and features a 65W speaker unit on board. The pop-up camera onboard the 75-inch Huawei Vision TV model supports 1080p 30 fps video calls. For connectivity, you get 5GHz Wi-Fi dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 & Bluetooth LE along with HDMI 2.0, coaxial, and USB 3.0 ports.
We can expect upgraded connectivity specs for this upcoming enterprise-grade Huawei Vision Display. According to the teaser video, this smart display will offer similar functionality to the Microsoft Surface Hub 2S that was launched last year.

Black Shark 3 Battery Specs revealed, features 5,000mAh battery with 65W Fast Charging

The launch of the latest entry in the Black Shark series of gaming smartphones is just around the corner. At the moment, finer details regarding the device are still unknown but certain regarding its battery has been revealed.

According to Luo Shao, the CEO of Black Shark, the company is looking to strike a balance between the battery capacity and charging power of the smartphone. In other words, a careful process is being undertaken to keep the charging and discharging rate in mind. Since the Black Shark 3 will feature 5G network, the strain on the battery life will also be noticeable. Thus, the company is planning on improving both battery capacity and charging rates while specifically designing a heat dissipation design for the smartphone

Black Shark

Furthermore, the senior executive started a vote on “which combination with charging rates, battery capacity and discharging rates do users prefer in a 5G gaming smartphone.” He offered four different configurations, that are:

  1. 65W + 5000mAh, 100% charge in 38 minutes, cycle life> 800.
  2. 55W + 4500mAh, 100% charge in 40 minutes, cycle life> 600
  3. 65W + 4000mAh, 100% charge in 30 minutes, cycle life> 600
  4. 55W + 4440mAh, 100% charge in 36 minutes, cycle life> 600

Similarly, the Chief architect of Black Shark went on to add that 5G gaming smartphones require more complex and dedicated power systems over those of other flagships. It is true to some degree considering the power draw and heats the newer and faster bandwidth is capable of causing. The chief event even heavily implied to vote for the 65W + 5,000mAh battery variant, which all but confirms the configuration Black Shark will offer.

Black Shark
Exec took a poll to find out the preferred battery + charging combo

A company generally never offers options with numbers or specs that are greater than what will eventually be offered, so it’s safe to expect that the Black Shark 3 will sport a 5,000mAh battery that supports 65W fast charging. Additionally, other leaks and reports have revealed that the gaming smartphone will support SA and NSA dual mode 5G as well. The display is expected to feature 2K resolution and offer a 120Hz refresh rate.

Under the hood, the Black Shark 3 will likely feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC paired with the X55 5G modem. For memory, an LPDDR5 flash chip alongside UFS 3.0 is expected as well. Going by the popular flagship features, Wi-Fi 6 may also be included along with NFC. Notably, due to the ongoing epidemic caused by the Coronavirus outbreak, the smartphone will be launched during an online live streaming event.

Google and Asus plan to preload Stadia on the ROG Phone 3

Last year, Google had announced its own take on the gaming world with the Stadia, an online game streaming service. Although, as hyped as the service was, the lack of many features and an unsteady launch had Stadia receive a lot of criticism. But, Google is still holding strong with constant updates and fixes and is adding more smartphones in its compatibility list, one of which is expected to be the Asus ROG Phone 3.

Google Stadia supported devices

When Google had initially launched the Stadia platform, which was envisioned to be a cross electronic device service, it only supported the Pixel smartphones. However, since then the tech giant has announced more compatible handsets. One of the latest inclusions is with Asus’ gaming smartphone, the ROG Phone 3. The Republic of Gaming device is dedicated to mobile gaming, so it makes sense that both Asus and Google are collaborating to preload the smartphone with Stadia.

While the online game streaming service from Google is paid, a free tier is expected to be launched within the next few months. The move alongside the growing smartphone compatibility list arrives to make the service better compete with its upcoming rivals. Microsoft with its xCloud, Sony with the PlayStation Now and the one that threatens Google the most, GeForce Now from Nvidia, which is officially out of beta.

With so many upcoming services, Google will have to make its online gaming platform a lot more accessible and bring in many game developers as well. Unfortunately, it is unknown when Asus ROG Phone 3 will launch, the gaming smartphone is expected to arrive before the end of 2020. Notably, ROG Phone II already supports Google’s Stadia, although it does not arrive with the service preloaded.
