First video teaser for OnePlus Concept One shows “invisible” triple rear cameras

OnePlus announced a few weeks to the end of 2019 that it will be attending CES 2020. This will be the manufacturer’s first official attendance at CES and they are ready to blow our minds away. Today, OnePlus has released a teaser video for the device which is called the OnePlus Concept One.

The OnePlus Concept One, as shown in the video has a curved display. However, the screen appears to be curvier than that of the OnePlus 7 Pro. The curved display meets a gold-painted metal frame which is home to the familiar textured Alert Slider.

Why all these do not seem out of the ordinary, it is the rear design that is actually quite magical. The OnePlus Concept One has triple rear cameras arranged vertically in the middle with an LED flash beneath the last sensor but they do not become visible at first and giving off the impression that they are invisible. This illusionary trick is as a result of OnePlus’ groundbreaking color-shifting glass technology.

There is no camera bump but there is a thin line that shows the perimeter of the camera housing which is shaped like a champagne flute. That is all the teaser reveals but we expect there will be more before the event next week.

When OnePlus announced that it will be showing off a concept device, we were already pretty excited but this video teaser takes our excitement level a notch higher.

What do you think about the video, meh or pumped?

Xiaomi & Huawei to use foldable panels from Samsung Display in 2020: Report

Xiaomi and Huawei will reportedly use foldable smartphone panels from Samsung Display this year. This will be a shift from their current flexible/foldable panel suppliers. Huawei Mate X used foldable panels from China’s BOE while Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Alpha used a flexible display from another Chinese display maker, Visionox.

Xiaomi’s foldable prototype was showcased by founder Lin Bin back in 2019

According to the new report, Xiaomi’s foldable smartphone will use flexible panels made by Samsung Display. Visionox was supplying foldable panels to Xiaomi initially but the yield was reportedly not enough to produce the panels in large quantities. So Xiaomi is said to be in talks with Samsung Display to secure supply for foldable panels. However, the same report states that we might not see a foldable phone from Xiaomi this year.

What’s surprising is that Huawei is also reportedly shifting its foldable panel supplier this year. The report states that the telecommunications giant is already in the process of securing foldable panels for its smartphone from Samsung Display. Its Mate X came with BOE’s foldable panels but Samsung Display’s panel reportedly has better quality and quantity. It is said that Huawei is likely to use Samsung Display as the primary supplier for its foldable, with BOE acting as an additional supplier.

huawei mate x

The report also states that Huawei’s next-generation foldable smartphone will launch in the second half of the year alongside the second-generation Galaxy Fold model. This makes sense given how the Mate X2 is rumored to release sometime around IFA 2020. The rumor also said that the X2 will be outward folding, similar to the Galaxy Fold.

Note that the new foldable smartphone expected at MWC 2020 in February is the Mate XS, a slightly modified version of the existing Mate X foldable, most likely using BOE’s foldable panel.

The recent success of the Galaxy Fold seems to have boosted Samsung Display’s reputation in the market. It is said that the display maker received a lot of interest from top Chinese smartphone makers like OPPO, Vivo, & Huawei but its initial focus is on supplying foldable panels to Samsung. After the launch of the clamshell Galaxy Fold model sometime before MWC, Samsung Display will focus on supplying panels for the Mate X2 and the second generation Galaxy Fold devices. In the meantime, it is likely to start supplying panels for the foldable smartphone from Xiaomi, expected to launch in 2021.

So it looks like Samsung and Huawei are likely to remain the top foldable smartphone makers, even in 2020.

[UPDATE: Official Statement] Xiaomi security camera bug shows video feed of others; Google disables support

UPDATE: Xiaomi has sent out an official statement regarding this bug. The company says this incident happened because of a bug in a new feature it was testing on December 26. It suspended the feature on January 2 and is currently working with Google to perfect it. Full statement (including translation) has been added at the end of this article.

Smart home security cameras are getting popular given the ease-of-access they offer at an affordable price point. Accessing the feed is now also quite easy as the user just need to perform a voice command to see the security camera feed.

However, a Reddit user has come across a security bug related to the smart home security camera. He owns Google Nest Hub and some Xiaomi Mijia security cams but when he performed a voice command for the feed, he came across an unexpected result.

Instead of seeing the camera feed they expected, they saw feeds from other people’s homes. Some of the feeds even had people in them, including a sleeping man and an infant. The unexpected feeds all appear in black and white with bizarre scan lines and other distortions. You can check out the sample footage through the source link.

However, it has not been independently verified that this is true or not. AndroidAuthority got in touch with Xiaomi and Google for the same. While Xiaomi hasn’t responded to their request yet, Google spokesperson said: “We’re aware of the issue and are in contact with Xiaomi to work on a fix. In the meantime, we’re disabling Xiaomi integrations on our devices.”

It is not yet clear who is at fault here — Xiaomi or Google. But given that Google has disabled support for Xiaomi, it implies that the Chinese company is at fault otherwise Google wouldn’t have disabled support if it didn’t have some sort of evidence.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM XIAOMI (Translation below)xiaomi mi camera bug statement

Regarding Mi Home Security Camera Basic 1080p (Mi Home smart Camera overseas edition) temporarily offline connection to the Google Home Hub.

1. On January 2, 2020, Beijing time, we learned that Mi Home Security Camera Basic 1080p, which was sold overseas, was connected to the Google screen speaker through Google Home Hub, and there was a small probability that it would receive streaming images from the Camera under other Google user accounts. The relevant service was launched on December 26, 2019 as a test of a new function, and we have communicated with the relevant platform to suspend the service at 17:00 on January 2, 2020 and fix the relevant Bug.

2. Mi Home Security Camera Basic 1080p’s connection to Google Home Hub is one of the features developed by Xiaomi for Google smart Home system. The aforementioned Bug occurred when Mi Home Security Camera Basic 1080p sold overseas was connected to Google’s products with screen speakers via the Google Home Hub platform, only with minimal probability in the case of weak network. The total number of users found to have relevant usage scenarios is 1044, of which only a few are likely to be affected.

3. Domestic users and all users (including Chinese and overseas users) who use mijia APP platform and mi mijia related cameras are not affected.

Apple’s iPhone 9 series could debut later this year

A couple of years ago, Apple launched iPhone SE which offered an old design with upgraded internal components. This experiment from the company proved successful, especially in the developing countries like India.

Now, the company is reportedly working on its spiritual successor — iPhone 9. Now, as per the report, that phone is also expected to get another variant with a bigger display, dubbed as iPhone 9 Plus.

Apple-iPhone-X
Apple iPhone X

A report coming from China based on the supply chain information, Apple will be launching another LCD-display based iPhone to its lineup by the end of this year on in early 2021. It is said to be a bigger brother of the soon-to-be-released iPhone 9 model.

While the design for the smartphone is not yet confirmed, it is said that Apple has narrowed down to two options. The first involves fitting the phone with a large 5.5-inch display that’s probably paired with thick bezels and a Touch ID home button, whereas the second option centers around a 6.1-inch screen coupled with slimmer bezels and a notch.

Branding and pricing information about this upcoming phone hasn’t been announced yet, although reports indicate that the model in question could be called the iPhone 9 Plus and the pricing could start at $499.

This report is in line with the report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published around a month ago. However, he didn’t mention possible debut this year and instead claimed Apple was targeting a Q1 2021 release schedule.

The specifications about the upcoming iPhone 9 Plus isn’t known at this time but its extremely likely that the specs will be similar to the iPhone 9. The iPhone 9 is expected to come powered by the new A13 Bionic chipset paired with a decent 3GB of RAM.

If this turns out to be true, then the iPhone lineup for the year seems pretty crowded. Along with the iPhone 9 and iPhone 9 Plus, the 12 series is expected to have iPhone 12 and 12 Plus as well as iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max.
