Xiaomi claims to have more than 279 million MIUI users

MIUI, the custom user interface for Xiaomi smartphones based on Android operating system is one of the popular one out there. Although the company has received some flack because of its decision to introduce advertisements in the user interface, it still tops the charts in various aspects.

Now today, the company has announced that it has more than 279 million MIUI users. Further, Xiaomi added that more than three million users of the MIUI has over five Internet of Things (IoT) connected devices which includes Smart Cooker, Smart Door Lock, etc.

Xiaomi’s IoT platform has connected to around 196 million IoT equipments. The devices include Xiaomi smart TVs, ACs, air purifiers, humidifiers, and new fans among others things. It further adds that there are over 49.9 million users of its smart speakers than can control a large number of company’s devices.

MIUI 11

The announcement from the company comes just months after Xiaomi launched its latest custom user interface — MIUI 11. The new operating system from the company, MIUI 11, is based on the latest Android 10. Here are the features of the newer version:

  • New Icons and smoother animations: With the latest MIUI 11, Xiaomi has tweaked the look of the icons found in the UI and they now have a minimalist yet appealing look. The company has also tweaked the animations which are slower in comparison to MIUI 10 but they now provide for a rich and immersive experience.
  • Ultra Power Saving Mode: This mode is meant for prolonging battery life when running out of charge. According to the company, while in this mode, a device can provide a battery backup of upto 24 hours with just 5% of battery. When this mode is turned on, the device turns off the Wi-Fi module, hides non-essential apps, turns the display colour to black/white whilst restricting background processes.
  • Kids Mode: It is meant for parents who want to create a safe digital environment for their kids. While in kids mode, the device will only be able to run applications that are whitelisted by their parent or guardian. Besides, it also has an education space which Xiaomi claims is an intuitive manner to teach young kids.
  • Casting to external display: It allows smartphones running on MIUI 11 to wirelessly cast onscreen content which includes games, videos, documents and other applications to TV, given the TV also supports this functionality.
  • Digital Wellbeing: Device owners will be able to check how much time they spend on each application and if needed they can cut down the usage time in order to maintain a healthy mental and physical well-being.
  • Earthquake alerts: With the help of data provided by regional offices, devices running MIUI 11 can notify its owner in case of an ongoing earthquake or after one takes place. Moreover, it will also provide additional details like nearby relief centres and places to avail medical service in case of a mishap.
  • Android 10: While it is not necessary for every device running MIUI 11 to run on the latest Android 10, as the same skin could even be built on older versions of Android like Oreo or Pie. However, devices launched recently will get MIUI 11 based on Android 10.

Honor Magic Watch 2 images surface online ahead of its launch

Huawei’s sub-brand Honor is all set to launch a new smartwatch named Honor Magic Watch 2 in its home country on 26th November along with the Honor V30 and V30 Pro smartphones.

Recently, an image of the device was leaked online and now more images of the device in question have surfaced online (courtesy of TechRadar), which reveals what we can expect from it in terms of design. The images showcases the device from various angles, making sure that we get a proper look at the upcoming product.

Honor Magic Watch 2 Leak

The design of the upcoming smartwatch seems very similar to that of its predecessor. The letters on the upper-right corner of the dial have been changed from Red to White and the boot logo on the device seems to have been replaced by the Honor brand logo.

So, in terms of design, nothing major seems to be in store. As per the reports, along with the support for touchscreen display, the company is expected to come with a new control system for the smartwatch but details about that remain unknown.

Honor Magic Watch 2 Leak

Honor Magic Watch 2 Leak

We expect the Honor Magic Watch 2 to come powered by Kirin A1 processor which should help the company offer better performance and a more stable Bluetooth connection. Currently, nothing is known about the specifications of this smartwatch.

The original Honor Watch Magic comes with a 1.2-inch HD AMOLED display with 390 x 390 pixels screen resolution which offers 326ppi pixel density. Under the hood, the device is powered by ARM M4 chipset, coupled with 16MB RAM and 128GB internal storage.

It supports GPS, GLONASS, and GALILEO for precise positioning and also comes with Bluetooth 4.2, 5ATM Water-resistant up to 50 meters, NFC for Huawei Pay and a 178mAh battery which is claimed to offer up to 7 days worth of battery life.

As for the features, it comes with Huawei’s TruSeen 3.0 technology for continuous heart rate monitoring. Also, with Huawei’s TruRelax technology and support from the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the watch provides 24-hour blood pressure monitoring and will suggest breathing exercises with real-time feedback.

Huawei receives yet another 90-day temporary extension from export ban

As expected, the U.S. government has extended Huawei’s temporary export license for another 90 days. This will be the third 90-day temporary extension granted to the Chinese telecommunications giant, ever since it was placed under the U.S. Entity list which barred U.S. companies from trading with Huawei.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro featured 01
Huawei Mate 30 Pro is one of the best smartphones in the market today but does not come with Google apps

Huawei’s last 90-day extension expired yesterday, so this announcement was timely. According to the Trump administration, the extension is granted to support the existing infrastructure built by Huawei in the U.S. For example, a number of rural carriers in the country are dependent on Huawei and ZTE’s telecommunications equipment. Replacing them immediately isn’t an option given that it could cost them nearly billions to suddenly shift to another equipment maker.

“The Temporary General License extension will allow carriers to continue to service customers in some of the most remote areas of the United States who would otherwise be left in the dark,” said the U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “The Department will continue to rigorously monitor sensitive technology exports to ensure that our innovations are not harnessed by those who would threaten our national security.”

This 90-day reprieve also allows Google to support Huawei’s existing Android-based smartphones. However, this extension does not apply to new models, so smartphones like the Mate 30 Pro won’t still be able to run Google applications.

HarmonyOS

While Huawei’s international smartphone strategy is currently in a shambles, the company seems to be working hard with its HarmonyOS to find a workaround for Google Apps. Recently, Huawei’s Ling Hua revealed in an interview with CNBC that the company would announce its HarmonyOS strategy on November 20. He didn’t reveal what kind of strategy he was referring to but it could be anything from bringing HarmonyOS to smartphones to doubling down the focus on IoT products. You can read more about what he said about HarmonyOS and its future from this article.

Huawei Nova 6 launch date is December 5

The Honor V30 series of flagship phones will be made official in China on Nov. 26. Honor’s parent firm Huawei is also gearing to launch the Nova 6 5G smartphone. Yesterday, the Chinese firm had released the first video teaser to reveal its front design. While the rumor mill has been speculating that the Nova 6 5G will go official in December, there was no confirmation on it yet. Huawei has now finally confirmed that the Nova 6 5G will be announced on Dec. 5.

The below shown official launch posters state that the Nova 6 5G will be the latest edition to its Nova series of smartphones. It will be arriving as a selfie-centric smartphone. The launch poster confirms that it will be holding an unveil event in Wuhan on Dec. 5 to announce the Nova 6 5G smartphone. The Nova 6 5G will be made official exactly 10 days after the MatePad Pro flagship tablet will go official in the country.

The video teaser that was revealed yesterday had revealed that the Nova 6 5G is equipped with an elliptical cutout at the upper-left corner of its screen for its two front-facing cameras. The exact size of the screen is not known yet. However, the company confirmed that the phone is capable at capturing 105-degree superwide angle selfie shots. The smartphone also features a side-mounted fingerprint reader integrated with the power button.

Through 3C certifications it was revealed that the Huawei Nova 6 will be arriving in 4G only (WLZ-AL10) and 5G ready (WLZ-AN00) variants. Both models may arrive with support for 40W fast charging. There is a possibility that the 5G edition of the Nova 6 could be fueled by Kirin 990 5G whereas the regular version may feature Kirin 990 or 980 SoC.

Huawei Nova 6 Specifications and Price (Rumored)

Rumors surrounding the Nova 6 phone have revealed it will be coming with a 6.44-inch full HD+ IPS LCD display with 1080 x 2340 pixels resolution support. The punch-hole on the display could be featuring a 32-megapixel + 12-megapixel dual front-facing cameras. The Kirin 990 powered phone could be coming to the Chinese market in 8 GB and 12 GB RAM LPDDR4x RAM editions. The phone is expected to release in UFS 2.1 storage options like 128 GB and 256 GB. The device may come equipped with a 4,000mAh battery. Huawei confirms MatePad will come with a Stylus

Huawei’s high-end MatePad tablet will officially launch on November 25. A few days before its official release, Huawei has confirmed that the MatePad will come with a stylus as well. We don’t have any information on this stylus, however, it is likely that it is announced as an upgraded version of the MatePen stylus that was unveiled back in 2016 alongside the original MateBook 2-in-1.

MatePen MatePadHuawei’s new MatePad tablet is likely going to be targeted at the high-end market. Apart from a stylus, previous renders reveal that the tablet will feature a large iPad Pro-esque display with a punch-hole camera on the top left corner. The MatePad could very well be the first punch-hole tablet in the market. The bezels around the display also look pretty thin from the renders. At the back, there should be dual cameras while inside, you should get a powerful chip like the Kirin 990. Other expected features include 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a pogo pin connector for keyboard attachments, and a large battery.

Huawei MediaPad M7 (MatePad Pro)

Since the MatePad is going to be marketed as a high-end tablet, expect it to retail at a premium price tag. Unfortunately, we don’t have any ideas about its pricing as of yet.

XiaoAI 3.0 brings Google Assistant-like continued conversation feature

Google recently announced a new feature for its Google Assistant that enables it to have continuous conversation. Now, a similar feature is being rolled out by China-based Xiaomi for its XiaoAI smart assistant with the version 3.0.

Making announced during the Xiaomi Developers Conference, the company claimed it to be the first smart voice assistant which is capable of supporting full-duplex natural continuous conversation on smartphones. However, its noteworthy that the current interrupt function is only supported by two devices — Mi 9 Pro and Mi 9.

XiaoAI Smart Assistant

The new update will now be rolling out to the users of Xiaomi and Redmi smartphone users and the company added that it is being released on an “Immediate Upgrade” command.

It has also added that the continuous dialogue can be achieved with a single wake-up, and other instructions can be interrupted at any time. Using the feature, the assistant stay active and listening so that you can continue to ask follow-up questions without needing to repeat the wake-up command each time.

The function also allows users to convert call content into text when the user isn’t available or is inconvenient for them to answer the call. The artificial intelligence can also communicate the automatic reply to the caller.

Although Google had released a similar feature in last summer, it was only available for audio-only Google Home series of smart speakers. However, the company recently released the feature for its smartphones as well.

Redmi K30 5G dual-mode phone to debut in December; revealed Xiaomi CEO

Xiaomi Developers Conference was held this morning in Beijing, China today. At the event, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun reviewed the company’s progress towards launching 5G phones in the country. Jun announced that the Redmi K30 with dual mode 5G support will be made official in December.

Xiaomi Developer Conference 2019While Jun confirmed the December arrival of the Redmi K30, he did not spill any information on its specifications. Interestingly, Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing had recently said through a Weibo post that the Redmi K30 will launch next year. Probably, the Redmi K30 will break cover next month whereas the advanced Redmi K30 Pro may debut in early 2020.

At the recently held China Mobile Global Partners Conference Jun had stated that all Xiaomi phones priced above 2,000 Yuan (~$285) will arrive with 5G support. He had also revealed that the company will launch at least 10 5G phones in 2020. The Chinese firm will debut affordable 5G phones in the first half of the coming year.

Redmi K30 will be the first Xiaomi phone to support standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) dual-mode 5G. It adopts a pill-shaped punch-hole display design since it features dual front-facing cameras. The Redmi K30 will be the company’s first phone to come with a punch-hole display.

Redmi K30 leaked photo

Weibing has said that Redmi has used the punch-hole display technology as it has matured and has been stable. A leaked image of the man holding a mysterious phone with an elliptical cutout for the dual selfie cameras had appeared recently on Weibo. It was believed to be the Redmi K30. There are no leaks on the other specs of the phone.

Redmi Snapdragon 7 series phone

The Redmi K30 is expected to come equipped with a MediaTek 5G chipset. However, there is a possibility that the company may use a Qualcomm 5G chipset instead. The reason behind it is that when Qualcomm had announced the first Snapdragon 7 series dual-mode 5G SoC through a Weibo post, Redmi had reposted it and stated that Redmi will be launching the first batch of products featuring the chipset. This suggested that the Redmi K30 5G could be equipped with the rumored Snapdragon 735 5G chipset.

TikTok was first launched in China in September 2016 and was later introduced to the overseas market in 2017. It was ranked as the fourth most downloaded non-gaming app in the world last year, hitting 655.8 million unique installs. This year so far, the app has accumulated 614 million downloads which is 6 percent more than it had by the same point last year. At this pace, it will even surpass last years record number of installs.

The app is the third most popular app worldwide in the non-gaming category after WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger which have 707.4 million and 636.2 million installs so far this year, respectively. The data released also show that India accounted for the largest share of the 1.5 billion cumulative downloads, with 31% of all unique installs coming from the country. China came in second with an estimated 11.5% of all installs but that is for the Chinese version called Douyin. The figures could even be higher a it doesn’t include downloads from third-party Android stores which are popular among Android phone users in China.

TikTok is also popular in the US with approximately 8.2% of the 1.5 billion total downloads coming from the US. The growing popularity of the app in the US has not gone unnoticed by the authorities. Huawei Nova 6 5G gets first official video ad; teases super wide-angle selfies

Just as Honor is gearing up for the launch of the V30 series, Huawei is also working on the Nova 6 5G phone. There have been multiple leaks about the phone but there hasn’t been any official confirmation until now.

Huawei Nova 6 5G

Huawei’s official Weibo account has shared the first video advert that confirms the Nova 6 5G is coming soon. The short video gives us a good look at the front of the device and its punch-hole display which houses two cameras.

The Nova 6’s punch-hole is on the left side unlike that of Samsung’s Galaxy S10+ which has its own on the right. The bezels are not completely gone as there is still a bit of chin.

The phone’s volume rocker is visible on the right frame and just right after it, you can see the break in the frame where the indentation created for the side-mounted fingerprint scanner/power button.

At the end of the video, Huawei reveals the Nova 6 5G will be able to shoot 105° super wide-angle selfies, no tanks to its secondary selfie camera.

A leak from earlier this month revealed the Huawei Nova 6 5G will have an LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It will be powered by the Kirin 990 processor and will have a 4000mAh battery with support for 40W SuperCharge fast charging. Its dual front-facing cameras are reported to be a 32MP +12MP combo while the rear is said to house 60MP + 16MP + 2MP + 2MP quad cameras.

Huawei is yet to announce a release date but we will not be too surprised if it launches on November 25 alongside the MatePad Pro tablet.

Geekbench result reveals Realme 5s has 4GB of RAM

The Realme 5s arrives in two days as a slight refresh to the Realme 5. So far, the only upgrade is the primary camera which is now a 48MP sensor compared to the 12MP sensor of the Realme 5. Ahead of the phone’s launch, a Geekbench benchmark result has surfaced.

The Realme 5s was benchmarked today, appearing as the realme RMX1925. It runs Android 9 Pie and has 4GB of RAM. Its 1.8GHz octa-core processor codenamed trinket is the Snapdragon 665 processor. This is the same codename that appeared on the Geekbench result of the Realme 5 and Xiaomi Mi CC9e.

Realme 5s Geekbench

The device scored 314 points in the single-core test and 1368 points in the multi-core test.

The Realme 5s will pack a 6.51-inch HD+ display with a waterdrop notch. The processor will draw power from a 5000mAh battery. While the capacity is the same as that of the Realme 5, we hope it comes with support for fast charging and not 5V 2A like the Realme 5.

Realme has also confirmed the phone will have quad cameras and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The Realme 5s will come in a new red color variant which should be called Crystal Red. It will also be available in Crystal Blue and Crystal Purple just like the Realme 5.

There are reports the price tag of the Realme 5s is INR 8,999 (~$125). That is cheaper than the price tag of the upcoming 3GB RAM + 32GB version of the Redmi Note 8; a phone with the same chipset and 48MP quad rear cameras too but a sharper display and a smaller battery capacity.

Apple has reportedly sold 10 million iPhones in China, thanks to iPhone 11!

Apple‘s latest iPhone 11 was reported to be a very popular product in China after its launch. This came out as a good sign for the US company whose sales have been on the decline in recent times. Retailers in China revealed that iPhone 11 sales are up over 300 percent compared to last year’s iPhone XR release. A report by Bloomberg has now emerged to support this.iPhone 11

The report claims Apple has shipped 10 million iPhones in China between the months of September and October. This claim is based on Bloomberg’s “calculations from government data on overall and Android device shipments”. According to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, which is run by the country’s technology ministry, iPhone shipments rose up 6% from a year earlier.

Apple has been on the decline in China prior to the iPhone 11 release. This is as a result of the rise of local brands like Xiaomi, Huawei, OPPO and Vivo who offer affordable pricing on top of a decent specs lineup. Apple’s Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook hinted that new pricing, a monthly payment program and trade-in offers helped the iPhone’s performance in China.

Canalys analyst, Nicole Peng is of the view that Chinese customers seem to be receiving the iPhone 11 series better than last year’s models as a result of the lowered retail price. He noted that the latest products are going strong despite the old models seeing weaker shipments.

Honor V30 Pro official launch event invites surface online

The Honor V30 Pro official launch isn’t far now. The device is slated for release on the 26th of November, but it still pops up very frequently in leaks and rumors. Earlier today we got to see the design renders for the device in all their glory. Now, we’re getting a closer look at the official physical invites for the launch event.

The invitations are designed to look similar to passports, since Honor are calling them 5G passports. On the inside, we’ve got all the relevant information regarding the event’s launch date and venue, as well as an image of an Honor ambassador. It’s a cute idea, though definitely not the most interesting we’ve seen from a Chinese company.

The Honor V30 Pro is said to feature a quad camera system on its rear. It may include a 60-megapixel primary lens, a 16-megapixel superwide lens, a 2-megapixel macro lens and a 3D ToF sensor. On other side, it may feature a quad camera system with a 60-megapixel main lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens, a 20-megapixel superwide lens and a ToF camera.

According to even more rumors, the standard V30 could have a 4,000mAh battery whereas the Pro model could be equipped with a larger 4,200mAh battery. The 3C appearance of the alleged V30 Pro phone has revealed that it may arrive with support for 40W fast charging. The Pro model may also support wireless charging. Lastly, the Honor V30 series is expected to support NSA and SA 5G connectivity in China.

At the moment, there are several smartphones with the support to 5th generation networks available at modest prices, at least in the Asian market. You can get all of them for less than €500 in China and they offer flagship-class performance for such a low price. But which one is the best and which has the highest value for money? Design

In my personal opinion, Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G has the most impressive design due to its amazing transparent back. But the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G comes with a better build quality since its frame is made of aluminum 7000 series and its glass back is protected by Gorilla Glass 6 that is the latest version of Corning’s protection. Vivo iQOO Pro 5G is a smartphone meant for gamers, but it does not have a so gaming-centric design, unlike other gaming phones. Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G is the lightest device, while Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G is slightly thinner and smaller. Yet I prefer the Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G for its transparent back, but that is only about personal tastes.

Display

Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G and Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G have a better display than Vivo iQOO Pro 5G since they offer a higher image quality. Both have a high DCI P3 coverage and they even support HDR10, while Vivo iQOO Pro 5G does not. The advantage of the iQOO Pro 5G is a slightly wider display diagonal which often makes gamers and productivity users happier. But image quality is definitely more important, given that we are talking about just 0.02 inches of difference. Between Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G and Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G, there are just marginal differences in the image quality.

Hardware/Software

Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G takes the gold medal in the hardware comparison since it sports the most powerful Qualcomm’s chipset, the highest amount of RAM and a higher amount of internal storage, at least in the most expensive configuration. Both Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G and Vivo iQOO Pro 5G are fueled by the Snapdragon 855+ chipset, but only the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G has internal storage up to 512 GB. Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G has up to 512 GB as well, but it packs the older Snapdragon 855 chipset, so it can not reach the performance of the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G. In each case, you get Android 9 Pie out of the box and a single-mode Snapdragon X50 5G modem, but only Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G has expandable storage.

Camera

The most performing device in terms of camera quality is the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G again. It packs a triple camera setup including laser autofocus, 2x optical zoom, and an ultrawide sensor. The Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G is a great camera phone too and it offers a better selfie camera. If you need a camera phone, do not choose the Vivo iQOO Pro 5G.

Battery

Vivo iQOO Pro 5G has the biggest battery and it lasts more on a single charge, which is very important for gamers since this is a gaming phone. But Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G is the only to support wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.

Price

Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G is currently on sale for €424/$471 making it the cheapest 5G phone in China, Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G’s price starts from €470/$520, and Vivo iQOO Pro 5G costs about €485/$538 in India. Overall, Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro 5G is the most complete device due to the support to wireless charging and reverse wireless charging, better build quality, and better hardware. But Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G is currently the best buy due to its extremely affordable price.
