Realme‘s Chief Marketing Officer teased a new phone earlier today which bears the moniker Realme X2 Pro. The device is shown to be a flagship model that would be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset. The OnePlus 7T was recently launched and one of the standout features is a 90Hz display refresh rate. The Realme exec had earlier teased this feature and also disclosed that the device will be cheaper than the OnePlus 7T. Interestingly, OnePlus and Realme are owned by BBK Electronics and OnePlus is known for its cheap flagship models.

The full specification of the Realme X2 Pro is not known but a recent Bluetooth SIG certification for an unknown Realme RMX1931, believed to be the X2 Pro, points to a 6.55-inch full HD display with support for Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity. The device will also run on ColorOS 6.0. It is also expected to retain the 64MP main camera and 32MP selfie shooter onboard the Realme X2.

The smartphone is also expected to release in India since it had recently received approval from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Hyundai is developing Flying Cars with an ex-NASA aeronautics engineer as head

Flying cars are probably our future of transportation, and Hyundai is keen to grab a piece of this market. Hyundai Motor Group has just launched a new Urban Air Mobility Division that is concerned with the development of commercial flying car technology. The company’s interest in this field isn’t surprising given that the urban air mobility sector is expected to grow into a $1.5 trillion USD market in the next 20 years.

This is the BELL NEXUS flying car concept showcased at CES 2019

Hyundai’s air mobility division will be headed by Dr. Jaiwon Shin, an experienced aeronautics engineer who used to lead NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. He has overseen projects that include a supersonic X-plane, UAS traffic management, and Urban Air Mobility. Under Dr. Shin’s leadership, Hyundai wants to establish itself ‘as a driving force in urban air mobility’.

The Urban Air Mobility division will be involved in coming up with innovative and smart solutions to ever-increasing traffic problems across the globe. Flying cars could be one of these solutions.

Flying cars has been a concept that has long piqued the interest of companies such as Uber and Volocopter. With Hyundai jumping into this emerging industry, it remains to be seen whether we’ll be able to see a commercial flying taxi or car anytime in the next 10 years.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 5G is receiving its first update, but don’t get too excited

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold finally made its way out of South Korea recently. The company’s first foldable is already available to purchase in the U.S. and will soon be made available in other regions such as India and UAE. Now it looks like the first update to the Galaxy Fold 5G is rolling out to its users.

Samsung Galaxy Fold Continuity
Samsung Galaxy Fold Continuity

Even if you are a Galaxy Fold user, you may have nothing to get excited about this new update for two major reasons. First, this update is limited to the Galaxy Fold 5G edition that’s currently being sold in South Korea. If you remember, in the U.S., Samsung is selling the non-5G version of the device. Second, even if you are a proud owner of the Galaxy Fold 5G, note that the update is a minor one and doesn’t bring any significant new features to the device.

So despite being the first update to the Galaxy Fold since its release, most international users won’t be eligible for this one.

Paypal becomes the first Foreign Payment platform in China via GoPay

PayPal has received the green light to acquire a majority stake in the local payments platform, GoPay. With this approval from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), PayPal has become the first foreign payment platform to enter the Chinese market.

paypal china

According to the statement from GoPay, PayPal will acquire a 70% controlling stake in the company through one of its subsidiaries called Yinbaobao based in Shanghai. With this move, PayPal will compete with the likes of local payment platforms such as Ant Financial’s Alipay and Tencent’s WeChat Pay, both of which are extremely popular in China. GoPay has licenses to carry out online as well as mobile transactions.

Although this approval from PBOC may come as off as surprising to many given the recent trade war, it is in line with the statement made by China’s central bank last year. The central bank said that it will open up China’s payments market to foreign companies to improve competition. In this regard, American Express was approved to set up card-clearing services in China late last year.

PayPal is yet to disclose the terms of the deal. But it said that the deal is expected to close by Q4 2019.

OnePlus 7T Kernel Source code is available now

OnePlus’ popularity among smartphone enthusiasts is not just because of its value for money smartphones. The company is also known for its incredible support towards the developer community. Staying true to its popularity, OnePlus has released the kernel source code for the newly announced OnePlus 7T.

OnePlus 7T charging Box

The availability of the kernel source code opens up the possibility of building custom ROMs, porting new features to older OnePlus devices and a variety of other customization options. The company has released kerne source for all of its previous smartphones, but it’s refreshing to see the code being available on the OnePlus 7T almost immediately after launch.

OnePlus’ OxygenOS is one of the best implementations of Android today. The OxygenOS 10 based on the latest Android 10 version is already being rolled out to OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro models. Older models like the OnePlus 5T and the 6T are also scheduled to receive the latest update in the coming months. The company is also actively working towards improving the overall OS with the help of user feedback. For example, recently, OnePlus committed to changing its policy of aggressively killing background apps and promised to promote custom ROMs for EOL (End of Life) devices.

Sources hint Trump is considering Delisting Chinese firms from US Stock Exchanges

According to data obtained from the website of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, as of February 25, 2019, there were 156 Chinese companies listed on the U.S. exchanges with a total market capitalization of $1.2 trillion. These companies are at risk of getting delisted as three sources familiar with the lingering US/China trade dispute hint that Donald Trump’s administration is considering delisting Chinese companies from US stock exchanges.Huawei logo

This would definitely take the dispute to an entirely new level, the outcome of which we can’t predict. The move is said to be part of a broader effort to limit US investment in Chinese companies, two of the sources said. One said it was motivated by the Trump administration’s growing security concerns about the companies’ activities.

The news has triggered a reaction from the stock exchange as major US stock indexes slipped. Shares of some of the Chinese companies listed on the US stock exchanges dropped as a result. Alibaba shares closed at 5.15% lower while that of JD.com fell 5.95% and Baidu Inc declined 3.67%. The iShares China Large-Cap ETF shed 1.15%. Shares of New York Stock Exchange-owner Intercontinental Exchange Inc ended down 1.88% and shares of Nasdaq Inc declined 1.70%.

Delisting a listed company will not be an easy thing to do and at present, it is no clear how that would be done.

Here’s Why OnePlus 7T doesn’t feature Wireless Charging

OnePlus announced its new OnePlus 7T flagship last week featuring top of the line specifications at a really competitive price tag. The phone has all the bells and whistles that you would expect on a 2019 flagship model, except for one major feature: Wireless Charging. OnePlus has traditionally steered clear of this technology citing slow charging speeds. The company’s CEO Pete Lau gives a somewhat similar answer for the absence of wireless charging on the OnePlus 7T as well.

OnePlus 7T featured

According to Pete, OnePlus wants wireless charging technology to be on par with its Warp Charge speeds. The company is not looking to ‘Settle‘ for anything less. Also, OnePlus is still unable to solve the heating issues associated with wireless charging technology which is why the new model skips on this feature.

While Pete’s comments about wireless charging were true up to a few months back, things have radically changed over the past one month. Xiaomi, Huawei, and OPPO have all announced fast Wireless Charging technologies for their flagship models. For example, the Mi Charge Turbo 30W wireless charging is already available on the Mi 9 Pro 5G. It charges at the same speed as most fast chargers available today. Xiaomi also has a couple of interesting wireless charging accessories that work well with its new smartphone.

20W Xiaomi Wireless Charging Station
Xiaomi also has a special 20W Wireless Charging station

Even the newly announced Mate 30 Pro comes with 27W wireless charging support, the same speed as Mi 9’s fast wired charger. But the most interesting development is OPPO’s VOOC Wireless 30W flash charge technology. The current Warp Charge 30 is actually a licensed version of OPPO’s VOOC charging and it’s extremely likely that this 30W wireless charging tech from OPPO can be used inside OnePlus’ upcoming flagships.

As compared to Samsung’s flagship models, OnePlus’ flagship series miss out on a couple of features like IP rating and wireless charging. But as the company aims to take on the premium segment of the smartphone market, it is imperative that these ‘premium’ features also make it to its devices.

Huawei begins trial production of 5nm Kirin 1000 SoC

Huawei’s latest processors are the Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G. At the moment, they can be only found inside the Mate 30 and the Mate 30 Pro and their 5G versions. The processors will power Huawei and Honor flagship phones for the next year or thereabout before a new flagship SoC will be released. According to new reports, that SoC is already under development and it will be called the Kirin 1000!

Kirin 1000

According to Huawei Central, the Kirin 1000 will be built on the 5nm process based on info from industry sources. The sources also informed them that the processor will be announced in H2 2019 and first appear in the Huawei Mate 40 series.

The Kirin 1000 will feature the Cortex-A77 cores Arm announced earlier this year and which was expected to be present in the Kirin 990 instead of the Cortex-A76 cores it uses. The A77 brings a 20% improvement in performance and with the switch to a smaller node size, that improvement in performance should be higher.

There are still a lot of unknown details about the processor but that isn’t surprising since there is still about 10 months of waiting before it is announced.

Redmi K20 series, Redmi Note 7 series and more get Google Play Services for AR

Google’s AR Core was recently renamed to Google Play Services for AR. You would think that every new Android device that launches should support it right out of the box but that isn’t the case. Google has to manually grant support to devices which explains why there are always posts about which devices are now supported.

Google Play Services for AR

Apparently, the reason for all devices not having support right out of the box is because Google needs to work with manufacturers to “create a custom calibration profile for each device”. This custom profile is based on the camera configuration of the phone and differs for each phone.

The list gets updated regularly with some devices sometimes showing up even before launch while others are added months after they have been announced. There are also some devices that may never even make

Below is a list of the latest entries on the supported devices list:

If you own one of these devices, Google Play Services for AR should automatically arrive on your device. You can also side-load the APK on to your phone from trusted sources like APKMirror. Once you do that, you can head to the Play Store and download supported apps.

OnePlus will manufacture its TVs in India by this year end

OnePlus announced two new high-end TV models in India last week dubbed the OnePlus TV Q1 and the Q1 Pro. Both the TV models come with a hefty price tag, with the Q1 starting at Rs 69,900 ($990) and the Q1 Pro at Rs 99,900 ($1414). However, there’s a possibility that these prices might go down slightly by the end of this year. OnePlus has confirmed that it will start manufacturing its new TVs in India by the end of 2019.

OnePlus TV Q1

Currently, OnePlus TVs are manufactured and imported from China which means they are subjected to import taxes. However, once the company starts making these smart TVs in India, we might see some price cuts due to the tax savings as well as changes in labor expenses.

OnePlus also confirmed to 91mobiles that it doesn’t have any plans to make cheaper and affordable OnePlus TV models in the near future. Just like its smartphones, the company will focus on the premium segment of the TV industry to make its mark.

OnePlus TV Remote featured
OnePlus TV Remote has a minimalistic design

The OnePlus TV Q1 & Q1 Pro come with a beautiful 55-inch 4K QLED panel with 120% NTSC color gamut, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and HDR10+. Both models sport 50W speakers but the ‘Pro’ version features a motorized soundbar with six front-facing and two rear-facing speakers.

Redmi 8A launching in China soon states Lu Weibing’s reply to a Weibo post

Apart from China, India is one of the most important markets for Xiaomi. In order to demonstrate a sense of exclusivity to the Indian audience, the company tends to launch several products in the country ahead of other regions. One such example of this statement is the Redmi Note 7 Pro, which made its global debut in India.

Another recently launched smartphone that made its international debut in the country is the budget-oriented, Redmi 8A. However, according to the latest activity of Redmi’s General Manager, Lu Weibing on Weibo, the handset is about to launch in its country of origin as well.

On the 30th of September, a Chinese netizen shared an image of a man on Weibo who is standing in an aeroplane or train aisle to charge his smartphone. The image is accompanied by a question that asks “Can the fast charging revolution solve the dilemma of your smartphone’s battery life?”.

To which the senior Xiaomi official replied that support for fast charging alone cannot provide for a long battery backup. Instead, the handset should also have a large battery, like the 4,500 mAh capacity powerhouse found in the Redmi Note 8 Pro or a 5,000 mAh battery which is seen in our recently launched smartphone.

Clearly, Xiaomi has not launched any smartphone in China recently that packs a 5,000 mAh battery. Therefore, it is assumed that the official is, in fact, talking about the Redmi 8A which was launched in India, earlier this month. Besides, the handset also supports 18 W fast charging via the bottom-mounted USB C port.

All in all, the possibility of this assumption turning out true is very high and the smartphone might be launched in China in the coming weeks.

Shenzhen Transsion holdings might not be a very familiar name for most smartphone users here. So, if this name is not ringing a bell, how about Tecno, Infinix Mobile or iTel? I’m sure many of you may have heard at least one of these brands before and if you didn’t know, they are all owned by Transsion. The company made its debut at the STAR Market (Nasdaq style board for tech stocks by Shanghai stock exchange) earlier today but just before its IPO, Huawei slapped a lawsuit against Transsion in China.

Tecno mobile
Tecno is extremely popular in Africa and is owned by Transsion

Huawei sued Transsion in a local court in Shenzhen China, where both these companies are based. The lawsuit is specifically for IP theft and concerns Transsion and five of its subsidiaries. The local court has reportedly accepted the lawsuit, so we should hear more about this in the coming weeks.

Intellectual Property (IP) Rights are very important for any smartphone company. However, Transsion doesn’t have a lot of patents under its belt. The company reportedly has only 630 patents and 286 computer software copyrights to its name in China, which is minuscule as compared to competitors like Huawei and Xiaomi which have over 100,000 patents individually.

So how did Transsion become the largest smartphone vendor in China with such a small number of patents?

The company basically established its dominance in Africa with extremely cheap smartphones that rely on old technologies like 2G whose patents have expired. Its Tecno, iTel, and Infinix brands all individually rank within the top 5 vendors in the African smartphone market. But as competitors like Xiaomi and Huawei are expanding its presence in the African continent, IP rights are going to be very important for Transsion. Also, Africa is slowly modernizing with technologies like 3G and 4G, which will force Transsion to improve its IPR position in the region.

So a lawsuit from a giant like Huawei won’t be welcomed by the company.

However, this lawsuit hasn’t affected the company’s IPO today. Transsion’s shares opened at RMB 53 ($7.4) which was a strong 50.7% higher than the listing price of RMB 35.15 ($4.93) per share. The company is reportedly valued at around RMB 42.4 billion which comes to around $5.95 billion.
