OnePlus’ Zen Mode published as a standalone app on Google Play Store

One of the software features that made its debut on the OnePlus 7 series is Zen Mode app. The feature is designed to get you to not use your phone for 20 minutes for anything else other than for calls and taking pictures. When activated, you can’t turn it off until the timer ends.OnePlus 7 Zen Mode

The Chinese tech giant has now officially published the Oxygen OS-only Zen Mode as a standalone app on Google Playstore. Don’t be so quick to head over to the play store as the app still is compatible with the OnePlus 7 series models only (OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro). However, publishing it as an independent app on the play store is an indication that the company may be planning to bring support to other OnePlus phones pretty soon.  Already, the OnePlus 6 series was tipped to get Zen Mode support soon. The OnePlus 5/5T were also confirmed to get the software feature.

EDITOR’S PICK: Purported Realme XT Pro specifications leaked revealing a Snapdragon 730G SoC, 64MP main camera

Zen Mode basically gives users a 20-minute break from your smartphone, locking almost all non-essential apps so that you can simply focus on something else. The mode still gives users access to the camera and emergency services, but the mode cannot be deactivated once active. The Play Store version even lets users extend the duration of the app from 20 minutes, 30, 40 and up to 60 minutes. This is, therefore, an updated version of the app. That may even be the essence of publishing the app on Play Store as OnePlus can easily push updates to the app and will also increase update speed.

This app is no doubt a useful one for smartphone addicts and will surely help to curb any bad habits and smartphone overuse.

Xiaomi is developing 4 phones with 108MP rear cameras

When Samsung announced its 108MP sensor, it was done in collaboration with Xiaomi. The ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor is expected to appear first in a Xiaomi phone soon, which some folks believe is the upcoming Mi MIX 4 flagship. However, new findings have revealed Xiaomi is working on at least four phones with a 108MP sensor.

Samsung ISOCELL 108MP

The source of these new findings is XDA-Developers who found evidence of these unreleased phones in the MIUI Callery App. According to them, the MIUI Gallery App has added support for viewing 108MP photos in full resolution. The app specifically lists the feature is supported by four devices codenamed “tucana”, “draco”, “umi” and “cmi”. Any of these devices may actually launch under the Xiaomi and Redmi brand. However, XDA-Developers, report that none of these devices is the Mi MIX 4.

The specs of these devices are currently unknown at the moment and it is also not known if they will be launching soon. There are still four months to go before the end of the year and we are pretty sure Xiaomi and Redmi are not done announcing new devices.

The sensor powering these phones should be the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX as no other camera manufacturer has announced a 108MP sensor. The Mi MIX 4 is expected to be the first phone with a 108MP sensor but there is still no evidence of that.

Lenovo K10 Note live photos leaked, Flipkart reveals specs

The Lenovo K10 Note is one of three Lenovo phones launching this week in India. The other two are the flagship Z6 Pro and the mid-range A6 Note. Flipkart already revealed most details about the A6 Note yesterday. Now, a couple of live photos of the K10 Note has surfaced and a Flipkart product page has also revealed its specs.

The source of the leak is a tech blog, Pulse91. The live photos show the Lenovo K10 Note and Lenovo A6 Note have a similar design. The K10 Note also has a notch in its display but its more like a waterdrop unlike that of the A6 Note which is U-shaped. It also has its rear cameras arranged vertically, though there are three sensors this time. The Lenovo K10 Note is also shown to have a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

One of the images shows the “About phone” menu located under the phone’s settings menu. It confirms the device is indeed the Lenovo K10 Note and that its model number is “L38111”. It also reveals the phone is powered by a Snapdragon 710 processor. Thanks to the model number and the Flipkart page, we can confirm that the Lenovo K10 Note is just a rebranded Lenovo Z6 Youth Edition.

Lenovo K10 Note features

The Lenovo K10 Note has a 6.3-inch waterdrop display with an FHD+ resolution, a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and a screen-to-body ratio over 90%.

The processor is indeed the Snapdragon 710 but there is no mention of the RAM and storage capacity. Based on the Z6 Youth, the K10 Note should have 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage.

Inside the notch is a 16MP camera with bokeh effect and a beauty mode. The back of the phone is home to a 16MP triple camera setup which includes a primary 16MP f/1.8 sensor paired with an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom, and a 5MP f/2.2 camera for Super Bokeh Effect. The phone also has a Super Night Mode for clear and bright images in low-light. Below the cameras is an LED flash.

Lenovo K10 Note cameras

The Lenovo K10 Note will also have a 4050mAh battery which Lenovo claims should last 324 hours on standby and provide up to 31 hours of talk time or 16 hours of video playback or up to 13 hours of gameplay. Since it is the same device as the Z6 Youth Edition, it should support 15W fast charging too.

Other features of the Lenovo K10 Note are 3.5mm audio jack, Dolby Atmos, and a Game Mode. It should run Android 9 Pie out of the box. The phone will be available in Knight Black and Stardust Blue.

There is a regular Lenovo K10 but that is not among the devices launching in India. The Lenovo K10 has the same model number as the Moto E6, so the specs should be the same too.

Huawei’s Smart Screen could be heading out of China, IFA 2019 reveal?

Huawei launched its new Honor Vision smart screen in China with much fanfare early last month. It was also the first device to feature the company’s self-developed HarmonyOS. While the initial release was limited to China, it looks like Huawei has plans to release its smart screens internationally as well.

Honor Smart Screen Bluetooth SIG
Source: Bluetooth SIG Website

Five Huawei smart screens (HEGE, OSCA-550, OSCA-550A, OSCA-550X, and OSCA-550AX) were recently spotted on the Bluetooth SIG website. Usually, products that come up on Bluetooth SIG don’t take long to launch in the market. Considering this, we can speculate that Huawei is planning to launch the Honor Vision or at least new Honor Vision like smart screen devices internationally pretty soon.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei P30 could get new color options at IFA 2019 this month

Bluetooth SIG confirms that these smart screen devices are running EMUI HomeVision 9.0.0.13. We are unsure whether this is a UI on top of HarmonyOS or Android. But given how Honor’s first smart screen was called the Honor Vision (see the similarity with HomeVision OS?), it’s possible that these are the international variants of the product.

It’s likely that we’ll get the see these newly certified Honor smart screen models at IFA  2019 that kicks off on September 6 at Berlin. If you recall, Huawei has an event scheduled on the same day at 4:30 PM local time. Alongside the launch of the new Kirin 990 chipset, we could also hear more about Huawei Honor Vision’s international release.

OPPO reveals pricing for OPPO ENCO Q1 wireless earphones on Weibo

Earlier this week, saw OPPO officially launch the ENCO Q1 wireless earphones. They’re the latest and the first pair of headphones in their new line of noise-canceling headphones. Last time, we discussed how the OPPO ENCO Q1 won’t likely be cheap seeing how dual ANC technology is pretty expensive. Today, we’ve got our answer from Oppo’s Weibo page.

The company states in their Weibo post that the new ENCO Q1’s will cost 599 yuan in China, which puts it roughly at $84 a pair. This isn’t actually too bad, placing it only slightly above the average price point for a pair of dual active noise cancelling headphones. On top of that, Oppo has a pedigree of excellence when it comes to audio products, so the quality should be very good too.

The OPPO ENCO Q1 headphone uses a 3D neckband design that’s thick at the end and thin at the center. It uses a one-piece design without any cuts or splits. The Q1 headphones will feature dual Active Noise Cancellation with 4 Mics. In simple terms it means that OPPO is using a hybrid noise cancellation technology on its new model, featuring both a feedforward and feedback ANC. There are three colors available: Black, White, and Orange.

The OPPPO ENCO Q1 will officially go on sale on the 10th of September 2019, which is a few days from now. We’re eager to see whether they’ll live up to the expectations we have for them.

The device is also expected to pack a large-capacity battery, possibly retain the 5,000mAh capacity battery of the Red Magic 3. As for the design, we expect the company to have an air cooling system and given that the phone is an offshoot of the Red Magic 3, the device is expected to continue with the heat dissipation design.

The Nubia Red Magic 3 features the industry’s first cooling fan inside which doesn’t use any physical bearings and is made out of nanomaterials. The company says that the fan runs at 14K RPM and consumes very little power. It is also supported by a liquid-cooled copper tube to keep the temperature inside cooler.

To know more about this gaming smartphone, including its full set of specifications and the pricing as well as availability details, we’ll have to wait for the company to officially launch the device on 5th September.

Redmi Note 8 vs Honor 9X vs Oppo Reno2 F: Specs Comparison

Every year a new phone from the Redmi Note series is official and every year it is a success. Will it be the same with the Redmi Note 8 released a few days ago alongside its Pro version? It is hard to tell now, there is a lot of internal and external concurrence this year and the midrange sector is very fragmented. You can find very different devices in the price range which goes from €100 to €300 (or dollars): some of them come with well-balanced specifications, other with a flagship-class feature (such as the camera department) and other below-average specifications. Here, you will learn which kind of devices Redmi Note 8, Honor 9X and Oppo Reno2 F are and (we hope so) you will understand which one fits your needs the most.

Design

If you are looking for a phone which will surprise your friends as soon as they see it, you should not go for the Redmi Note 8. Go for the Oppo Reno2 F which comes with the most premium build quality, the highest screen-to-body ratio and the best attention to details. It sports a pop-up camera and very narrow bezels around the display, as well as an amazing glass back and an in-display fingerprint reader. Honor 9X is not at the same level, but it is still a very cool device with its pop-up camera and the side-mounted fingerprint scanner making the rear side cleaner and more suggestive.

Display

AMOLED displays are currently a trend because of their very deep blacks and their incredibly brilliant colors. And they are actually the only displays with UD fingerprint scanners. Oppo Reno2 F is the only device in this trio to be equipped with an AMOLED panel, so it is more suitable for most of the potential buyers out there. The second place goes to the Honor 9X and its notch-less LTPS panel with the widest diagonal (6.59 inches).

Specs & Software

Huawei released a very powerful chipset for its 2019 mid-rangers: the Kirin 810. It is the first mid-range SoC to be built at just 7 nm, so it is very performing but also very efficient. Unfortunately, the Honor 9X does not have up to 8 GB of RAM like the Reno2 F, but the chipset is way better so it wins the hardware comparison. And Oppo Reno2 F does not even take the second place, given that the Redmi Note 8 is equipped with a more powerful Snapdragon 665 SoC by Qualcomm. Each device supports a micro SD to expand the internal storage and has a customized Android 9 Pie fork out of the box.

Camera

Cameras are the strongest point of the Oppo Reno2 F. It is one of the few mid-rangers out there to boast OIS for an amazing stabilization. And it even has an interesting B/W sensor for portraits, besides the classic depth sensor and an additional ultrawide lens. Further, the Oppo Reno2 F is the only to sport a front-facing LED flash and HDR for the front camera. Redmi Note 8 Pro comes right after with a 48 MP quad-camera including a dedicated macro sensor, an ultrawide lens, and a depth sensor.

Battery

In each case, you get a 4000 mAh battery, but given that we did not test the Oppo Reno2 F thoroughly, we still can not give a definitive opinion. Judging from the specs on the paper, the efficient Kirin 810 should make the Honor 9X last more on a single charge.

Price

Redmi Note 8 is definitely the best value for money phone as it starts from just €130/$142, but it is not the most advanced phone of this comparison. The award goes to Oppo Reno2 F as it sports a better rear camera, a better display, a better design, and a more advanced memory configuration. Unfortunately, we still do not know how much it will cost. Honor 9X starts from €180/$198 and at the end of the day, it offers better performances, display, and looks than Redmi Note 8, but it has inferior rear cameras.

Huawei announces Mate 30 series launches September 19 in Munich

It is official, the Huawei Mate 30 series will be launching this month, not at IFA 2019, but at a special event in Munich, Germany on September 19.

The announcement was made today on Twitter by the official Huawei Mobile account. The tweet includes a tease of the new circular camera housing or Oreo camera has some have come to term the design.

Last week, a leaked poster revealed the Huawei Mate 30 series will come with quad rear cameras in a circular housing with a huge bump. That bump is said to be as a result of smart cases which will bring additional features to the phone. We talked about the cases here which we think will not be limited to the Mate 30 series but also other Huawei phones and Honor phones too.

The Huawei Mate 30/30 Pro will feature cameras co-developed with Leica, two of which are 40MP sensors. It will also have triple cameras in front housed inside a notch, an in-display fingerprint scanner, a Kirin 990 processor, and an IR sensor. It will also have a display that curves to the sides at an angle close to 90°. Huawei also recently received certification for a new wireless charger that can charge at 25W.

However, while the Huawei Mate 30 series will be announced in Europe first, it may actually not be available for purchase outside China for a while as Google as said the manufacturer isn’t licensed to launch the phones with official Android and Google Play services due to the trade ban.
