Huawei is key to the astronomic growth of the 5G phone market next year: Strategy Analytics

The year 2020 is expected to be the year of 5G ahead of foldable smartphones. Research firm, Strategy Analytics have predicted that global sales of 5G phone will hit 160 million units next year but that is dependent on its rollout in China. In other words, China will play a major role in the proliferation of 5G phones.

The report also says Huawei is in the best position to capture the majority of China’s 5G smartphone sales. This strategic position of Huawei could even be used to regain its global smartphone standing which has received severe pummelling from the US government.

Ken Hyers, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “As China goes, so goes the 5G ambitions of chip-makers Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Unisoc, all of whom have been applauding the rapid rise in the number of 5G models licensed in recent months.”

Ville Petteri-Ukonaho, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “Significantly, China holds the key to 5G volumes in 2020. The winner in China will have huge leverage for driving down the learning curve of 5G devices.”

EDITOR’S PICK: Samsung unveils Galaxy A50s and Galaxy A30s

David Kerr, Senior Vice President at Strategy Analytics, added, “Samsung is the undisputed global 5G leader, but currently has just a 1% share of the Chinese smartphone market. China is expected to be the largest 5G smartphone market, with 5G phone sales potentially hitting 80 million in 2020. Huawei has recently accelerated and intensified its efforts in its home market to counter international uncertainty. By Q2 2019 it had expanded its smartphone market share there to almost 40%, far outpacing all other competitors. It is well-positioned to leverage that dominant position to take a commanding lead in China’s 5G smartphone market in 2020 and beyond.”

Kerr continued, “If China meets its aggressive targets, Huawei could cut deeply into Samsung’s 5G leadership, positioning it for recovery and growth in Western Europe and other global markets.”

Xiaomi Mi A-series models are the top-selling Android One phones globally

Xiaomi took an important step towards cementing its place in the global market when it launched the Mi A1 in 2017. What made the new A-series stand out was the pure Android operating system that it had onboard. Since then, Xiaomi has gone on to launch the Mi A2 and A3, all under Google’s Android One project. It has now emerged that the Mi branded models are an important part of the Android One project. In two years after its launch, the A series has achieved outstanding results.Xiaomi Mi A1

During the Mi A3 launch, the company shared some data on the progress of the A-series. Data by market research firm Canalys shows that the sales volume of the Mi A1 in 2017 was 2.4 times more than those of other Android One handsets. In the same light, the Mi A2 sales when it was launched in 2018 was still far ahead of other Android One phones like the Nokia 3.1, Nokia 6.2 and Motorola One series. On the whole, the company says it has sold over 10 million units of the Mi A series.

Xiaomi Mi A2

We expect the Mi A3 to equally be a successful Android One phone even though it packs a disappointing HD+ display.  Apart from delivering a native Android operating system, Googe’s Android One project also brings the latest software update and on time.

Samsung unveils Galaxy A50s and Galaxy A30s

Samsung already launched over 10 Galaxy A-series smartphones this year but it is not done yet. Today, it has announced the Galaxy A50s and Galaxy A30s smartphones, slight upgrades to the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30 which were released this year.

Samsung Galaxy A50s

Galaxy A50s

The Galaxy A50s keeps the 6.4-inch Infinity-U Super AMOLED display of the Galaxy A50 including the in-display fingerprint scanner. However, the selfie camera has now been upgraded from 25MP to 32MP but still has an f/2.0 aperture.

It also keeps the Exynos 9610 processor along with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The triple rear cameras is now a 48MP + 8MP ultrawide + 5MP depth combo.

Galaxy A50s featured

The Galaxy A50s features a redesigned back slightly similar to the diamond-back design of the Realme 1. There is a 4000mAh battery under the hood along with 15W fast charging. The phone’s dimensions are the same as that of the Galaxy A50 but it weighs a little more at 169 grams.

It comes in Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White, Prism Crush Violet, and Prism Crush Green.

Galaxy A30s

Galaxy A30s

The Galaxy A30s also keeps the 6.4-inch AMOLED display of the Galaxy A30 but the resolution has been reduced from FHD+ to HD+ (1560 x 720) and the display type is Infinity-V and not Infinity-U. While the downgrade in resolution is a bummer, there is now an in-display fingerprint scanner underneath the screen.

There is an Exynos 7904 processor under the hood paired with 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of storage with MicroSD card support.

There is a 16MP f/2.0 selfie camera just like the Galaxy A30 but the back is now home to triple rear cameras – a 25MP f/1.7 primary sensor, an 8MP ultrawide sensor, and a 5MP depth sensor. There is a 4000mAh battery with support for 15W fast charging.

The Galaxy A30s will also be available in Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White, Prism Crush Violet, and Prism Crush Green. However, just like the A50s, the price and availability of the Galaxy A30s have not yet been revealed.

Redmi Note 8 promo posters highlight camera upgrades

The Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro are shaping up to be really interesting devices. Some features have been confirmed such as the processor which is the new MediaTek Helio G90T. We also know the primary rear camera is a 64MP sensor paired with three other cameras.

Today, Redmi has released some promotional materials that highlight the camera prowess of the phones.

[envira-gallery id=”271605″]

The first poster shows a cross-section of the phones’ rear cameras sensors. While the focus is on only three, we can see there is a fourth sensor to the right of the triple camera setup. This fourth sensor is rumored to be a ToF sensor.

The caption for this poster talks about how the cameras on phones have greatly improved in the last two decades. Back in 1999, phones had a single camera that could only take 0.1MP photos. Twenty years later, phones have four rear cameras and can shoot 64MP photos.

Another poster talks about the ultra-clear image quality of the 64MP sensor. The camera sensor is said to have a very high detail such that you can zoom in up to 25 times and still have a clear image.

The last promo poster mentions the 64MP primary camera’s resolution – 9248 x 6936, which is nearly double 8K resolution, 7.7 times that of 4K UHD, and 25 times the resolution of 1080p FHD.

The Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro will be announced on August 29 in China alongside the 70-inch Redmi TV.

Japan’s NTT Docomo Inc resumes orders for Huawei devices

NTT Docomo Inc, Japan’s largest telecom carrier by users, is resuming orders from Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, as the Chinese telecom giant is securing key support from the big three telecom operators in Japan despite US restrictions. The telco has restarted taking orders for Huawei’s high-end P30 Pro smartphone, which will be on sale in September.

This is pretty big news for Huawei in Japan, and it’s a big step towards regaining their position. In May, Japan’s leading carriers SoftBank, KDDI, and NTT Docomo said they were suspending sales of Huawei products without giving further details. The decision came soon after the Chinese giant rolled out its flagship P30 models in the country.

With the move, the three major telecom operators in Japan, with other two being SoftBank Corp and KDDI Corp, have all restarted sales of Huawei’s products, after they delayed the launch in May. Even Japanese e-commerce behemoth Rakuten Inc.’s mobile unit has been offering the phones from Aug. 5 after delaying the planned launch from May.

The Docomo announcement came after the US Commerce Department gave Huawei another 90-day reprieve allowing suppliers to sell to the company on Monday. Huawei reported sales in the six months through June rose 23.2 percent over a year earlier. Its chairman, Liang Hua, said in July that Huawei was reviewing its core products to make sure they all could be delivered to customers without American components.

MediaTek believes China will grab more than 70% of global 5G smartphone sales in 2020

5G is the next big revolution in technology and everyone wants a big chunk of its market share. But looks like China is going to take the lead in 2020 as chip maker MediaTek believes that the Chinese market could grab more than 70% of the global 5G smartphone sales next year.

Huawei Mate 20 X 5G
Mate 20 X comes with new-age 5G support

MediaTek’s CEO Rick Tsai said that global 5G sales are expected to be about 140 million in 2020. Out of this, nearly 70% will be sold in the Chinese market, coming close to 100 million units. This is quite an optimistic forecast from MediaTek given that Strategy Analytics’ report predicts smartphone sales in China to hit just 80 million next year. Still, it’s clear that both of them believe that China will be the largest 5G market in 2020.

MediaTek is currently expected to mass-produce its new 5G chipset in the second half of the year. The company could benefit from Huawei if it manages to strike a deal with the telecommunications giant. Earlier reports indicate that MediaTek is looking to supply low-end 5G chipsets for Huawei’s less expensive smartphones.

MIUI 10 developer updates to cease on August 30, hints at MIUI 11′ arrival

The release date for MIUI 11 is still unknown but the day might be closer than we think. Today, the official MIUI account announced that the last MIUI 10 developer update will be released on August 30.

The official announcement revealed that there have been a total of 428 weekly updates since the first beta release back on August 16, 2010. The weekly updates bring new features and optimizations to each phone that is still supported.

MIUI 10 beta update

According to the post, the last MIUI 10 developer update will arrive as version 9.8.29 and will be released on August 30.

MIUI 10 has brought a number of very useful features to Xiaomi phones and most of them have been based on AI. From Xiaomi’s Little Ants voice assistant to its AI bokeh effect that allowed phones with a single camera to take portrait photos to auto-detection of smart home appliances.

MIUI 11 is expected to bring more AI-based features. One of them leaked earlier this week, loosely translated to “Inter-finger call”, this feature allows the AI assistant to answer calls on behalf of the user. The conversation is transcribed for the user and suggested replies are presented. The user just has to select one of the replies and the assistant relays it to the caller by voice. The feature can be called Xiaomi’s take on Google Duplex. Unfortunately, this feature will most only be available in China.

But Huami being a wearable focused brand is using all its resources to take its smartwatches to a new level. The company confirmed today that it has worked with the screen maker JDI to develop the display for the upcoming square Amazfit smartwatch.

EMUI 10 beta update confirmed to start rolling out from September 8

At the Huawei Developers Conference 2019 in China earlier this month, the company announced few of its products, including the latest version of its EMUI custom Android interfaced — EMUI 10.

While making the announcement, the company confirmed that the update will be first rolled out to the Huawei P30 smartphone series and will later roll out to other compatible devices. The company also said that the stable version will roll out with the upcoming flagships, i.e. Huawei Mate 30 series smartphones.

Now, sharing an image on the official Weibo account of EMUI, Huawei has confirmed that the EMUI 10 beta version will be rolled out to Huawei P30 and P30 Pro smartphones from 8th September.

EMUI 10 Beta Rollout Date Official

Later, in the same month of September, the beta update will start rolling out to Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20 X, Mate RS Porsche Design, Honor 20, Honor 20 Pro, Honor V20, and Honor Magic 2.

The company has officially revealed that both the custom interfaces — EMUI 10 and Magic UI 3.0 for Honor lineup, are based on the upcoming Android Q operating system. The company is currently in the process of adopting the system for other models.

The EMUI 10 has adopted a new design philosophy and thus will come with a redesigned user interface. The new UI will come with smoother animations and will offer better performance when playing videos and games, along with support for video ringtones.

Since the newer version is based on Android Q, we expect the company to make use of several interesting features of the upcoming major Android release such as notification bubbles, sharing shortcuts, and new privacy controls. We are also expecting new AI-related features focused on performance, gaming, and fluidity.

EMUI 10 is confirmed to come with features like system-wide dark mode which even forces apps that don’t have a dark mode to comply. The system settings are better organized in this new version and the operating system is designed to offer a better experience when working other devices like a Windows 10 device.

Huawei says it has no plans to launch HarmonyOS-powered smartphone this year

At the Huawei Developers Conference 2019 earlier this month in China, the Chinese giant finally announced HarmonyOS, its homegrown operating system. This is the same OS that was in the news as HongMeng OS, the Chinese name for the HarmonyOS.

This in-house developed operating system from Huawei was touted to replace the Android mobile operating system for its smartphones. But, the company has now said that it has no plans to launch a HarmonyOS-powered smartphone this year and it wants to maintain a single ecosystem and stick with Google’s platform.

HarmonyOS

Huawei Senior Vice President Vincent Yang said that the company wants to maintain one standard and one ecosystem. He also added that Harmony would serve as an option B for the company, in case it cannot use Android.

He also hinted that the company’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, will be running Android operating system out-of-the-box. However, if the US government enforces the ban, Huawei would switch to Harmony on its phones, but that move wouldn’t happen until the last minute when the company would be shut out from Android.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Huawei will be launching a new budget smartphone in China by the end of this year which will be powered by the newly announced HarmonyOS or the HongMeng OS as it is called in China. The phone, expected to Mate 30 Lite, was reported to be priced around 2,000 Yuan (roughly $288). However, it now seems that the phone is not getting launched this year.

This is not shocking at all and we can understand why Huawei is reluctant to commit to HarmonyOS as a mobile operating system. The software has just debuted earlier this month and there’s virtually no app support. Earlier, the company had said that the platform is cleaner than Android and has far fewer lines of codes, and is meant to power other smart products like cars, televisions, and smartwatches.

Honor 20 SE poster leak reveals that the smartphone is launching next month

A poster of the upcoming Honor smartphone has been spotted in China which reveals that the company will soon launch the Honor 20 SE smartphone. Here, the Honor 20 SE refers to the Honor 20 Youth Edition, which is a lighter variant of the Honor 20.

Recently, it was revealed that the Honor 20 SE is a global variant of the Huawei Nova 5T smartphone, which is all set to get launched on 25th August. However, there have been some conflicting reports about the Nova 5T, so we’ll have to wait for the official launch event to know for sure.

Honor 20 SE Poster Leak

The poster was spotted at an offline store of Suning Tesco and suggested that the device will be launched next month, i.e. September 2019. Further, it also mentions that the phone can be pre-ordered with a deposit of 99 Yuan, roughly $14.

Last week, an Android Enterprise listing of a smartphone called Huawei Nova 5T was spotted. The image of the phone on Android Enterprise listing had revealed that it features a display with a punch-hole at its top-left corner.

On the specs front, it was revealed through Android Enterprise listing that Nova 5T has a 5.5-inch display and the smartphone runs Android 9 Pie operating system out-of-the-box, likely with EMUI 9.1 on top.

The smartphone is equipped with 8GB of RAM and it has 128GB and 256GB internal storage options. The image of the phone had further revealed that there is indentation on the right side of the phone, which could be a side-mounted fingerprint reader. The phone is also said to come with NFC support as well as 20W fast charging.

However, it remains to be seen if the upcoming Honor 20 SE is indeed a global variant of the Nova 5T or not. To know for sure, we’ll have to wait for the Chinese company to officially launch the smartphone, which should happen in the coming weeks.

Oppo VP shows off video stabilisation on the upcoming Oppo Reno 2

After launching its all-new Oppo Reno lineup for smartphones earlier this year, the company is now gearing up for its successor. Oppo has already confirmed that it will be launching the Oppo Reno 2 series smartphones in the Indian market on 28th August.

Today, Oppo’s Vice President Shen Yiren shared a video from the Oppo Reno 2 in which he is comparing the video stabilization feature or the anti-shake effect with other smartphone models. He said that “it was filmed without any stabilizer assistive devices.”

In the video clip, we can see that the output from the upcoming Reno 2, which is on the right side, is much better than the device on the left side in terms of video stability. From this, it seems that the primary lens on the Oppo Reno 2 will come with optical image stabilization (OIS).

Oppo Reno 2 Video Stability

Yesterday, in a media statement, the company revealed some of the key specifications of the Oppo Reno 2. It revealed that the phone will feature a 6.55-inch Full HD+ AMOLED Panoramic display with a 20:9 aspect ratio and 93.1 percent screen-to-body ratio. It will also come with an under-display fingerprint sensor for added security.

While the phone’s front panel will be protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass 6, the back panel will be protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Under the hood, the device will be powered by the Snapdragon 730G octa-core processor.

The phone will pack 8GB of RAM and will come with 256GB of internal storage. Focusing on the gaming side, the company will be offering anti-cheat extensions, 25 percent better graphic processing, HDR10 Gaming support, and Game Assistant, among others.

The company has also revealed that the device will be powered by a 4,000mAh battery which will come with 20W VOOC 3.0 fast-charging support and USB Type-C port for connectivity. Other features announced by the company include Frame Boost 2.0, Touch Boost 2.0, and Link Boost.

Oppo has not shared details about the smartphone’s camera configuration, which seems to be the highlight of the device. In a teaser image shared by the company, it shows that the smartphone will have quad-camera setup on the back and on the front side, it will continue to offer shark-fin design for the pop-up mechanism.

As per the leaks, the Reno 2 will feature Samsung‘s 48MP primary sensor paired with a 13MP telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom, an 8MP ultrawide sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor. A 16MP sensor will be present on the front for taking selfies and video calling.

To know for sure which devices are up the company’s sleeves for the Reno 2 series, as well as their pricing and availability details, we’ll have to wait for the official launch event, which is happening next week in India.
