Huawei Mate X Release reportedly delayed to the end of 2019

Samsung Galaxy Fold’s recall is a very good example of why making foldables is not an easy task. Huawei was expected to beat Samsung to become the first top-tier company to release a commercial foldable smartphone in the market. However, according to a new report, that likely won’t happen as the Huawei Mate X foldable launch is said to be delayed till November 2019.

huawei MAte x outfold

Huawei Mate X has been one of the favorite foldables in the market especially because of its out-fold design. However, TechRadar learned at a Huawei press event in Shenzhen today that the company won’t be able to honor the earlier mentioned September release date. In fact, it is very unlikely that we would see the phone launch before November this year. The exact reason for the delay is not mentioned but it could be anything from production complications, additional testing, or even supplier issues due to the ongoing trade war.

However, the report states that the company is confident that the Mate X will be announced before the end of 2019. This time frame could be to ensure that the phone is available to purchase for the holiday season before the Chinese New Year, which kicks off early next year.

Editor’s Pick: 10 Things You Should Know About Huawei’s HarmonyOS

The report also adds that the company is planning an even better design for the next generation Mate X model. The new generation Mate X could launch as early as next year and could swap out the rear steel back for a glass-covered touch-enabled display. That would mean that the next generation Mate X could feature an all-display design with only a few bits of non-display elements.

MAte X was earlier spotted in the hands of Huawei exec Richard Yu

However, it remains to be seen how the company plans to implement a glass design on a foldable smartphone. If you recall, the front display of the existing Mate X still features a plastic covering, mainly because plastic is flexible. So in order for the company to use a glass back with a display, it would have to make the glass foldable and it won’t be easy to make it mass production-friendly.

RELATED: Huawei to announce Google Maps rival called Map Kit in October

Another question is the durability of a glass-covered back instead of the current steel back. Techradar’s report mentioned that the company’s attempt to replace the current generation Mate X’s steel back with a lighter aluminum body failed as it wasn’t strong enough. So, it remains to be seen how Huawei plans to make a glass-covered design possible on the next-generation version.

The final version of the Mate X is said to come with a slimmer power button and an improved ‘Falcon-hinge’. Unfortunately, if you want to be an early adopter you will have to go for the Galaxy Fold because it will be available a couple of months before the Mate X.

Amazon leads the Smart Speakers market in Q2 2019: Strategy Analytics

Market research file Strategy Analytics has published a new report related to the global sales of smart speakers. It shows that the market keeps on growing and the sales of smart speakers reached 30.3 million units in Q2 2019.

Amazon continues dominating the market with 21.9 percent market share even though the company’s market share reduced from 29.1 percent in Q2 2018. The second and third position has been grabbed by Google and Baidu, followed by Alibaba and Xiaomi.

Global Smart Speaker Market Share

Even though Apple’s market share for the smart speakers increased 81 percent compared to the previous year, it has not yet captured significant market share and thus, it remains in the sixth place with 1.4 million units shipped.

Amazon managed to ship 6.6 million units while Google shipped 5.6 million units. On the other hand, China-based companies Baidu, Alibaba, and Xiaomi managed to ship 4.7 million, 4.3 million, and 3.4 million units respectively.

David Mercer, Vice President at Strategy Analytics said that the demand for smart speakers have shown a little sign of plateauing, even in more mature markets like the US where ownership has now reached 30% of households.

However, he adds that there’s a huge potential in untapped regions where local language support has been limited. He believes that the arrival of language localized devices in large markets like Russia, Mexico and Brazil will support further demand growth in the coming months and years.

Huawei’s super fast 30W Wireless Charger has just passed FCC

Yesterday we reported that Huawei Mate 30 series was likely going to feature support for ultra-fast 25W wireless charging. Today, Huawei’s new wireless charger (CP61) capable of delivering such high-speed charging has just been spotted on FCC. The certification website confirms that the upcoming Huawei wireless charger can support charging output up to 30W.

While 30W is even higher than what we reported yesterday, it looks like the actual charging speed could be less than the max speed mentioned in the document. The FCC listing reveals that the charger’s claimed 30W charging output has not complied to its tests. So, it is possible that the actual wireless charging speed is somewhere around 25W, which is what a Chinese blogger revealed yesterday.

Now, ahead of the phone’s launch next week, the company has teased a new feature of this upcoming smartphone on its official Weibo account. The company has confirmed that the phone will come with Hi-Fi Audio support which the company has named “Cool Me Music” feature that offers an impressive sound quality.

Vivo iQOO Pro 5G

As the name itself suggests, the phone will be an enhanced variant of the Vivo iQOO gaming smartphone that was launched in April this year. While most of the specs in this upcoming phone remain the same, it comes with some upgraded features.

The company has already confirmed that the iQOO Pro 5G will be powered by the newly launched Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus octa-core processor and will be the first smartphone with SD855+ SoC to have 5G connectivity. The ASUS ROG Phone 2 and Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro are already running SD855+ chipset but don’t have 5G support.

The Chinese firm has also confirmed that it will be arriving with the latest UFS 3.0 storage and LPDDR4X RAM, and will also carry support for the F2FS file format. The phone has already been certified by 3C and TENAA in China, revealing its specifications.

Vivo NEX 3 sketch reveals front and rear design

The Vivo NEX 3 is the upcoming flagship phone from Vivo. Vivo’s Product Manager Li Xiang had yesterday shared an image of the frontal panel of the Vivo NEX 3 smartphone yesterday. It revealed that the display will be curved towards the left and right edges. Today, Li Xiang has released a sketch of the Vivo NEX 3 to showcase its front and rear design.

As it can be seen in the image, the dual-edge display of the Vivo NEX 3 is extremely on the edges. The sketch reveals that the bending portion of the screen appears like a waterfall. Hence, this display design is being dubbed as ‘waterfall display.’ The side bezels seem to be almost non-existent.

The sketch also shows that the top and bottom bezels of the phone are also extremely thin. This indicates that the Vivo NEX 3 will deliver close to 100 percent screen-to-body ratio. The bottom edge of the phone is not visible in the sketch. The upper edge of the phone seems to be equipped with a 3.5mm audio jack, a speaker and a microphone. The left and right sides of the phone appear to be barren. Probably, the phone could be lacking physical buttons.

Vivo NEX 3 sketch

Since the top bezel of the phone very thin and even the body of the phone appears to be quite slim, it may not feature a pop-up selfie snapper. Rather the company may use the new in-display selfie camera technology. Even when the phone is placed upside down, its side displays are clearly visible.

The only thing that is present on the backside of the smartphone is the triple camera setup that is placed inside a circular housing. The design of the camera housing is inspired from mechanical watches.

The specifications of the Vivo NEX 3 are currently under the wraps. However, it is very likely to feature Snapdragon 855+ chipset. Also, it is believed that the Vivo V1924A smartphone that was recently approved by 3C authority could be the NEX smartphone. The 3C certification revealed that it carries support for 5G connectivity, and it could be arriving with a 44W rapid charger. The Vivo V9122A could be the 4G LTE version of the smartphone. There is no information available on the launch date of the Vivo NEX 3. Also, the name of the device is not officially confirmed yet.

WhatsApp beta for Android adds fingerprint authentication

WhatsApp always remains a step ahead in providing new features to its users. The developers have extended numerous features on WhatsApp to facilitate users’ security, accessibility, and enhance ease-of-use on the app. In a similar move, Whatsapp has recently added fingerprint authentication feature on the WhatsApp Beta version for Android.

To get the latest feature, the user needs to update their WhatsApp Beta to version 2.19.221. The user can head over to the Settings > Account > Privacy > Fingerprint lock to enable the new authentication feature. It carries the option to select the frequency of the authentication prompt to appear after 30 minutes, 1 minute or immediately. If you choose “immediately” option, then the app will ask for the authentication after inactiveness of WhatsApp for a short period.

The ability to select frequency depends on a server-side switch, and it won’t come to all the phones with just an app update. The new unlock feature will prompt only while opening the app. Otherwise, users can generally pick up the voice and video calls. It even won’t snap-in while replying to a message from the notification bar itself.

The new authentication also affects the WhatsApp Widget. It won’t show any information if you’ve activated the fingerprint unlock. However, the WhatsApp official Android biometric authentication APIs ensures the safety of our fingerprint data and it isn’t sent to Facebook.

Moreover, WhatsApp is also working on the Dark Mode to save your eyes from the strain caused by the light colors. We are unsure about when the new Fingerprint Unlock feature will roll out on the stable version.

Xiaomi’s new crowdfunder is a sonic toothbrush for children

Xiaomi‘s crowdfunders are always very interesting, and the same applies to their latest crowdfunding product, a children’s sonic electric toothbrush. The brand new Children’s Sonic Toothbrush K5 from Xiaomi’s home appliance startup Soocas is a sonic electric toothbrush made specifically to encourage young children to learn better brushing habits.

How the toothbrush works is that it comes with a bear shaped speaker as a base. Whenever a child removes the toothbrush from the base, the bear speaker begins to tell them a story. This story goes on for aboout 2 minutes, which is allegedly just long enough for the child to completely brush their teeth thoroughly.

As for specifications, the K5 comes equipped with a GMSoft sonic motor. The motor vibrates 31,000 times a minute and is especially gentle as to not damage the child’s teeth or gums. The toothbrush can also adapt to the amount of pressure being applied by the child and adjust the strength of the vibrations to avoid hurting the child’s mouth.

The K5 comes with 2 types of brush heads, one for 3 – 6 year olds and another for 6 – 12 year olds. The bristles on both brush heads are soft and super fine at a 0.01mm, allowing them to clean deep between the child’s teeth. The battery life is also pretty good. Soocas claims the toothbrush can go last one month on a full charge, granted that the toothbrush is used only twice a day.

As you’d expect, the toothbrush is completely water resistant, and it also connects with Xiaomi’s Mijia app to track your child’s brushing habits. The current crowdfunding price is set at 219 yuan, or about $32. It’s not a bad option for a children’s toothbrush, at least as far as the specs and features go.
