10 Things You Should Know About Huawei’s HarmonyOS

Huawei unveiled the Harmony OS with much fanfare at the Huawei Developer Conference (2019) earlier today. The OS is primarily targeted at IoT products and is the company’s back up plan if it no longer can use Android on its smartphones. Huawei was careful NOT to directly market it as a replacement to Android but it did stress that it would use Harmony OS as its last resort for its smartphones.

HarmonyOS featured

Building a new OS from scratch is never easy and time and again we’ve seen examples of companies failing to gain traction from developers for a brand new OS. However, Huawei wants to take things slow and steady, starting with IoT products like the new Huawei Smart Screen that’s going to be unveiled tomorrow.

There’s a lot of stuff that was revealed about the OS at the event today, so we decided to compile 10 things you should know about Harmony OS so that you are updated about its most important features.

11. Harmony OS development began back in 2017

Huawei started working on the HarmonyOS as early as 2017. The company decided to speed things up in 2019 to power its smart screen products this year. The v1.0 will initially target smart display products, such as the Huawei Smart Screen to be unveiled tomorrow. In 2020, microkernel v2.0 will be released and subsequently, in 2021, the v3.0 will be available with added support for wearables.

The HarmonyOS v1.0 will still feature a Linux kernel alongside its own microkernel, but future versions, starting v2.0 will be completely based on its microkernel.

22. Huawei’s HarmonyOS is based on a light Microkernel unlike Android

Huawei’s HarmonyOS is microkernel-based, much like Google’s Fuchsia OS. This makes it more of a direct competitor to Fuchsia than Android. This design ensures that the new OS can be used on multiple types of devices at once. So, it’s meant to be a multi-device solution rather than a smartphone focused OS.

Unlike Linux kernels which have a relatively large amount of code in a shared address space, microkernels have a smaller amount of shared code and enable faster communication between its components.

33. HarmonyOS will not allow root access

Huawei confirms you won’t get root access on the Harmony OS. This has been done to avoid any future security concerns, which the company says is a security risk on Android and other Linux-based OSes.

44. HarmonyOS is primarily for IoT products

Huawei is targeting IoT products such as wearables, smart screen products, smart speakers, in-car entertainment units and other smart products for its new HarmonyOS. Smartphones are not really the priority but the company stresses that it is capable of replacing Android on its mobile devices.

55. Huawei smartphones can shift to HarmonyOS in just a couple of days

Huawei revealed that if the need arises, it can quickly shift to HarmonyOS on its smartphones. It will just take 1-2 days for the company to replace Android on its phones. That’s impressive yet scary at the same time!

66. Android Apps are not compatible out of the box

Huawei’s HarmonyOS won’t support Android apps out of the box. The company notes that ‘small changes’ need to be made to existing apps to ensure that it can run on its new OS. But it is possible to port Android, HTML5, and Linux apps over to HarmonyOS using Huawei’s ARK compiler, which is open source.

77. Huawei is building its own app store

Huawei is already busy building a replacement for the Google Play store. The company’s inhouse app store is called as Huawei AppGallery and it is already asking developers to publish their Android apps over on its own apps store as well. The company has even unveiled Huawei Mobile Services as an alternative to Google Play services.

88. Huawei’s Mate 30 series could use HarmonyOS

While Huawei stressed that HarmonyOS isn’t really targeted for smartphones, it could be forced to install the new OS on the upcoming Mate 30 series. The company has confirmed that the Mate 30 series models haven’t received Google Play certification yet. If the Huawei ban continues, the Chinese telecommunications giant could be forced to use HarmonyOS on the new models. There are already rumors that the Mate 30 Lite will be the first HarmonyOS running smartphone. Let’s wait and watch.

99. HarmonyOS will go Open Source sometime next year

Huawei is planning to make HarmonyOS completely open-source sometime next year. This could bring in companies like OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi to collaborate and develop the new operating system. US ban is currently a primary threat to Huawei, but it can extend to other Chinese companies as well. I’m sure they would want an alternative like HarmonyOS in case things go south.

1010. HarmonyOS will build its roots in China first

Huawei Mate 30 Lite Leak
Huawei’s Mate 30 Lite could feature HarmonyOS!

Huawei will lay the foundations of the HarmonyOS in the Chinese market, later expanding it to international markets. So, the first set of HarmonyOS products will be unveiled in China, starting with the Honor Vision Smart screen.

So, that’s everything you should know about the new HarmonyOS.

Let’s know if you think it can eventually replace or at least compete directly with Android for smartphones.

Samsung says the Galaxy Home smart speaker is still being enhanced – Not a vaporware afterall

Samsung was expected to finally release the Galaxy Home smart speakers at the Unpacked event held a few days back but that didn’t happen. The smart speaker was announced one year ago but is still elusive. Just when the Galaxy Home was being designated as vaporware, the company has come out to clarify that the smart speaker is still coming.Samsung Galaxy Home

The company says the device isn’t dead and it is still being refined. Samsung looks forward to “sharing more with Galaxy fans soon”. In the meantime, it’s going to keep enhancing the speaker without expatiating on what that means. The company wasn’t forthcoming with a release schedule for the smart speaker. Since the release is still unannounced, we think Samsung is still expanding the smart functionalities of the TV to make it distinct from the smart speakers we have around. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

HMD Global announces IFA Berlin attendance; expect new phones

IFA (Berlin ranks) alongside CES (Las Vegas) and MWC (Barcelona) as one of the major tech shows of the year. Just like other tech shows, it is a convergence of manufacturers, investors, tech journalists, and consumers.

Some manufacturers also usually announce new products at the event. HMD Global has confirmed it will be attending and we expect it will announce a couple of new Nokia phones.

The announcement was made on Twitter by Juho Sarvikas, the Chief Product Officer of HMD Global. This will be the first time the manufacturer will be attending the trade show.

Nokia IFA Berlin launch

The attached image says there will be an event on September 5 at 4:00 PM. IFA actually begins on September 6 and will run through till September 11.

There are a bunch of phones we expect HMD Global will unveil. There is the Nokia 8.2 which is rumored to have a 32MP pop-up selfie camera and run Android Q out of the box. There is also the Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 smartphones.

The Nokia 7.2 is said to have a display with a waterdrop notch. It is also shown to have triple rear cameras arranged in a circular housing similar to that used by the Moto Z series. There will be a fingerprint scanner below the rear cameras and reports say a Snapdragon 660 processor and a 3500mAh battery will be under the hood.

A leak from last month revealed the Nokia 6.2 will also have an FHD+ display, triple rear cameras, a Snapdragon 660 processor and a 3300mAh battery.

Both the Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 are expected to launch in China this month, so the IFA announcement should be the global unveiling.

All Nokia phones announced at IFA should be part of the Android One program and run stock Android out of the box.

We also expect HMD Global to announce one or two feature phones too.

Huawei unveils HarmonyOS at 2019 Developer Conference

The Huawei Developer Conference kicked off today and the Chinese giant has unveiled a brand new OS called HarmonyOS. HarmonyOS, unlike other major operating systems, is designed to work on every device thanks to it being micro-kernel based.

HarmonyOS will not only work on smartphones but will also work on TVs, tablets, smart speakers, wireless earbuds, smartwatches, PCs, VR glasses, and even in cars. Huawei’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Yu, says the OS is designed to work on devices with RAM sizes ranging from kilobytes to gigabytes.

HarmonyOS is the first microkernel-based distributed OS for all scenarios – Richard Yu, HDC 2019

HarmonyOS will support a wide range of apps including Android, Linux, and HTML5 in the future. The new operating system uses Huawei’s ARK compiler and will support Kotlin, Java, Javascript, C, and C++ programming languages. It will also have a verified Trusted Execution Environment for a better connected security across multiple devices.

Huawei said it began working on the OS back in 2017. It is currently in version 1.0 with Version 2.0 scheduled for launch next year and version 3.0 planned for 2021. We should also see it appear on PCs next year and on VR headsets in 2022.

HarmonyOS roadmap

HarmonyOS will debut tomorrow on the Honor TV. It will not appear on phones yet as Huawei says it is still sticking to Android. However, they said switching to HarmonyOS can be done already and should take between 1 to 2 days.

Xiaomi M1904F3BG (CC9) gets certified in Russia, may launch soon as the Mi A3 Pro

This year, Xiaomi switched things up a bit with the launch of its Android One smartphone series, the Mi A-line. Instead of launching the Mi A3 Lite and Mi A3, we only got the latter which itself is a downgrade in some areas when compared to the Mi A2. Following its announcement, there were reports that we will be getting a Mi A3 Pro later. It seems that time is drawing closer.

Yesterday, Russia’s EEC certified a phone with the model number M1904F3BG. The model number is a variant of that of the Xiaomi CC9 (M1904F3BT/M1904F3BC).

Xiaomi M1904F3BG

The Mi A3 Lite is actually a rebranded version of the Xiaomi CC9e sold in China, and since the device certified by the EEC is actually the Xiaomi CC9, there is a high probability it will arrive as the Mi A3 Pro in Europe.

The Xiaomi CC9 has a 6.39-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a waterdrop notch and Gorilla Glass 5 protection. There is a Snapdragon 710 processor under the hood with 6GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage.

Xiaomi CC9

There is a 32MP f/2.0 camera in front for selfies and a 48MP + 8MP + 2MP triple camera setup on the rear. The CC9 also has an in-display fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC which should come in useful for Google Pay, an audio jack, an IR blaster, and FM radio. It packs a 4030mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging.

Based on its specs, the Xiaomi CC9 fits well as the Mi A3 Pro. It has better specs than the Mi A2 series and will definitely sell for a much higher price.

We don’t know how soon it will launch but there is a chance it will be announced before the end of August.

Huawei Mate 30 Lite could be the first HongMeng OS powered smartphone

Huawei Developer Conference 2019 is kicking off today, where the Chinese giant is expected to announce new products, including HongMeng OS, EMUI 10 and Honor Smart Screen among others.

After initial buzz about HongMeng OS being Huawei’s answer to Google’s Android operating system, the company’s executive claimed that HongMong OS was never meant to be an Android replacement and is for enterprise use.

Huawei HongMeng OS aka Oak OS

However, it was recently reported that the company is working on to launch a new smartphone by the end of this year, which will be running HongMeng OS out-of-the-box. The report also claimed that the budget smartphone will be priced around 2,000 yuan.

Now, a new report has surfaced online which claims that the upcoming Huawei Mate 30 Lite will be the first smartphone to run the company’s in-house developed HongMeng OS. The report claims that while the international variant will be running Android Q and EMUI 10, the Chinese variant will be powered by HongMeng OS.

As per the leaks, the Mate 30 Lite will come with a 6.26-inch punch-hole display and is expected to feature quadruple-camera setup on the back which is housed within a square-shaped module. It will have 48 MP primary camera, an 8 MP secondary camera and two 2 MP camera sensors.

DJI schedules “Transform Your World” event on August 13; Osmo Mobile 3 launch expected

Today, China-based drone maker DJI has revealed that it will be launching a new product on 13th August at an event named “Transform Your World”, but the company has not clarified which product it is. However, many believe that DJI is gearing up to launch Osmo Mobile 3 at this event.

DJI Osmo Mobile 3 Launch Event

Earlier, the grip handle, as well as the whole product, i.e. the upcoming Osmo Mobile 3, was leaked online. Reports indicate that the device will come with support for Bluetooth 5.0 Low Energy (LE) as well as USB Type-C port. But apart from that nothing much is known about this upcoming product. It’s still unclear what new functionality we can expect from the DJI Osmo Mobile 3.

The DJI Osmo Mobile 2 stabilizer packs a 2,600mAh battery (18650 LiPo) that is claimed to provide 15 hours of usage on a single charge. This was a significant upgrade to the original which used replaceable 1,225mAh batteries that lasted about 4.5 hours.

Compared to the original model, the second-generation model was also lighter at 485 grams, thanks to the switch to “high-performance nylon” from the nylon and magnesium alloy of the original.

It comes with a wide range of features, including from timelapse, to motion lapse, hyper-lapse, slow-mo (still only iOS), and also active tracking and live broadcasting. The company had also introduced a zoom slider to the left of the stabilizer to make zooming easy.

The DJI Osmo Mobile 2 was launched for $129.95, which is less than half the price of its predecessor. Thus, it’s hard to imagine if DJI slashes down the pricing of the upcoming Osmo Mobile 3 even further.
