Meizu confirms 5G smartphone launch in the first half of 2020

Development of the 5G technology has been happening at such a rapid pace that a few countries, such as South Korea and China have already started commercial operations of this next-generation telecom network.

With this, many smartphone manufacturers have announced their plans to launch a 5G compatible smartphone later this year. A few of them, including Samsung, Xiaomi, and Huawei among others have already launched their first 5G phone.

Meizu 5G Smartphone 2020

Other smartphone manufacturers, which includes the likes of Vivo, Oppo, Lenovo, and others have announced that they will be launching their own 5G smartphone in the coming months. Now, China-based Meizu has announced that it will be launching its 5G device in the first half of 2020.

In a poster announcing this development, the company also revealed that it became a member of the three leading telecom operators in China — China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom.

The company became a member of China Mobile’s 5G Terminal Pioneer Program in June last year and China Telecom’s 5G Research and Development Alliance in September last year. Last month, it became a part of China Unicom’s 5G Joint Innovation Laboratory.

A couple of days back, Meizu founder and CEO Huang Zhang said in the company’s forum that the 5G device from the company will be launched next year, at a time when the market is mature enough to accept and adopt the 5G technology. He thinks that it’s not a wise move to be an early adopter of the 5G technology, especially at a time when 4G consumption is shooting up.

While the company has now confirmed that the 5G smartphone from Meizu will be launched in the first half of next year, there’s no information available regarding this upcoming smartphone. However, we’ll come to know more about this phone as the launch nears.

We Go Hands On with Xiaomi Mi A3 ‘Kind Of Grey’ Variant Before Launch

There’s been a lot of buzz around the Xiaomi Mi A3 in the past couple of weeks. However, nothing much is left to our imagination since the phone has been extensively leaked. There’s already a hands-on with the device and now, we have got the Xiaomi Mi A3 in our hands too. So, let’s take a closer look at what the device has to offer.

Mi A3 hands on box 01

First, the Xiaomi Mi A3 is an exact replica of the Xiaomi Mi CC9e in terms of design and specs. So it’s clear that Xiaomi is going to sell it in the international markets as a rebranded CC9e model. So you get the same dew drop display on the front with thick bezels at the bottom. The back remains the same as well, with the phone featuring triple cameras on the top left corner and the Xiaomi logo on the bottom left. However, unlike the Mi CC9e, the Mi A3 comes with a bunch of stickers on its right side, including the Android One logo. There’s CE certification as well which confirms that the phone is headed for Europe.

Mi A3 hands on 04

As for the specs, the Mi A3 stays exactly the same as the CC9e. So, yes, the phone will continue to use an HD+ screen which will be a downgrade from the FHD screen on its predecessor. The screen will be a 6.08-inch AMOLED panel and will come with in-screen fingerprint sensor. Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 powers the phone and there’s a large 4030mAh battery as well.

mi a3 box 02

Finally, the triple camera setup remains the same with a 48MP sensor along with an 8MP wide-angle sensor and 2MP depth sensor. Upfront, the phone retains a powerful 32MP selfie shooter. As for the software, the phone gets a stock Android Pie flavor instead of MIUI.

Mi A3 hands on 03

We got the Xiaomi Mi A3 4GB + 64GB model but there should be other variants on the way. It’s interesting to note that Xiaomi takes inspiration from Google’s Pixel lineup in naming the color for the device. The grey color model with us is simply called as ‘Kind Of Grey’. The box includes a silicon case as well.

The Mi A3 will be officially announced in Spain later today. However, the phone is already up for sale on Giztop.

We are currently in the process of reviewing the device, so stay tuned for more updates! You can also check out our CC9 review from here!

Special Edition Gold Redmi K20 Pro full image leaks

Calling the Redmi K20 Pro one of the best devices on the market wouldn’t be an overstatement. As it stands, the device is a testament to how far one can push the envelope when it comes to mid-range pricing. It’s a phenomenally good device, even with the price out of the equation, with no major flaws and very few minor flaws on top of that. So, it makes sense that Xiaomi and Redmi would want to capitalize on this.

Yesterday, the company teased a small section of a device with bright gold sheen. Today, we’ve got leaks that reveal the device to be exactly what we thought it was. Redmi is making a new limited edition Redmi K20 Pro variant with a gold colour scheme, and for once the garish gold doesn’t look too bad.

The report also claims that this variant will go on sale in India INR 480,000 ($7000). We have no idea what sort of gold is going into this to jack up the price to $7000, but we’re not exactly huge fans. Is there really even a point to the device if it’s so expensive? We’re not entirely sure, but at the very least, the device isn’t ludicrously ugly like many gold devices are.

In terms of specs, this gold Redmi K20 Pro is pretty much exactly the same as your typical Redmi K20 Pro. All the great specs are still here, along with excellent features and design, just for a much higher price point. There’s essentially no reason to buy this device, just like there’s never been any reason to purchase ludicrously expensive device. But, it exists, and we suppose there’s probably a market for these things somewhere in the world.

Huawei to reportedly use HongMeng OS in its first Smart TV

Recently, an executive of Huawei’s sub-brand Honor confirmed that the company is working on Smart TVs. Now, insiders aware of the development say that the first Smart TV from Huawei will come powered by the company’s own HongMeng OS.

As per the reports, Huawei will be launching its first Smart TV as early as August this year. The company is aiming its Smart TV product, which it likes to call “Smart Screens”, the hub for controlling all internet-connected devices at home.

Huawei HongMeng OS aka Oak OS

The TV will also act as an entertainment as well as an information center for the families, claims Honor President George Zhao. While he took the stage recently to confirm the development of smart TVs, he didn’t reveal much about the features of the upcoming TV.

We’ve known about the HongMeng OS from Huawei from quite some time now. After the US government put Huawei in the “Entity List”, effectively banning US-based firms to do business with the Chinese giant, Huawei confirmed that it had been working on its own operating system and it’s ready to get launched.

As per the reports, the HongMeng OS is currently in the testing phase and is expected to get launched in the coming months. Recently, during an interview with French media, Huawei CEO confirmed that the HongMeng OS or Oak OS won’t be limited to smartphones and will run on a wide range of devices, including routers, network switches, tablets, computers and data centers.

Huawei is aiming to create a singular operating system for all of its products. The company’s CEO Ren Zhengfei also said that it’s very likely that HongMeng OS is faster than the Android and macOS. Earlier, it was reported that the upcoming operating system is about 60 percent faster than Android.

Xiaomi Mi A3 hands-on confirms phone has an HD+ display

When Xiaomi eventually announces the Mi A3 in Spain today, a lot of folks will be disappointed, as one of its key features is a downgrade from the previous versions.

Mi A3 hands-on

A hands-on article by Malaysian blog Soyacincau, has confirmed that the Mi A3 is truly a rebranded Xiaomi CC9e down to the display. This means the Mi A3 has an HD+ AMOLED screen and not an FHD+ AMOLED screen. This is a downgrade from the previous models which all have 1080p screens including last year’s Mi A2 Lite.

The screen is 6.088” in size and has a waterdrop notch at the top for the selfie camera. The particular variant of the Mi A3 they got their hands on has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage which can be expanded via a hybrid dual-SIM slot.

Mi A3 retail box

The retail box also confirms there is a Snapdragon 665 processor inside it and the color variant is called “Kind of Grey”. It appears Xiaomi has borrowed a leaf from Google’s color-naming scheme. The color is identical to the CC9e’s deep gray variant. There is Xiaomi written on the bottom left corner of the phone and on the bottom right is the Android One logo.

The Mi A3 has a 32MP selfie camera while the rear is home to a 48MP triple camera setup. The secondary cameras are an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2MP depth sensor. The phone also has a 4030mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging, a USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm audio jack at the top. It also runs stock Android 9 Pie with June’s security patch installed.

Design

There is no doubt about the fact that Oppo Reno 10x zoom comes with one of the most innovative form factors ever seen on a mobile phone in the last years. It is equipped with the first “shark fin” pop-up camera and it has a screen-to-body ratio very close to 100 percent without the need of a notch. Further, it has a very original glass back, especially when it comes to that vertical stripe in the middle. While Oppo Reno 10x zoom has the best look in my opinion, Samsung Galaxy S10+ offers a better build quality as it is fully waterproof (up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes).

Display

Samsung is the best display manufacturer when it comes to mobile phones and it was pretty obvious that Galaxy S10+ had to come with one of the most outstanding panels out there. The handset sports an amazing color reproduction, a high QHD+ resolution and it is even HDR10+ compliant. If we only consider flagship phones, Oppo Reno 10x zoom has just an average AMOLED panel without HDR certification and with a just Full HD+ resolution (1080p vs 1440p on the Galaxy S10+). However, it has a wider panel, one of the widest ones on flagship phones with a diagonal of 6.6 inches. But I would definitely go for display quality instead of display size.

Specs & Software

If we consider the most expensive variants, so the ones with the best memory configurations, Samsung Galaxy S10+ largely wins the hardware comparison. Indeed, it is equipped with up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of UFS 3.0 internal storage, while Oppo Reno 10x zoom stops at just 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. Both benchmarks and speed tests highlight a better software and hardware optimization on the Samsung Galaxy S10+, despite it has to manage a display with a higher resolution and a highly-customized user interface. However, in each case you got a flagship hardware department, so you should not notice any difference in daily use.

Camera

Oppo Reno 10x zoom has an amazing 10x hybrid zoom technology which allows a better zoom with a minor loss of detail compared to the Galaxy S10+, but when it comes to overall photo and video quality, Samsung’s flagship is a lot better than its rivals. It shoots brighter photos in low-light conditions thanks to its variable aperture which goes up to f/1.5, and it even shows more accurate colors when there is light. Even when it comes to selfies, Samsung Galaxy S10+ is the king with its dual front camera able to record 4K videos. So, overall, Oppo Reno 10x zoom is better only when it comes to zoom.

Battery

Even though Samsung Galaxy S10+ has a slightly bigger battery, Oppo Reno 10x zoom is able to last more on a single charge in most of the scenarios because it has better power management and a more efficient display. Both support Qi wireless charging, but only Samsung Galaxy S10 has the reverse wireless charging feature.

Price

Do not take the price info seriously as the price of these handsets varies a lot depending on the market and the actual street prices. But in the highest amount of countries, Samsung Galaxy S10+ starts from an €830/$930 listing price, while Oppo Reno 10x zoom costs €800/$897 in its base variant. At the end of the day, Samsung Galaxy S10+ looks like a more complete device due to its better overall camera performance, a better display, water resistance, and higher-end memory configurations.

Nubia Red Magic 3 to get Snapdragon 855+ edition

After the announcement of the Snapdragon 855 plus yesterday, a bunch of Chinese manufacturers hinted at the launch of new phones that will be powered by the new SoC. One of such manufacturers is Nubia‘s Red Magic, and today it confirmed there will be a special edition Red Magic 3 powered by the new chipset.

The Weibo post says the phone is “coming soon” and includes a poster that shows the Snapdragon 855+ processor. It also has a bunch of text in different fonts including the name of its latest device, the Red Magic 3.

Red Magic 3 Snapdragon 855 Plus

We can’t say if this new version will replace the still new Snapdragon 855 version or if both will exist side-by-side. If it will be the latter, expect to shell out more cash to get that CPU and GPU performance boosts which the Snapdragon 855+ brings.

If you already bought the Red Magic 3, you won’t be missing much. However, if you are yet to, you may want to wait until this new version is released before you order a unit.

The Red Magic 3 is the first smartphone in the world to have a built-in cooling fan. It has a 6.65-inch AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. There is a 16MP selfie camera and a single 48MP rear camera. The phone also has touch-sensitive buttons on the side, DTS X Ultra audio, a 3.5mm jack, and packs a massive 5000mAh battery with support for 27W fast charging and USB PD.

The Red Magic 3 comes in several configurations with the base model having 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage while the highest configuration doubles the RAM to 12GB and has 256GB os storage.

Other brands that have hinted at launching Snapdragon 855+ phones include iQOO, Lenovo, Xiaomi, and Redmi.

Huawei to Invest $3.1 billion in Italy in the next three years

Huawei seems to be strengthening its position in Europe as the company announced its plan to invest $3.1 billion in Italy over the course of the next three years. The company’s Italian chief, Thomas Miao further revealed that the new investment will create 1,000 direct jobs in the market by 2021.

Mate 20 X comes with new-age 5G support

Specifically, Huawei plans to invest around $1.2 billion in operations and marketing and another 1.9 billion in direct supplies in the Italian market. An additional $52 million would be spent for R&D activities. This investment comes on the sidelines of a new decree passed by the Italian government that increases the power of the state to intervene in the matters of the private ICT (information and communications technology) sector which includes 5G. The decree reportedly comes as a result of the government’s need to strengthen national security in the country’s strategic sectors.

According to the decree, Italian companies will be required to inform the government of any purchases in the ICT sector from non-European suppliers. If this decree is passed by the parliament, then the rollout of essential ICT infrastructure networks like 5G will be monitored.

Huawei is currently the world’s largest telecom equipment supplier and a leader in 5G technology. But this decree could give an unfair advantage to European companies like the Finnish Nokia and the Swedish Ericsson who also supply 5G equipment to carriers. So, Huawei’s Miao has urged Italy to make the rules fair for all supplier and not just target non-European companies.

More Elephone PX pop-up camera device surface showing its colors

Last month we informed you about the redesigned Elephone PX smartphone that is set to follow the U2 in the pop-up camera series of the company. The original Elephone PX that was announced about a year ago never made it to the market due to manufacturing problems so the company decided to reimburse all the backer of the Indiegogo campaign.

Elephone PX

It seems that the reason behind the delay of the redesigned PX is the control of supplier resources from first-line brands like Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi that have or are about to introduce their pop-up camera phones. Eventually, the phone will hit the market and judging from the photos that surfaced today, it will be soon. The new photos reveal the color choices made be Elephone and they look stunning.

As you can see, there are 2 gradient colors and one solid color with lumia effects on the back. To keep up to date with future Elephone products, you can visit their official website.

ROG Phone 2 Geekbench result shows how powerful the Snapdragon 855+ is

The ASUS ROG Phone 2 will be the first smartphone to come with the new Snapdragon 855 Plus processor. Set to be announced next week, July 23, the device has been spotted on Geekbench, giving us a chance to see how powerful the new SoC is.

Benchmarked as the “asus ASUS_I001DC”, the ROG Phone 2 runs Android 9 Pie. It also has 12GB of RAM, though we expect there will be another RAM variant. Last year’s model was only available in a single RAM variant (8GB) but you could choose between 12GB or 512GB of storage.

ROG Phone 2 Geekbench

The Geekebench result shows the motherboard name as “msmnile”, the same name it shows for a lot of other Snapdragon 855 phones. The base frequency is also the same at 1.78GHz. However, the ROG 2 scores slightly higher in its core test.

For the single-core test, the device scored 3616 points and scored 11,103 points in the multi-core test. This is just a bit higher than the average score of Snapdragon 855-powered phones. The difference isn’t large because the only difference between the SD855 and SD855+ is the higher CPU and GPU clockspeed of the latter.

The new processor is expected to show up in phones from Black Shark, Xiaomi, Redmi, Nubia’s Red Magic line, and Vivo’s iQOO later this year.

Exynos 9825-powered Galaxy Note 10 appears on GeekBench, surpasses Exynos 9820

Samsung‘s Galaxy Note 10 has just been benchmarked for the first time on Geekbench. The device was sported on the benchmark app with a comparison between the Exynos 9820 and Exynos 9825 chipsets onboard. The Exynos 9820 is the SoC onboard the Galaxy S10+while the latter is onboard the Note 10.

The GeekBench listing shows the Note 10 comes with the model number Samsung SM-N970F. The device is also listed to have 8GB of RAM. The Exynos 9825 SoC is expected to be a 7nm chipset whereas the Exynos 9820 isn’t. The Exynos 9825 will utilise Samsung’s 7nm ultraviolet lithography that is perceived to be superior to the TSMC foundry’s aging production method that is reaching the end of its abilities.

As for the benchmark performance, the new Exynos 9825 chipset on board the Galaxy Note 10 is shown to be faster than even the Galaxy S10+ scores on Geekbench. The chipset manages a Single-Core Score of 4495 points and on the multi-core test, it scores 10223 points. Whereas the Galaxy S10+ is listed with a single-core score of 4357 and the multi-core score of 10045 points. This is pretty impressive as this puts the Note 10 in good stead ahead of next year’s Snapdragon 865 release. Both chipsets may likely be produced on the same node.
