OnePlus 7 Pro’s excess demand force OnePlus to redistribute other regions’ supply to China

After OnePlus 7 Pro went for sale in India and few other regions, today it was available in its home country. China’s major e-tailer – Jingdong termed the OnePlus 7 Pro as the ‘best selling product on the whole platform.’ It garnered huge sales within few minutes in China, but soon after, it went out of stock. As like always, the company was once again met with a low-stock problem due to insufficient production capacity.

OPPO K3 Hands On Pictures: Stunning beauty, pop-up selfie cam and it’s not even a flagship!

OPPO yesterday unveiled the much-anticipated OPPO K3 premium smartphone. The K3 has been a regular in leaks which had shown us the renders as well as the key specs. But in real life, the design and build beat our expectations. Chinese news blog MyDrivers have published a hands-on review of the K3. We bring you the pictures, showing the K3 captured from all angles. OPPO K3

OPPO K3 could be confused for a flagship phone, considering the premium build alone. However, the Snapdragon 710 chipset that fires up the mobile phone clearly places it in the upper mid-range category. The full-screen display is notch-less due to the use of a pop-up selfie shooter. Thus, the bezels at the top and sides are almost non-existent. The bottom chin has a sizeable amount which isn’t too wide. This design gives users an expansive 91.1% screen area to play with. The device features a 6.5-inch FullHD+ OLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The phone also packs an in-display fingerprint sensor.OPPO K3

At the rear, there is a dual camera setup, with each of the sensors lying in isolation instead of being housed in a single ring. The main sensor is a 16MP Sony IMX519 sensor with f/1.7 aperture and a 2MP depth sensor. The pop-up camera is a 16MP AI sensor located at centre of the top edge. The sensor will open as fast as 0.74s, which is pretty fast. The pop-up camera also has a lifecycle of over 200,000 times usage. Thus, even if it is used up to 100 times a day, it will still last up to five years before the need to replace arises. The rear panel is made of glass with a colourful 3D gradient body.

To recap about the internals, the K3 features 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and comes with up to 256 GB of UFS2.1 flash storage. There is a dedicated microSD card slot on the gadget for expanding its storage but that functions also as a second SIM card slot. The K3 equally crams a 3,765mAh battery with support for 20W quick charging through OPPO’s VOOC 3.0 Flash Charge innovation.OPPO K3

On the software end, the device runs on Android 9 Pie-flavoured ColorOS 6.0. Check out more pictures of the OPPO K3 from below.

Lenovo CEO says the company has no plan to develop its own OS and chips

After Huawei got banned by the United States from doing business with the US-based company, Huawei said that the company was getting prepared for such move since last year and has enough stock to run business for coming few months.

The company also said that along with stockpiling chipsets, the company has been working on its own mobile operating system as well as an application store that can replace the Google Play Store.

The CEO of Lenovo Group said that the world’s largest PC maker is not planning to develop its own operating system (OS) and chips despite rising fears that a slew of other Chinese technology companies could find themselves facing the same fate as Huawei.

Lenovo Logo

During a media briefing, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing said, “Lenovo does not intend to develop operating systems or chips as globalization remains an inevitable trend, therefore it is not necessary for a company to specialize in everything. We will do our own job and do it well.” He added that the company will continue to cooperate with trusted partners to provide users with the best products.

The stance of Lenovo is in stark contrast with that of Huawei. The world’s leading telecom equipment manufacturer said that it has been preparing for years to cope with the possibility of it being cut off from US tech and has been developing its own technology, including chipsets and software.

Apart from Huawei, China-based DJI, which is the leading brand in the world when it comes to Drone technology, said that it has also been developing its proprietary technology as an alternative to US tech.

The comment from Lenovo CEO comes just days after Huawei was added to the trade blacklist by the United States that prevents the company from buying US technology. There are also media reports claiming that other Chinese company could also be added to the list as the US deems them as a threat to their national security.

OnePlus 7 Pro vs Samsung S10: Which One Has Better Screen

Generally, manufacturers are used to release a flagship smartphone at a time, or one flagship product plus one small size model smartphone to meet different demands. However, with the development of high-end smartphones, Chinese mobile phone manufacturers have launched –Pro models, which have better performance than normal flagship smartphone.

Recently, OnePlus launched their latest and strongest smartphone, called OnePlus 7 Pro, which features an AMOLED display with 90Hz Refresh Rate. How does the special screen stack up against Samsung’s flagship? Let’s check the comparative test.

oneplus 7 pro vs samsung s10

We can find that curvature of the two smartphones is different from the pricture. The Samsung S10 has greater curvature, and the transition area is seamless. The advantage is that it can effectively reduce the influence of the curved screen for the operation. OnePlus 7 Pro has small curvature which makes the transition area not good.

Magnify the OnePlus 7 Pro screen to pixel size, and you will see a typical Pentile diamond arrangement, which is no doubt that it is an AMOLED screen from Samsung. The most prominent feature of this arrangement is the exquisite text display, but it is easy to appear color edge. Fortunately, the resolution of both smartphones are up to 2K level.

oneplus 7 pro vs samsung s10

OnePlus 7 Pro has much higher saturation of red than Samsung S10, and Samsung S10 has more natural transition between blue and green.

Set the screen brightness of the two phones to the maximum, and play video with the HDR video mode. The effect is as follows.

oneplus 7 pro vs samsung s10

oneplus 7 pro vs samsung s10

The overall brightness of Samsung is higher, which gets an edge in appearance. The overall display effect of OnePlus is a little too dark, which can’t show more details.

The disadvantage of OnePlus 6T is screen brightness, so let’s check out the comparison of the three smartphones. The average default maximum screen brightness of OnePlus 7, OnePlus 6T and Samsung S10 is 456nit, 448nit and 412nit.

oneplus 7 pro vs samsung s10

In the highlight, the average highest screen brightness of OnePlus 7and Samsung S10 is 636nit and 576nit. However, the OnePlus 6T still keeps the default maximum screen brightness (448nit) in the highlight. From the comparison, we can find that OnePlus 7 Pro has been improved in this aspect, which performs well.

oneplus 7 pro vs samsung s10

Generally, a wider gamut of colors results in a richer color display. We tested the default bright-color mode of the two smartphones through software, and the results show that the screens of both phones can exceed 100% in sRGB. Samsung S10 can reach to 97% AdobeRGB, and OnePlus 7 Pro reach to 95% AdobeRGB. Look at the color range picture below, obviously, OnePlus 7 Pro has a smaller range on the green display than the Samsung S10.

oneplus 7 pro vs samsung s10

In the tone response test, the black line should be close to the light blue line. Look at the picture below, the black line of OnePlus 7 Pro is almost fit the light blue line, which performs better than Samsung S10.

oneplus 7 pro vs samsung s10

In the gray scale test, the two phones are tested in the highest brightness, OnePlus 7 Pro generally remained at 7900-7800k, and the Samsung S10 generally remained at 7860-7800k. Therefore, Samsung S10 gets a slight edge.

oneplus 7 pro vs samsung s10

In terms of color contrast, the shorter color bar means the smaller color deviation, and the color displays accurate. In the default color vivid mode, OnePlus 7 Pro performs better in the white color, but Samsung S10 performs better in gray, black and green color. The color standard mean of OnePlus 7 Pro is 2.74, and Samsung S10 is 1.99.

oneplus 7 pro vs samsung s10

OnePlus 7 Pro has AMOLED wide color range mode, which shows more colorful than color vivid mode. And the color standard mean is 2.1.

oneplus 7 pro vs samsung s10

Battery

We used the phones to play 1080p video for an hour, browse microblog, TikTok, Arena of Alor and PUBG for half an hour respectively. OnePlus 7 Pro is fueled by 4000mAh battery, and after three hours, the OnePlus 7 Pro still has 53% battery. It’s hard that the OnePlus 7 Pro can get good battery life in the mode of 90Hz+2K.

Conclusion

From the test, we can see the progress of OnePlus screen, which has good color range and color standard. Also, OnePlus 7 Pro performs better than Samsung S10 in the test of screen brightness and tone response. Most worthy of mention is that the screen of OnePlus 7 Pro comes with 90Hz refresh rate, which Samsung doesn’t have. If you don’t mind the battery life, I think OnePlus 7 Pro is a good choice.

Apple Supplier Pegatron shifting production to Indonesia

As the trade war between the U.S. and China worsens, and sanctions against Huawei get thrown into the mix, Apple and its supplier Pegatron are beginning to hedge their bets by relocating more of the company’s supply chain to places outside of China. A local report by Digitimes suggests that Indonesia has been chosen over Vietnam thanks to a better worker supply.

It seems like Pegatron is all prepared for assembling MacBooks and iPads in Batam, Indonesia, with production slated to start next month. The work will be subcontracted by Pegatron to PT Sat Nusapersada, a local manufacturer in Batam, and although the company’s CEO stopped short of naming the clients it would be working for, there’s a high chance Apple is in that list.

Apple Logo

Pegatron is investing $300 million in Indonesian factories to achieve this, and they seem quite confident. PT Sat Nusapersada’s CEO claims that Indonesian productivity is superior to China’s, with a comparatively small 2% turnover rate. Apple’s contract manufacturers have indeed experienced volatility in their labor forces, though these have been attributed as much to wage and quality of life issues as major swings in product demand.

Pegatron is not the only key Apple supplier looking to assemble products outside China: Foxconn has confirmed its own plans to begin mass-production of iPhones in India later this year. Given the massive escalation in that war by the Trump administration earlier this month, this move only makes sense in the grand scheme of things. The escalations are hard on everyone, and we hope to see some form of resolution soon.

Samsung patents ‘fold-out’ foldable smartphone design as Galaxy Fold alternative

Samsung’s much-awaited and ambitious first-generation foldable smartphone, Samsung Galaxy Fold, made its global debut earlier this year in February and was all set to go on sale in April. However, issues related to the phone’s display, as pointed out by reviewers, forced the company to postpone its launch.

While the company has not yet announced the new launch date for the Samsung Galaxy Fold smartphone, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted a new patent to Samsung relating to an alternative folding smartphone based on a ‘Fold-Out’ design.

Samsung Fold-Out Design Patent

The patent describes a foldable display apparatus that is adjustable between a folded configuration and an unfolded configuration includes a flexible display panel and a case. The first case supports the first side of the flexible display panel and a second case supports the second side of the flexible display panel.

There’s also a link member connecting the first case to the second case and a locking unit which is configured to prevent rotation of the first case and the second case in a folding direction when the foldable display apparatus is in the unfolded configuration.

The locking unit may include a slide cover rotatably coupled to the first case and slidably coupled to the second case. The slide cover may slide along a rail groove in the second case when the first case and the second case are rotated to move the foldable display apparatus between the folded configuration and the unfolded configuration.

Currently, Samsung is fixing the issues related to the Galaxy Fold smartphone. It is expected to tuck the protective display layer into the body and will also block the gaps at the top and bottom of the hinge to prevent debris from damaging the foldable display. While there’s no official confirmation yet, but the smartphone is expected to be available for purchase from next month.

Panasonic confirms continued support for Huawei

Japanese electronics firm Panasonic said on Thursday it has halted the shipment of some components to Huawei and has stopped all business transactions with the firm following the now storied US ban on Huawei. At least, that’s what we thought, as the company has since decided backtracked on that statement, and will continue to supply parts to the embattled Chinese company.

Panasonic sent out an internal notification that it would suspend transactions with Huawei and its 68 affiliates that were banned by the US government. After scrutinising whether it was in breach of US sanctions by continuing to operate with Huawei however, Panasonic announced it would trade as normal with the Chinese company. “Huawei has always been an important partner with Panasonic Corp,” it said in a statement.

“We will continue to sell commodities and provide service to our Chinese clients like Huawei, according to the law and regulations of the country and region which Panasonic Corp is located. By helping China, we will help our business grow in China too.”

Huawei also released a statement thanking Panasonic for its consistent support.

“Panasonic is an important partner of Huawei and the two sides work closely together in various fields,” it said. “All business cooperation between Panasonic and Huawei remains in continuous and normal progress. Thanks to Panasonic for its consistent support to Huawei. At the same time, we would like to thank all the global supplier partners who have supported Huawei’s business development over the long time.”

Even through these slew of massive setbacks, Huawei has yet to truly topple over. It’s quite shocking to see how well they’ve held up, but until we get concrete proof that Huawei can survive well, it’ll still be quite worrisome to watch. Lenovo Z6 Pro Explorer Edition to come with support for 5G connectivity

Lenovo has so far launched two smartphones under its Lenovo Z6 lineup — Lenovo Z6 Pro flagship smartphone and the Lenovo Z6 Youth Edition, a watered-down variant of the flagship model. Now, the company has another device up its kitty — Lenovo Z6 Pro Explorer Edition.

In a Weibo post from Lenovo’s Vice President Chang Cheng, it has been confirmed that the company has Z6 Pro Explorer Edition, which features support for 5G connectivity. Most of the smartphone manufacturers have launched a 5G variant of their flagship smartphones launched this year.

Lenovo Z6 Pro Explorer Edition 5G Support

Samsung launched the Galaxy S10 5G while Huawei has Mate X and Mate 20 X 5G. Xiaomi had earlier launched the Mi MIX 3 5G while OnePlus has recently announced the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G edition for the European market.

The image shared by the company’s VP on Weibo confirms the 5G availability, making it the first 5G smartphone from Lenovo. The image also shows that the phone has a similar color pattern on the back panel as the standard Z6 Pro model. However, it seems that the Explorer Edition could come with a transparent back panel, similar to the Explorer Edition from Xiaomi.

Apart from the change in the material of the body and support for 5G connectivity, everything else in terms of specifications is expected to be the same as the standard version. It could come with a 6.3-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, waterdrop notch, and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9.

The phone will come packed with the sixth-generation in-display fingerprint reader. It is powered by Qualcomm’s 7nm Snapdragon 855 chipset clocked at 2.84GHz. There’s also a Coldfront liquid cooling technology regulates the internal temperature of the device.

On the front side, the smartphone comes with a 32 MP snapper. Huawei trademarks Hongmeng name, possibly for their upcoming OS

Google cutting off its Android relationship with Huawei in response to a US government ban on the Chinese giant wasn’t much of a surprise to Huawei. We’ve known for a while now that Huawei is in the process of making their own operating system, as confirmed by the company’s own Richard Yu. Today’s patent leak, however, gives us a possible name for the upcoming OS, that being Hongmeng.

The patent listing suggests that Hongmeng will be used as an operating system program, computer operating program, computer operating software, etc. In other words, it’s an operating system, though no other specifics have been revealed. It’s expected to appear later this Fall or early next year for phones, computers, tablets, TVs, cars, and wearables.

The OS will be compatible with all Android apps and they can also be recompiled to improve performance, like ChromeOS. Samsung has also done something similar in the past with Tizen, but this is different in the sense Huawei’s looking to completely replace Android and other operating systems on other platforms, like Microsoft’s Windows.

With Huawei’s massive and still growing popularity (possibly assisted by the said ban), it’s clear they need to recoup fast. Thankfully, it seems like they’re doing exactly that with all the latest news of their Hongmeng OS and other products. We’re eager to see how Huawei’s own OS turns out in comparison to Android, as well as how it performs in real life.
