The Huawei Band 3e was announced in China a few weeks ago but before then it had already launched in other markets including the US. The fitness tracker is now available for pre-order in China.

Motorola misled viewers with its Moto Mod 5G Speed Test

5G has been the theme of the Qualcomm Summit in Hawaii where the US-based chip maker released its first 5G-equipped mobile SoC – the Snapdragon 855. In fact, Qualcomm’s first keynote was dedicated to convincing journalists and media that next year is when 5G will be of significant importance. At the summit, Motorola demonstrated a live 5G speed test on its prototype 5G moto mod stuck on a Moto Z3. Media present at the event was allowed to try out the speed test themselves by downloading 1GB files in a Motorola app. Reporters who tested the mod stated that speeds of 470Mbps were achieved. However, The Verge reports that the 5G network was, in fact, running on speeds of 130 – 140Mbps, much lower than the 5Gbps that is the ultimate promise of 5G.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 855

According to the publication’s findings, there were two main factors that would make the Motorola 5G test much less significant that it appeared. Firstly, the 1GB files that were being downloaded at the demo were coming from an on-site server and not the actual internet. This means that this was not a real-world performance experiment. Moreover, the files were also seemingly undergoing compression. That means a file of 1GB could have been shrunk even up to 40 percent before being the data transfer took place. Now, while Motorola officials present on site said that compression is a common phenomenon even in real-world usage and what’s important for the user is the file itself, these cannot be two excuses for a real-world 5G test. That’s because, with compression, it would be impossible to get an idea of the true speed of the network.

Motorola said that the speed test was a temporary setup for a matter of days and it was not aware of compression. The company is now advertising speeds of 300Mbps to 500Mbps and if you want to see those promised 5Gbps levels in real life, you’re going to have to wait a bit more.

Samsung Galaxy A50 shows up on Geekbench with Exynos 9610

There is a new Galaxy A series smartphone coming soon and it was seen on Geekbench earlier today. The Galaxy A50 (SM-A505FN) first surfaced in a leak last week but with a different model number – SM-A505F along with some specs. The benchmark result has revealed more details about the phone.

The Galaxy A50 runs Android 9 Pie and is powered by the Exynos 9610 paired with 4GB of RAM. Don’t be fooled by the processor’s name, it belongs to the Exynos 7 series and is actually an upper mid-range chipset that was announced earlier this year. However, it does have a few tricks up its sleeves.

Samsung Galaxy A50 Geekbench

The Exynos 9610 is a 10nm octa-core chipset with four Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.3GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.6GHz. It also has a second generation ARM Mali-G72 GPU. Samsung also adds that the chipset has a Cortex-M4F-based low power sensor hub that powers Always-on features instead of waking up the main processor. Another feature of the chipset is support for 480fps slow-motion video recording at 1080p.

As it stands, the Galaxy A50 may as well be the first Samsung phone to come with the Exynos 9610 since it was announced as far back as March. It scored 1681 points and 4897 points in the single-core and multi-core tests respectively. The scores are close to that of the Snapdragon 636 but the Exynos has a higher single-core score.

OPPO strives to release the first 5G smartphone

Just recently, Qualcomm unveiled its next-generation Mobile Platform chipset which will be powering most of the flagships due in 2019. Apart from being a 7nm based chipset, the SDM855 has a specialty of being the first Qualcomm chipset to possess native 5G modem. In fact, major smartphone players by now should have sourced their fair share of chipsets from Qualcomm. But, OPPO strives to become the first manufacturer to bring the Snapdragon 855 powered 5G device to the market before others do so.

oppo 5g

OPPO is very much confident about bringing their first 5G supported device. And, believes it can achieve the first 5G smartphone crown. The company itself shared the vision of OPPO to become the first in 5G smartphones through its official Weibo handle. It’s pertinent to mention here that on November 30, OPPO successfully demoed the world’s first 5G mobile phone WeChat video call. Literally conveying the firm is capable and on the verge to start their 5G smartphone business.

In the ever-advancing smartphone world, the manufacturers are obsessed to be the first while adopting new technologies. Given other dominant players such as OnePlus,  Xiaomi and other Chinese firms are too in the race for becoming the first to launch a 5G mobile phone. It has to be seen how OPPO can overtake them to snatch the crown.

Yesterday, OnePlus CEO expressed its idea of launching 5G device early in 2019. He also added that they will have the first flagship smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 855. Perhaps the latest claim of OPPO ought to conflict with the announcement made by OnePlus a day ago. However, no matter whether OnePlus or OPPO come up with the first 5G device, the crown does belong to BBK Electronics, which is the parent company of both.

Well, let us wait and see how these dominant players can realize their claims and who comes out to be the real announcer of the first 5G device. What you think who will be, we’d be pleased to have your guesswork down in the comment section.

The Qualcomm sm6150 for arm64 appeared on the benchmark site yesterday. Unlike the Talos benchmark, the scores are higher and there are also some other differences.

SM6150 geekbench

The SM6150 test device has 6GB of RAM and runs Android 9 Pie. The processor has 8-cores but its base frequency of 1.80GHz is higher than that of “Talos” which is 1.71GHz. Its scores are also higher – 2598 points for the single core score and 5467 for the multi-core score.

It seems that the phone could be equipped with triple camera sensors out of which the third sensor will be a ToF (Time of Flight) 3D sensing camera. It works by emitting infrared light on to the surface on an object which bounces back to the sensor. The sensor also measures depth by determining the differences in energy levels which helps in creation of 3D maps of the object. Neither Huawei or Sony have commented on the existence of such a feature an upcoming Huawei phone.

OnePlus 5G phone with Snapdragon 855 confirmed to launch in early 2019

A report from the previous month had claimed that the 5G smartphone from OnePlus arriving next year won’t be the successor of the OnePlus 6T. In other words, the OnePlus 7 won’t be launching as the first 5G phone from the company. During Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018 event in Hawaii, OnePlus CEO and founder Carl Pei confirmed that it will be the first company to launch a 5G smartphone. It indicates that the unnamed OnePlus 5G phone will be fueled by Snapdragon 855. The first market to receive the smartphone will be Europe.

Through a tweet, Pei has confirmed that the company’s strategic partnership with EE carrier in the U.K and Qualcomm will result in the launch of the first 5G device in Europe. Recent reports have claimed that the 5G phone from the company will belong to a new lineup. Since it will be fueled by Snapdragon 855, it will be featuring the X50 LTE modem for 5G connectivity.

Through an official tweet, OnePlus has confirmed that it 5G ready smartphone will be announced in early 2019.  It is being speculated that the OnePlus 5g phone may debut at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) tech expo in February. Three months ago, OnePlus confirmed that it would be announcing something on Jan. 15, 2019. Probably, the Chinese manufacturer will unleash the OnePlus 5G phone on the said date.

In an interview with The Verge, Pei claimed that the OnePlus 5G phone will be costing $200 or $300 more than the OnePlus 6T smartphone. The reason why OnePlus is launching the 5G phone early is that it wants its engineers to work on the nuances of 5G which will assist in launching 5G phones in future.

The 5G network of EE will be available cross 19 cities. The OnePlus 5G phone will deliver slower 5G speeds through sub-6 spectrum used by EE, but it will be available in wider markets. The 5G connectivity offered by EE will be slower than the speedier 5G network from AT&T and Verizon. After arriving in the Europe, the OnePlus 5G phone may land in the U.S. through the aforementioned carriers.

MediaTek Helio M70 5G Baseband chipset announced, will start shipping next year

Soon after Qualcomm announced its latest flagship mobile chipset — Snapdragon 855 — with support for 5G connectivity, its rival MediaTek has now officially announced the MediaTek Helio M70 5G baseband chipset in China, which was first announced in Taiwan earlier this year.

The MediaTek Helio M70 is a multimode chipset with support for 2G/3G/4G/5G-enabled connectivity. It supports 5G radio (NR), along with the standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) network architectures, the sub-6GHz frequency band, high power user equipment (HPUE), and other key 5G technologies.

MediaTek Helio M70

The company says that the chipset is designed in compliance with the 3GPP Rel-15 new specifications with 5 Gbps data rate, leading the industry to support carrier aggregation. TL Lee, General Manager of MediaTek Wireless Communications Division, said:

MediaTek is committed to promoting the adoption of the latest technologies. With the commercialization of the first 5G baseband chipset, Helio M70, consumers will be able to enjoy the exciting 5G experience from a mature and complete solution. In the future, 5G and AI application areas will continue to grow, enhancing the connected experience for users in areas such as mobile phones or smart living.

The chipset aims to deliver an improved experience for customers and end users. For this, the MediaTek Helio M70 baseband chipset supports LTE and 5G dual connectivity (EN-DC) and ensures that the mobile devices are backward compatible with 4G/3G/2G in the absence of 5G networks.

According to MediaTek, the Helio M70 is able to design a 5G terminal device with a slim design advantage, helping manufacturers to design smaller, lower power mobile devices. MediaTek has announced that the Helio M70 baseband chipset is now available and is expected to ship in devices in the second half of 2019.

Xiaomi reveals DeepExposure AI algorithm to restore details and colors in poorly exposed photos

In the past few months, Xiaomi has improved the camera on its smartphones to a considerable extent. The company’s devices launched this year have garnered excellent ratings from DxOmark. The latest device to acquire this kind of rating is Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 which carries 12 megapixels +12 megapixel primary camera on the rear side while a 24 megapixel + 2-megapixel sensors sit on the front side. Now, Xiaomi has posted its new algorithm DeepExposure AI which helps to restore poorly exposed photos.

Most of the mobile cameras have the problem of poorly exposing photos if the light is brighter or if it is too dark. Hardly, except few manufacturers, no one has got any success of eliminating the poorly exposed photos. Today, Xiaomi has introduced DeepExposure AI algorithm which will help balance your photos with accurate lights and details.

Xioami has employed AI to fix this issue to over or underexposed photos. Xiaomi’s DeepExposure balance the exposure by dividing the photo into subfragments and then the exposure value of each fragment is adjusted separately. Finally, different parts are merged to form the final image. You can have a look at the overall process in the image below.

“The accurate exposure is the key of capturing high-quality photos in computational photography, especially for mobile phones that are limited by sizes of camera modules,” the researchers wrote. “Inspired by luminosity masks usually applied by professional photographers, in this paper, we develop a novel algorithm for learning local exposures with deep reinforcement adversarial learning.”

The new algorithm divides the whole process into image segmentation and “action-generation” stage. After segmentation, the second part starts with input low-resolution, sub-images, and direct fusion of the image takes place. All the photos are processed with each’s local and global exposures.

The new algorithm is created in Google’s TensorFlow framework on a Nvidia P40 Tesla GPU. Xiaomi team used the images from the MIT-Adobe FiveK dataset.

Xiaomi’s new DeepEposure AI algorithm outpaced all other algorithms present in the market.

Now, we hope this new algorithm will help Xiaomi devices to outperform other methods in terms of camera performance.
