OnePlus sets January 15, 2019 goal; Could it be a 5G phone?

OnePlus has today confirmed through its Weibo account that it has set a new goal for Jan. 15, 2019. The Weibo post carries an image of a OnePlus phone with the said date highlighted. It seems to be a big goal since the target has been set couple of months away. Since multiple smartphone manufacturers such as OnePlus, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi and Lenovo are aiming to release their first 5G phones in 2019. There is a possibility that OnePlus too could be planning to introduce a 5G phone in January next year.

OPPO and OnePlus belong to the same parent company named BBK Electronics. Hence, these companies are known for sharing their resources. This is the reason why both firms have launched similar phones in the recent past. The recently launched OnePlus 6 resembles the OPPO R15 in terms of design. Even the Dash Charge fast charging technology available on OnePlus phones is actually a version of VOOC rapid charging by OPPO.

In the previous week, OPPO’s assistant VP had claimed that his company could become the first manufacturer to mass produce a 5G smartphone in 2019. Also, in the same week, an image of a modified OPPO R15 with Snapdragon X50 LTE modem that supports 5G connectivity had surfaced on Weibo. Since OPPO is actively working on its 5G phone. Its breakthrough technology may help OnePlus to launch its 5G smartphone in the coming year. Around two months ago, a report had claimed that OnePlus 7 could be one of the first phones to support 5G connectivity.

OnePlus is known for introducing its new phones in the second quarter. However, the goal that has been set for Jan. 15 seems intriguing. OnePlus 6T is expected to debut later this year. Could there be a 5G edition of OnePlus 6T arriving at the beginning of 2019? Probably, the company could be planning to demonstrate its take on 5G connectivity through the upcoming Jan. 15 event. It is advisable to wait for further teasers and reports before coming to a conclusion.

Nubia Red Magic 2 is coming: will have Snapdragon 845 and shoulder buttons

Apart from notches being the trend this year, some manufacturers also jumped on the gaming smartphone train. One of them is Nubia with its Red Magic gaming smartphone.

The Nubia Red Magic has a nice design and packs impressive specs save for having last year’s Snapdragon 835 processor instead of the new Snapdragon 845. The older processor means it can’t match the performance of other gaming smartphones such as Xiaomi‘s Black Shark and ASUSROG gaming phone.

Nubia Red Magic Urban Camouflage

If the older processor is what’s putting you off from buying it, then you may be pleased to learn that Nubia is working on a successor which we will refer to as the Red Magic 2. The info comes from Roland Quandt.

In a tweet earlier today, he revealed that a new Red Magic device with a Snapdragon 845 is in the works. However, a new processor isn’t the only new thing. It will also have shoulder buttons.

There is no info on when the new phone will launch but Nubia will do well to launch it this year because doing so next year will just mean repeating the same pattern as this year’s model.

No Pixel smartwatch(es) this year says Google

If you have been putting off purchasing a new smartwatch due to news of Google launching its own this year, you may have to reconsider your decision. A new report has revealed that Google will not be launching a Pixel-branded smartwatch(es) or any smartwatch at all.

Google WearOS Watch

The report comes from an exclusive interview between tech blog Tom’s Guide Caitlin McGarry and Google’s Director of Wear OS, Miles Barr. Quoting Mr. Barr when asked about Google releasing a Pixel watch “To think of a one-size-fits-all watch, I don’t think we’re there yet. Our focus is on our partners for now.”

Google says its working with partners instead of making its own watch and some of the results of the partnership is the presence of heart rate sensors and NFC chips in new smartwatches. Other ways Google is said to be partnering with its partners is in design improvement.

In the interview, Mr. Barr says a likely Pixel watch will be heavily reliant on the Google Assistant so as to “integrate AI and machine learning into the device, which is Google’s forte”. Google will roll out a new version of Wear OS soon and the Google Assistant is expected to be a big part of it.

Apart from that, Google is also considering ditching version numbers when it comes to Wear OS. So, rather than waiting a whole year for the big update that brings new features and improvements, updates will come much earlier and regularly. We don’t know if this will begin with the new update coming soon but don’t be surprised if it isn’t called Wear OS 3.0.

To further confirm that there will be no Pixel watch(es), Tom’s Guide contacted Google and a PR representative confirmed that the tech giant will not be releasing its own watch this year.

Huawei finally launches its first smart speaker AI Cube alongside a GPS Locator

Almost a month ago, Samsung decided to join Amazon, Google, and Apple in the smart speakers club by unveiling the Galaxy Home. Now, at IFA 2018, even Huawei has announced its first smart speaker: its name is AI Cube. Even though it was made by the world’s second largest Android smartphone manufacturer, unlike Google Home, this smart speaker is not powered by Google Assistant, but it counts on Amazon Alexa just like Echo speakers. Thanks to it, it will be able to listen to the user’s vocal commands to answer questions, control smart home appliances, stream music and much more, by basing on a library with over 50,000 skills.

The new Huawei AI Cube will also double as a 4G router as it supports a 4G SIM tray with a max download speed of 300 Mbps, as well as dual band Wi-Fi network with speeds up to 1,200 Mbps. Despite all these features, the smart speaker does not renounce to the audio quality with its 400 ml sound cavity and the Histen tech providing virtual bass and adaptive gain control. According to the Chinese giant, it has high audio quality with deep bass and clear mid and high frequencies.

Alongside Huawei AI Cube, the company has also unveiled Huawei Locator, a small locator which relies on GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and Beidou signals to offer real-time geolocation of the user. This is very useful in case of emergencies and in places which are not reached by the telephone line. Further, it is fully waterproof thanks to the IP68 certification, so you can also bring it with you if you go swimming. It sports an SOS button which works while the locator is connected to a smartphone with a maximum distance of 10 meters. At the moment, there is still no info about pricing and availability of Huawei AI Cube and Locator.

Palm ‘Pepito’ to be world’s smallest phone with smallest battery

Recent leaks and reports have confirmed multiple times that Palm is planning a comeback in the smartphones market. In case you don’t know, this manufacturer hasn’t released a phone since 2011. According to a fresh report on AnroidPolice, this will be the smallest phone in the world but also the one with the smallest battery. From what sources are suggesting, it will sport a 3.3-inch display showing images at an HD resolution and a battery with a capacity of just 800 mAh. Even though the display is very small and it has a low resolution (so it will not consume a lot of energy), with a such a small small battery we do not expect the upcoming Palm phone to have a long battery life, especially if we consider its rumored specs.

But we also have to admit that in this sized phone there isn’t any room left for inserting a big battery. According to rumors, the phone is actually in the works and it is codenamed Pepito. It will be equipped with a low-end chipset: the octa-core Snapdragon 435 by Qualcomm. Despite being an entry-level SoC, this chipset is perfectly able to run Android in its standard edition: indeed, from what leaks suggested, this phone will not run Android Go.

Palm 2018 phone

The chipset is expected to be paired with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, but reports do not exclude the arrival of different memory configuration. Unfortunately, there will not be a headphone jack on the Palm Pepito. The device is expected to be released in 2018 in at least two color variants: titanium and gold. It is speculated that it will be launched in the U.S. market through the known carrier Verizon, while there is no info about it coming to other markets at the moment.
