Design is one of the areas that the company placed a special focus on this year. Overall, the OnePlus 13 has a refined new look. From the back, the first major difference you could tell is with the new camera module, which no longer blends into the metallic frame. The OnePlus 13 is also offered in three distinct options, which includes Silk Glass (White), skin-friendly velvet leather (Blue), and Obsidian (Black).

In comparison, the OnePlus 12 only offered glass back in different colors. There are changes not just to the form but also to its function. The 2024 OnePlus flagship arrives with an IP68/IP69 rating, which makes it more resistant to water and dust than the IP65 rating on the OnePlus 12.

2. Faster Performance

OnePlus hasn’t simply improved performance in the OnePlus 13 but also upgraded the cooling system with a massive 9925mm² VC cooling. It needs a robust thermal management system since the new flagship is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite.

This is a high end chip for next gen premium Android phones. The chip brings a 45% increase in CPU performance, a 44% boost in power efficiency, a 40% increase in GPU performance, and a 35% faster ray tracing as well. OnePlus launched the OnePlus 12 with a respectable 5,400mAh battery pack. It also supports 100W wired fast charging, 50W wireless fast charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging. While the charging rates have remained the same between the two generations, the OnePlus 13 packs a massive 6,000mAh battery capacity.

4. Cameras

Both models pack a triple camera setup on the rear, but the brand employs different image sensors. The OnePlus 12 packs a 50MP Sony LYT808 primary sensor with OIS, a 64MP OmniVision OV64B periscope telephoto shooter (OIS, 3x zoom), and a 48MP Sony IMX581 ultra wide angle lens with autofocus. The front houses a 32MP selfie shooter.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 13 features a 50MP Sony LYT808 main sensor with OIS, a 50MP LYT600 periscope telephoto with multi-prism reflective periscope structure (OIS, 3x zoom), and a 50MP 114° ultra wide Samsung S5KJN5 sensor. With October drawing to a close, the flagship smartphone frenzy of 2024 is nearing its end. While some brands like Huawei still keep their high-end devices under wraps, looks like we’re now gearing up for a wave of sub-flagship launches starting next month.

In a recent Weibo post, Digital Chat Station revealed the release windows for several smartphones expected to hit shelves by year-end.

Upcoming sub-flagships phone in 2024

The tipster suggests that November will bring the Realme GT 7 Pro, the iQOO Neo 10 series (including the Neo 10 and Neo 10 Pro), and the Redmi K80 series (with both K80 and K80 Pro variants). Notably, Realme has already confirmed the GT 7 Pro launch for November 4, 2024.

The leak also hints at possible November launches for Huawei’s flagship Mate 70 series and foldable Mate X6. OnePlus may release its Ace 5 series (initially just the Ace 5, with a Pro model to follow in mid-2025) in November or December.

Rounding out the year-end releases, Digital Chat Station suggests sub-flagship arrivals from Honor (300 series), Vivo (S20 series), OPPO (Reno 13 series), along with models from Nubia (Z70 Ultra), and Red Magic (10 series).

What’s confirmed so far

For the officially confirmed GT 7 Pro, Realme is teasing features like performance and camera capabilities. The phone will come equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and will include an 11,480mm² double-layer VC heat dissipation unit to manage thermals effectively.

On the front, it will have a 6.78-inch Samsung Eco² AMOLED display with a 1.5K resolution, 2000 nits peak brightness, and a color depth of 1073.74 million colors.

The camera department is handled by a 50MP IMX906 main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 50MP IMX882 periscope telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. A 16MP front camera is also available for selfies.

Keeping all these things powered is a large 6500mAh battery with 120W wired charging support.

1. iQOO 13 vs iQOO 12: Taller Screen with Higher Resolution

Back in 2023, the iQOO 12 was released with a 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED display that offers a 1.5K resolution (2800 x 1260 pixels), a 144Hz refresh rate, 2160Hz PWM dimming, and 3,000 nits of peak brightness. This was quite an impressive package considering its price. However, the iQOO 13 improves in nearly every aspect compared to its predecessor.

The iQOO 13 was announced with a slightly taller 6.82-inch 8T LTPO OLED panel. It has a higher 2K+ resolution (3168 x 1440 pixels), a 144Hz refresh rate, and up to 4,500 nits of peak brightness as well. The PWM dimming has a higher 2592Hz frequency as well.

Earlier this year, we found that the iQOO 12 was one of the best value Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phones in India. But despite the bigger battery, the iQOO 13 has a slimmed 7.99mm body. The only real downside is the 100W fast charging support on the newer flagship phone.

Your Exynos-powered Galaxy device could be at risk of being hacked

Samsung has issued a security alert about a high-risk vulnerability affecting a range of Exynos-powered Galaxy devices, including smartphones and smartwatches.

The exploit, which has been under investigation for several weeks, could potentially allow unauthorized actors to gain control over affected devices. Samsung is urging users with Exynos chipsets to update to the latest security patch to protect against this vulnerability.

Exynos chips and devices at risk

The affected chips include the Exynos 9820, Exynos 9825, Exynos 980, Exynos 990, Exynos 850, and Exynos W920. This vulnerability impacts multiple Samsung Galaxy models, including popular lines such as the Galaxy S20, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy Note 10 series, as well as the Galaxy A21, Galaxy A51, and Galaxy A71.

Additionally, certain wearables, such as the Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 5, and Galaxy Watch FE, are also at risk.

Details of the vulnerability

The vulnerability allows attackers to gain system-level access to a device and execute unauthorized code, potentially exposing sensitive user information such as banking details, personal messages, and photos. Google’s Threat Analysis Group reports that malicious actors exploited this vulnerability by disguising the malicious code as a Samsung process, making it difficult to detect during regular system scans. This concealment technique allowed hackers to maintain persistence on compromised devices without immediate detection.

While Samsung has not revealed the identity of the attackers or the scope of the incidents, Google’s security experts note that foreign actors have already successfully exploited this vulnerability in multiple cases.

MediaTek Dimensity 8400 may adopt all big-core designs like Snapdragon 8 Elite

Less than a month after the Dimensity 9400 launch, we already have a couple of flagship devices featuring this processor. More are expected to launch later this year and in 2025. While the Dimensity 9400 is MediaTek’s flagship offering, we also expect a sub-premium Dimensity 8400 SoC from MediaTek by the end of the year.

A well-known tipster on Weibo, Digital Chat Station, now has revealed the first details about the processor’s core structure.

MediaTek Dimensity 8400 Specifications

According to DCS, the Dimensity 8400 will use TSMC’s 4nm manufacturing process, the same as its predecessor. However, the real highlight of the SoC could be its “full-core” or all-big-core architecture.

MediaTek embraced the all-big core design for its SoCs, starting with the Dimensity 9300. The Dimensity 9400 continues this trend, and Qualcomm has also announced its latest flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Elite, with an all-big-core design.

If the new leak from DCS is accurate, MediaTek may introduce a similar architecture for the Dimensity 8400. The prime core in this SoC appears to be the new ARM Cortex-A725.

With this new architecture, the tipster claims the SoC will achieve an AnTuTu benchmark score between 1.7 and 1.8 million. For reference, the tipster notes that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 scores around 1.6 million, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 scores about 2 million. This means the Dimensity 8400 will outperform the 8 Gen 2 and get closer to the performance levels of the 8 Gen 3.

While MediaTek has not announced a launch date for the Dimensity 8400, the SoC recently appeared in Xiaomi’s HyperOS codebase. This suggests that either a Xiaomi, Redmi, or Poco device featuring the chip is in development. The chipset carries the model number “MT6899.”

Today, iQOO revealed that this latest flagship model has set a new first-day sales record, surpassing all of its previous devices launched by the brand.

While the brand has not shared the exact number of units sold on the first day, netizens have pointed out that its starting price is likely a big factor in this achievement. The iQOO 13 launched with a 3999 yuan (~$561) starting price tag for the 12GB + 256GB model, which is the same starting price as its predecessor, the iQOO 12.

This decision from the brand was unexpected, as many anticipated price increases for all smartphones featuring the new Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, which reportedly costs 25-30% more than its predecessor. Last year, the brand announced the Redmi K70e, K70, and K70 Pro in November. While reports have revealed the existence of the Redmi K80 and K80 Pro models, there is no clarity that there will be a Redmi K80e device this year. Additionally, the model 2412DRT0AC, which has yet to receive 3C certification, is identified as the Redmi Turbo 4 in the IMEI database. The global version of this device is listed as 2412DPC0AG, and the Indian variant is 2412DPC0AI, both of which will be marketed as the Poco F7.
