Uber and BYD announce a partnership that’ll bring 100,000 EVs into the ridesharing platform

BYD and ride-sharing service Uber have announced a new partnership that will see BYD delivering 100,000 EVs to the Uber network. The two companies are upbeat that the massive collaboration will accelerate the integration of electric vehicles into the passenger and ride-hailing/ sharing segment. BYD continues to square up with Tesla for the top spot in the EV market despite a stringent tariff regime preventing it from entering the lucrative US market.

BYD partners with Uber

The Uber-BYD engagement is a multi-year strategic partnership that will see BYD delivering 100,000 EVs onto the Uber platform across several countries. The markets cover Europe, the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and Latin America. The project will start with some key markets in Europe and Latin America. In a press statement jointly signed by both companies, it was revealed that the duo is working together to bring down the total cost of EV ownership for Uber drivers. The move is targeted at accelerating the uptake of EVs on the Uber network on a global scale. The move is also aimed at introducing millions of riders to ‘greener rides’.

The agreement, according to Uber’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, is the largest global agreement of its kind. It comes with great prospects for the two companies and will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of Uber drivers who switch to EVs. EVs can deliver up to four times the emission benefits compared to a regular ICE Uber car. Last January, Uber announced it was working with Tesla to enhance the accessibility of EVs to its drivers. The move was aimed at enhancing the adoption of EVs by Uber drivers and a $2,000 incentive was on offer for its drivers who wanted to switch.

BYD cars on display at the 2023 Munich Auto Show

It is noted that there could be several challenges drivers face in trying to transition to electric vehicles in their Uber ride-sharing service. The cost of ownership and access to convenient charging infrastructure are major impediments to such programs. It remains therefore to be seen how Uber and BYD will make the new strategy attractive to drivers on the Uber network.

Huawei introduces 40 HarmonyOS NEXT games at ChinaJoy

Huawei made a notable impact at this year’s ChinaJoy, China’s top digital entertainment expo. The company showcased over 40 video games running on HarmonyOS Next, the latest version of its mobile operating system.

HarmonyOS Next, which no longer supports Android apps, is set to launch commercially with Huawei’s upcoming Mate 70 flagship 5G smartphone series later this year.

Some featured games at ChinaJoy (July 26-29) included Crystal of Atlan by ByteDance, Naraka: Bladepoint Mobile by NetEase, Reverse: 1999 by Guangzhou-based Bluepoch, and Sky: Children of the Light by US studio Thatgamecompany.

Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT 40 games

This year was Huawei’s first time with a central booth at ChinaJoy, strategically placed within the Shanghai New International Expo Centre.

According to the South China Morning Post, long lines formed at the HarmonyOS booth’s four dedicated sections. Attendees participated in interactive activities, received promotional gifts, and played games on Huawei’s latest smartphones.

“It was great to see Naraka: Bladepoint Mobile, a personal favorite, running on the new system,” said Xu Xiaoyi, a 25-year-old Shanghai resident. Xu, who originally planned to visit NetEase’s booth, was drawn to Huawei’s display and hoped more international titles would support HarmonyOS Next in the future. This growing interest in the platform and its native apps was evident, with the event attracting 369,000 visitors.

Huawei’s presence at ChinaJoy highlights the company’s efforts to build excitement for HarmonyOS Next. The current version has already surpassed Apple’s iOS to become the second-largest mobile operating system in mainland China in the first quarter of 2024.

Launched in August 2019 as an alternative to Android, HarmonyOS emerged in response to US trade restrictions on Huawei. These restrictions, imposed by the Entity List, prevent the company from acquiring US-origin software, chips, and other technologies without government approval.

Samsung chief is not happy about its Mobile division’s product development

Samsung has launched the Galaxy Buds 3 series and the Galaxy Watch 7 series alongside the 6th generation foldable at the company’s second unpacked event.

The official asked the MX Division to “Re-do Management Diagnosis”

Samsung’s chairman Lee Jae-yong is known within Samsung Electronics for his gentle personality, who “rarely gets angry”. This time he strictly ordered the company’s mobile division, Samsung MX, to reexamine its management. This reportedly stems from the accusations that Samsung is copying its competitor Apple when it comes to the design of some of the recently launched products.

The Galaxy Buds 3 series came with a similar design to its biggest competitor alongside widespread quality control issues

There were also some serious quality control issues with the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro. The company had to exchange the earbuds or refund the users. On top of that, the design of the Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro has shifted from the company’s iconic design to one that looks and feels somewhat similar to Apple’s offering. For those unfamiliar, there’s an image below that gives a better idea of the similarity in design.

Upon seeing the Galaxy Buds 3, a reporter commented “Apple-like”. Another reporter who has been using Galaxy products for a long time felt that it was similar to AirPods. Someone who is using AirPods criticized, saying, “The appearance, case, and even the fit are too similar to Apple.”

Alongside the similarity in shape, people feel like the media controls are also inspired by its biggest competitor. The Galaxy Buds 3 has a function that allows you to play or pause music by pressing the stem, not the earbud. In particular, the Buds 3 Pro can control the volume by swiping up and down the stem. The AirPods Pro 2 launched back in 2022 uses the same method.

The $649 Galaxy Watch Ultra has also seen a paint peeling issue within just days of use

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra combines a circular display inside a rectangular frame, which is a big departure from the Galaxy Watch’s traditional circular design. While it still boasts a circular display, some people may find the square design and the naming similar to the Apple Watch Ultra. On top of that, a Reddit user has shared images of his watch suffering from a paint-peeling issue, which you can learn more about here.

For Rs 89,999 is the Honor Magic 6 Pro worth it?

Honor Magic 6 Pro finally launched in India as the brand’s latest and greatest flagship smartphone. It arrives with a premium design and top notch specs and features. But for an exorbitant price tag of 89,999 INR in India, is it really worth it?

Honor Magic 6 Pro

1. What do you get for 90K INR?

The 90,000 INR price tag may seem justified at first glance looking at the specs sheet of this device. HTech’s Honor Magic 6 Pro sports a tall 6.8-inch curved LTPO OLED display that offers an FHD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision, HDR, 1 billion colors, and 5000 nits of peak brightness. The smartphone has a glass back or an eco leather panel. It also has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

Under the hood, the Magic 6 Pro is equipped with Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. This chipset is paired with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage (12GB + 512GB in India). The rear features a triple camera setup that consists of a 50-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultra wide angle lens, and a 180-megapixel telephoto shooter (2.5x Optical Zoom). Meanwhile, the front houses a 50-megapixel selfie shooter and a ToF 3D sensor.

A massive 5,600mAh battery pack powers this model, which supports 80W wired fast charging, 66W wireless fast charging, and reverse wireless charging. Other notable features include an under-display fingerprint scanner, Face ID, Bluetooth 5.3, USB 3.2, stereo speakers, and emergency SOS communication via satellite connectivity (messages and calls). Lastly, the Honor Magic 6 Pro runs on the Android 14 OS based MagicOS 8 custom skin out of the box.

2. So why is it a bit difficult to recommend?

Honor’s Magic 6 Pro has been well received in the market (click here to check out our video review). So it’s a great premium offering from the Chinese brand. So is it worth it? Yes, but it depends on where you’re buying this model from. The Magic 6 Pro launched in China for a starting price tag of 5699 Yuan (roughly 793 US Dollars or 66,417 INR), meanwhile, the 16GB + 512GB option costs 6,199 Yuan (roughly 873 US Dollars or 73,117 INR). But in India, it only comes in a lone 12GB + 512GB option that has an 89,999 INR price tag or about 1,075 US Dollars. This is an over 200 US Dollar price difference in the Indian market.

3. Where else can you buy it from & why is it costlier in India?

To avoid paying the imported premium, there are options in other countries that are also cheaper. A great example of this is Dubai (UAE). The same 12GB + 512GB configuration is sold for 3,499 AED or about 953 US Dollars. This is still 120 US Dollars cheaper than the Indian listing. There is also a simple reason why it’s more expensive in India. HTech’s Honor Magic 6 Pro isn’t assembled in the region and is fully imported. So it faces an import duty when it is shipped from overseas.

Realme GT 6T 5G gets a massive discount of ₹6300

The Realme GT 6T was launched earlier this year, in May, with a starting price of Rs. 30,999. It is the first smartphone launched in India with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 processor.

The company will reportedly push the stable version before the end of September this year. Of course, the rollout date of the stable version will be different for different models.

Xiaomi is already working on the next big HyperOS version, HyperOS 2.0, which is expected to be released with the Xiaomi 15 series. For those unfamiliar, the Xiaomi 15 series will most likely be released in Q4 this year.

POCO C75 Bags FCC And EEC Certifications, Launch Imminent

Yesterday we exclusively reported that the POCO C75 appeared in the IMEI database confirming its moniker. Now, the device has been spotted on the FCC certification website. It has also bagged EEC certification. The listings hint at an imminent launch of the smartphone. The upcoming offering is expected to arrive as the successor to last year’s POCO C65. Read on to learn more details below.

POCO C75 bags FCC

The POCO C75 is listed on the FCC website with the model number 2410FPCC5G. It reveals that the smartphone will run on HyperOS 1.0 based on Android 14. The device will come with LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, and NFC connectivity. The certification does not reveal any additional details about the smartphone. The EEC listing suggests that the device will launch in the European markets.

Details about the POCO C75 are very scarce at the moment. We can expect the device to bag more certifications and surface in leaks and rumors in the coming weeks. In our previous report, we mentioned that as per the HyperOS source code, the POCO C75 has internal model numbers C3N and C3NL. It mentions the Helio G81 processor but we assume that this could be an error because it is a downgraded chipset compared to the G85 that powers the C65.

To recall, the POCO C65 has a 6.7-inch 90Hz display with an HD+ resolution. It has a 50MP and 2MP rear camera along with an 8MP selfie snapper. The device is equipped with a Helio G85 processor. It packs up to 8GB RAM and 256GB onboard storage. The smartphone draws its power from a 5,000mAh battery unit with support for 18W fast charging via USB-C port.

HMD Barbie flip phone launch date teased, Spotted getting certified

Earlier this year, HMD announced that it is working on its very own flip phone. What sets this model apart is its collaboration with Barbie. Now, we finally have an official launch date for this HMD Barbie Flip Phone and also a sighting on a certification platform.

HMD Barbie Flip Phone Launch

To recall, the upcoming HMD phone was announced with the iconic Barbie branding and a DIY development platform, which shipped with the HMD Crest lineup. While finer details regarding this device are still unclear, the company has revealed its launch date. The HMD Barbie Flip phone is set to launch on 28th August 2024. Ahead of the release date, the flip phone has surfaced on the Elements Certification. This database confirms its charging related specifications.

HMD Barbie Flip Phone

HMD’s Barbie Flip phone was spotted carrying the TA-1681 model number. It was seen with support for just 5W charging (5Vdc x 1A). The handset is a feature phone and is rumored to be a rebranded version of the Nokia 2660 Flip model. However, it will arrive in a hot pink color option. This is clearly visible in the teaser poster shared on the brand’s X handle (formerly Twitter). We can also see the “Barbie” branding clearly on the cover screen.

Notably, the Nokia 2660 Flip was a phone that launched back in 2023. It packed a 2.8-inch display and a hearing aid compatibility. The phone also came with support for India’s UPI digital scan and pay functionality. This model came in a lush green and pink offering. So the new launch is likely a special edition variant. Other notable features include dual 4G SIM, VoLTE, and a 1450mAh battery pack.

Vivo X200 Pro rumored to pack 6,000mAh battery

Vivo is expected to launch its next flagship smartphone, the X200 series, sometime in October. We’ve been covering reports from various sources revealing the phone’s specs. Today, a reliable tipster, Digital Chat Station (DCS), has shared details about the battery of the larger Pro model.

The X200 series is rumored to be the first commercially available phone series powered by the upcoming MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset.

DCS previously tipped the size difference between the models, with the standard X200 featuring a compact 6.4-inch or 6.5-inch display, while the X200 Pro will have a larger 6.7-inch screen. According to the latest leak, the X200 Pro may come with a large battery that will exceed 6,000mAh in capacity.

Packing such a large battery could raise concerns about the weight and thickness of the devices. However, DCS suggests that Vivo might use the same fiberglass material for the body as the recently launched X Fold 3 series to mitigate these issues.

Besides the battery, previous leaks suggest that the X200 Pro will feature a 2K resolution display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen is expected to have a micro-curved design on all four sides and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for added security.

In terms of camera, the X200 Pro is rumored to include a custom-made 22nm Sony 50-megapixel primary sensor with a large 1/1.28-inch size and a wide f/1.57 aperture. This primary sensor will likely be paired with a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens and a high-resolution 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera offering 3x optical zoom.

While these leaks suggest impressive capabilities for the X200 Pro, it’s important to note that Vivo hasn’t confirmed the official specifications yet. We’ll need to wait for Vivo’s official announcement in October to confirm these details and see the final package the X200 Pro offers.

The standard Pixel 9 still offers a dual camera setup on the back. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold also appears to have a triple camera setup on the back similar to the Pixel 9 Pro.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold

The Pixel 9 could offer a 6.3″ “Actua” display, which is slightly bigger than the 6.2″ one of its predecessor. The main camera and the ultrawide reportedly boast 50MP and 48MP sensors inside respectively. For context, the ultrawide is upgraded from 12MP. The phone uses a 10.5MP selfie camera similar to its predecessor. There is no more reliable information about the sensors at this point.

While the renders show a total of three models, according to a previous rumor, there are a total of four models in the Pixel 9 series – Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

PlayStation Portal launched in India: Sony’s remote play console drops for Rs 18,990

Sony unveiled the PlayStation Portal last year as a Remote Player for its PlayStation 5 gaming console. Now, the company has just announced this handheld in the Indian market. The PlayStation Portal lets you play your PS5 games over your home Wi-Fi and promises to offer a console level experience in a portable form factor.

Sony PlayStation Portal Specs

Sony’s handheld basically looks like a DualSense controller with an 8-inch LCD display slapped on it. The device can connect to PlayStation 5 seamlessly and remotely turn on the console with a press of a button. Users can then start to play their favorite games on this gadget with minimal delay. The PlayStation Portal connects to your home’s WiFi, so you can experience console gaming without needing a TV.

PlayStation Portal

This screen has a FHD resolution and 60Hz refresh rate. It is compatible with both PS5 and PS4 games (need to be running on PS5). However, the Portal does not support VR headset required games, titles that require peripheral gadgets, or PS Plus Premium streamed games. Just like the conventional DualSense Wireless controller, the handheld supports haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. It is worth noting that your PS5 needs to be powered on or in Rest Mode to be paired with the Remote Player.

Pricing and Availability

Sony’s new PlayStation Portal Remote Player is priced at 18,990 INR (roughly 227 US Dollars). It will be available for purchase starting from 3rd August 2024. You can purchase this device at Sony Centers, Flipkart, Amazon, Vijay Sales, Reliance, Croma, BlinkIt, and other partner retailers.

Last year, I wrote a piece regarding the PlayStation Portal, talking more in-depth about this handheld. Some aspects didn’t make sense and I wished for PlayStation Plus support on this device. But that does not seem to be the case.
