Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Which foldable is better?

Samsung‘s Galaxy Z Fold series has become synonymous with foldable smartphones. However, as the market matures, we’re seeing strong alternatives from Chinese brands like Xiaomi.

Take the Xiaomi Mix Fold 4, for instance. It’s a thinner foldable compared to  Galaxy Z Fold 6 while delivering other specs that are on par with or even better than Samsung’s offering.

With the new Mix Fold 4 on the shelves, you might wonder if it is better than the Z Fold 6. So let’s break down the key differences to help you decide which one is a better foldable overall.

1. Design & Display

Design-wise, the Mix Fold 4 is thinner when folded, measuring 9.5mm compared to the Z Fold 6’s 12.1mm, making it more comfortable to hold for extended periods and easier to fit in a pocket.

However, the Z Fold 6 excels in ingress protection with an IP48 water and dust rating. In contrast, the Mix Fold 4 has an IPX8 rating, meaning it can only withstand splashes but not dust.

Both phones feature large, foldable AMOLED displays with 120Hz refresh rates for smooth scrolling and gaming. The Mix Fold 4 has a slight advantage in size, offering a 7.98-inch main display compared to the Z Fold 6’s 7.6-inch panel.

The Mix Fold 4 also has a larger cover display at 6.56 inches, compared to the Z Fold 6’s 6.3-inch display. But both utilize LTPO technology for adaptive refresh rates and to optimize battery life.

Resolution-wise, the Mix Fold 4 offers a slightly higher pixel count with 2224 x 2488 pixels compared to the Z Fold 6’s 1856 x 2160 pixels. However, the difference in pixel density is negligible, and both devices should deliver excellent visual clarity.

In terms of durability, the Z Fold 6’s cover display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2, while Xiaomi uses its own proprietary Shield Glass. Both main screens have a layer of ultra-thin glass (UTG) for added protection.

2. Performance & Battery

Both phones are powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, delivering top-tier performance for demanding tasks and gaming. The storage options are also identical, ranging from 256GB to 1TB, paired with either 12GB or 16GB of RAM.

On the software side, the Mix Fold 4 runs Android 14 with Xiaomi’s HyperOS, while the Z Fold 6 uses Android 14 with Samsung’s One UI 6.1.1. Both operating systems are optimized for the foldable form factor, offering features like split-screen multitasking and seamless app continuity between folded and unfolded modes.

The Z Fold 6 also boasts S Pen support, a valuable tool for note-taking and creative workflows on the larger display. However, its absence on the Mix Fold 4 might not be a dealbreaker for all users.

The Mix Fold 4 has a larger 5100mAh battery compared to the Z Fold 6’s 4400mAh battery. However, the Z Fold 6 supports slower 25W wired charging compared to Mix Fold 4’s 67W support. You also get a wireless charging option but Mix Fold 4 is again faster at 50W while the Z Fold 6 has just a 15W solution.

3. Camera

The camera setups on these phones diverge significantly. The Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 boasts a quad-camera system on the rear, featuring a 50MP main sensor, a 50MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, a 10MP periscope telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultrawide sensor.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 takes a more streamlined approach with a triple-camera system. It features a 50MP main sensor, a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultrawide sensor. This makes it clear that the Mix Fold 4 offers more versatility with its additional telephoto lens, at least in terms of hardware.

Both phones offer a single selfie camera on the cover display and an under-display selfie camera on the main screen. However, the Mix Fold 4 utilizes a higher resolution 16MP sensor on both its cover and under-display cameras compared to the Z Fold 6’s 10MP cover camera and 4MP under-display camera.

4. Price & Availability

Before we go into prices, note that Xiaomi’s Mix Fold 4 is currently only available in the Chinese market, where prices are comparatively lower than on the global scene.

The Mix Fold 4 starts at CNY 8,999 (~$1,237) for the base 12GB + 256GB variant. The 16GB + 512GB and 16GB + 1TB configurations are priced at CNY 9,999 (~$1,375) and CNY 10,999 (~$1,513), respectively. However, these prices are expected to increase if Xiaomi decides to launch the Mix Fold 4 globally, though this is unlikely.

In comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is $1,900 for the 12GB + 256GB variant, $2,020 for the 16GB + 512GB, and $2,260 for the 16GB + 1TB model.

5. Conclusion

The Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 is a strong competitor to Samsung’s reign over the foldable phone market. However, for now, the battle is limited to the Chinese market as the Mix Fold 4 isn’t available globally yet.

This is just a head-to-head breakdown of how the latest foldable flagships from these giants stack up. To learn more about Mix Fold 4, check out our unboxing and initial impressions video below.

Unveiled alongside the Mix Fold 4 at a recent event in China, the Mix Flip has garnered significant attention for its impressive specifications and design. In this article, we delve into the unique features that make the Xiaomi Mix Flip a standout device in the increasingly competitive flip phone market.

Xiaomi Mix Flip

1. Large Inner Display

The Mix Flip comes with a 6.86-inch 1.5K 1-120Hz AMOLED internal display. The inner display size is bigger than the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and just slightly shorter than the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra.

The display features a 120Hz refresh rate and it also boasts a peak brightness of 3000 nits which is very similar to the Razr 50 Ultra but the 50 Ultra beats it with a 165Hz refresh rate which is not a big deal breaker though. The display also features HDR10 +, Dolby Vision.

2. Highly Functional Cover Display

The Xiaomi Mix Flip boasts an impressive 4-inch cover display, significantly larger than competitors, and offering unprecedented functionality for a flip phone. This expansive cover screen features a high-quality 1.5K panel with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 3000 nits.

When compared to the Razr 50 Ultra, the cover display of the Mix Flip is quite similar. However, it stands out significantly against the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which features a smaller 3.4-inch cover display that is limited to a 60Hz refresh rate.

Xiaomi positions the Mix Flip as a standalone “compact phone,” capable of handling various tasks without opening the device. It supports over 200 popular apps and customizable widgets.

The external display supports comprehensive gestures, notifications, and even a full-display keyboard. It also comes with widgets like time, weather, step count, music control, and recently used apps that provide quick access to essential information. The display also automatically switches to a focus notification display for services like taxis, food delivery, and flights, keeping you updated with real-time information.

Both the inner and outer displays are protected by Xiaomi Shield Glass and UTG ultra-thin flexible glass, respectively. Additionally, it boasts a robust build quality with a 6M42 aluminum alloy middle frame.

5. Leica-Backed Camera System

The Mix Flip doesn’t compromise on camera quality. It boasts a dual rear camera system co-engineered with Leica, featuring a 50MP Light Fusion 800 main sensor with optical image stabilization and a 50MP telephoto lens offering 2x zoom.

It can also capture close-up shots with a minimum focusing distance of just 9cm. For selfies, there’s a 32MP front camera housed in a punch-hole cutout. The device also includes Master Portrait mode and supports shooting at four different focal lengths.

The camera system leverages Xiaomi’s AISP large model computational photography platform, supporting advanced imaging scenarios with up to 60 TOPS of processing power.

6. Long-Lasting Battery and Fast Charging

Meta applies for a patent that allegedly replicates Apple Vision Pro’s EyeSight feature

Apple launched its premium VR headset, the Apple Vision Pro, in February this year. One of the notable features of Apple’s VR headset is called EyeSight, where a display mimics the wearer’s eyes to make the user’s interaction with the real seem more natural. According to Apple “EyeSight reveals your eyes on the front of your Apple Vision Pro, and lets those nearby know when you’re using apps or are fully immersed in an experience.”

Meta is expected to replicate Apple’s EyeSight feature for its future VR headsets

Now the news is that Meta has applied for a patent that is somewhat similar to Apple’s EyeSight feature. You can see the patent illustration below. Reportedly, Meta aims to replicate the EyeSight feature which is far from being perfect on its own.

Image: Patently Apple

Meta‘s patent abstract notes that it is a method for updating a subject avatar with a facial expression collected in real-time. The method includes receiving, from a sensor on the facial interface of a headset, a signal indicative of a movement in a facial muscle from a user of the headset. The process involves determining the facial expression of the user with the signal from the sensor in the facial interface of the headset, based on a machine learning algorithm trained to associate the facial expression with the movement of the facial muscle.

Then it adjusts a subject avatar for the user of the headset based on the facial expression and provides the subject avatar to an immersive reality application hosted by a remote server.

The headset will reportedly include various sensors such as ECG, EEG, and PPG sensors to assess the cardiovascular conditions of a user.

One of the limitations of VR headsets like the Meta Quest 3 or the Apple Vision Pro is that the wearer becomes disconnected (sort of) from the real world. According to Apple, they developed EyeSight to maintain the connection of the wearers with the real world.

While it’s common for companies to take inspiration from the developments and achievements of their competitors, the jaw-dropping aspect of the whole development is that it emerged only a couple of months after Zuckerburg himself claimed that its Quest headset stands tall against the Vision Pro in a variety of aspects.

Leaked Render Reveals Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro XL In Pink And Porcelain Colors

Google is gearing up to unveil the next-generation Pixel smartphones and smartwatch on August 13 which is quite earlier than its traditional launch timeline. Leaks and rumors have been gathering pace about the search giant’s upcoming hardware offerings. Now, a new clear render of the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL shared by tipster Sudhanshu Ambhore gives us a look at both devices in two shades.

Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro XL new leaked render

The Pixel 9 was spotted in a leaked live image earlier this month revealing the device in a Pink color. The latest render gives us a much better look in the same shade. The shade on the horizontal camera island is slightly different from the rest of the back panel. The Pink color option on the Pixel 9 is a welcome move from the mainstream Black, Blue, and Green found on most smartphones today.

Meanwhile, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is seen in Porcelain color which is not any different from the last year’s Pixel 8 Pro. We could spot a periscope lens housed inside the pill-shaped island. There is also a temperature sensor placed beneath the LED flash unit.

The key design difference between last year’s Pixel 8 series and the upcoming Pixel 9 lineup is that the latter is set to feature a boxy design with a flat frame as per leaked renders. The horizontal camera bridge has been trimmed from the sides. Apart from this, the Pixel 9 series is rumoured to be powered by a Tensor G4 chipset and up to 16GB RAM.

Leaked prices suggest that the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro may start at EUR 899 and EUR 1,099 for the base 128GB model respectively. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is tipped to carry a starting price tag of EUR 1,199 for the same base variant as its other siblings.
