The History of the Ace Series: From Oppo to OnePlus

The Ace series has a fascinating history, starting as a performance-oriented series under Oppo and eventually finding its home within OnePlus. This evolution is marked by strategic decisions, market trends, and the desire to cater to a specific segment of smartphone users seeking flagship-level performance at more affordable prices.

The Birth of Oppo Ace: Answering the Call for Affordable Performance

In 2019, the smartphone landscape was witnessing a surge in popularity for “flagship killers” – devices that offered high-end specifications and features at a fraction of the cost of premium flagships. The Poco F1, with its powerful Snapdragon 845 processor and aggressive pricing, was a prime example of this trend.

Oppo, recognizing the growing demand for such devices, introduced the Ace series under its Reno brand. The Oppo Reno Ace, launched in October 2019, was the inaugural device in this series. It boasted a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 855+ processor, a 90Hz AMOLED display, and 65W SuperVOOC fast charging – features typically reserved for more expensive flagship phones.

The Reno Ace was positioned as a performance powerhouse aimed at tech-savvy consumers and gamers who sought uncompromising performance without breaking the bank. It was also designed to compete with emerging players like iQOO, a Vivo sub-brand that was making waves with its own performance-focused smartphones.

A Separate Identity and a Discontinued Journey

Following the success of the Reno Ace, Oppo decided to give the Ace series a separate identity, detaching it from the Reno brand. The Oppo Ace 2, launched in April 2020, further solidified the series’ reputation for delivering exceptional performance and value.

However, despite the positive reception, Oppo made the surprising decision to discontinue the Ace series in late 2020. This move left many fans disappointed and sparked speculation about the reasons behind the decision. Some analysts suggested that Oppo might be shifting its focus to other product lines or consolidating its brand portfolio.

The OnePlus Revival: Rebranding for the Online Market

In 2022, OnePlus, a subsidiary of Oppo, announced the revival of the Ace series under its own brand. This move was seen as a strategic decision to strengthen OnePlus’ presence in the online market, particularly in China, where the brand had been facing stiff competition from rivals like Xiaomi and Realme.

The OnePlus Ace, launched in April 2022, marked the series’ return. It retained the core philosophy of offering flagship-level performance at competitive prices. Notably, the OnePlus Ace was rebranded as the OnePlus 10R in India and other global markets, further expanding the reach of the series.

The OnePlus Ace Pro, released later that year, further elevated the series with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor and an even faster 150W charging solution. This model also marked a rebranding effort outside of China, where it was launched as the OnePlus 10T.

Continuing the Tradition: Special Editions and Global Appeal

One of the hallmarks of the Ace series, both under Oppo and OnePlus, has been the release of special editions. These limited-edition models often feature unique designs, collaborations with popular brands, or exclusive colorways, catering to the diverse tastes of consumers.

OnePlus has continued this tradition with the Ace series, launching special editions like the OnePlus Ace Pro Genshin Impact Limited Edition and the OnePlus Ace Racing Edition. These models not only appeal to fans of specific games or themes but also create buzz and excitement around the series.

The Ace series has also gained a global following, thanks to the rebranding strategy employed by OnePlus. While the Ace name is primarily used in China, the rebranded models like the OnePlus 10R have been well-received in other markets, including India, Europe, and North America.

Expanding the Ace Family: Ace 2, Ace 2 Pro, and Ace 3

The Ace series continued its expansion in 2023 with the release of the OnePlus Ace 2. This model adopted a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor and offered 100W fast charging, catering to users seeking a balance between performance and affordability. It was rebranded as the OnePlus 11R in global markets.

The OnePlus Ace 2 Pro, released in August 2023, pushed the boundaries further by offering up to an unprecedented 24GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, and a 150W fast charging solution. This model remained exclusive to the Chinese market.

The OnePlus Ace 3 was launched in China in January 2024, featuring a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and up to 16GB RAM of RAM. It was later introduced to global markets as the OnePlus 12R.

Looking to the Future: Ace 3 Pro

Now it’s time for the upcoming OnePlus Ace 3 Pro which is anticipated to continue the legacy of powerful performance, innovative features, and competitive pricing.

Early leaks suggest it may boast a 6,100mAh battery with 100W charging, up to 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM, 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage, and a triple camera unit with a 50-megapixel primary sensor

Leaked images on Weibo provide a glimpse of its design, showcasing a round camera module and a curved-edge OLED screen with 1.5K resolution in white and blue color options.

The leaked images also highlight the Ace 3 Pro’s DisplayMate A+ rating, promising enhanced eye protection and improvements in display quality, brightness, eye comfort, lifespan, and smoothness. The device will be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.

A new leak, courtesy of tipster Digital Chat Station, reveals that the brand is also working on another Z9-series phone for the Chinese market. Here is a look at the first details about the device.

According to DCS, the iQOO Z9 Turbo+ phone is coming soon to the Chinese market. Unfortunately, the leaker did not reveal anything else about the device. Another tech blogger has claimed that the device will come equipped with the Dimensity 9300+ chipset.

To recall, the brand unveiled the Vivo V30 series of smartphones in various markets, including Europe, earlier this year. The Vivo V30 Pro arrived as the first-ever V-series phone with a ZEISS co-engineered imaging system. This time around, the standard V40 features the ZEISS professional mobile imaging experience. Here is a look at how the V40 stacks up against the V30.

VIvo V40 vs Vivo V30
VIvo V40 vs Vivo V30

1. Vivo V40 vs Vivo V30: Design and Display

From the front, the Vivo V40 and V30 have an identical look, as both phones are equipped with a curved-edge AMOLED panel with a centrally aligned punch-hole. The V30’s back panel has a rectangular camera module that houses three cameras and a square-shaped Aura LED flash. On the other hand, the V40 has a large pill-shaped module, which houses three cameras and a ring LED flash.

The V40 measures 164.16 x 74.93 x 7.58 mm and weighs 190 grams , while the V30 is slightly lighter at 186 grams with dimensions of 164.36 x 75.1 x 7.45mm. Both phones feature a glass back cover. The V30 comes in three shades: Peacock Green, Andaman Blue, and Classic Black. While the V30 is an IP64-rated device, the V40 offers superior IP68-rated dust and water resistance. The V40 comes in two options: Stellar Silver and Nebula Purple.

The AMOLED display of both devices is 6.78 inches with a resolution of 2800 × 1260 pixels. However, the V40 boasts a higher local peak brightness of 4500 nits compared to the V30’s 2800 nits, enhancing visibility in bright environments. Both models support a 120 Hz refresh rate and have an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

2. Vivo V40 vs Vivo V30: Performance

Both devices are powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset. The V40 offers two RAM options, 8 GB and 12 GB, both of which utilize LPDDR4X technology, with UFS 2.2 for 256 GB of internal storage. In contrast, the V30 provides similar RAM options but comes with fixed ROM capacities of 128 GB and 256 GB, also using UFS 2.2.

A notable upgrade in the V40 is its 5,500 mAh battery compared to the V30’s 5,000 mAh battery. Both models support 80W fast charging.

3. Vivo V40 vs. Vivo V30: Cameras and Other Features

Both phones feature a 50-megapixel front camera with autofocus. On the rear, they share an OIS-assisted 50-megapixel main camera and a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera. The V30 also features a 2-megapixel macro camera on the back, whereas a flicker sensor in the V40 has replaced it.

On the connectivity front, the Vivo V40 supports a broader range of 5G bands (n1/n2/n3/n5/n7/n8/n20/n26/n28/n38/n40/n41/n66/n75/n77/n78) compared to the V30 (n1/n3/n5/n8/n28/n77/n78). Both phones support dual nano SIMs with 5G dual standby and have similar connectivity options, including Bluetooth 5.4 and dual-band Wi-Fi. Lastly, the V40 supports NFC, which is absent in the V30.

Vivo V40 vs. Vivo V30: Final thoughts

The V40 offers minor upgrades compared to its predecessor, the V30. While it offers a brighter display, a larger battery, broader 5G band support, NFC functionality, and better durability, these enhancements may not be significant enough for all users. Both phones share the same processor and similar camera configurations, making the V30 a potentially viable option for those who prioritize a lighter design and are content with its existing features.

YouTube is Testing Community Notes Feature to Add Context to Videos

To combat misinformation and provide additional context for viewers, YouTube is testing out a new feature called Community Notes. Inspired by a similar feature on X, Community Notes allows viewers to contribute short blurbs that offer clarification or background information on specific videos.

The feature appears to be very similar to Twitter’s Community Notes Feature

The pilot program is currently limited to a select group of users in the United States who will be invited via email or through YouTube Creator Studio. To participate, users must have an active YouTube account in good standing. During this initial phase, YouTube will rely on “third-party evaluators” to assess the helpfulness of submitted notes. This feedback will be used to train the system and ensure that only the most valuable contributions are displayed publicly.

Once the pilot expands beyond the initial group, viewers will be able to rate the helpfulness of Community Notes using a three-tier system: “helpful,” “somewhat helpful,” or “unhelpful.” They can also provide specific reasons for their ratings, such as whether the note cites credible sources or is written in a clear and concise manner.

A unique “bridging-based algorithm” will determine which notes appear under videos. This algorithm prioritizes notes that receive positive ratings from a diverse range of viewers, even those with differing viewpoints. While there’s always a risk of misuse, YouTube hopes this approach will minimize the spread of misinformation.

The core concept behind Community Notes is similar to a feature introduced by Twitter during the Jack Dorsey era and later expanded globally under Elon Musk‘s ownership. While Twitter’s notes haven’t necessarily solved all accuracy issues, YouTube appears to believe the crowd-sourced approach holds value. The pilot program will begin on mobile devices for users in the United States. YouTube acknowledges there may be bumps along the road as they refine the system, and a wider rollout in the US is expected in the coming weeks and months.

Samsung may discontinue its partnership with AMD in the near future and develop its own GPU

Samsung has been using Xclips GPUs (built in collaboration with AMD) in its flagship Exynos chips. The GPUs equip AMD RDNA graphics IP and were projected to offer reasonably better ray tracing performance.

However, earlier last month tipster @rquandt hinted that Samsung may discontinue the partnership with AMD after 2025. “In 2026, Samsung seems to aim for the release of a next-gen flagship SoC feat its own GPU,” he noted.

In the latest news, the Korean platform Naver hints at the same. Reporter Jinsol Lee talks about Samsung considering investing in GPU at a board meeting. According to the report, a company executive at the management committee within the board of directors has decided to invest in GPUs. At the management level, the investment is expected to strengthen the company’s “GPU-related business competitiveness or to expand its internal information technology (IT) infrastructure.”

This is a bit unusual because the investment agenda has so far focused on the memory chips and the foundry. This is the first time that Samsung Electronics has decided to invest in GPUs at the management committee since 2012 when the agenda was made public.

In the Management Committee meeting, memory semiconductor and foundry factory construction and facility investment were reviewed. The company is also investing in AI chips and advanced packaging methods.

Given Samsung’s self-developed GPU manages to compete with the Adreno or Mali GPUs, it will offer the company more control over its products and will also likely save some costs.

That being said, the Exynos 2500 will still feature an RDNA GPU – the Xclips 950. However, a recent rumor also says that Samsung may not even use the chipset in the Galaxy S25 series at all. Nonetheless, we are still quite a few months away from the launch and more information should surface going forward.

Samsung Galaxy S25 series could get Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chips in all regions: Kuo

With the launch of the Galaxy S24 series behind them, Samsung is currently focusing on introducing its upcoming foldables. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 are both expected to be unveiled at the July 10 launch event in Paris. That said, Samsung has already started working on the Galaxy S25 series smartphones as well.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Phones

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shared some news, that puts the brand in an unfavorable situation, however, brings joy to users in many regions. As per Kuo, the Samsung Galaxy S25 series will be exclusively powered by Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor. For many years, Samsung has shipped its flagship Galaxy S series smartphones with its in-house Exynos processors in many regions across the globe. Around 60% of this year’s Galaxy S24 series devices were powered by the Exynos 2400 processor.

However, it looks like the Exynos 2500 chip may not ship due to Samsung’s lower-than-expected 3nm yield. Kuo also points out that since Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will see a price increase of 25-30%, the company is expected to significantly benefit from this increase in orders from Samsung.

Reports indicate that Samsung’s second-generation 3nm chips are experiencing low yield rates, as low as 20%. This poses a challenge to Samsung’s plan to increase the use of its in-house Exynos chips, replacing those manufactured by TSMC, particularly in light of rising costs for TSMC’s advanced nodes. Given these production issues, it remains unclear how Samsung will manage to control costs for the upcoming Galaxy S25 series.

According to Caviar, the Space Tornado collection is a “manifesto of boldness, a symbol of striving for the stars, and an invitation to possess a piece of infinity.” The tourbillon mechanisms in the watches are designed to resemble whirlwinds, and the collection’s name is a reference to the giant vortices that occur on stars.

Twin Spin, the most affordable model in the collection, features two tourbillons and is priced at $6200. The SkyWard model features a skeletonized chronograph that allows wearers to view the intricate watch mechanism. The SkyWard model is priced at $6910.

The Stargazer X-Edition is limited to only three pieces, while the other watches are limited to 99 pieces each. Recently, they unveiled the limited-edition “Criss-Cross” iPad Pro 2024, inspired by Deadpool, starting at $12,200.
