Alipay, the Chinese payment app and digital wallet, has unveiled a groundbreaking solution in the field of healthcare – the “AI Medical Assistant.” This innovative tool, uses AI large models and digital human technology like virtual avatars, to change the way you meet your doctor and visit hospitals.

While the AI assistant might be introduced through the Alipay app, it’s uncertain if it’s integrated within the app or offered as a standalone service. The assistant will help throughout the entire healthcare journey, from pre-treatment to post-treatment phases.

Pre-Appointment Assistance: Patients can describe their symptoms online and the AI assistant will match them with the appropriate department, eliminating the hassle of navigating through various channels or worse ending up in the wrong department.

In-Hospital Guidance: When patients arrive at the hospital, they’ll meet special “Assistants” customized for their city and hospital. These digital helpers will guide them through treatment plans, check reports, and even help with insurance payments.

Post-Consultation Support: After the doctor’s visit, patients can see their medical records, and prescriptions, and ask about reports. The health assistant also sets up a health file for long-term care through Internet Hospital features.

For the pilot project, Alipay has partnered with the Zhejiang Provincial Health Commission and launched their first digital health assistant, “Anclin.” Currently operational in 92 hospitals across the province, users in Zhejiang can easily access this new healthcare experience. Commenting on the launch, Alipay said that the AI assistant has the potential to revolutionize patient care and bridge existing gaps in healthcare delivery.

In addition to its entry into the healthcare sector, Alipay is a leader in digital payment solutions, offering users a variety of services beyond financial transactions. As part of the Alibaba group, Alipay’s expansive ecosystem includes services ranging from taxi-hailing to insurance purchases, catering to a diverse consumer base.

Alipay’s AI Medical Assistant represents a new era of patient-centric healthcare. With its user-friendly interface and comprehensive functions this Digital assistant has the power to transform the healthcare landscape in China, one patient at a time.

Today, the company has launched a new variant of the same, dubbed Nokia 225 4G Payment Edition.

As the phone’s name clearly indicates, the focus of the company is on facilitating payments using the device. The phone enables users to access Alipay Wallet with a one-key action. It comes in three colors — Black, Blue, and Sand Gold.

Coming to the pricing, this new Nokia 225 4G Payment Edition is priced at 349 yuan (~$55) in China, which is the same as the pricing of the standard model launched last year. However, for a limited time, it will be available at a promotional price of 309 yuan, which roughly converts to $48.

As noted above, the major difference between the standard version and this new model is the support for mobile payments function. With a one-key action, the function can be opened or navigate to the payment option in the menu and then click on the “Payment Code” to proceed further. The user also gets an option to set a daily consumption limit.

The phone comes with a 2.4-inch screen and under the hood, the device is powered by a UNISOC processor. It has memory card support that can help users expand the phone’s storage capacity up to 32GB.

There’s also a 3-megapixel camera sensor placed on the phone’s back panel. Additionally, the phone also comes with a flashlight. It supports features like quick dialing, voice recorder, external radio, etc.

The highlight of the phone is that it comes with support for 4G connectivity. The 4G support isn’t limited to a single SIM but the phone can be connected to a 4G network on both the SIM cards simultaneously.

Interestingly, the order is set to take effect in 45 days, after Donald Trump leaves office. The applications banned with this executive order includes apps from some of the biggest companies like Ant Group and Tencent.

In an attempt to justify the ban, Trump said that the applications can access private information from users and could be used by the Chinese government to “track locations of Federal employees and contractors, and build dossiers of personal information.”

Several US-based companies, including Apple, Ford Motor, Walmart, and Walt Disney previously objected to an executive order by Donal Trump that banned Tencent’s WeChat as well as ByteDance’s TikTok. A federal court has issued a preliminary injunction blocking the ban on WeChat.

EDITOR’S PICK: Honor seems to be finally cooperating with Qualcomm for chipset supply for its upcoming smartphones

As noted above, the executive order bans Alipay, a payments application from Ant Group with more than a billion users. It also bans three applications from Tencent, which includes WeChat Pay, QQWallet, and Tencent QQ. Other apps in the list include CamScanner, SHAREit, Vmate, and WPS Office.

The move seems to be furthering the US-China trade war which started when Donald Trump issued an executive order banning China-based Huawei Technologies, the world’s largest telecom equipment manufacturer.

The popularity of mobile payments in China was driven by the use of QR codes, making the process super easy as the user just need to scan the code to make payments.

But now, since the QR codes are gaining more popularity outside China, the tech giants in the Chinese market are moving towards a newer system for mobile payments — facial recognition. Companies like Ant Financials, an arm of Alibaba and WeChat backed by Tencent, have already started using facial recognition.

Alibaba’s Facial Recognition System for Payments

The facial recognition-based payments system provides more ease and security as well as portability compared to the QR codes method. Also, the use of this new method could further boost the usage of mobile payments as it has the potential to bring a new wave of less tech-savvy users, such as the elderly.

Alipay first rolled out its Dragonfly facial recognition system, which is an upgrade of its Smile-to-Pay system, in December last year. Since then, the company has expanded it to over 300 cities in China.

Following its footsteps, rival WeChat Pay also started offering its device to merchants around three months later. The device is capable of scanning both a customer’s face as well as QR codes for payment. However, the company has not shared statistics.

Editor’s Pick: China’s Smart Assistant market to see a rapid spurt in growth in the coming years

The adaptation of this new system of facial recognition has made the shopping experience a breeze. During checkout, all the user needs to do is choose facial recognition to pay and look at the tablet’s camera. Once authorized, the amount will be deducted from the user’s account. Now, the user doesn’t need to take out the phone and scan the QR code and then proceed with the steps to make payment.

This is also leading to less reliance on cashiers. For instance, Alipay is now offering solutions such as vending machines and self-checkout machines that both use face-scans to process payments.

The battle for the mobile payments market share in China is majorly between two giants — WeChat Pay and Alipay. As per the reports, both the companies jointly accounted for over 90 percent of China’s mobile payments last year. Both are almost equal when it comes to ticket size, with WeChat Pay accounting for 45 percent of total transaction amounts and Alipay for 46 percent, reveals market research firm Ipsos.

There are currently about 583 million users who are using mobile payments technology. With over 562 million Chinese still remain to get connected to the internet, the market has a lot of room to grow.

Fingerprint security may not be the safest form of security available but its adoption on smartphones are getting wider usage. Apart from locking the smartphone in order to avoid unwarranted access to owner’s privacy, fingerprint technology is now being deployed in online payment and other aspects. Even though phone manufacturers are quick to always warn that it is not very safe, it is not surprising to find that some phone users still make use of it. However, a shocking discovery has emerged that a broken fingerprint sensor can be unlocked by just anybody’s fingers apart from the stored fingerprint.

A video uploaded on China’s video sharing and live streaming platform Miaopai seems to chronicle the demonstration of the effect a crack on the fingerprint has on the integrity of the smartphone’s fingerprint technology. The video was created by a dude named Xiao Xu and even though he spoke in Chinese we have been able to transcribe what he said and you can watch the video from below. He claimed his mobile phone accidentally fell down and the screen got cracked around the front-facing fingerprint sensor area. Thereafter, he tried using the fingerprint unlock feature and found out it still worked fine and even could make fingerprint payment on AliPay using the sensor. Another day, a classmate wanted to check out his phone which he left idle and surprisingly, the friend’s fingerprint unlocked the phone. Further probing revealed that everyone else could unlock the smartphone with their fingerprint and not only that, fingerprint payment was possible.

This is coming on the heels of a recent unconfirmed assertion that an orange peel can be used to override the fingerprint sensor and unlock a smartphone. The orange peel, it is claimed, can be used to effect fingerprint payment on the smartphone. We don’t know how true these claims are but in an era where fingerprint technology is almost finding a place on all classes of smartphones, these are grave causes for concern. For now, no official confirmation has been issued by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information (TENAA) which is responsible for certification and quality assurance of smartphones manufactured in China.

Read More: JDI Develops Transparent Glass-Based Fingerprint Sensor, Ships This Year

Perhaps, your smartphone has got a cracked sensor? Then you can try this out to see if an unauthorized fingerprint can unlock your mobile. If not, we’ll have to wait for a response from the relevant authorities and hope that comes out quickly, considering the potential security risk this could pose to millions of smartphone users around the world who already use fingerprint payment with their mobile. It’s crazy to even imagine that a thief can steal someone’s phone and simply crack the screen then get access to the victim’s funds and other sensitive details. Just crazy! These are even several other reports of hacked fingerprint sensors using various methods. With these negative reports, do you think fingerprint technology could last the next 10 years on smartphones? Let us know your thought in the comment section.

From buying groceries to hailing taxies to hiring a bike — there’s a QR code for everything. Even beggars have reportedly started accepting payments via QR codes, shedding light on its popularity in the country. In fact, around one-third of the mobile payments in China are via QR codes and this figure is expected to rise in the coming future. With millions of people living in China relying on QR codes for making payments on a day to day basis, it has become necessary for China’s financial institutions to start to regulate this modern mode of payment. In this regard, Chia’s central bank has announced plans to start regulating payments made by QR codes, barcodes, and other modes of payment via scanning, by keeping an initial payment limit of 500 Yuan ($76.5) per person, per day. Additional daily limits of 1000 Yuan ($153) and 5000 Yuan ($765) apply to payers who haven’t completed certain authentication procedures.

The need for regulations in this sector is important to ensure a solid check on fraudulent transactions. Things like money laundering or making payments in exchange for cash are different tactics used by sellers using QR codes and the Chinese government wants to stop such kind of activity by introducing proper regulations. Another reason is to foster fair competition between the two mobile payment giants in China, Alibaba’s Alipay and Tencent’s WeChat. QR code payments are very common among their services, so it becomes necessary to ensure there are enough regulations to keep things in check.

Apart from payment caps, the central bank wants better policies with regards to QR code payments, like expiration dates, encryption, regular updates etc to ensure that QR codes are not being used by sellers for fraudulent transactions. The payment limits are set to come into effect from April 1, 2018.

After its launch two days ago, there have been tens of articles on its design, features and camera capabilities. This article adds to the list but will definitely not be the last.

Early reviews of the Mi 6 shows that MIUI now allows fingerprints for payments in the WeChat app. This makes the Xiaomi Mi 6 the first phone to do so. Now users can authorize payments with only their fingerprints on Mi Pay, AliPay, and WeChat.

During the launch, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun talked about the new features of their new flagship such as the new NFC technology that speeds up communication between channels by up to 50% coupled with the advanced NXP PN80T chip that allows for more secure payments.

The feature is still exclusive to the Xiaomi Mi 6 for now and there is no mention yet of it rolling out to older devices but we hope it does if not now but probably with MIUI 9.

Apparently in a strategic move aimed at leveraging on its large follower-ship in order to boost its withering financial status, Xiaomi has announced the setting up of a bank in the Sichuan province of China. The smartphone giant’s subsidiary Sichuan Yinmi Technology Co., Ltd entered a partnership with some other enterprises based in the province to float a bank back in June and indeed got approval from the China Banking Regulatory Commission.

The Xiaomi Sichuan private bank will focus on serving individual consumers, small and medium-sized companies, as well as those engaged in the agricultural sector. One of the major investors is New Hope Group, China’s largest animal-feed producer and it holds a 30 percent stake in the company while Xiaomi controls a 29.5% stake via its subsidiary.

The business strategy seems to be tied around relying on New Hope’s sprawling agricultural presence and Xiaomi’s roughly 200 million users, which would enable the Xiaomi Sichuan private bank offer better financial services.

According to a recent Weibo post by Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun, the joint venture bank will also offer internet banking services. This could give Xiaomi an edge over its rival in the ever increasing race to offer online financial payment services by China’s mobile phone companies. Xiaomi recently launched the Xiaomi Wallet, an internet money-market fund service and is working on its Mi Pay, a payment platform with a wide range of services. The six-year old innovative start up is also said to be building an ecosystem where internet financial services will play a key role in connecting partners and sustaining users. Internet heavyweight – Alibaba also has its own payment platform – AliPay as well as Tencent with its own TenPay.

Already the bank has got its key officials in place and a board has been put in place with them having their inaugural meeting. This no doubt marks the beginning of a new direction of internet banking. Lei Jun also hints that the bank will be opening its doors to customers soon.

Huami says the 280mAh battery will last for 11.6 days if you use it just as a plain watch but normal usage (30 minutes run + 200 push messages) will get you 5 days of life. However turning GPS and heart rate monitoring on will get you 35 hours of battery life.

This is the same company that manufacturers Xiaomi’s Mi Band.

Xiaomi Mi Band

The idea here is simple, the smart band has to be connected to the smartphone. Now, when the user goes near any of Alipay’s clients, the payment will be enabled, without having to enter any password. This Xiaomi smartband will truly change the way users make payments at retail outlets, further increasing the speed at which they pay up for goods and services.

As mentioned above, a connection to the smartphone is required for enabling payments. So, this Xiaomi smartband will act as the channel through which the client confirms the identity of the user. The band will be connected to the phone via Bluetooth and will communicate with it to verify his / her identity. Only then will it be able authorize payments made via the Alipay client.

These companies further add that the new Xiaomi band will use industry standard encryption methods to secure the payment. Each user will be given a unique identifer which will identify the status of the user who has to make payments.

This is not the first time we are hearing about such a one touch mobile payment solution system. However, most of such products available in the market are not widely used mainly because its not very cheap. But Xiaomi band’s entry into the market with such a payment solution can truly change the way users make payments, at least in China.

Xiaomi products are trusted and used by millions of customers, so naturally, an effective one touch payment enabled Xiaomi smartband will be well received by fans in the country. Of course, we still can’t comment on the effectiveness or security of the device, as for that we will have to try it out ourselves.

But what do you think about this smart band one touch payment solution? Will you trust Xiaomi or any other company with your financial details?
