As promised a few months ago by the MIUI team, a stable Android 7.1.1 update is now rolling out to the Mi 5C.

The update which comes via a MIUI 8.5.3.0 update is over 1GB in size. You can decide to wait for the OTA or grab the file via the link provided below.

The beta version was already available for over three months already but is only now rolling out as a stable version.

Apart from the bump in version number, the update brings a number of new features and optimizations. For example, the number of system apps that autostart has been reduced by 41. A bug that affects the brightness when you switch from auto to manual has been fixed. There are also updates to the calculator and clock app.

The exciting part of the announcement is the promise to upgrade the Mi 5C to Android O. While the update might not come in time, it is still good news to know it will get it.

The Xiaomi Mi 5C was released in February 2017 and is the first smartphone to be powered by Xiaomi’s own Surge S1 processor. It has a 5.15-inch display, 3GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and a 2860mAh battery.

The Snapdragon 835 is the flagship chip for the year no doubt, but for mid-range phones, the Snapdragon 660 is the chip to look forward to. The Qualcomm chip built on Samsung’s 14nm LPP node is expected to power phones like the Nokia 7 and Nokia 8.  Adding to that list is the OPPO R6051, a new device which has showed up on GFXBench.

The OPPO R6051 is a 5.5-inch phone with a 1920 × 1080 resolution. There is a Qualcomm octa-core CPU said to be the SD660 clocked at 2.2GHz and an Adreno 510 GPU under the hood. We were initially shocked to see that the Snapdragon 660 uses the Adreno 510 GPU and not the Adreno 512 as previously reported. But after comparing the results to that of the OPPO R9s Plus which is also powered by the same GPU, the difference is as clear as night and day.

The R6051 gets 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and surprisingly runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat. OPPO fans should be excited at that last bit seeing as the recently announced OPPO F3 Plus runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow and the OPPO R9, R9 Plus and F1 are also just getting updated to Android 6.0!!!

As is typical of OPPO, the cameras usually get all the attention. There is a 16MP sensor on the rear that sadly doesn’t shoot in 4K and a 20MP camera up front that also records only in 1080p. We can’t tell if any of these are dual cameras since benchmark sites don’t indicate that.

Barely two months after OnePlus pushed Android 7.0 Nougat update to users of its Oxygen OS, the company has announced updates that would usher in Android 7.1 .1 for OnePlus 3/3T owners running the OxygenOS. Already, OnePlus 3/3T running the HydrogenOS had gotten updated to Android 7.1 Nougat a few days back.

The updates will bring Android 7.1.1 upgrade and also there is a new Shot on OnePlus wallpaper option. There are also improvements in the gallery such as a new photo editor with watermark and photo straightening has been added as an option. Also, newly added media will now be highlighted in the photos section and image location will be displayed on grid view. There is now the option of grouping media by month and year added and users can now hide folders and individual media.

The upgrade also brings some general bug fixes and some known issues like Android Pay not working on London TFL and Tube has now gotten a solution. Compatibility issues with certain third party apps have also been taken care of. This is a Beta update so, OnePlus has stated that they would disable the download link once they get enough feedback. About four months ago, we saw a device known as the Xiaomi Meri surface on Geekbench. Back then it ran Android 6.0 Marshmallow. A report later surfaced saying that ‘Meri’ is the codename for the Xiaomi Mi 5C. Today the device has again surfaced on Geekbench but with a couple of changes.

The new Geekbench listing shows the Xiaomi Meri runs Android 7.1.1 but still keeps the 1.4GHz processor which we have come to know as the Pinecone V670. The RAM is also the same at 3GB but the benchmark scores have increased slightly.

The device scores 762 in the single-core test and 3399 in the multi-core test, up from 758 and 3105 when it ran Android 6.0.

Xiaomi had earlier today announced that it will be launching its new Pinecone processor on the 28th of February. There is no mention of the Xiaomi Mi 5C being launched on that day. However, the chances of that happening are slim. While this device might be running Android Nougat, it doesn’t seem MIUI 9 is ready. It will be unusual to launch the Mi 5C with MIUI 8 based on Android Nougat. On the other hand, if it launches with Android Marshmallow, we can be sure of it getting updated to Nougat.

Xiaomi MIUI 9 is still in development but it is believed the next-gen operating system would be based on Android 7.0 Nougat. A GFXBench result had appeared showing the Redmi Note 3 running Android 7.1.1, an indication that the latest Google OS would soon hit Xiaomi smartphones.

But before that would officially happen, an unofficial version of Android 7.1.1 for Xiaomi Mi Note, Mi 4 and Mi Note Pro has appeared. A screenshot of the Mi Note, Mi 4 and Mi Note Pro running Android 7.1 was shared recently on Weibo showing the security patch as having been updated on December 5, 2016.
