Global smartphone shipments are off to a slower start in 2026. According to IDC’s latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, shipments fell 4.1% year over year in the first quarter to 289.7 million units.

The drop effectively ends a ten-quarter streak of growth that began around mid-2023. And we are all probably aware of the reasons. Supply constraints tied to storage components and rising costs. Both of these are expected to continue putting pressure on the market.

The top two companies still posted growth. Samsung and Apple were the only vendors among the global top five to record year-over-year gains.

The market outlook in Q1, 2026

Samsung returned to the number one spot for the quarter, thanks in part to the demand for the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. Even with a later-than-usual launch, shipments still rose 3.6% compared to last year. 

The company also filled the gap with earlier releases in its midrange A series, which helped stabilize volumes.

Apple followed in second place, with the iPhone 17 series seeing particularly strong demand in China. The company recorded more than 30% growth in the mainland, contributing to a 3.3% increase globally. That said, IDC notes that supply disruptions and weaker channel support in some regions kept that growth in check.

For the rest of the top five, things were a bit more muted. Xiaomi held onto third place despite posting the largest decline among the group. 

Oppo came in fourth, with stronger performance in China offsetting weaker international results. Notably, Oppo’s data now also includes Realme. Vivo rounds out the top five, contributing 7.3% of global smartphone shipments. 

Outside the top tier, there were a few bright spots. Honor, along with Lenovo (through Motorola) and Huawei, all managed to grow. Honor stood out with a 24% year-over-year increase, which IDC says is due to its overseas expansion. 

In China, total shipments reached about 69 million units, down 3.3% from a year ago. Even there, growth from Huawei and Apple wasn’t enough to offset the broader slowdown.

TSMC would hit another major milestone this year as its advanced nodes would allow smartphone chipsets to reach clock speeds up to 5GHz. Companies like Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple have already been greatly benefiting from TSMC’s cutting-edge technologies, and later this year, we’ll witness new chips reaching up to 5GHz of peak clock speeds for the first time in history, and that only makes it worse for Huawei to compete with.

Over the years, Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple have grown strongly to offer powerful chips with excellent performance and efficiency, and TSMC has been at the center of it. The chart below (shared by Kurnal) shows how these companies have gradually increased peak clock speeds, now pushing toward the 5.0GHz mark.

The latest flagship from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, can already reach a peak speed of 4.61GHz, and the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro is said to reach 5.0GHz. MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 Pro will reportedly achieve a similar feat, following the Dimensity 9500’s 4.21GHz peak clock speed. This increase enables SoCs to offer major improvements in both single-threaded and multi-threaded workloads.

Huawei’s Kirin chipsets, on the other hand, are nowhere near the performance and efficiency offered by Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple. Its downtrend on the above graph is due to U.S. trade sanctions that banned the company from doing business with TSMC. Huawei had no other option but to use China’s SMIC facility, which is still generations behind TSMC. Even today, SMIC is limited to the 5nm process because it’s restricted from using the most advanced EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography machines.

Huawei’s latest chip, Kirin 9030 Pro, hasn’t crossed the 3.0GHz mark. As things stand today, Huawei is still a long way behind Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple to even compete with them, and the difference is a foundry partner.

What’s even more interesting is that some Android manufacturers have reportedly already started experimenting with similar tones. Copycat cycle, meet déjà vu.

What can you expect from the iPhone 18 Pro?

The iPhone 18 Pro is also rumored to feature a higher screen-to-body ratio. Leaks claim Apple is working to shrink the front cutout area, reducing its width from 20.76mm to 13.49mm. That’s roughly a 35 percent drop. 

The result should be a slightly more immersive display, though it’s the kind of change you’ll likely notice more on a spec sheet than in day-to-day use.

On the performance side, the iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to debut Apple’s A20 Pro chip. It will be among the first set of smartphone processors to be built on TSMC’s 2nm process. 

This year, Apple is also expected to launch iPhone Ultra, Apple’s first foldable, alongside the iPhone 18 series. 

However, there’s still some time before Apple officially announces the upcoming phones, but more details are likely to surface through unofficial channels as we get closer to launch.

Apple seems to have closed out 2025 on a strong note, at least going by the latest data from Counterpoint Research. In the fourth quarter, iPhones accounted for five of the top ten best-selling smartphones globally, which is a fairly solid presence considering how competitive the market has been.

At the top of the list is the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which reportedly held about 5% of total smartphone sales on its own. The regular iPhone 17 comes in second, followed by the iPhone 17 Pro in third. That kind of lineup dominance isn’t entirely surprising for Apple, though, especially in markets like the US and parts of Europe, where the ecosystem tends to play a big role.

Apple also has a couple of older models still holding on. The iPhone 16 sits in fourth place, while the iPhone 16e shows up further down in eighth. Interestingly, the iPhone Air doesn’t appear in the rankings.

Samsung takes four spots overall, mostly through its mid-range lineup. The Galaxy A56, A36, and A07 are placed fifth, sixth, and seventh, while the Galaxy S25 just makes it into tenth. Xiaomi appears once with the REDMI A5 in ninth, which is pretty much in line with what we have seen in recent years.

Taken together, these top ten models account for around 23% of global smartphone sales in the quarter, which gives some idea of how concentrated the market is at the top.

If you zoom out a bit, Apple’s position wasn’t just limited to this quarter. Its devices showed up consistently throughout 2025, with the iPhone 16 being the only one to stay in the top ten across all four quarters. Samsung and Xiaomi, meanwhile, moved around a bit more.

As for what’s driving this, it’s probably a mix of things. The iPhone 17 series had a strong start, and the base model in particular seems to have helped, thanks to upgrades like a higher refresh rate and more RAM.

Overall, Apple still seems to be holding its ground at the higher end of the market. Android brands are pushing hard in the mid-range and budget space, but when it comes to the top spots, iPhones are still showing up more often than not.

The mention of a “wide foldable” is also interesting. It lines up with earlier reports about Huawei working on a new model, possibly called the Pura X2. According to tipster Digital Chat Station, Apple is currently evaluating a 200-megapixel camera sensor for a future iPhone. The sensor in question is said to be a large 1/1.12-inch unit, notably the same type reportedly used in the upcoming Oppo Find X9 Ultra.

In the comments, the tipster also clarifies that the 200MP sensor is only being tested for the main camera, not across multiple lenses. Keep in mind, though, internal testing doesn’t always translate into a shipping feature.

On top of that, it has a 200MP periscope camera with 3x optical zoom, another periscope lens offering 10x optical zoom, and a 50MP ultra-wide camera. The device is also said to support 20x “optical quality” zoom, and up to 120x digital zoom.

Companies like Oppo are experimenting with hardware-heavy camera systems, while Apple has generally leaned on computational photography to deliver results without dramatically increasing sensor resolution.

There’s also timing to consider. The supply chain rumor points to commercial availability sometime next year, suggesting that even if Apple adopts a 200MP sensor, it likely won’t appear in the immediate next iPhone release.

It’s still a test rather than a confirmed feature. But it does indicate Apple is at least exploring the same high-megapixel territory that Android manufacturers have been pushing into for the past few years. Whether that leads to a real product is still an open question.

Apple has officially confirmed the dates for its next Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC 2026, and it’s shaping up to be a packed week for software announcements. The company shared the details on March 23, setting expectations for updates across its entire ecosystem, with a strong focus on AI this time.

WWDC 2026 will run from Monday, June 8 to Friday, June 12. Like recent years, it will follow a hybrid format. Most of the event will be free to stream online, so developers anywhere can tune in without paying. Apple will also host a smaller in-person experience at Apple Park in Cupertino for selected developers and Swift Student Challenge winners.

The keynote, where all the big announcements happen, is scheduled for June 8 at 10:00 am PT, which is 10:30 pm IST. It will be streamed across Apple’s website, YouTube, and the Apple Developer app.

As expected, the spotlight is on software. Apple is preparing to unveil iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27. Alongside these, the company will host more than 100 sessions, labs, and developer-focused events throughout the week.

One of the biggest talking points is Apple Intelligence. Apple is expected to push deeper into on-device AI, with improvements to Siri being a key highlight. The assistant is rumored to become more context-aware and better integrated across apps. There are also reports suggesting Apple may lean on Google’s Gemini models to power some of these upgrades.

iOS 27 might not be about flashy changes. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is taking a more stability-focused approach this year. That likely means fewer visual changes and more effort on bug fixes and overall reliability.

Apple’s latest hardware is doing something pretty unexpected on the AI side, though it comes with a clear catch. The iPhone 17 Pro has been shown running a 400-billion parameter language model locally, which sounds almost unreal for a phone.

The demo comes from an open-source project called Flash-MoE, shared by developer @anemll. Models of this size usually need well over 200GB of memory to even load, so getting one to run on a device with 12GB of RAM shouldn’t really be possible in the usual sense.

What’s happening here is a bit different. Instead of loading the whole model into memory, the system pulls in pieces from storage as needed. It also relies on a Mixture of Experts setup, where only a small portion of the model is active at any given moment. That combination is what makes it run at all.

The problem is speed. Or rather, the lack of it. The model generates at about 0.6 tokens per second, which means you’re waiting a couple of seconds for a single word. It’s slow enough that even simple prompts start to feel like a test of patience. Battery drain is another likely issue here, though that’s expected with this kind of workload.

Still, it’s interesting to see. Not because it’s usable right now, but because it shows where things might be heading. Running something this large entirely on-device, without relying on the cloud, wasn’t even part of the conversation not too long ago.

For now, though, there’s a clear gap between what’s possible and what actually makes sense to use. Smaller models are still the practical choice. But experiments like this do give a glimpse of what future phones might eventually handle more comfortably.

Oppo recently debuted the Oppo Find N6 foldable with a crease that is almost negligible in daily use. It’s not completely invisible, but it’s subtle enough that many users barely notice it while scrolling or watching videos. Even Apple is rumored to use a similar display technology in its first foldable, which could launch this September.

However, the Cupertino giant appears to be even more serious about making this display the best it can be. 

Apple iPhone Fold will use multiple layers of protective layers between the display

According to supply chain reports shared by tipster Digital Chat Station, Apple’s foldable display could use a dual-layer glass structure built from UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) and UFG materials.

In simple terms, this means the screen may consist of multiple glass layers rather than a single thin sheet. The display panel itself would sit between these layers instead of being placed directly against the hinge mechanism.

This design could help solve one of the biggest problems with foldables: durability. When a foldable phone bends thousands of times during its lifetime, the pressure around the hinge can gradually create a visible crease in the middle of the screen. By separating the display layer from the hinge area and using multiple glass layers, Apple may be trying to reduce stress on the panel.

The rumored display may also include a form of self-healing glass. The idea is that the display could gradually smooth itself over time, helping it maintain a cleaner look after repeated folding.

Oppo did something similar with the Find N6, which it says uses Auto-Smoothing Flex Glass, where the crease slowly smooths itself out over time.

None of this is confirmed yet, and Apple rarely comments on products before they launch. But we know for certain that a foldable iPhone is coming.

Apple has followed a similar approach in the past. Devices such as the iPhone X and iPhone XR were introduced during the standard launch event but became available weeks later. This suggests that a delayed release for a new form factor like a foldable device would not be unusual.

The delay could be linked to production complexity or supply chain considerations. Reports indicate that the foldable iPhone has reached an advanced stage of development, with its design nearing completion, which supports the possibility of a release within the year.

Both headphones include Adaptive EQ, personalized spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, and Apple-designed dynamic drivers. However, the newer model introduces enhanced active noise cancellation that Apple claims can deliver up to 1.5 times stronger noise reduction compared to the original version.

The AirPods Max 2 also supports Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness, features designed to intelligently balance noise cancellation and ambient sound depending on the listening environment.

Noise control and microphones

Each version includes nine microphones in total, with eight dedicated to active noise cancellation and three microphones used for voice pickup. Transparency mode is available on both models, allowing external sound to pass through when needed.

However, the AirPods Max 2 expands on the listening experience by combining Adaptive Audio with Transparency mode, creating a more dynamic noise control system. Apple’s more affordable “e” series iPhones have always played it a bit safe with features, especially when it comes to displays. While many Android phones in the same price range already offer 120Hz panels, Apple has stuck with 60Hz so far. That might finally change.

A new report from ZDNet Korea suggests that Apple is planning to bring a high refresh rate display to the lineup with the iPhone 19e, expected around spring 2028. If that timeline holds, it means at least a couple more generations of the “e” series will continue without the upgrade.

The current iPhone 17e, which recently launched as a more accessible option in Apple’s lineup, still uses a 60Hz OLED panel. It also sticks to a single rear camera and a relatively modest battery, making it feel a bit behind compared to similarly priced Android devices. It gets the basics right, but it’s not exactly pushing hardware boundaries.

The reported upgrade for the iPhone 19e is more significant. Apple is said to be planning a 120Hz LTPO OLED display, which would allow the refresh rate to dynamically adjust between 1Hz and 120Hz depending on what’s on screen. That’s the same general idea behind ProMotion on higher-end iPhones, and it could make scrolling, animations, and overall responsiveness feel noticeably smoother.

As usual, Apple is expected to reuse parts from earlier flagship models to keep costs down. In this case, the panel could be borrowed from the iPhone 17 series: a 6.3-inch display with a resolution of 2,622 × 1,206, along with high brightness levels for HDR content. The shift from LTPS to LTPO would also help with power efficiency, which should translate to better battery life in everyday use.

Another likely addition is support for an always-on display, something that’s been limited to more expensive iPhones so far. With LTPO, the screen can drop to very low refresh rates, allowing it to show basic information without draining much power.

It’s still early, and plans could change, but the move suggests Apple is gradually bringing more premium features to its lower-cost models.

At first glance, the new model looks quite familiar. Its design remains largely unchanged from the original AirPods Max, but most of its improvements are inside. 

Apple AirPods Max 2 Specifications

It now runs an H2 chip, enabling features like adaptive audio, conversation awareness, and voice highlighting. We have seen these features in newer AirPods, and they are now making their way to the company’s flagship headphones, too.

According to Apple, active noise cancellation on AirPods Max 2 is now 1.5 times more effective than the previous generation. The company says the improvement comes from a combination of the H2 chip and updated computational audio algorithms. 

Transparency mode is also getting an update. Apple says the system uses new digital signal processing tuned for the H2 chip and the headphone’s microphone array, which should make outside sounds feel more natural when users want to stay aware of their surroundings.

AirPods Max 2 also introduces a new high dynamic range amplifier designed to produce clearer audio while maintaining the sound profile the original model is known for. The spatial audio now gives more accurate instrument placement and improved balance across lows, mids, and highs.

A few extras

The headphones support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio when connected with the included USB-C cable. Apple says creators can use the headphones in professional workflows inside apps like Logic Pro, including music production and track mixing with head-tracking spatial audio.

The AirPods Max 2 has a Game Mode that the company claims can deliver a more responsive audio experience while gaming. 

AirPods Max 2 also introduces a few less typical features for headphones. Users can remotely control a camera by pressing the digital crown while the Camera app is open on an iPhone or iPad. Apple is also adding studio-quality audio recording, which the company says could be useful for interviews, podcasts, or vocal recordings.

Other additions include personalized volume that adjusts listening levels over time based on user preferences, as well as a new Siri interaction method that allows users to nod or shake their head to respond to notifications from Siri.

On the environmental side, Apple says the headphones include several recycled materials. Magnets are made with 100 percent recycled rare earth elements, ear pads use fully recycled polyester, and Apple-designed circuit boards include recycled gold plating and solder. Packaging is also entirely fiber-based.

Price and Availability

AirPods Max 2 will be available in Midnight, Starlight, Orange, Purple, and Blue. Preorders begin March 25 at $549. The headphones will ship with the Smart Case included with the previous generation.

A troubling report involving an Apple Watch has surfaced online, raising fresh concerns about the safety of wearable devices. A user claims their smartwatch suddenly overheated while on their wrist, causing a painful burn that later developed into a permanent scar shaped like the back of the watch. The person also alleges that Apple’s support process has dragged on for months without a clear resolution.

According to the user, the episode happened on September 24, 2025, while they were working at their laptop in the afternoon. They suddenly felt what they described as an intense surge of heat exactly where the watch was touching their skin.

The user says they quickly removed the device, but by then the skin had already been burned. Photos shared with the post show a distinct mark matching the shape of the Apple Watch’s rear sensor area, along with blisters and redness. Months later, the mark is reportedly still visible, leaving what the user says is a permanent scar.

The individual contacted Apple support the same day and shared images of both the injury and the device. According to their account, initial responses from support suggested the possibility of a skin reaction rather than a heat-related issue. The user, however, insists the sensation was clearly extreme heat.

Apple support later advised sending the watch to one of the company’s facilities in Ireland for further analysis, possibly to check for a battery-related fault. Apple reportedly agreed to arrange a device pickup, but the user claims that collection never happened. Attempts to escalate the issue also appear to have run into problems, including a scheduled Genius Bar appointment that the local Apple Store allegedly had no record of.

As of now, Apple has not publicly commented on the claim. Incidents of smartwatches causing burns are rare, and in many cases reported skin reactions have been linked to allergies, moisture buildup, or prolonged contact with metal components. Still, the user’s description of sudden heat and blistering has drawn attention online.

Xiaomi has just launched its latest tablet, the Xiaomi Pad 8, in India, and it takes on the popular Apple iPad (11th Gen), which launched last year and remains one of the best tablets on the market.

Both devices offer strong performance and capable displays, but Xiaomi focuses more on value while Apple leans on its refined ecosystem. Here is a quick comparison to help you decide which one suits you better.

Display and Design

The Xiaomi Pad 8 features an 11.2-inch 3.2K LCD screen with a resolution of 3200×x2136 and a 3:2 aspect ratio. It supports a 144Hz adaptive refresh rate, Dolby Vision, and TÜV Rheinland-certified low blue light technology.

The device also comes in a Nano Texture Display version, which reduces reflectivity by 70% with AG nano-texture and AR coating. The tablet has a full-metal unibody design and measures only 5.75mm in thickness, giving it a premium and sleek appearance.

The Apple iPad 11th Gen offers a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2360×1640. The display supports True Tone and reaches 500 nits of brightness, but does not include a high refresh rate.

The iPad measures 7mm in thickness, making it slightly bulkier than the Xiaomi Pad 8. The iPad retains Apple’s signature design with slightly thicker bezels and rounded edges, but Xiaomi’s display and form factor make it more suited for productivity and media use.

Performance

The Xiaomi Pad 8 is powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset, paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5T RAM and UFS 4.1 storage. This combination ensures blazing-fast performance, whether you’re multitasking, gaming, or editing documents.

The tablet also supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, making it future-proof in terms of connectivity.

The iPad 11th Gen runs on the A16 Bionic chip, a 5-core CPU with a 4-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. While the A16’s performance is top-tier and optimized for iPadOS, the lack of higher refresh rates limits its gaming potential compared to Xiaomi’s offering.

For everyday tasks, however, the difference may not be noticeable unless you’re into demanding apps or multiplayer gaming.

Software

The Pad 8 runs on HyperOS 3, based on Android 16. The software includes advanced multitasking features such as a 5:5 vertical split view and a 1:9 horizontal split ratio for window management.

It also includes Workstation Mode, which provides a desktop-like experience with an upgraded dock for quick access to apps. Xiaomi has integrated WPS Office into the OS, making it easy to create and edit documents, slides, and spreadsheets.

The iPad (11th Gen) runs on iPadOS 26. Features such as Stage Manager and a PC-level Safari browser make multitasking smooth and intuitive.

Although HyperOS offers better multitasking options on paper, the overall software experience might feel more polished on iPadOS. Ultimately, it comes down to preference, as some users prefer Android while others prefer the Apple ecosystem.

Productivity Features

Xiaomi offers productivity accessories for the Pad 8, including the Focus Pen Pro, a pressure-sensitive stylus with gesture support, and the Focus Keyboard/Focus Keyboard Pro for a laptop-like typing experience.

The Xiaomi Pad 8 comes with a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera. The rear camera supports 4K video recording, while the front camera is suitable for video calls and selfies.

The tablet includes quad speakers with Dolby Atmos support, which provides an immersive audio experience for content consumption and gaming.

The iPad 11th Gen has a 12MP rear camera and a 12MP front-facing camera with Center Stage. Center Stage keeps users in focus during video calls by tracking their movement.

Pricing and Accessories

The Xiaomi Pad 8 starts at ₹33,999 for the 8GB+128GB model, while the top-end 12GB+256GB Nano Texture Display version is priced at ₹38,999.

The Focus Pen Pro is priced at ₹5,999, and the Focus Keyboard is available for ₹8,999. These prices make Xiaomi’s tablet and accessories more affordable compared to Apple’s offerings.

The iPad 11th Gen starts at ₹34,900 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model. The Magic Keyboard Folio is priced at ₹24,900, and the Apple Pencil costs ₹11,900.

The higher accessory prices make the iPad a more expensive option for users who want to use it as a productivity device.

Which Should You Buy?

If you’re looking for a productivity-focused tablet with cutting-edge display tech, powerful hardware, and affordable accessories, the Xiaomi Pad 8 is the better pick.

After the god-tier M5 Max, the first benchmark results for the Apple MacBook Neo have surfaced online. The numbers suggest that the laptop’s CPU performance is very close to that of the Apple iPhone 16 Pro.

According to Apple’s official specifications, the MacBook Neo runs on the Apple A18 Pro chip, the same six-core processor found inside the iPhone 16 Pro.

However, the laptop version ships with a slightly reduced graphics configuration. While the iPhone 16 Pro has six GPU cores, the MacBook Neo includes five. The CPU cores are 6 on both. 

MacBook Neo Geekbench

With this setup, the MacBook Neo scored 3461 in single-core, 8668 in multi-core, and 31,286 in the Metal graphics test on Geekbench. For comparison, the iPhone 16 Pro posts 3445 single-core, 8624 multi-core, and 32,575 Metal.

These scores make the two devices nearly identical on the CPU side, which isn’t surprising given that they share the same chip architecture. The small gap in the Metal graphics score likely comes from the MacBook Neo’s reduced GPU core count.

The numbers also put the new laptop in an interesting position compared to older and newer Macs. For instance, the Apple MacBook Air (M1) scored 2346 single-core and 8342 multi-core in the same benchmark, meaning the MacBook Neo noticeably improves single-core performance while only slightly surpassing the M1 in multi-core tasks.

Meanwhile, the Apple MacBook Air M4 sits in a very different performance tier with 3696 single-core and 14,730 multi-core, far ahead in workloads that rely on multiple CPU cores.

The MacBook Neo also lands below devices like the Apple iPad Air (M3) in multi-core performance, which scores 11,678 points. However, it still outperforms more entry-level hardware, such as the Apple iPad (11th generation), which achieves 6036 points in multi-core performance.

Apple announced its M5 Max–powered MacBooks a couple of days ago, and its first benchmarks are finally in. A 16-inch MacBook Pro equipped with Apple’s M5 Max has appeared in the Geekbench, offering an early look at the chip’s performance.

Apple M5 Max Geekbench shows incredible multi-core performance

According to MacRumors, the tested configuration features an 18-core CPU, and it did incredibly well in the multi-core test. The chip posted a score of 29,233, which is even higher than Apple’s M3 Ultra’s 27,726 points in a 32-core CPU setup.

This result puts the M5 Max ahead of several other high-end Apple processors. The M3 Ultra in the Mac Studio scores 27,726 in Geekbench’s multi-core test, while the M4 Max inside the Mac Studio reaches 26,166. Another configuration of the M4 Max in a 16-inch MacBook Pro scored 25,702 points.

In other words, the new M5 Max delivers roughly a 5% improvement over the M3 Ultra and around 14 to 15% over the M4 Max in multi-core performance.

Single-core performance looks strong as well. The M5 Max scored 4,268 in Geekbench’s single-core test, putting it roughly in line with the standard M5 chip used in the 14-inch MacBook Pro. The result also exceeds the score of AMD’s high-end desktop processor, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, which sits at around 3,395 in the same benchmark.

The tested M5 Max configuration includes a 40-core GPU. In Geekbench’s Metal graphics benchmark, the chip scored between 218,772 and 232,718 points. That’s roughly 20 percent higher than the M4 Max, but about 5 to 10 percent lower than the M3 Ultra.

That gap isn’t entirely surprising. The M3 Ultra is effectively two Max-class chips fused together, giving it significantly more GPU resources overall.

All told, the early benchmark results suggest the M5 Max offers around a 15 percent CPU improvement and roughly a 20 percent GPU uplift compared with the M4 Max.

Compact flagship phones have become a small but steady category in the smartphone market. Not everyone wants a 6.7-inch screen and a device that stretches pockets. That’s why we have phones like the Vivo X300 FE and the Apple iPhone 17 that offer high-end hardware while keeping the overall footprint relatively manageable.

On paper, both devices sit in a similar size class, both use 3nm chipsets, and both bring 120Hz OLED displays. And they are even priced similarly, just below $800. But if you look closely, they take noticeably different approaches to things like cameras, battery life, software, and even basic hardware priorities.

Here’s how these two phones compare.

Size and design

At first glance, the Vivo X300 FE and iPhone 17 look like they belong to the same category. The Vivo measures 150.8 × 71.8 × 8 mm, while the iPhone 17 comes in slightly smaller at 149.6 × 71.5 × 8 mm.

However, the two phones have notable differences in weight. The Vivo X300 FE weighs 191 grams, while the iPhone 17 is lighter at 177 grams. That 14-gram difference can make the iPhone feel a bit easier to hold over long periods.

Both phones use glass on the front and back with aluminum frames. Apple uses its Ceramic Shield 2 protection on the front glass, while Vivo sticks with a standard glass front. 

The iPhone 17 carries IP68 certification for immersion up to 6 meters, while the Vivo X300 FE has both IP68 and IP69, which also covers high-pressure water jets but only guarantees immersion up to 1.5 meters.

Displays are similar, but not identical

The Vivo X300 FE has a 6.31-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a resolution of 1216 × 2640 and a pixel density of around 461 ppi. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 features a 6.3-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED panel with 1206 × 2622 resolution and about 460 ppi.

Both support 120Hz refresh rates, which is notable since Apple only recently began bringing ProMotion-style refresh rates to its non-Pro lineup. Where they diverge is in brightness and display features.

The Vivo X300 FE claims up to 5000 nits peak brightness, while the iPhone 17 lists 1000 nits typical brightness, 1600 nits high-brightness mode, and up to 3000 nits peak. Apple also supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision, along with an anti-reflective coating.

Performance and chipset

Both phones are powered by new 3nm processors, but they come from different worlds. The Vivo X300 FE uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, featuring Oryon V3 cores and an Adreno 829 GPU. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 runs on the Apple A19 chip.

Historically, Apple’s A-series chips have focused on strong single-core performance and tight software optimization. Qualcomm’s latest flagship processors usually emphasize multi-core performance and GPU improvements for gaming.

Memory configurations include 12GB of RAM on the X300 FE, while the iPhone 17 features 8GB of RAM. Both are paired with either 256GB or 512GB storage.

Of course, raw specs rarely tell the whole story. Apple’s control over both hardware and software means the iPhone often performs smoothly even with less RAM. Meanwhile, Android flagships typically rely on larger memory pools to manage multitasking.

Software

As always, the biggest talk comes down to the software. The Vivo X300 FE runs Android 16 with Vivo’s OriginOS 6 interface on top. The company promises up to five major Android upgrades, which is a relatively long support window in the Android ecosystem.

The iPhone 17 runs iOS 26, with updates expected for many years beyond its launch. Apple’s software experience tends to emphasize consistency and ecosystem integration. Android phones, including Vivo’s, offer more customization and flexibility.

For users, the choice between the two phones will come down almost entirely to whether they prefer iOS or Android.

Cameras

The Vivo X300 FE wins in terms of optics with its triple-camera system. It has a:

• 50MP main camera
• 50MP periscope telephoto with 3× optical zoom
• 8MP ultrawide camera

The inclusion of a periscope lens means the X300 FE can offer true optical zoom beyond the main camera.

On the other hand, the iPhone 17 has a dual rear-camera setup:

• 48MP main camera
• 48MP ultrawide camera

Apple doesn’t include a dedicated telephoto camera on the base iPhone 17, which means zoom photography will likely rely more on digital cropping.

However, the iPhone supports Dolby Vision HDR recording and multiple frame-rate options up to 4K at 60fps. Vivo supports 4K recording as well, but Apple typically focuses more heavily on video features. 

For selfies, Vivo includes a 50MP front camera, while the iPhone 17 has an 18MP ultrawide camera paired with a 3D depth sensor used for Face ID.

Battery and charging

Vivo wins in hardware in this department, too. It has a 6500mAh battery, significantly larger than the 3692mAh battery inside the iPhone 17. The former charges at 90W wired, 40W wireless speed, and also supports wireless charging. 

Apple’s charging system is slower by comparison. The iPhone 17 supports wired charging capable of reaching 50 percent in around 20 minutes and 25W wireless charging through MagSafe or Qi2.

Connectivity and extra features

Both phones support modern connectivity features such as Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and a wide range of global navigation systems. The Vivo X300 FE also includes an infrared port. 

On Apple’s behalf, the iPhone 17 includes Ultra Wideband support, satellite communication for emergency services, and deeper integration with Apple services like Find My. 

For biometrics, Vivo uses an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner under the display, while Apple relies on Face ID with its front-facing 3D sensor system.

Two different interpretations of a flagship

The Vivo X300 FE and iPhone 17 are roughly the same size and price, but they are two very different ideas of what a compact flagship can be.

Vivo is heavy on hardware with a larger battery, more RAM, faster charging, and a dedicated telephoto camera. The iPhone focuses more on software integration, camera processing, and ecosystem features. 

Neither approach is necessarily better. It mostly depends on what someone values more in a phone.

Apple just introduced the MacBook Neo as its most affordable laptop at $599. This is a Mac designed for people who might otherwise buy a Chromebook or a cheaper Windows laptop. And at first glance, it’s really captivating.

It has an aluminum chassis, weighs just 1.23kg, and comes in four bright colors. The laptop features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, dual speakers with Dolby Atmos, a 1080p webcam, and up to 16 hours of battery life.

But once you look past the bright colors and the relatively low price, the compromises start to show. To reach this price point, Apple has trimmed back several features that users might expect from a modern MacBook. Some of those changes may not matter much to casual users, but others stand out when you compare them with the company’s more expensive laptops.

Here are five limitations of the MacBook Neo that you must know before buying Apple’s new entry-level laptop.

It doesn’t use a full-power laptop chip

One of the most unusual aspects of the MacBook Neo is its processor.

Instead of using one of Apple’s laptop-focused chips, like those found in the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, Apple chose the A18 Pro, the same chip it used in the iPhone 16 Pro.

This choice alone makes it clear where Apple sees the Neo in its lineup. A-series chips are typically designed for iPhones and iPads, not laptops. While they’re powerful and efficient, they aren’t built with the same thermal headroom or performance expectations as Apple’s M-series processors.

The version of the chip used in the MacBook Neo is also slightly reduced. The iPhone version features a 6-core CPU and a 6-core GPU, while the MacBook Neo ships with a 6-core CPU but only a 5-core GPU.

For basic tasks like browsing, document editing, or streaming, the chip should still be more than capable. Apple is also using a fanless design, which means the laptop operates completely silently. But for heavier workloads like video editing, the Neo may fall short compared with laptops powered by Apple’s M-series chips.

Limited memory and slower memory bandwidth

Memory is another area where Apple has made clear compromises. The MacBook Neo comes with 8GB of RAM, and unlike many other Apple computers, users cannot upgrade it when ordering the device. That means buyers are locked into the base configuration.

By comparison, newer Mac models now start with 16GB of RAM, including updated versions of the MacBook Air.

Because Apple uses unified memory architecture — where the CPU and GPU share the same memory pool — the amount of RAM can affect multiple parts of the system at once. Lower memory limits may become noticeable when running many browser tabs, multitasking across apps, or working with large files.

There’s also a difference in memory bandwidth. The MacBook Neo offers 60GB/s, which is less than half of what the MacBook Air provides.

The display loses several premium features

Apple is still calling the screen on the MacBook Neo a Liquid Retina display, but it’s not the same type of panel used in the company’s other laptops.

The 13-inch display has a resolution of 2408 × 1506, supports 1 billion colors, and reaches 500 nits of brightness, which matches the brightness level of the MacBook Air. However, there are several missing features.

First, the display only covers the sRGB color gamut, rather than the wider P3 color space supported by the MacBook Air since it switched to Apple silicon in 2020.

The display also does not support True Tone, Apple’s technology that automatically adjusts color temperature based on ambient lighting.

And perhaps more surprisingly, the MacBook Neo doesn’t include an ambient light sensor at all. That means the system cannot automatically adjust screen brightness depending on the environment.

No Magnetic Charging

Finally, the MacBook Neo removes a few physical hardware features that are common on other MacBooks.

One of the biggest differences is charging. Unlike the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, the Neo does not include a MagSafe magnetic charging port. 

Instead, it relies on two USB-C ports, both located on the left side of the laptop. One of these ports supports USB 3 speeds up to 10Gb/s, while the other is limited to USB 2 speeds up to 480Mb/s.

Using USB-C for charging is not unusual, but MagSafe has become a popular feature because it detaches easily if someone trips over the charging cable. Also, it clears the USB-C port for other tasks.

Keyboard without backlight

Last but not least, there are compromises in keyboard and trackpad, too.

The keyboard does not include backlighting. It been a standard for MacBooks to include a backlit keyboard, but Neo is an exception.

Meanwhile, the trackpad is a simpler physical multi-touch trackpad instead of Apple’s Force Touch design. That means it lacks pressure sensitivity, force click features, and pressure-sensitive drawing.

Even Touch ID is optional. The base 256GB model doesn’t include it, though it is available if users upgrade to the 512GB version.

Apple’s latest iPad Air refresh has started appearing in early benchmarks, and the numbers suggest the tablet performs closer to the iPad Pro than many might have expected. Shortly after the announcement, the first Geekbench 6 results for the M4-powered iPad Air began circulating online. In the test, the tablet scored 3,714 in single-core and 12,296 in multi-core performance.

Those numbers put it surprisingly close to the Apple iPad Pro (M4), which typically lands around 3,691 single-core and 13,663 multi-core in the same benchmark. In other words, single-threaded performance is nearly identical, while the Air trails the Pro by roughly 10% in multi-core workloads.

That gap isn’t particularly surprising once you look at the chip configurations. The iPad Air uses an 8-core version of the M4, with three performance cores and five efficiency cores. The iPad Pro, meanwhile, carries a 10-core variant with four performance cores and six efficiency cores.

The extra cores in the Pro help when software can scale across many threads — things like exporting large video projects or heavy multitasking. But for everyday work, the difference may be harder to notice. Tasks like browsing, media consumption, note-taking, and even most creative workloads rarely saturate all available cores.

That positioning keeps the Air noticeably cheaper than the Pro lineup, while still delivering Apple’s newest silicon. If these early benchmarks hold up in broader testing, the M4 iPad Air may end up occupying a sweet spot in Apple’s tablet lineup — offering most of the performance of the Pro models without the same price tag. For many buyers, the extra cores in the Pro simply won’t make a meaningful difference in daily use.

The M4 iPad Air is already available for pre-orders, with retail availability reportedly scheduled for March 11. Pricing starts at about 4,799 yuan in China (roughly $659) for the 11-inch model with 128GB storage, while the 13-inch version begins around 6,499 yuan (~$899). Pricing and availability may vary by region.

Apple has introduced updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models powered by its latest M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. The new machines focus on improving performance for demanding creative, development, and AI workloads while also adding faster storage and improved connectivity. The announcement expands Apple’s professional laptop lineup following the earlier debut of the base M5 chip.

MacBook Pro with M5 Pro, M5 Max specifications and features

The new MacBook Pro models run on Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, built on a new Fusion Architecture that connects two dies into a single system on a chip. This design integrates the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, media engine, unified memory controller and Thunderbolt support on one platform, helping deliver higher performance for complex workloads.

Both chips feature an 18-core CPU made up of six high-performance “super cores” and twelve efficiency-focused performance cores, offering up to 30 percent higher performance in professional tasks. The graphics subsystem has also been upgraded with a next-generation GPU that scales up to 20 cores on M5 Pro and up to 40 cores on M5 Max. Each GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator designed to speed up AI processing.

Apple says the chips can deliver more than four times the peak GPU compute for AI compared with the previous generation, while also improving ray tracing performance for demanding visual effects and 3D rendering.

The laptops support up to 64GB unified memory on M5 Pro and up to 128GB on M5 Max, with memory bandwidth reaching 307GB/s and 614GB/s respectively. Storage now starts at 1TB and can go up to 8TB. Other features include a Liquid Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Thunderbolt 5 ports, a new N1 wireless chip with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, studio-quality microphones and a six-speaker system with Spatial Audio. Apple claims battery life can reach up to 24 hours depending on usage.

MacBook Pro with M5 Pro, M5 Max price and availability

Apple has opened pre-orders for the new MacBook Pro models, with sales beginning on March 11. In the United States, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro chip starts at $2,199, while higher configurations cost more depending on memory, storage and GPU options.

The larger 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro processor starts at $2,699, while models powered by the M5 Max chip begin at $3,599, going higher depending on configuration choices such as GPU cores and memory capacity.

Apple may have unintentionally revealed the name of its rumored affordable MacBook ahead of its latest product announcements. A regulatory listing briefly appeared on Apple’s website referencing a device called the MacBook Neo. The listing disappeared soon after, but the brief appearance has fuelled speculation about a new entry-level Mac laptop.

MacBook Neo leak hints at Apple’s affordable Mac laptop

Same design, familiar feel

On the outside, this is still very much the MacBook Air people know. Apple is keeping the same chassis design, flat edges, a thin profile, and a lightweight build. The 13-inch version weighs 1.23kg, while the 15-inch model comes in at 1.51kg. Color options include sky blue, silver, starlight, and midnight. 

The 13-inch model continues to feature a 13.6-inch LCD display with a 2560 x 1664 resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate. Up top, there’s still a 12MP Center Stage webcam, which automatically adjusts framing during video calls. 

M5 chip takes center stage in new MacBook Air

The real story here is the M5 chip. Apple is offering two GPU configurations: one with an 8-core graphics processor and another with a 10-core graphics processor. 

The new MacBook Air M5 also allows users to customize RAM, SSD capacity, keyboard options, and even the matching power adapter. Apple claims the SSD read and write speeds are now twice as fast as the previous generation. 

Connectivity also gets a bump. The laptop includes Apple’s upgraded N1 wireless chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 6, and Thread networking technology.

A new report out of Korea suggests Apple has agreed to a steep price increase for LPDDR5X memory supplied by Samsung. According to financial outlet Dealsite, citing industry sources, Apple is now paying roughly double for these low-power DRAM modules.

LPDDR5X isn’t some minor component. It’s the RAM used across Apple’s modern silicon lineup, from iPhones and iPads to Macs.

What makes this interesting is how the negotiation reportedly played out. Samsung’s semiconductor division (DS) was initially aiming for around a 60% price increase for LPDDR5X destined for iPhone production. But in what appears to have been a classic anchoring tactic, Samsung reportedly opened discussions demanding a 100% hike.

Sources claim Apple agreed to the full increase during urgent talks focused on securing supply for the first half of 2026. One insider quoted in the report summed it up bluntly: smartphone brands are heating up to secure memory inventory.

The broader shortage isn’t happening in isolation. Demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), particularly for AI data centers driven by companies like Nvidia, has pulled manufacturing capacity toward more profitable enterprise-grade memory.

Apple’s foldable iPhone has been “coming soon” for years, at least according to leaks. Now, a new round of details suggests the company may finally be closing in on one of the biggest challenges that’s kept it out of the foldable race: the display crease.

One of the main criticisms of current foldables, including devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, is the crease. It’s not always a dealbreaker, but it’s noticeable. Reports over the years have suggested Apple wasn’t willing to enter the category until it could meaningfully reduce that crease.

A new leak from Chinese Weibo account Fixed Focus Digital claims that progress has been made. According to the post, Apple’s first foldable, widely referred to as the “iPhone Fold”, could feature an inner display with a crease depth of under 0.15 mm and a fold angle below 2.5 degrees.

Those numbers might not mean much at first glance, but they’re telling. A smaller crease depth means a shallower indentation along the fold, both visually and to the touch. For context, a human hair is roughly 0.05–0.1 mm thick, so anything under 0.15 mm would be relatively subtle. Current foldables often measure significantly deeper at the crease. If accurate, Apple’s implementation would be among the flattest we’ve seen so far: not invisible, but close.

The display itself is reportedly being supplied by Samsung Display, using newer materials and improved lamination techniques to better distribute stress along the hinge.

Beyond the screen, a few design details are also circulating. The rear camera module is said to resemble the minimalist layout of the iPhone Air, featuring two sensors: likely a main and an ultra-wide. Touch ID could return, embedded in the power button, replacing Face ID to save internal space and avoid additional cutouts on the inner display.

US accessory maker SANDMARC has officially introduced a new telephoto add-on built specifically for Apple’s latest iPhones. Called the Tetraprism 72mm lens, the accessory is designed to mount onto compatible iPhone models and extend their native zoom capabilities by an additional 3x.

The lens is fairly substantial in size. It weighs 180 grams, measures 70mm in height, and has a 40.5mm diameter. There’s also a 17mm threaded mount built into the design. The size is closer to a compact camera lens that happens to connect to your phone.

SANDMARC Tetraprism 72mm lens for iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro

According to SANDMARC, the lens is tuned specifically for the quad prism telephoto system expected on the iPhone 17 Pro series. When paired together, the company says the setup can reach up to 24x zoom through optical magnification. 

The accessory also works with older models. On the iPhone 16 Pro series and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, SANDMARC claims users can achieve up to 15x hybrid zoom. 

The main pitch here is image quality at distance. Instead of relying heavily on digital cropping, the Tetraprism 72mm lens uses multi-element, multi-layer coated glass to reduce glare and maintain color accuracy. The company also points to improved optical compression, which can help with subject separation and give photos more natural depth. 

The design is modular. It attaches directly to a dedicated iPhone lens case and works with other SANDMARC filters and accessories. The company says the lens is good for wildlife photography, events, and landscape clicks. 

Chinese smartphone makers, in particular, have started offering a teleconverter set for their Ultra phones on their own. The latest Xiaomi 17 Ultra, for instance, comes with a 4.3x teleconverter lens.

It’s unlikely that Apple will explore this route anytime soon. So our best bet is to rely on accessory brands like SANDMARC for it.

Samsung stayed on top of Europe’s smartphone market in 2025, but Apple was the one that really moved the needle.

Fresh data from Omdia shows Europe shipped 134.2 million smartphones last year. That’s down just 1% from 2024, not a dramatic drop, but it signals demand is still soft. Between tighter consumer spending and regulatory shifts like mandatory USB-C and eco-design requirements, the market never really found strong momentum.

Even so, the big names tightened their grip. Samsung and Apple together accounted for 62% of all shipments in the region.

Samsung held the No. 1 spot with 46.6 million units shipped, translating to a 35% market share — up slightly from 34% a year earlier. Growth was modest, roughly 200,000 additional units year-over-year, but the company managed to steady things after a slow start. Things picked up later in the year, helped by aggressive pricing on the Galaxy A16 and particularly strong demand for the Galaxy A56, which reportedly ended up as Europe’s best-selling smartphone overall in 2025.

Apple, meanwhile, had the stronger growth story.

Apple shipped 36.9 million iPhones in Europe, up 6% year-over-year, reaching a record 27% market share in the region. Much of that came from steady upgrade cycles and strong demand for the iPhone 16 series. The iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro Max performed well at the high end.

Xiaomi remained in third place with 21.8 million shipments and a 16% share, though volumes dipped slightly. Motorola followed with 7.7 million units (6% share), down 5% year-over-year. Honor broke into the top five with 3.8 million units and a 3% share, showing noticeable momentum toward the end of the year.

Overall, the market looks increasingly split. Premium devices continued to drive growth, while the budget segment stayed under pressure. Samsung leaned on its mid-range strength, Apple capitalized on premium upgrades, and both extended their lead.

Europe accounted for 10.8% of global smartphone shipments in 2025. Not the largest region, but still an important one.

Apple’s next wave of iPhones may bring an interesting split in design philosophy: bold on the Pro side, restrained on the foldable.

In his February 22 edition of the Power On, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared new details about the color options currently being tested for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro lineup, as well as Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone.

A new red for the Pro models?

According to Gurman’s supply-chain sources, Apple is experimenting with a “deep red” finish for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. If it makes it to production, it would be the first time a Pro model has launched in red.

This isn’t expected to be a bright red finish. Instead, the tone is described as darker, closer to burgundy or wine. Earlier rumors mentioning brown or purplish shades may have been referencing variations of this same concept.

Apple has occasionally used bold colors to differentiate Pro models in recent years. Last year’s standout Pro color reportedly performed well in some markets, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Apple continues leaning into distinctive flagship hues.

That said, nothing is final. Color testing happens months ahead of launch, and some finishes never make it past internal prototypes.

Foldable stays conservative

On the other end of the spectrum is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, often referred to as the iPhone Fold. Gurman suggests Apple is planning to keep things simple for its debut foldable. Instead of experimenting with bold finishes, the company is said to be focusing on classic tones like black, dark gray, and silver or white.

For now, the picture forming is fairly clear: the Pro models may take a bit of a design risk with a darker red option, while the foldable plays it safe for its first outing. If accurate, it would be a small but telling glimpse into how Apple is positioning its next-generation hardware.

Apple’s ultra-thin iPhone Air was already designed to stand out, but one modder has taken it in a completely different direction, by making the back transparent and adding something Apple deliberately left out: a physical SIM slot.

The project was documented by YouTuber Linzin Tech. In a 22-minute video, he walks through the process of turning the standard iPhone Air into a clear-backed, SIM-enabled custom build.

The first step involved removing the opaque coating from the rear glass panel. Using a laser process, the modders carefully stripped away the paint layer without damaging key components underneath, particularly the MagSafe coil, which sits just beneath the glass.

Once the coating was removed, the result was a fully transparent back, revealing the battery, logic board layout, shielding, and internal connectors. The Apple logo remains visible, but now it floats above exposed hardware rather than a solid color finish.

Adding what Apple removed

The bigger challenge came next: installing a nano-SIM tray into a phone designed to rely entirely on eSIM.

To make room, the team milled a cutout into the bottom frame of the device. That modification required removing the original Taptic Engine, Apple’s large and finely tuned haptic motor, because there simply wasn’t enough internal space to accommodate both it and a SIM tray.

In its place, a smaller third-party vibration motor was installed. The SIM reader itself was wired in through board-level microsoldering, and according to the video, the modified phone successfully connects to mobile networks using a physical SIM card. It’s a significant hardware alteration, especially considering how tightly packed ultra-thin smartphones are.

As impressive as the mod looks, it wasn’t without consequences. Removing thermal pads during the laser process reportedly affected heat dissipation, leading to faster throttling under sustained load. The structural modifications also eliminated the phone’s IP68 water and dust resistance. And, of course, any warranty coverage was gone the moment the frame was cut open.

For most users, the trade-offs wouldn’t make sense. But for hardware enthusiasts, it’s a fascinating reminder that even the most closed-off designs can still be opened up.
