Corning, the company behind the screen protection found on most smartphones, has introduced its latest innovation, the Gorilla Glass Ceramic. The new glass is designed to improve drop resistance and reduce cracked screens without compromising clarity.

As the name suggests, Gorilla Glass Ceramic incorporates ceramic materials, which Corning claims make it more impact-resistant than traditional aluminosilicate glass. According to the company, the material can withstand 10 consecutive one-meter drops onto surfaces replicating asphalt (180-grit sandpaper). But it’s not the toughest option Corning has.

That title still belongs to Gorilla Glass Armor 2, which Corning says can survive drops from 2.2 meters onto a concrete-like surface. The distinction matters—concrete generally absorbs less impact than asphalt, making Armor 2 the more durable choice. For those unaware, Armor 2 also uses ceramic materials. 

Corning hasn’t detailed which brands will adopt Gorilla Glass Ceramic, but the company confirmed that a Motorola device featuring the new glass will launch in the coming months. However, it stopped short of naming the specific model.

For now, Gorilla Glass Ceramic seems to be positioned as a mid-tier alternative—more durable than standard aluminosilicate glass, but not quite at the level of Armor 2.

Corning Incorporated has just launched Gorilla Glass 7i, a new product specifically designed for mid-range and affordable smartphones. This new upgrade will provide better protection against drops and scratches compared to older Gorilla Glass versions used in many mid-range devices currently on the market.

The 7i can survive a drop of up to 1 meter onto a rough surface

Corning cites the prevalence of older Gorilla Glass versions (like Gorilla Glass 5 launched in 2016) in mid-range phones as a reason for introducing 7i. They acknowledge the need for a more modern solution that caters to budget-conscious phone makers while still fitting the trend of high-quality displays in mid-range devices.

According to Corning’s press release, the new glass offers significant improvements in durability. Their lab tests indicate that 7i can survive drops of up to 1 meter onto a rough surface (like asphalt) whereas competing aluminosilicate glasses typically fail at much lower drop heights (around 0.5 meters or less).

Beyond drop protection, Gorilla Glass 7i boasts twice the scratch resistance compared to some other lithium aluminosilicate cover glasses on the market. This seems like a promising new solution for manufacturers of mid-range smartphones, offering improved protection without breaking the bank.

Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is the successor to the Gorilla Glass Victus that was launched back in the year 2020. Victus 2 was unveiled by Corning in December 2022, and the glass offers a higher drop resistance than its predecessor, providing enhanced protection for the smartphones it is used in. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is expected to feature in upcoming smartphones, starting with the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S23 lineup, as confirmed by Corning itself.

Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is designed to help phones survive falls on rough surfaces while preserving the scratch resistance of Victus+. The company claims that It redefines toughness by resisting drops on rough surfaces like concrete, which is the world’s most commonly used engineered material. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 also prioritizes the environment by receiving an Environmental Claim Validation for containing an average of 22% pre-consumer recycled content, as verified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). This mark requires regular audits and testing to be retained. 

Stephanie Choi, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, further stated that Samsung is dedicated towards incorporating sustainability into their product lifecycle and working with partners such as Corning to enhance performance while minimizing our environmental impact. 

Previously, Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus+ was featured in the Galaxy S22, which was launched last year in 2022. Corning says that the drop performance of the Victus 2 has improved by up to 1m on 80-grit and up to 2m on 180-grit. In lab tests, the latest-generation glass is seen withstanding one-meter (hip height) drops on concrete, whereas it survived two meters (head height) drops on an asphalt surface. Victus 2 also ensures 4x better scratch performance compared to its competitors. Once the Galaxy S23 makes its way into consumers’ hands, it will be interesting to see how Victus 2 holds up in real-life phone-endangering situations.

Corning has launched the Gorilla Glass Victus 2. It is the successor to the Victus that was announced back in 2020. The newest generation glass from the company is touted to offer improved drop resistance. Corning says that Gorilla Glass has been used in eight billion devices, across 45 major brands and 85 percent of buyers in China, India, and the US consider durability as the most important factor in smartphone purchase. 

Smartphones today are highly prone to potential damage since the glass is quite fragile and due to thinner, and lighter designs. Additionally, the larger the screen diagonal is, the more stress will be put on the glass when it is dropped. Corning’s latest generation Gorilla Glass Victus 2 focuses more on drop resistance. The company has adopted a new glass composition which will potentially save devices from accidental drops on rough surfaces. Asphalt can leave the screen scratched up while concrete in the worst cases can shatter the display glass. 

Corning says that the drop performance of the Victus 2 has improved by up to 1m on 80-grit and up to 2m on 180-grit. In lab tests, the latest-generation glass is seen withstanding one-meter (hip height) drops on concrete whereas it survived two meters (head height) drops on an asphalt surface. Victus 2 also ensures 2x scratch resistance than previous versions and 4x better scratch performance compared to its competitors. 

In a statement, Corning said “today’s smartphones are nearly 15% heavier, and screen sizes are up to 10% larger, than they were four years ago – increasing both the stress on the cover glass and the probability of damage. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 redefines tough for consumers and OEMs”. 

The new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, Notebook PCs, cameras, and more devices. Smartphones boasting the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 are expected to hit the markets in the coming months. Although there is no word on which would be the first device to adorn the latest generation glass, we assume it to be Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series.

Samsung unveiled the much-awaited Galaxy S22 series of flagship smartphones yesterday. The new lineup of handsets was accompanied by the latest generation of premium Android tablets dubbed as the Galaxy Tab S8 series. These two families of devices have two things in common – Armor Aluminum and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+.

Last August, Samsung debuted the frames made of ‘armor aluminum’ on the Galaxy Z Fold3 and the Galaxy Z Flip3. The company claims that it is the strongest aluminum used in modern smartphones.

Within a year, this material is now used on the Galaxy S22 series as well as the Galaxy Tab S8 series. For the latter, the firm says that it provides over 30% more scratch-resistant and 40% less prone to bending than the Galaxy Tab S7 series.

Apart from new frames, these phones and tablets also come with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection for their displays. All three handsets, including the vanilla Galaxy S22 sport this glass on their back as well. For those unaware, the last-gen regular Galaxy S21 features a plastic rear panel.

Anyway, as YouTuber Zack (JerryRigEverything) says ‘Glass is glass and glass breaks’. Hence, despite featuring the strongest aluminum and glass, users may want to protect their latest Samsung Galaxy devices from accidental falls by using a case.

Earlier this year, we had reported on LG Innotek and Corning working on Liquid Lens technology that could seemingly benefit the smartphone photography. Now, an from the latter firm had touted the various benefits of this new lens technology.

In an interview with TheElec, Frederic Laune, business manager at Corning Varioptic Lenses stated that liquid lens can help with changing local lengths in cameras. The manager also added that the company is looking to expand the applications of this technology in various other industries like the medical and industrial fields. For those unaware, liquid lens is basically filled with liquid materials inside the physical lens that can change the curvature of the lens by using currents and voltages to control the focal length of the camera.

Laune stated that liquid lens can be used to solve the focal length changing issue, which is when the distance between the camera and subject is constantly changing. He said that the new lens technology can basically focus on a particular object even if there were varying distances in between. Conventional lens technology usually had the lens being placed close to the image sensor or further away from it to maintain the focus on the object. However, these mechanical solutions are vulnerable to external shock and increase the power consumption of devices while being slow.

So, liquid lens technology aims to be a power efficient alternative, which is more effective and quicker as well. Furthermore, this is the reason why industrial cameras rarely use these lens solutions, as per the Manager. Liquid lens is also durable against shakes external shocks, making it practical in various fields like augmented reality.

Corning, the company best known for making Gorilla Glass, a protective glass layer for smartphone displays, has now launched its latest composite which is a new version of Gorilla Glass optimized for smartphone camera lenses — Gorilla Glass DX and DX+.

This isn’t technically new given that the company had launched Gorilla Glass DX in July 2018 for smartwatch faces. However, Corning says that it had to reformulate the DX and DX+ composite for smartphones so that it offers scratch resistance without compromising photo and video quality.

The company says that the new composite let in 98 percent of ambient light while still being just as scratch-resistant as typical Gorilla Glass. In comparison, lens covers with traditional anti-reflective coatings only let in about 95 percent of light, says Corning.

So far, it hasn’t been announced what phones will feature the new glass composites, but Corning does say that Samsung is signed on as the first company to use the new Gorilla Glass camera lens covers. The South Korean giant has its Galaxy Unpacked event scheduled for 11th August and we could see this new glass on one of the devices that is set to launch at the event.

LG Innotek and Corning are jointly working on a new project. This collaboration between the brands is for the research on a new liquid lens technology, which could potentially bring benefits for the photography aspect of smartphones.

According to TheElec report, the news arrives from patent filings that were recently spotted. Both brands have 50-50 stakes in the nine patents that are related to the liquid lens technology. The core technologies listed in these patents include a liquid lens system, how to control a camera lens (which features the liquid lens), and lens curvature varying instrument. The liquid lens has a vinyl bag shaped lens with liquid material. So, the lens is capable of going in and out of focus depending on the curvature of the liquid that can be changed with a current of voltage.

To put things simply, unlike a conventional lens, the liquid lens does not have to move to control focal length. This would enable smartphone makers to make thinner camera modules since the liquid lens changes as per the requirements and does not physically move. Furthermore, it could even bring various improvements in the camera performance of smartphones as well.

The new technology could potentially offer faster and more accurate focusing abilities, which is useful in video captures. On the other hand, the technology could also enable OEMs to develop better stabilization for cameras, which, in turn, would lead to clearer low light images as well. Unfortunately, this technology has yet to be adopted commercially by any brand as of right now, so stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.

POCO is gearing for a launch event both in India and other global markets. At the event, the company is expected to launch the flagship killer POCO X3 Pro. Surprisingly, POCO India hasn’t revealed the name officially yet. However, today, the company has teased the presence of Corning Gorilla Glass on it.

POCO India, in an official tweet, shared a video of the toughness test of the Gorilla Glass 6. If you recall, Corning launched the Gorilla Glass 6 back in 2018 with 2x durability than the predecessor.

Anyway, the upcoming POCO X3 Pro‘s display will feature the Gorilla Glass 6 with improved scratch resistance and durability. In the video, POCO also shows a test where the Gorilla Glass is able to handle a load of about 28.65Kgf. That said, the company hasn’t confirmed if both the front and back of the device will have it.

Yesterday, we saw leaked renders of the POCO X3 Pro and the device looks very similar to its smaller sibling, POCO X3. And the non-Pro, which launched in September 2020, has an LCD display protected by Gorilla Glass 5 and not 6. Looks like POCO is making a few changes to make the flagship killer worthy of its price.

The POCO X3 Pro is said to arrive in Phantom Black, Metal Bronze, and Frost Blue color options. The device will have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and a supposedly FHD+ display with a punch-hole at the center.

Corning has announced that it is currently expanding the production of its Gen 10.5 liquid crystal display (LCD) glass substrate factories in China. The move arrives after high demand for TVs and other IT products.

According to TheElec report, the company stated that the healthy demand for TVs and other products have caused them to see high demand, especially for large sized TVs. Over the last year, the demand for 75 inch TVs grew by over 60 percent in comparison to 2019. At the moment, the Gen 10.5 has had the best production efficiency for large TV substrates. So, the company aims on expanding production at its Guangzhou and Wuhan plants in China.

Furthermore, Corning also has the Gen 8.5 glass substrates plants in Beijing and Chongqing. Tony Tripeny, the company’s CEO, stated that Corning is expecting sales of 3 billion US Dollars to 3.2 billion US Dollars within just the first quarter of this year. This mark an increase of over 20 percent year on year in comparison to 2020, which had it register 2.5 billion US Dollars in sales. Similarly, other display makers are also pushing towards raising production capacity in the region as well.

BOE is planning on running its Gen 10.5 LCD factory in Wuhan at full capacity for Q1 2021. It also another Gen 10.5 LCD site in Hefei, with both factories having a production capacity of 120,000 substrates per month. Currently, the prices for LCD panels is on the rise due to the Coronavirus pandemic, which delayed the production for various top display makers like BOE, TCL, and HKC. Meanwhile, major LCD makers Samsung and LG are downscaling the production of this type of display since last year.

Corning has reached the final stage of development for its cover glass for foldable smartphones. The US based company made the announcement earlier this week, making the company an upcoming supplier of Samsung’s foldable smartphones.

According to TheElec report, Corning launching its own glass cover for foldable handsets will raise the competition with German based Schott to supply them to Samsung. As per a Corning spokesperson, the company is currently at the final stage of the development of foldable glass cover solutions, with mass production and commercialization to begin in 2021.

Back in September 2020, the company had said that it was testing samples and that they planned to launch the cover glass officially within the next 12 months. At the moment, Schott has been the sole supplier of the substrate glass used in the ultra thin glass cover made by Samsung Electronics for its foldable smartphones. For the foldable OLED panel itself, however, Samsung Display‘s subsidiary processes Corning’s glass.

The launch of the cover glass from Corning will also lead to rising competition between Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display over processing the cover glass. At the moment, Samsung Display has signed a three year exclusive purchasing deal with Schott for their glass substrates. However, Samsung Electronics believes that the exclusive contract will limit the chance to reduce unit prices of foldable display panes and is planning to build its own supply chain by procuring glass substrates made by Corning.

The iPhone 12 series are covered in glass on both sides. However, the glass on the front is a different type called Ceramic Shield and it does a very good job at protecting the screen as seen in the drop test video below.

Ceramic Shield is a new type of glass developed by Corning and Apple says it is tougher than any smartphone glass and provides 4x better drop performance. The drop test video made by PhoneBuff decided to see if this new display protection is as good as advertised by doing a drop test of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

Long story short – if your new iPhone 12 phone falls, pray it lands face flat. As seen in the video, Ceramic Shield is indeed really great at surviving falls. After several drops, the display is uncracked and it works well. However, the glass on the back which is a different type is less strong and doesn’t even survive the first drop for the iPhone 12.

The Ceramic Shield isn’t the only addition that Apple has made to make the iPhone 12 series more durable, but it has also designed the glass to flush with the edge of the phone, so when it falls, the aluminum frame (or stainless in the case of the Pro models) absorb the shock too.

It is important to remind you that the drop test was carried out in a controlled environment and real-life scenarios will be different with a chance that your phone hits an object before it even gets to the floor. So, we will advise you to get a case, at least to protect the back of the phone and the sides from scuff marks when the phone does fall from your hands.

Gorilla Glass, a specialized glass manufactured by Corning for electronics, especially handheld gadgets like smartphones is found anywhere. Over the years, Corning improved its glass and it is currently at its seventh generation called Gorilla Glass Victus. Though it is better than its predecessors, a report states that Apple and other smartphone manufacturers are looking to make Gorilla Glass even more durable by using diamond-like carbon(DLC) coatings.

A report posted on Seeking Alpha by Robert Castellano (via PhoneArena) quotes an Allstate subsidiary SquareTrade study from November 2018 that Americans dropped more than 50 million screens in 2017 and spent a whopping $3.4 billion to fix them. These repairs cost as less as $170 to up to $329.

A staggering amount of $14 billion had been spent in repairs by the people of the US from 2007 till 2017. One survey even revealed that iPhone users were six times more likely to damage their handsets than to either lose them or have stolen.

This is the reason why Apple and other smartphone companies are considering to make use of diamond-like carbon coatings over Gorilla Glass. This coating, with its properties like low friction, high hardness, and high corrosion resistance, can improve the durability of Gorilla Glass or any aluminosilicate glass.

DLC coatings also have properties like thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity. Therefore, they can be used as protective coatings not only on displays but also on sensors and flexible semiconductors.

Currently, three companies have developed systems to coat normal glass, Corning Gorilla Glass, and other aluminosilicate glasses with diamond-like carbon coatings. Two of them are Intevac – a public company and Denton Vacuum – a company with 50-year expertise in the equipment business.

Last but not least, this coating is reported to increase the cost of per display in pennies and therefore, it may not increase the overall cost of a finished smartphone by a higher margin.

Samsung is the forerunner of foldable smartphones. The company just launched Galaxy Z Fold2 a few hours ago as its third foldable device. Ahead of it, news broke out that Samsung Electronics has partnered with Corning to develop its own foldable glass.

The display, display cover, and hinge are the three main crucial hardware parts of a foldable smartphone. The original Galaxy Fold uses CPI (Colorless Polyimide) as display cover, which is not as durable as UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) used in the other two devices from the company – Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold2.

For those unaware, Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display are two independent companies. The latter supplies OLED panels for almost all the devices manufactured by former except for the upcoming Galaxy M51.

Samsung Display also supplies UTG for Samsung Electronics, which is manufactured by  DOWOO INSYS using glass substrates supplied by SCHOTT AG. Thus, the electronics division of Samsung has to pay a large amount of money for display and display cover supplies.

Back in April, a report by South Korea’s ETNews stated that Samsung Electronics was looking to manufacture UTG on its own to reduce the overall manufacturing cost of its foldables. That report mentioned that UTG used in Galaxy Z Flip costs $40 per unit compared to $2 for flat glass used in normal smartphones.

This is one of the reasons why foldables are expensive. But that could change in the coming years as Samsung Electronics has successfully joined hands with Corning to develop its own UTG as per a report by the same publication. This news comes after the company had patented three different types of screen covers for foldables, out of which, two of them involves UTG.

The new report states that “according to the display industry, Samsung Electronics IT & Mobile Communications Business has recently started receiving necessary glass substrates from Corning”.

That means the company will continue to improve its yield in the coming months so that it could be self-reliant as well as competitive to Samsung Display. This will further lead to competition among other glass manufacturers in the next few years eventually bringing down the cost of foldable smartphones as a whole.

On the other hand, Samsung Display has now begun to focus on diversifying its customers as it cannot rely on Samsung Electronics. In fact, it has already received orders for OLED  panels from Huawei for its foldable smartphones.

One phone accessory that has become really popular since touchscreen phones became mainstream is the screen protector. A screen protector can be made from a plastic film or can be made of glass, however, the aim is the same – to protect the display. Today, Xiaomi has announced the Mi Protective Glass for the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max.

The screen protector is made using Accessory Glass by Corning which is said to be an alkali-aluminosilicate glass with better protection than the one offered by generic soda-lime tempered glass. Compared to soda-lime tempered glass, this provides 5x the protection. Xiaomi says the glass has 9H hardness and claims it offers superior damage protection.

This is not the first Mi Protective Glass to be announced by Xiaomi. The manufacturer also announced for the Redmi Note 8 series last year. Just like the one for the Redmi Note 8 series, this too has a notch even though the Redmi Note 9 and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max have punch holes.

Actually, both the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max phones have Gorilla Glass 5 protection on both sides. Nevertheless, the Mi Protective Glass should provide additional protection for the displays of the two devices.

Corning has over the years built a towering reputation in the business of manufacturing tough glasses for smartphones, laptops, tablets, and wearables. In a bid to offer improved solutions and cement its place as a market leader, the company has officially announced its latest glass technology which represents a breakthrough in the technology. The Gorilla Glass Victus as it is called brings to the table a significantly better drop and scratch performance compared to competitive aluminosilicate glasses from other manufacturers.

Durability is one of the key considerations buyers put in perspective before bringing out their wallets. A survey carried out in three of the largest smartphone markets in the world – China, India, and the United States – shows that it is second only to the device brand.

Buyers place it ahead of important features such as screen size, camera quality, and device thinness. Most consumers were willing to pay a premium for improved durability. Also, feedback from more than 90,000 consumers analyzed by Corning shows that the importance of drop and scratch performance has nearly doubled in seven years.

The new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus performed superbly in lab tests. Corning says it achieved drop performance up to 2 meters when dropped onto hard, rough surfaces. This is far ahead of the competitive aluminosilicate glasses from other manufacturers which typically fail when dropped from less than 0.8 meters. In addition, the Gorilla Glass Victus has up to 2x improvement in scratch resistance compared to the Gorilla Glass 6. While it is up to 4x better than competitive aluminosilicate glasses.

Corning disclosed in the press release that the Gorilla Glass Victus will be adopted first by Samsung in the near future. Thus, speculations are rife that the new glass technology may feature on the Galaxy Note 20. If the Galaxy Note 20 misses on it, then we should be looking at next year’s Galaxy S30 series.

In the past few years, full-screen design, as well as different styles of screen notch, have been the trend in the smartphone industry. However, foldable phones and 5G took the centre stage last year. Already, a few foldable smartphones have been launched, notably by Huawei and Samsung. The Korean company s now rumoured to have decided to use Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) on the upcoming Galaxy Fold 2 phone.

Last year, Corning was reported to be working on a Gorilla Glass for foldable phones. Samsung and Corning are said to be working to accelerate development and to set up a supply chain in the US. Samsung will reportedly use Corning UTG on foldable phones coming out next year. This will not only reduce costs but also reduce the weight of the UTG solution added to the phone. Corning has been reportedly able to make a glass that’s just 0.1mm thick and can fold to a radius of 5mm. Other details as regards the strength of the glass are still unknown.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Fold 2 will be unveiled in August alongside the Galaxy Note20. There is the possibility of the company launching a 5G version of the Z Flip as well.

Zong Changqing, China’s Director of the Foreign Trade Department of the Ministry of Commerce, recently did an interview regarding the country’s commercial performance. He reveals a few interesting details, including that many foreign companies like SK Hynix, Corning and even Samsung have increased their investments in manufacturing in China, which is a bit of a surprise.

In manufacturing, foreign investment in electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing, and instrumentation manufacturing increased by 41.2% and 48.2%, respectively. According to the First Financial Report, Zong Changqing also stated that Samsung, SK Hynix, Corning Display, Caterpillar, Ineos, Panasonic, Exxon Mobil and other manufacturing giants have increased their investment in China by over $100 million.

The reason why it’s somewhat surprising is because a lot of companies were pulling out slightly from production in China since the whole Huawei debacle last year. The biggest example of this was Apple opening up new production plants in companies like India and Vietnam. To see the industry regain confidence in manufacturing in China could mean that things between US and China are calming down.

Along with this, in terms of attracting investment structure, China’s service industry will absorb 681.77 billion yuan of foreign capital in 2019, an increase of 12.5%. Foreign investment in information transmission, software and information technology services increased by 29.4%, and foreign investment in the leasing and business services industry increased by 20.6%.

Even though tablets, notebooks and laptops don’t fall down as often as a smartphone due to their large form factors and the fact that we don’t move the smart TV and laptop as often as we carry the smartphone, there are some chances that their display could get damaged. For instance, a child may throw a lawn tennis ball or any other toy on the television screen. Also, you may have your laptop in your bag and then it hits a hard surface with the impact on the display and similar situations. Thus, the Astra Glass designed for devices that are larger than smartphones comes in handy. However, we may likely not find the Astra Glass on budget or mid-range devices as Corning is reportedly positioning it as its most-premium protective glass for devices with larger displays. So any tablet, notebook or television with Astra Glass will likely be pretty expensive. Corning’s business director, Han Yim tips that the Astra Glass will provide manufacturers with “low total pitch variation, low total thickness variation, and low sag,” when it comes to high-end displays.

Corning is definitely gearing up for the emerging trend with reports that the company is working towards manufacturing a screen protector for foldable phones. Foldable phones like the Mate X use plastic polymers which enables the display to bend. However, plastic tends to crease after a certain number of folds and is also more prone to scratches. Now, the Galaxy Fold and Mate X are priced around $2000. Nobody would want to take such risk, especially when it is certain that the replacement screen won’t be anywhere near cheap.  On the other hand, a foldable glass display would be able to retain its structure regardless of the number of folds and it would hold up against scratches from keys and coins repeatedly. Thus, the company is working on glass-based protective screen.

Corning has been able to make a glass that’s just 0.1mm thick and can fold to a radius of 5mm. However, since this glass is too thin, it can’t be used on smartphones as it will easily shatter if dropped. Increasing the thickness of the glass without veering out of the 3-to5-millimetre bend radius range is a technical challenge and the company is currently working on improving it. The company is reportedly experimenting with the fusion of the rollable Willow Glass and Gorilla Glass presently. The technology involves immersing the glass into a molten salt solution. Unfortunately, this corrodes the transistors found in the display so Willow Glass is currently not suitable for smartphones. Corning believes a solution will pop-up in a few years time that would be drop-resistant and have a tighter bend radius.

Corning®, the top maker of protective glass used in smartphones announced Gorilla Glass 6 yesterday. However, that wasn’t the only product it unveiled. It also announced Gorilla Glass DX and Gorilla Glass DX+ for smartwatches.

Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ are glass composites exclusive to wearables at the moment. According to Corning, the new materials’ main selling point is that they enhance display readability.

When compared to standard glass, Gorilla Glass DX and Gorilla Glass DX+ have a 75% improvement in surface reflection and 50% increase in display contrast ratio without increasing the brightness level. With the latter, users will be able to see their displays better even at low brightness levels which means batteries can last longer.

Talking about the differences, Gorilla Glass DX brings enhanced visibility but the same level of scratch resistance as Gorilla Glass while Gorilla Glass DX+ adds a higher level of scratch resistance. In Corning’s own words, the scratch resistance level of DX+ approaches that of “alternative luxury cover materials”.

There is no time frame as to when we should expect the composites to hit the market. However, since we are just a month into the second half of 2018, there is a possibility we may see it in products launching later this year.

In simpler terms, the Gorilla Glass 6 is more resistant to damage than its predecessor. The new chemical composition makes it possible to increase the compression levels of the Gorilla Glass 6 because of which it does not break easily even after multiple drops.

Most smartphone OEMs are now launching smartphones with elongated form factor in order to house tall aspect ratio display. Moreover, many premium phones do not feature metal unibody design, but they come with glass backs. The inclusion of glass rear also promotes wireless charging on new phones. Hence, smartphone OEMs also ensure that their phones are fitted with highly durable glass panels so that they do not break easily.
