After the US trade sanctions against Huawei, the company has faced a lot of difficulties in obtaining silicon chips for its smartphones. With fewer chips for production, means fewer Huawei smartphones to sell as well. So what’s next for Huawei if they want to continue to stay relevant in the smartphone market?

Well for one, the company has already undergone a major shift in its smartphone pricing strategy. Previously pre-2019, the smartphone brand would churn out a lot of devices in the entry-level, mid-range, and flagship markets to sell globally to capture more market share in the smartphone industry. But since 2020, Huawei has gradually exited the entry-level and mid-range market, focusing only on its flagships.

Huawei P50 Pocket

Most notably, Huawei has taken a lot of risk by putting its foldable flagships like the Huawei Mate X2, Huawei Mate Xs 2 and the Huawei P50 Pocket. The foldables market for Huawei has been generating more revenue for the company compared to the conventional smartphone market. Although the cost of manufacturing foldables is higher, Huawei can mark up the selling price of its foldables significantly higher than conventional smartphones as well.

In addition, the foldable market also has less competition than for say the conventional flagship market. For example, the Huawei P50 Pro has to compete with the iPhone 13 Pro, Realme GT 2 Pro, OnePlus 10 Pro, Vivo X80 Pro, Xiaomi 12 Pro, etc. Meanwhile, the Huawei P50 Pocket only competes with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 and Motorola Razr. In turn, the company can sell more and earn more sales revenue per foldable sold than it would have otherwise sold a conventional Android flagship despite lower foldables sales volumes.

For the next 5 years, Huawei is still expected to stay in the smartphone market, but the company is expected to switch from a mainstream brand to a niche luxury smartphone brand selling innovative foldable smartphones. The brand is expected to release the Huawei P60 Pocket and Huawei Mate X3 this year as well and if you are interested in the latest technology from China, stay tuned to our coverage here at Gizmochina!

If the design seems familiar to you, that is because this is literally the Huawei Mate 40, but now “TD Tech” branded with an upgraded 5G chipset and upgraded cameras. Here are the features of this new TD Tech M40 smartphone, and the pricing of the device in China.

Let’s start with the design, the TD Tech M40 is housed within an aluminium build chassis that features a premium shiny matte glass finish with a circular camera island on its back, and a 3D curved AMOLED with a left punch hole upfront. The “TD Tech” branding is also printed on the back to let you know, that this is indeed the newer model.

The front display panel is a 6.5-inch FHD+ 60Hz AMOLED display with support for HDR 10+ content and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. The device is also rated for IP53 dust and water resistance to keep your phone safe from the light drizzle in the rain.

The main upgrade here is the processor, instead of using the outdated Kirin 9000 4G processor on the Huawei Mate 40, the TD Tech M40 features the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 Plus SoC instead. With the SoC change, the new TD Tech M40 features dual sim 5G connectivity, which allows for faster mobile data speeds, and improved CPU performance over its Kirin cousin.

Coming to the rear cameras, the TD Tech M40 has a triple camera setup. Instead of the 50MP sensor found on the Huawei Mate 40, the TD Tech M40 utilises a 64MP main sensor instead with Laser Autofocus, f/1.9 aperture and support for 4K video recording. The 2 others are also very competitive as well, with the ultra-wide being a 16MP f/2.2 sensor with an additional macro-photography mode and an 8MP telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom. You’ll also get a 13MP wide-angle selfie camera at the front, for when you want to fit more memories into your photo.

Another welcome addition to the device is also the inclusion of the 3.5mm headphone jack. The smartphone is also equipped with dual top-bottom stereo speakers for an immersive audio experience at home.

The device will be available in 3 gorgeous colours: Ceramic White, Secret Silver and Shiny Black. Its pricing for its two memory configurations is as follows:

However, the Chinese company has not given up and has continued to surprise with great offerings. And now, a patent has revealed that a wild Huawei Mate foldable smartphone with a tri-fold display is currently in the works.

The patent was filed back on March 1, 2021, with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and revealed a device that is somewhat similar to the Samsung Z Flex that was demonstrated last month. While the Huawei Mate foldable in question also folds in three places just like the Samsung model, it tops the latter by sporting a larger display.

Source: LetsGoDigital

The 41-page documentation released on September 10 also contains blueprints for the device that show a total of seven screen parts. Four of them are large and actually make up the viewing estate while the remaining three are basically creases to allow the display to fold.

The Huawei Mate foldable smartphone’s OS will allow content to be displayed on any one of the three segments (or displays) and the interface will adjust smartly and automatically adjust depending on how a user folds the phone. Various sensors also aid in this feat by accurately measuring the folding angle per screen part. When folded, the narrow screen segments that will form on the sides will be used to display various information such as time, network signal strength, and battery levels.

The device’s crazy design opens up a slew of use cases that are impossible on a regular smartphone. For example, the device can be placed on a table in various positions, allowing you to view content without having to tire your hands by holding it the entire time.

That said, the patent also talks about another device. This one isn’t as experimental as the aforementioned and is quite similar to the Huawei Mate X2 that was released early this year. Its design is comparable to the Samsung Fold series, meaning that it folds only once. However, it differs from the Samsung one in that it doesn’t have a separate front screen.

Huawei Mate X2

It is unclear when these devices will be hitting the markets. But LetsGoDigital says that they will only be released following the launch of a Huawei clamshell phone, that again can be compared to Samsung’s Z Flip 3. It is easy to understand from all this that Huawei has indeed set its crosshairs on Samsung and aims to make a comeback.

Back in 2019, the Chinese tech giant had applied for a patent, which was finally granted in its home country, China. In the patent, 16 colored product images can be observed that showcase designs with its existing Mate series of foldable handsets. Looking at the images, the upcoming Mate device can be unfolded to reveal a larger tablet size. The device bends inwards, similar to the Galaxy Fold, but features no selfie camera, with most fo the front being covered by the display.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei partners with STMicroelectronics to develop Chips for Smart Automotive Solutions and Smartphones

On the rear is where the real difference between previous generations and even the Galaxy Fold can be seen. The patent Mate smartphone has a quad camera module similar to the Mate Xs but also features a zoom lens for magnified shots this time around. The sensors are right next to a smaller secondary display that rounds the corner, acting as an extension of the primary display.

The square camera cutout on the camera module is what gives away the sensor since Huawei has released several models with a zoom lens in a similar manner. The company is expected to launch another foldable smartphone in the second half of 2020, and this might be the device in question. However, it is still too early to tell, and we will have to wait for an official announcement to provide any confirmation.

Well, the company may have decided to trademark this moniker just to defend itself from the competition, because other companies using similar names for their products might cause an issue to its branding. But recent leaks have suggested that the Mate X may really exist. A new page spotted on TENAA websites contains some info about a device with the model number NEO-AL00, which is said to be the Huawei Mate X.

According to some firmware files which recently surfaced, the Huawei device identified by the model number NEO-AL00 is a flagship phone. It sports the most powerful SoC ever released by Huawei: the octa-core Kirin 970, which is also the same as the Huawei Mate 10 and the upcoming P20. According to rumours, the letter A inside the model number stands for the configuration with 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. If it is really so, the alleged Huawei Mate X may be a high-end device, but note that it may not be the best flagship by the company.

Besides performance, it may also focus on the quality-price ratio, given that nowadays every flagship has at least 64 GB of internal storage. Recently, the customer service of Huawei mall hinted at the arrival of new a series of smartphones, and this is another info which makes us think that Huawei Mate X is in development.

RELATED: Huawei’s 2018 Lineup Leaks, Mentions Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro

At MWC 2018, Huawei released a device with a similar name. We are referring to the flagship convertible tablet MateBook X Pro, which comes with an Intel Core i7 8th gen CPU in its most powerful configuration. Everything seems to be suggesting that if a Huawei Mate X does exists, it will be one of the most important handsets by the Chinese giant.

The company is expected to launch the first phone with the 5G connectivity sometime by October to December 2019. At the most important trade show of the year related to mobile devices, the Chinese giant announced the first commercial 5G chipset. Its name is Balong 5G01 and it is the first with support to the 3GPP standard. It is faster than the latest modem by Qualcomm, the Snapdragon X24, which can reach a maximum download speed of 2 Gbps.

The new Balong 5G01 can arrive at 2.3 Gbps, which is the highest speed ever reached by a mobile chipset. It offers two different bands for 5G: Sub6GHz and mmWave, which have a low and a high frequency, respectively. The new chipset by Huawei can support two 5G modes: non-standalone, which relies on LTE, and standalone which is totally independent of LTE. The 5G networks will make networks evolve in the most revolutionary ways in the coming years: it will be a much more important technology than its predecessors. Indeed, it will not only be used for normal connections, but it will improve the IoT sector.

This is why Huawei is planning to launch many products related to object-based connections. Among these, there will be car boxes for self-driving cars and many devices in the smart home sector. Huawei has partnered with many carriers to bring 5G network, which should be ready by the end of 2018. In the fourth quarter of 2019, Huawei, one of the companies who has invested the most into 5G networks, should launch the first 5G-enabled phone. Usually, that time frame corresponds to the launch of new flagships from the Mate series.

Do you think Huawei Mate 12 will be the first smartphone with the support to 5G connectivity and its blazing speeds?

It was filed on the website of the EU Intellectual Property Office, and according to the application it has been located in the category “Mobile phones; smartphones”. Now, there are two most reliable hypotheses: the first is that we are talking about an upcoming flagship phone, maybe a more advanced variant of the latest Huawei flagship: the Mate 10. A second hypothesis is that the patent has been filed just to protect the business from competitors which could choose this name for their products and release similar devices which could harm Huawei’s image.

A device with a similar name already exists among Huawei’s product lineup, but it is not a smartphone. We are referring to the Huawei Matebook X released last year: it is a Windows 10 laptop with an Intel Core i5 CPU, 8 GB of RAM, and an SSD with a 256 GB capacity in its base version. The existence of this device gives even more credit to the hypothesis that Huawei has trademarked the Mate X moniker only to defend itself from competitors. But on the other hand, it is also true that Apple released iPhone X last year, which is a special version for the 10th anniversary of iPhone, and Huawei may be planning to do something similar by releasing a variant of the Mate 10 identified by the letter X.

RELATED: Huawei P20 3D Renders Surfaces, Completes P-Series Trio Leaks

At this moment it is only possible to speculate about it as we do not have any official info if we exclude the moniker. Just to remind you, Huawei is going to hold an event at MWC 2018 in which it will showcase new laptops and smartphones. So, if Huawei Mate X really exists, we may know more about it at the most important trade show of the year related to mobile devices, which will take place starting from February 26.

While the new phones are pretty good when it comes to its looks and specs, they are nowhere near the flagship Huawei Mate series. We know for sure that we will see at least one new high-end model in the Mate series later this year and now, a leaked poster seems to reveal more details about the upcoming flagship, the Huawei Mate 9. Ideally, we should see the Huawei Mate S2 model before Mate 9’s release, but details about the former device are quite scarce at the moment.

The Huawei Mate 9, according to this new leaked poster, will come with dual 20MP cameras at the back. Now, this is something that we have been hearing quite a number of times in the past few months. A few months back, an analyst had said that the Mate 9 will feature dual 20MP sensors at the back, with Leica certification, and this poster seems to be backing that claim. Until now, Huawei has been using a monochrome + RGB sensor combination on its dual camera flagships and we can expect a similar setup on the upcoming handset. It should also feature OIS, according to another analyst who revealed this information recently.

RELATED: New Image of Huawei Mate 9 Dual Camera Setup. May Feature Kirin 960

Another important information revealed by this poster is that the phone will come with Kirin 960 chipset. This will be the new generation flagship chipset from Huawei’s Kirin range that should use the new Cortex A73 Artemis cores.

One thing to remember is that the Huawei Mate 9 poster that’s leaked today is quite basic. The dual camera setup arranged vertically is the only major design change that differentiates the device in the image and the Mate 8. Rest of the design, especially from the front looks identical to the Mate 8 flagship. Hence, it’s quite likely that this is a fan made poster and the details are based on the previously leaked information.

We can expect the Mate 9 sometime later this year, ideally around November- December period. So, there is still a couple of months left for the official launch.

Although Huawei P9 is quite a powerful smartphone, the true flagship series of the company has always been the Huawei Mate series. This year, the company is all set to update the lineup and like in 2015, we might see two devices launched in the second half — first, the Huawei Mate S2 and later, the Huawei Mate 9. If the company continues the tradition as last year, then Mate S2 should be a gentle upgrade to the Mate 8 flagship, while we expect some powerful hardware on the Mate 9 which should be announced near the end of the year.

Mate 8 with Messi’s signature

Now, an insider seems to have revealed some details about the upcoming Mate 9 handset on Weibo. He states that the Huawei Mate 9 should be using the Kirin 970 chipset. What’s more, he adds that the chip will be built on the highly efficient TSMC’s 10nm FinFET process. The source further states that Helio X30 is another chip that is going to use this ultra-efficient manufacturing node from this Taiwanese semiconductor foundry.

Now, we have been hearing rumors that the upcoming flagship was going to feature Kirin 960. In fact, we even have the possible specs of the 960 chip, unlike the Kirin 970 (about which we have hardly any info) mentioned by this insider. According to the previous information, the Kirin 960 chip is supposed to come with ARM Cortex A73 Artemis cores and Cortex A53 cores in big.LITTLE architecture with an upgraded GPU (possibly octa-core) and new LTE baseband including CDMA and Cat. 12 support. Moreover, this chip is said to be manufactured on TSMC’s 16nm process.

RELATED: Mate 9 Rumored to come with 20MP dual cameras at the back

Considering the new information (rumor) we have at hand, it’s possible that Huawei decides to use the Kirin 960 for some of its upper mid-range smartphones like the upcoming Mate S2 and Kirin 970 for Mate 9 and next year’s top-end flagships.

The Mate S2 is almost confirmed to meet us on September first week, while expect the Mate 9 to be released around November-December period this year.

IFA has always been an important event for Huawei since for the past few years, we have been meeting the new Mate series flagships at the event. The company announced the Mate 7 in September IFA 2014, and last year, we saw a new flagship, the Mate S at IFA 2015. So, this year, we can expect to see a brand new Mate smartphone at IFA 2016. However, considering that last year, the Mate S was announced at this event and the Mate 8 was released only a couple of months later, we wonder whether that will be the case this year as well.

Huawei could unveil the successor to the Mate S, and there are some things which support this possibility. An upgraded Mate S, which could be called as the Mate S2 may debut with Huawei’s new version of Force Touch which is said to come with more functions. But we also have to take into account that Huawei Mate S wasn’t really a big success for the company. So, it’s still doubtful whether this Chinese giant will update the lineup this year.

RELATED: Mate 9 Said To Come With Dual 20MP Cameras Certified By Leica

Another possibility is that, instead of waiting till the very end of 2016, Huawei could unleash its big guns, the Huawei Mate 9 at this event. This would be an ideal time for the launch, since then, the phone can take on the Galaxy Note 7 (another phablet flagship launching in Aug this year) and the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus which should be announced a few weeks later.

Anyway, it’s too early to speculate on the device that will meet us at the event. So, let’s wait for more details in the coming weeks.

The company had a special event for the unveiling in the capital city, Beijing earlier today.

The Kirin 950 chipset will come with four Cortex A72 cores clocked at 2.53GHz and four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. The A72 cores will make sure that the phone delivers super fast performance while the A53 cores will maintain efficiency of the chip. Unsurprisingly, the chip will be using the big.LITTLE architecture and will be built on the 16nm FinFET process from TSMC. There will be the Mali-T880MP4 GPU on board which Huawei claims is 100% better than Kirin 930’s GPU. Also, the chip will support Cat. 6 LTE networks ensuring download speeds of up to 300MBps.

Another interesting thing about the new Kirin 950 chip is the i5 co-processor on board. This is an always on processor which can work together with Cortex A72 and A53 cores for the best performance. The best part of the i5 co-processor is that its super efficient, using just 6.5mA, that’s 90% drop from the 90mA as compared to its previous generation i3 processor. This controls the various sensors on board the chip even when the phone is in sleep, which means you can expect tremendous improvement in the battery life, especially in the standby mode.

Also, like the previous Kirin 930 and 920 chipset, the new Kirin 950 comes with VoLTE which should enable better voice calls. Overall, it looks like the Kirin 950 a worthy upgrade to the existing Kirin 930.

In case, you are wondering about the benchmarks, the chip powering a device was kept in the presentation, and the phone scored about 83,000 on the AnTuTu benchmark. That’s better than existing chips like Exynos 7420.

Anyways, we expect the Kirin 950 powered Huawei Mate 8 to be announced on November 26, which is just a couple of weeks away. So, stay tuned for more details.

But sine the past couple of weeks, leaks about the Mate S have been pouring in like crazy. There have been multiple picture leaks and even GIC certification which confirmed the name a few days back. Now, the retailer OPPOMART has listed Huawei Mate S on its website revealing most of the specs of the device along with the pricing.

Huawei Mate S will reportedly feature a 5.7-inch full HD 1080p Force Touch Screen. It will really be an interesting feature as this tech allows users to define multiple gestures based on the force of touch on the screen. It opens up a lot of new possibilities which we would like to see explored on the Mate S. Huawei’s CEO Richard Yu has already hinted that the new flagship will have a powerful touch screen. So, its no surprise that OPPOMART lists Force Touch as one of its features.

Other specs include Kirin 935 octa-core processor, the same one that powers the Huawei P8 flagship, along with 3GB of RAM, 64GB of ROM and a rear placed 360 degrees fingerprint sensor. Huawei Ascent Mate 7 had one of the best fingerprint sensors of its time and we hope to see an improved version of the same on the Mate S. At the back, there’s a 20MP camera while up front, 8MP shooter. The listing also adds that the phone will support FDD-LTE networks and will come with a large 4100mAh battery. Remember ZUK Z1? Even it had such a large battery!

Overall, the specs look decent for a flagship. Of course, Kirin 935 isn’t considered as a top-end chip but its powerful enough to carry out your everyday tasks. As for the pricing, OPPOMART has listed the device for $599. This could be a slightly increased price tag, so expect the official price tag to be around $550-570.

So, what do you think about the Mate S? Would you be willing to pay $550 for a Huawei flagship with these specs?

We have already seen a video which shows us a Mate device (we are not yet sure its the Mate 8) with subtle design changes as compared to the Mate 7. Now, we have come across another video showing off a new Mate flagship in an all black body.

The video shows that the body will be extremely thin. It looks like the thickness is under 7mm. The back will be slightly rounded with a curved design, that should provide a comfortable grip. The camera placement is traditional, on the top at the back, along with the fingerprint sensor just below it.

What’s interesting is the port at the bottom. It doesn’t look like any of the USB ports that we have seen lately, not even the reversible USB Type-C. Could it be a new magnetic port? Possible, but we cannot be sure of that at the moment. Huawei had said that the new Mate flagship will bring an advanced technology that will surprise the world. Could it be this tech?

Another interesting part of the device is the unique white button at the side. It stands out from the body and looks like a special function key. Also, it doesn’t look like this device is made out of metal. Instead, Huawei seems to have used plastic or polycarbonate body on the device.

Anyways, now we have two different devices that claim to debut at IFA Berlin this year. Let’s see which one of them is finally launched by the company in September.

We are still unsure whether it will be the Huawei Mate 8 flagship or the Mate 7 Plus as rumored earlier, but earlier today, a new video was posted on YouTube which showed off the device in action.

While the video is of just 18 seconds, it was enough for a basic walk-through of the new design of the device. Apart from a few changes, the overall design seems to be the continuation from the Mate 7 flagship.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4NNQU35KZs

As for the specs, the Mate 8 is rumored to come with a 6-inch 2K display (490 ppi) along with Huawei’s latest Kirin 950 chipset. This new chip is expected to directly compete with the upcoming Snapdragon 820 processor from Qualcomm. Like tradition, Huawei is also said to offer two different versions of the Mate 8, one with 3GB RAM + 16GB of storage while the high-end model with 4GB RAM + 64GB of storage.

There will be a 20.7MP camera at the back, with a fingerprint scanner just below it. According to reviews, the fingerprint scanner on the Mate 7 was one of the best in the market at that time. So, it would be interesting to see if we find better tech on the new Mate 8. Up front, the phone is expected to come with an 8MP shooter, ideal for selfies. Finally, the battery is expected to be larger than the Mate 7. This would really be a great move since the current Mate flagship comes with a 4100mAh capacity battery and anything more than this should only increase the overall battery life of the phablet.

Unfortunately, the company hasn’t officially revealed anything about this upcoming Mate flagship. Also, the phone in the video may be a different device than the Mate 8. So, before making any more conclusions, lets wait for some concrete information about the upcoming flagship.

It is said that the Kirin 950 which is supposed to power the Mate 8 will only be released sometime in October. So, the company could announce a different smartphone at the September event, like an upgraded version of the Mate 7, probably called as the Mate 7 Plus or the Mate 7S.

In fact, we have already seen a couple of renders, which could be of the new smartphone. While we guessed that it could be the new Mate 8, but after considering this report and the striking resemblance to the Mate 7 flagship design, the leaked renders might be of the Mate 7 Plus. The phone is also said to come with surprising new high-end tech. But the report failed to specify any details.

Unfortunately, Huawei has not yet announced any details about its new Mate flagship. So, we will have to wait until we get some concrete information about the upcoming device.
