The company had apparently failed to keep its promise for planned investment in the region, prompting the end of iPhone 16 sales in the region. But now, Apple is willing to invest even more in Indonesia to reverse this decision. So let’s check it out.

Apple iPhone 16 Sales Ban: What was it all about?

The Cupertino based giant faced the sales restriction after failing to meet the $109 million investment that it had promised to provide in local infrastructure. Reports had indicated that Apple fell short of this amount by around $14 million. This paired with no new agreements and previous issues with the government’s mandate to source 40% local components led to the iPhone 16 sales ban.

So what now?

As of right now, Apple has already began work on an innovation development scheme by creating Apple Academies in the country. Furthermore, a new report claims (Via PhoneArena) that Apple has increased its offer to invest $100 million in Indonesia over the next two years. This is a sizeable investment, which is around 10 times higher than its previous proposal of $10 million for a factory in Bandung that would make accessories and components.

The Indonesian government has yet to respond to Apple’s new proposal officially. However, considering how the Ministry of Industry is looking for Apple to expand research and development for iPhones selling in the country, this new investment promise might end the ban of iPhone 16 sales. To recall, Indonesia had also blocked the sale of Google’s Pixel 9 series of smartphones as well for a similar reason. The company had failed to meet similar investments, but it remains to be seen if Google meets these requirements.

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is facing potential trouble in Indonesia once again. This time, the controversy centers around X’s recent policy change allowing adult content on the platform.

Indonesia’s Minister of Communications and Informatics, Budi Arie Setiadi, has threatened to shut down access to X if it doesn’t comply with the country’s 2008 Pornography Law. This law strictly prohibits the dissemination of pornographic material.

Earlier this month, X officially introduced a new policy permitting the posting of adult content, as long as users employ content warnings. The company’s stance emphasizes user autonomy, stating their belief that “adults should be able to engage with and create content reflecting their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality.” This includes “AI-generated, photographic or animated content such as cartoons, hentai, or anime.”

Minister Setiadi has issued a warning letter to X, outlining the potential consequences of non-compliance. The government plans to send further communications before making a final decision. Notably, X owner Elon Musk has reportedly not responded to these warnings. X itself has also not yet commented on the situation.

Indonesia has a well-documented history of cracking down on internet pornography. In 2014, the country banned Vimeo after accusing the platform of hosting videos containing nudity. Similar bans have been imposed on Tumblr, Reddit, and Imgur. Between 2016 and 2023 alone, Indonesia blocked nearly 2 million websites believed to contain pornographic material. X’s new policy has also drawn attention and potential challenges in Malaysia, another country with strict internet content regulations.

After multiple leaks and official teasers, the Redmi 12C finally makes its global debut. The device’s first international stop is in Indonesia as confirmed by the brand itself a few days back.

For the unaware, the Redmi 12C was announced in China in late December. It is a budget 4G smartphone with nothing much to brag about, except for its affordable price.

The Redmi 12C arrives in three memory configurations in Indonesia. These variants carry the following price tags.

• 4GB + 64GB – Rp 1,599,000 (~$105)

The phone can be availed in either Graphite Gray or Ocean Blue color options. It will be available for purchase starting tomorrow (March 10) across multiple channels in the country.

The handset is powered by a MediaTek Helio G85 SoC, which is paired with LPDDR4x RAM and eMMC 5.1 storage. It boots MIUI 13 based on Android 12 and is guaranteed to receive two two Android updates and three years of security updates.

iQOO 11 series smartphones launch event, which was set to take place on 2nd December, was postponed out of respect for Jiang Zemin, the former general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party. Along with iQOO, several other Chinese companies postponed their smartphone launch event.

The launch event for the iQOO 11 series has been rescheduled to 8th December, as confirmed by iQOO Indonesia. It’s not yet confirmed when the company plans to launch this smartphone in its home country China.

The iQOO 11 5G launch event, which the company has titled “Meet The Monster!” will take place on 8th December, i.e. tomorrow, at 4:00 PM local time, which is 1:00 AM PST and 2:30 PM IST.

The smartphone has already been listed on Vivo Thailand’s website, revealing some key specifications and features. The iQOO 11 5G features a 6.78-inch E6 P-OLED display that is confirmed to offer a Quad HD+ screen resolution of 1440 x 3200 pixels and supports a high refresh rate of 144Hz.

Under the hood, the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, coupled with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 internal storage. While there will be multiple models based on the memory configuration, one of the models listed online packs 16GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.

In the camera department, the phone features a triple-camera setup on the back that includes a 50-megapixel Samsung GN5 primary sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 13-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. On the front side, there’s a 16-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

HMD Global, the company behind Nokia-branded devices, recently announced two new entry-level smartphones in Indonesia, dubbed Nokia C21 Plus and Nokia C31. Along with those two smartphones, the company has also launched a new tablet.

While the Nokia T21 tablet was announced a couple of months back, it has now finally made its way to the Indonesian market. It comes in only one color — Gray and is priced at 3299000 Indonesian rupiah, which is about $210. The device is slated to go on sale in December.

The tablet comes with a tough aluminum body that has a 60 percent recycled plastic cover for the antenna. It features a 10.36-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 2000 x 1200 pixels, and 400 nits brightness.

Under the hood, the Nokia T21 is powered by the UNISOC T612 octa-core processor with Mali-G57 GPU. It is paired with 4GB LPDDR4 RAM while there are 64GB and 128GB storage options along with microSD card support of up to 512GB. However, the Indonesian version only comes with 64GB of internal storage.

Coming to photography, the device has an 8-megapixel autofocus rear camera with an LED flash. On the front side, there’s an 8-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling. The device is rated IP52 for dust and water resistance.

In the software department, the tablet runs the Android 12 operating system, and the company promises to deliver two years of Android upgrades and up to three years of monthly security updates. It is powered by an 8,200mAh battery and supports 18W fast charging.

The Indonesian smartphone market saw a modest 5 percent growth year on year in 2021. But while the rise was short, the region still managed to record its highest ever handset sales ever.

According to a Counterpoint Research report, the surge in phone shipments was likely due to a pent up demand during the first half of the year. During this time, the market saw a robust performance of mid range handsets and wider adoption of 5G also encouraged customers to upgrade their devices. Furthermore, this trend continued into the second half of 2021 as the Indonesian economy began recovering, as the government relaxed restrictions and lifted lockdowns as well. This triggered the demand for handsets.

Research Analyst Tanvi Sharma stated that “Brands like OPPO brought bundled offers and campaigns like Joy-Full, which provided benefits and after sales promos. There were also strategic partnerships between major OEMs and e-commerce players, like between vivo and JD.com. Had it not been for the component shortages during the second half, the growth would have been even higher. To meet the challenge, brands focused on their mid-tier portfolios and increased the selling price in some cases to pass on the increased cost to the end consumer.”

In 2021, OPPO lead the Indonesian market, with a sizeable market share of 22 percent. Its A series of smartphones helped boost its standing in the industry and fuel its growth. The Chinese brand also held a strong emphasis of sales through both offline and online channels. Meanwhile, Vivo managed to take the close second spot with a 21 percent while Xiaomi arrived third in the market with an 18.2 percent market share.

The Red Magic 6 series is set to launch in Indonesia next month. The company has just announced that its latest flagship lineup will be available in the region starting in July 2021.

Talking about the upcoming lineup, the Red Magic 6 and 6 Pro will sport a 6.8 inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution. The screen also offers a 165Hz high refresh rate as well along with a 500Hz single finger touch sampling rate and a 360Hz multi touch sampling rate. On the front, the display offers a 91.28 percent screen to body ratio and full DCI-P3 color gamut. Under the hood, the series is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset. This is paired with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.

Other notable features include the 300Hz Dual Pro Shoulder Triggers on both devices alongside the Game Boost Switch button and Game Space 3.01. Unfortunately, the company has yet to officially reveal the pricing of both smartphones as of right now. Although, it has been revealed both devices will arrive in a single configuration, namely 12GB of RAM paired with 128GB of storage for the base variant and 16GB of RAM + 256GB storage variant for the Pro version. The former will arrive in a single Elipse Black color, while the latter will be available in a Moon Silver color. The company will launch the devices through offline and online channels.

The Oppo A54 has just been launched in Indonesia. It is the company’s latest mid range smartphones from the A series in the region, which features Helio chip and 18W fast charging.

As per a TeknoKompas report, the Chinese tech giant launched the device as a successor to the A31 model that was launched in February 2021, instead of the A53 that was launched in August of 2020. This was stated by PR Manager Oppo Indonesia Aryo Meidianto, who said that “Oppo A53 is positioning more to replace Oppo A31. The specifications are almost the same, however, it has a number of significant improvements from its predecessor.”

One of these improvements is the punch hole 16 megapixel selfie shooter on the front, which is up from 8 megapixel on the A31. This camera also offers AI Beauty 2.0, which enhances selfie shots. Other changes include the fingerprint scanner that is now mounted at the side of the smartphone. Talking about the specifications, the device sports a 6.51 inch HD+ display on the front, while the rear houses a 13 megapixel triple camera module (2 MP macro sensor and a 2 MP bokeh lens).

Under the hood, the device features the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It is powered by a large 5,000mAh battery pack that supports up to 18W fast charging. Additional features include, IPX4 splash resistance and runs on the Android 10 operating system based ColorOS 7.2 custom skin. Realme has launched a couple of truly wireless earphones in the market and now the company seems to be gearing up to expand its portfolio of audio offerings by launching yet another TWS earphones — Realme Buds Q2.

As the name indicates, the upcoming earphones will be the successor to Realme Buds Q that was launched in India in June this year. However, the earphones were originally launched in China in May.

While the launch date for the upcoming Realme Buds Q2 is not yet known, but the fact that the device has been spotted on Indonesian telecom certification (via MySmartPrice) hints that the official launch should not be far away.

The listing has confirmed that the product is named Realme Buds Q2 and carries model number RMA2008. However, apart from that, the certification has not revealed anything else about the earphones.

According to a NikkeiAsia report, the memorandum is the first of its kind for the government. According to as source close to the matter, “With Huawei’s help, we expect to bring the level of our human resources up to international standards.” The Chinese telecommunications giant will also be collaborating with a government agency to push the development of artificial intelligence and 5G networking. Notably, Huawei’s contribution doesn’t end there as the company will also be providing technological cooperation to Indosat Ooredoo, which is the second largest telecom carrier in Indonesia, for the installation of 5G infrastructure in the country’s Jakarta capital region.

Another source close to Telekomunikasi Indonesia stated that “Huawei equipment are 20-30% less costly, and the quality is advancing,” when compared to equipment from Nokia and Ericsson. The company’s push in the region showcases its efforts for the Southeast Asian region. Huawei is also established a 5G research center in Thailand and is spending to support local startups and is already investing in the third data center in the country, which should be completed by next year.

This is one of the primary reasons why Apple is facing an anti-trust case against it. That said, a new change is on its way to the App Store for certain countries as a result of new taxes and foreign exchange rates.

The change we are talking about is the increase in prices of apps and games on the App Store as well as in-app purchases for the following countries.

• Brazil
• Colombia
• India
• Indonesia
• Russia
• South Africa

In India, price is being hiked due to the new equalization levy of 2%, in addition to the existing 18% GST (Goods & Services Tax). Whereas, in Indonesia, the changes are being made as a result of the new 10 % value-added tax for developers based outside of the country.

It is worth noting that the new changes will not affect auto-renewable subscriptions. Additionally, Apple also mentions that prices will be adjusted in Iceland and Albania as well. However, it is not sure if the final price will increase or decrease in these countries.

The new prices for apps and games on the Apple Apple store as well as in-app purchases will be rolled out in the coming days.

Vivo has beaten Samsung to become the top selling smartphone brand in Indonesia. This arrives amid the Coronavirus pandemic that has the consumer market lean towards budget handset offering, which is in favor of the Chinese vendor.

Chinese brands currently account for over 73.3 percent of total smartphone shipments within the country in the second quarter of 2020, as per a KrAsia report. Vivo led the market with a 21.2 percent market share, surpassing the usual market leader Samsung, which came in third with a 19.6 percent market share. This figure showcases a near tripling of Vivo’s 7.8 percent market share from back in Q2 2019.

Another Chinese brand, Oppo, came in second with a 20.6 percent market share, with Xiaomi and Realme coming in fourth and fifth respectively with 17.9 and 13.6 percent market shares. According to Counterpoint Research, Vivo’s success in the market is due to its successful aggressive pricing strategy within the entry to mid range segments. People are buying affordable handsets for various reasons, including work from home or distance learning during this time of crisis.

Furthermore, the crisis has also had an impact on the country’s economy. Thus, cheaper smartphones have become more popular, with the most devices being sold under IDR 2 million (roughly 136 US Dollars). Notably, smartphone sales in Indonesia have also declined by nearly 20 percent since last year with 50 percent of the online sales came from the country’s popular local e-commerce platform, Lazada.

OPPO A53 2020 quietly launches in Indonesia as the world’s first smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 460. It comes in a single 4GB + 64GB storage configuration priced at Rp 2,499,000 ($169). The handset is available in two colors namely Electric Black and Fancy Blue.

The new budget smartphone from OPPO flaunts a 6.5-inch HD+ (1600 x 720 pixels) LCD panel with 90Hz refresh rate, 20:9 aspect ratio, and a single punch-hole at the top left corner housing a 16MP selfie camera.

The rear of the phone is made of shiny polycarbonate to mimic glass build. There’s a 12MP (wide) + 2MP (macro) + 2MP (depth) triple camera setup, a fingerprint sensor, and OPPO branding on this back panel.

Other features of this handset include microSD card slot to expand storage up to 256GB, 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C, ColorOS 7.2 based on Android 10, 5,000mAh battery, and 18W fast charging support.

The phone is up for pre-orders in Indonesia starting today until August 26. It should make its way to other markets like India in the coming days.

The other upcoming Snapdragon 460 devices are vivo Y20, Motorola Moto E7 Plus, and Nokia 3.4. None of them has a launch date yet.

Realme C series of smartphones are the brand’s most affordable handsets. The company is restructuring this series by offering phones at every price point rather than one model for a quarter or two. After unveiling Realme C11 in June, the firm debuted Realme C15 in July. Now, it launches Realme C12  bridging the price gap between the first two phones.

The newly announced Realme C12 shares the design and some of the specs with the handsets launched prior to it under this series. It is powered by the same MediaTek Helio G35 and comes only in a single configuration with 3GB RAM and 32GB ROM. Anyway, if needed, users can expand storage via microSD card.

On the front, the device sports a 6.5-inch HD+ IPS LCD panel with 20:9 aspect ratio and a dew-drop notch housing a 5MP selfie camera. Further, the polycarbonate back of the phone features a geometric pattern, a fingerprint sensor, and a triple camera setup consisting of a 13MP primary shooter, a 2MP monochrome sensor, and a 2MP macro snapper.

Other features of this smartphone include a massive 6,000 mAh battery, 10W charging, reverse charging, MicroUSB port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Realme UI based on Android 10.

The Realme C12 comes in two colors namely Coral Red and Marine Blue. It is priced at IDR 1,899,000 in Indonesia and will go on sale for the first time on August 16 for a special discount price tag of IDR 1,749,000.

Realme entered the South East Asian markets in the last quarter of 2018. Since then, the brand has been growing in those regions steadily. The latest report by Counterpoint Research for Q1 2020 reveals an astonishing growth rate for the company. Realme is currently the fastest growing brand in South East Asia region with 173% YoY growth.

Realme initially debuted in India as a sub-brand of Oppo in early 2018. In the last quarter of the same year, the brand entered Sout East Asian countries like Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Within a quarter in Q1 2019, Realme entered the top 10 brands in the above-mentioned countries except for the Philippines. In the same quarter, the brand debuted in Myanmar and also entered the top 10 brands at the same time.

Then, in Q2 2019. Realme became one of the top 5 brands in Vietnam and Indonesia, followed by top 10 in the Philippines in the third quarter of 2019.

Later in Q4 2019, the brand entered the top 5 in  Phillippines, Myanmar and even Cambodia where it made its entrance for the first time. Lastly, it took Realme more than a year to step into the top 5 brands in Thailand, compared to other nations.

The global smartphone market declined by 13% in Q1 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic. The South-East Asian smartphone market also witnessed an 11% decline in the same period.

However, Realme was the fastest growing brand globally as well as in Sout East Asia with 157% and 173% YoY growths respectively in the first quarter of 2020.

Indonesia is a highly competitive market for smartphones right now. Thanks to the popularity of e-commerce sites like JD and Lazada, companies have been able to expand their reach throughout the country. This has led to Chinese brands growing rapidly, outpacing local companies and quickly closing in on Samsung‘s number 1 spot.

According to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service, Indonesia’s smartphone shipments grew 7% annually during in Q3 2019. Research Analyst Parv Sharma says “Chinese brands hold four out of the top five positions with 65% market share by volume. This is the highest ever share by Chinese brands in Indonesia, pushing local brands to mere single digit share.”

They continue, “in terms of brands, Xiaomi is maintaining the second position in the market and is reducing the gap to Samsung’s first position. Xiaomi has locally produced 10 million smartphones with a focus on both the online and offline channels. It has invested in creating 40 authorized Mi stores. Indonesia is one of the key markets responsible for Xiaomi’s global growth.”

Adding further Sharma said, “Realme has also shown impressive growth since its launch. Aggressive online channel marketing with competitive product pricing and features is the key reason for its success.” It’s really quite the impressive feat, especially considering that Realme had no presence within the country until recently.

Whether one of these companies will manage to dethrone Samsung remains to be seen, but it’s not unlikely. Indonesia, like many other South East Asian countries, places a big emphasis on high value devices. We’ll have to wait for Q4 2019 to find out.

Vivo has launched the Vivo S1 and S1 Pro smartphones in its home country China earlier this year. Now, it is being reported that the company is gearing up to launch the Vivo S1 in the Indian market, which could happen soon.

Now, ahead of the phone’s launch in the Indian market, the Vivo S1 has been launched in Indonesia. The phone is now available for pre-order in Indonesia and is priced at 3599000 Indonesian Rupiah, which roughly converts to $258. It comes in two color options — Cosmic Green and Skyline Blue and will start shipping from 23rd July.

The specifications of the device are a bit different from the specs of the Vivo S1 launched in China in March this year. It comes with a 6.39-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display with 2340 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and about 90% screen-to-body ratio. It also comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication.

Under the hood, the device is powered by the latest MediaTek Helio P65 12nm octa-core SoC. The handset packs 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. There’s also a microSD card slot, which enables users to further expand the phone’s storage capacity up to 256GB.

Coming to the camera department, it features a 16-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.78 aperture and an 8-megapixel ultrawide secondary sensor. There’s also a 2-megapixel tertiary camera sensor for depth sensing. On the front side, the device comes equipped with a 32-megapixel snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

As for the connectivity options, the device comes with support for Dual 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac dual-band, Bluetooth 5, GPS/GLONASS, and a micro USB port. The device runs Android 9 Pie operating system with the company’s own FunTouch OS on top and is powered by a 4,500mAh battery with support for fast charging.

As the trade war between the U.S. and China worsens, and sanctions against Huawei get thrown into the mix, Apple and its supplier Pegatron are beginning to hedge their bets by relocating more of the company’s supply chain to places outside of China. A local report by Digitimes suggests that Indonesia has been chosen over Vietnam thanks to a better worker supply.

It seems like Pegatron is all prepared for assembling MacBooks and iPads in Batam, Indonesia, with production slated to start next month. The work will be subcontracted by Pegatron to PT Sat Nusapersada, a local manufacturer in Batam, and although the company’s CEO stopped short of naming the clients it would be working for, there’s a high chance Apple is in that list.

Pegatron is investing $300 million in Indonesian factories to achieve this, and they seem quite confident. PT Sat Nusapersada’s CEO claims that Indonesian productivity is superior to China’s, with a comparatively small 2% turnover rate. Apple’s contract manufacturers have indeed experienced volatility in their labor forces, though these have been attributed as much to wage and quality of life issues as major swings in product demand.

Pegatron is not the only key Apple supplier looking to assemble products outside China: Foxconn has confirmed its own plans to begin mass-production of iPhones in India later this year. Given the massive escalation in that war by the Trump administration earlier this month, this move only makes sense in the grand scheme of things. The escalations are hard on everyone, and we hope to see some form of resolution soon.

He revealed that Xiaomi now has a presence in 82 overseas markets, which is not a small feat considering that the company began its plan for the global presence in the year 2014, four years after Xiaomi was founded in China.

As of the second quarter of 2018, Xiaomi’s international business grew by 150 percent and has successfully entered 82 foreign markets. Among the 82 markets the company is present it, the brand ranks among the top five in about 25 markets.

Lei Jun further added that the aim to Xiaomi is to bring high-quality products to local consumers with good pricing. The company is also investing to train local teams and manufacture products locally. For instance, 95 percent of Xiaomi’s products in Indonesia are manufactured locally. In India, the company has already established local manufacturing units and has also started investing in startups to develop the overall mobile internet industry.

Once again, Xiaomi beat its rival Samsung to be the leading smartphone brand with most shipments in the Indian market in the third quarter of this year, as per the report from Counterpoint Research. Xiaomi’s overall market share during Q3 2018 comes at 27 percent while Samsung managed to grab 23 percent on market share.

In Indonesia, Xiaomi became the second largest brand for the first time and is leading the sub-$150 segments. It holds 22 percent market share in Indonesia while the leading brand Samsung holds 25 percent market share.

The company continues to expand globally and with gains in the market share in various countries, Xiaomi’s global shipment numbers are also growing. The company reportedly shipped 9.7 percent of all smartphones shipped worldwide during third-quarter this year. Globally, Xiaomi ranks fourth in terms of smartphone shipments having shipped over 34.3 million units in Q3 2018, just behind Samsung, Huawei, and Apple.

Apart from India and Indonesia, the company is also making headway into European markets like Spain where it continues to cause disruption. Xiaomi is now all set to enter the UK later this week and plans to open its store in London on 10th November.

Not long after it received FCC approval, the OPPO R1001 was quietly released in Indonesia for Rp7000 (about 700 RMB or $111.95) and is considered to be OPPO’s cheapest smart phone to date.  

As a phone targeted towards the low-end market, there is not much to say about the OPPO Joy’s appearance. Its design is more common among OPPO’s entry-level products. Its measurements are 124 x 63 x 9.9mm and it is available in black and white.

It uses MTK’s MT6572/M dual-core processor with a main frequency of 1.2GHz, has 512Mb RAM and 4Gb ROM. It also has a 300,000 pixel front camera and 3mP rear camera, a 4 inch WVGA resolution screen, and a 1700mA battery. It can also support the WCDMA+GSM dual-SIM card and its operating system is based on the Android 4.2.

After entering the Southeast Asian market, the OPPO Joy may break into the Chinese market.
