Apple announced iOS 17 at WWDC last year. The rollout of the latest operating system for iPhones across the world started last October. The software version comes with a host of new features and changes. Now, on Apple’s Developer website, the company has revealed the adoption statistics of the iOS 17 OS on all eligible devices. It is happening slower than the iOS 16. 

iOS 17 adoption is slower than iOS 16

The statistics data released by Apple is measured by devices that transacted on the App Store until February 4, 2024. It was first spotted by MacRumors. This is also the first time Apple has provided installation numbers of iOS 17. 

As per the data, 76 percent of iPhones released in the last four years run on iOS 17. 20 percent of the same devices are still on iOS 16 while the remaining four percent are on an even earlier operating system. Meanwhile of all active iPhones eligible for iOS 17, only 66 percent are running the latest version. 23 and 11 percent of iPhones are on iOS 16 and older respectively. 

The data suggests that iOS 17 is lagging behind iOS 16 in terms of adoption. Around this time last year, 81 percent of all iPhones in the last four years were running on iOS 16. Apple has released three major updates to the iOS 17 so far with another one expected to arrive in March. 

Alongside iOS 17, Apple has also shared data on the iPadOS 17’s adoption progress. 61 percent of iPads introduced in the last four years have the latest software version installed.   29 percent are still running iPadOS 16 while the rest 10 percent have an older version.

Based on this, it seems likely that the problem isn’t widespread.

Users who haven’t installed the iOS 17.2.1 update should proceed with caution as issues might occur with these updates. Apple is likely to address these problems by rolling out the 17.2.2 or 17.3 update soon. If you’re facing issues, a temporary fix can be found by enrolling in the iOS 17.3 public beta program. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have been criticized for their poor thermal management and throttling under sustained load. But a new software update from Apple seems to have fixed these issues. 

Apple released the iOS 17.0.3 update for new iPhones earlier this week. After testing the iPhone 15 Pro Max with this new iOS version, Chinese reviewer “Ah Zheng Is Very Hard” found that the phone’s performance and thermals have improved significantly.

For instance, the GPU score on Geekbench 6 increased from 27,163 on iOS 17.0.2 to 27,381 on iOS 17.0.3, while CPU scores largely remained the same. This may not seem like a big difference, but gaming performance has definitely improved.

Playing Honor of Kings on the iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 17.0.3 resulted in an average frame rate of 116.9 frames per second (FPS), while the same game yielded 105.4 FPS on iOS 17.0.2. Last year’s iPhone 14 Pro Max averages 103 FPS on iOS 17.0.3, for comparison.

Likewise, the phone’s temperature while playing the game also dropped around 1°C on the back and 0.6°C on the front. Other games, such as Genshin Impact and NiShuiHan, also ran cooler after the update, with temperature differences of over 2°C. However, the reviewer didn’t share the frame rate numbers for these two games.

Apple’s iOS 17.0.3 update seems to have improved the thermal management and performance of the iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, we certainly recommend updating to iOS 17.0.3 to enjoy the improved performance.

Apart from just addressing the heating problem, Apple also fixed a bug that surfaced last month with the new update. In a statement to MacRumors, Apple has clarified that it was third-party apps that led to the smartphone heating up and the titanium build isn’t a factor. The iPhone maker also added that the A17 Pro chipset does not require any tweaks either.

While Apple‘s Notes app on the new iOS 17 remains a handy tool for jotting down quick thoughts and creating lists, it’s not currently meeting the needs of global users who use right-to-left scripts like Hebrew or Arabic. Reports are piling up about its unstable cursor movement when used for these scripts, leaving users frustrated.

AppleInsider highlighted the issue, and Apple Support’s forums are brimming with similar complaints. Users state that the cursor doesn’t align with the text when typing from right to left, making editing almost impossible. Simply put, if you need to insert a word in an existing sentence, the app throws it to the beginning of the line. And forget about backspacing; it’s as if the cursor believes it’s at the right end of the sentence.

What makes this a global issue is that it essentially disregards a portion of the world’s population. Apple is an international brand, and its products are used worldwide. Given that right-to-left languages like Hebrew and Arabic are spoken by millions, it’s a glaring oversight that impacts Apple’s global reputation. In FaceTime, if someone misses your call, you can now leave video or audio messages. There are also new 3D effects to make your video calls more engaging. When your iPhone is charging on its side, a new StandBy feature displays important info like the time and widgets, customized to where your phone is placed.

The update also introduces more interactive widgets for iPhone and Mac, along with an improved AirDrop feature called NameDrop for easier contact sharing. The keyboard is smarter, with better autocorrect and text prediction, and Safari lets you set up profiles to separate your work and personal browsing. You can also share passwords safely through its enhanced privacy settings.

Apple Music adds a SharePlay feature for shared listening experiences and a crossfade feature for smoother transitions between songs. Apple is gearing up for the Wonderlust event on September 12 where it will unveil the next generation iPhones, Watch Series, and more.  With less than two weeks to go, highly reliable reporter Mark Gurman has shared some new information on the next version of software for iPhones and iPads in his weekly Power On newsletter. The Cupertino-based tech giant announced the iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 at its annual WWDC in June this year. 

Apple to release next upcoming software versions for iPhones and iPads simultaneously

The newer versions of Apple’s operating system for iPhones and iPads are usually rolled out in a staggered manner. They are often released to the public at the company’s annual fall event. Before this, the newly announced version of the softwares undergo extensive beta testing. 

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has learned from sources within Apple that the company is considering the eighth betas of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 to be the final version. The eighth beta version of both OS were released to developers and public beta testers last week. The Cupertino-based tech giant plans to release both new software versions for the iPhone and iPad simultaneously. 

Last year, iOS 16 was released alone for iPhones on September 12. However, the iPadOS 16 arrived on October 24 nearly a month after the iOS 16. This was because of the issues related to the Stage Manager The upcoming iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are expected to arrive shortly after the iPhone 15 launch announcement on September 12. 

For those unaware, the iOS 17 now features Standby mode, new AirDrop capabilities, interactive widgets, journal app, and other upgrades. The iPadOS 17 will come with a customized lock screen, Safari profiles, Health app, and more.

The new haptic feedback patterns make the iPhone vibrate more prominently when the user switches between silent and normal modes. This is especially useful for new phones with an Action Button, as it makes it easier to know which mode the phone is in.

More importantly, these patterns are triggered not only when the user activates the silent mode but also when it’s deactivated. In the earlier iOS version, there was only a brief haptic feedback when the iPhone was set to silent mode, but no feedback when it was taken off silent mode.

Interestingly, the 9to5Mac team was also able to replicate the haptic feedback for disabling silent mode, even though it’s not yet functional on existing iPhone models. They say it feels like a “single firm tap.”

Moreover, according to MacRumors, the new button that replaces the mute switch can also be assigned to a variety of actions, such as enabling or disabling Silent Mode, opening the Camera app, turning on the flashlight, triggering a Focus Mode, or recording a Voice Memo. Users can also create their own Siri Shortcuts to assign to the button.

It is also possible that there will be a new button in the Control Center for Silent Mode on the new iPhones. Additionally, Apple may add an indicator in the Status Bar to show when the phone is silenced.

Apple will reportedly add a new feature that will allow users to reset their iPhone’s new passcode with the previous passcode within 72 hours of the change. In simple terms, if a user changes their phone’s passcode but forgets the new one, they still have 72 hours to go back to the old passcode. However, it’s worth noting that users must remember the old passcode before creating another new one. 

With the new feature, whenever a user enters an incorrect passcode, they will have the option to reset it. They will see a ‘Forgot Passcode’ option at the bottom of the screen that will lead to a new page called the ‘Try Passcode Reset” option. Tapping on this option users will be able to enter their old passcode and also create a new one. 

The passcode reset feature on iOS 17 seems like a savior. However, it will only work if users forget their new password in the first 72 hours after the change. For security purposes, there is also an option to disable the feature by tapping on the ‘Expire Previous Password Now’ in the Face ID and Passcode settings. 

Apple disables iPhone after failed repeated attempts to unlock the device. It is then extended to a permanent lock until the iPhone is put in recovery mode. Recovery mode is for safeguarding devices from getting into the wrong hands. It allows users to erase their iPhones and set it up again.

Susan Prescott, Vice President of Global Developer Relations at Apple, shared her thoughts about the WWDC event:

“WWDC is one of our favorite times of the year at Apple because it’s an opportunity to connect with talented developers from around the world who make this community so extraordinary, both online and in person. WWDC23 will be our biggest and most exciting conference yet, and we can’t wait to see many of you online and in person at this very special event!”

In addition to the announcements shared in the Keynote and State of the Union presentations, this year’s online program will also offer one-on-one lab sessions. Participants and students will have the opportunity to interact with Apple engineers and other developers, as well as attend a special day at Apple Park on June 5th to watch the Keynote and State of the Union events with the global online community.

WWDC23 also supports the Swift Student Challenge, one of many Apple programs aimed at advancing the skills of developers and students of all ages who love coding. With the help of Swift Playgrounds, which makes learning the Swift programming language fun and interactive, students can gain expertise in developing applications on any topic they choose. The event will culminate in a competition, and students can submit their work from now until April 19th for consideration.

Apple has been working on its next iteration of iOS for sometime now. The new iOS 17 is set to launch later this year and will reportedly come with some highly anticipated features that many have been looking forward to. So here are all the details.

The news arrives from the latest Power On newsletter from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Based on what we know so far, the Cupertino based giant is gearing up to launch the new major software version for its smartphones in June 2023. Previously, it was believed that the iOS 17 update would arrive with incremental changes over the last generation software. But it appears that the iPhone maker has changed its strategy in late development stages.

So now, rather than focusing on simply performance improvements and fixing other issues, it will now launch with a bunch of new features. With the new update, Apple is expected to offer improvements alongside new features such as an updated CarPlay experience, upgrades to Siri, support for sideloading apps and alternate app stores, along with mixed reality headset support, among other things.

In other words, it is clear that the brand will not be launching a simple update this year. We can expect the iOS 17 announcement to arrive sometime in June during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2023) event.
