The gaming smartphones have become a popular category of phones and more and more device makers are jumping in. Now, it seems that the China-based smartphone maker Meizu is also planning to soon launch a gaming smartphone.

The company has renamed its “Meizu Neighbourhood Committee” on Weibo to “Meizu Gaming” which indicates that the company could soon launch a gaming smartphone. Some are speculating that it could mean that Meizu is forming a new e-sports team.

A post on the official Weibo account reveals that Meizu Gaming, in partnership with King of Glory game, is inviting gamers to make a strong team to represent Meizu in a gaming competition. It adds that winners will get five Meizu 17 smartphones along with few more prizes for the participants.

Meizu planning to make a gaming smartphone makes sense given that the company’s co-founder had talked about it last year. Also, with gaming smartphones getting more and more popular for powerful hardware, most manufacturers are expected to join the race to make the most powerful gaming smartphone.

At this time, there’s nothing known about the Meizu Gaming Smartphone but given the new Weibo update, we expect the company to reveal more details about the same in the coming days or weeks.

Currently, Meizu 17 and 17 Pro are the flagship smartphones from the company for this year, available in its home market. It has been releasing new software updates at regular intervals with new features and functionalities.

The company had previously teased that it could launch a smartwatch in Q4 2020 and now it seems that the company is finally ready to do so. It has trademarked the names “Meizu Watch” and “Flyme For Watch” for its upcoming wearable device.

Last year, Tencent started implementing a policy which saw 12-year-olds and under getting only one hour per day of gameplay time, restricted to before 9 pm. Older kids are only be allowed to play for two hours a day. The identification process is powered by real name verification using China’s public security database. The company has announced that it has completed the nationwide rollout of the real name verification of one of its most popular game Honour of Kings which is also known as Arena of Valor.

According to a message on WeChat, the rollout was completed 12 days earlier than scheduled. The company also revealed that with the full implementation of this safety check, the playtime of players aged 12 years or younger fell by 46% and the playtime of older teens above 12 years old dropped 24%. The company commenced the implementation of real-name registration on Honour of Kings two months back as part of efforts to curb China’s growing game addiction, especially among teens and kids.

China has been grappling with a monumental rise in cases of gaming addiction especially among teenagers in the country with an estimated 24 million kids affected. The government also blames the country’s widespread myopia on the playing of video games. As a result, several measures are being taken to stem the tide. One of such measures is what Tencent is the real-name recognition. Another measure which is still being worked on is facial recognition. The company has started the second round of testing of facial recognition-aided ID checks. It said it would soon expand the scale of testing as well as implementation, meaning that more users will be requested to verify their identities through facial recognition.

In case you don’t know, Tencent Holdings is the world’s top-grossing games publisher. Its most popular game is King of Glory, with over 50m daily players in China. The game has even been heavily linked to the epidemic rise of video game addiction in the country.  Earlier this month, Tencent disclosed that there are plans to roll out the real-name verification system to its entire game line-up by 2019. All these measures have had a negative impact on the company’s revenue and even that of the industry.

Vulkan is Qualcomm‘s latest 3D graphics API. It was released as a successor to OpenGL. The new API is present in Adreno 5xx and Adreno 6xx GPUs and brings high-performance graphics to mobiles.

One of the advantages of the Vulkan API is that it is multi-threading friendly, unlike OpenGL. It does this by “providing a buffer system that can leverage all CPU cores to submit tasks to the GPU and perform memory operations”. The Vulkan API also makes cross-platform development between PC, consoles and mobile devices easier.

It turns out that Qualcomm has been working with game developers to optimize their games to take advantage of the new API. The result of one of the partnerships is an optimized version of the popular mobile game, King of Glory.

The use of facial recognition technology to gain access will be tested first on Tencent’s blockbuster mobile game titled, Honour of Kings. Already, some 1,000 new users in Beijing and Shenzhen have been selected to verify their identities through camera checks, according to a recent statement by the company. The facial recognition will verify the identities of Honour of Kings players by cross-referencing with public security databases. The company said it was the first time such data has been used by the gaming industry to screen users. There is no indication when the feature will roll out fully for Honour of Kings, which has 200 million users, or if and when the system will expand to cover other Tencent titles.

If you do not reside in China, you most likely are not familiar with the mobile game called King of Glory. It is nothing to be ashamed of. Made by Tencent games, King of Glory belongs to the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) genre. It is very similar to League of Legends, another MOBA game made by Tencent but which is more popular in the West.

Come Friday, the 19th of May, Apple will be releasing a King of Glory Special Edition iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The back of the phones will be engraved with the King of Glory logo and characters from the game. The phones will also have matching live wallpapers and customized retail boxes.

The Xiaomi Mi 2S was released in April 2013 and has gone on to garner lots of positive reviews for its strong, rugged build and sturdy specs line up. The Mi 2S launched running MIUI 5 but has gotten updates to subsequent MIUI whenever they are launched. Apparently, Xiaomi has been consistent with the upgrades and even pushed the latest MIUI 8.2 version to the device and the result has been cool.

The Mi 2S came with 2GB of RAM onboard as well as two storage versions with 16GB and 32GB of storage but the device still is able to take the upgrade to MIUI 8.2 as revealed in a new video shared on Weibo. The upgrade took a chunk out of the available 2GB RAM space, leaving 1GB of RAM space for apps. The performance of the smartphone is still appreciable, with the phone able to have the popular Tencent mobile game King of Glory up and running smoothly.

 Aside from running smoothly, the stages could be selected smoothly, the display is capable of a frame rate of 30 fps but that fell to around16 and 17 fps (frames per seconds) but that doesn’t affect the operation at all. The Mi 2S doesn’t come with a memory slot so the games and apps you can have installed inside are sure limited but with a capable hardware marshaled by a Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, the phone is capable of handling any app thrown at it and this may include the upcoming MIUI 9. But for now, Mi 2S users get to enjoy the new features offered by MIUI 8.2, more like new wine in an old bottle, same sweet taste.
