It did not have a charging port, speaker grille, SIM tray, and even physical buttons. Meizu settled for alternatives such as wireless charging, sound-on-display technology for audio, an eSIM, and virtual buttons that provided haptic feedback via a linear motor. The device was listed on Indiegogo for crowdfunding but failed to meet its $100,000 goal.

Today, Meizu has announced that the Meizu Zero was the recipient of iF’s 2020 Gold Award. The 2020 iF Design Awards had a total of 7298 finalists from 56 different countries. The Meizu Zero and the Google Pixel 4 were the only two mobile phones that received a Gold Award of the 46 mobile phones that were given an award for design.

The Meizu Zero will never be mass-produced but Meizu will adopt some of its features for its future devices. Last year, it was reported that the Meizu 17 will be based on the Meizu Zero.

The Meizu Zero launched with a 5.99-inch OLED display and a ceramic unibody. It had a Snapdragon 845 processor but there were no details about the RAM and storage. It supported 18W wireless fast charge, had an IP68 rating and could survive immersion in water for 2 hours and 30 minutes. It also had dual rear cameras (12MP + 20MP) and a 20MP selfie camera.

The crowdfunding exercise on Indiegogo proved us wrong with the phone getting a disappointing 29 backers who raised a paltry $45,998. At the same time, Vivo also announced the holeless Vivo APEX 2019.

While enthusiasm isn’t too high on the prospect of the design style, some phone enthusiasts in China have been asking questions as to when the design style will become commercial. China Mobile has perhaps received several questions as to the when hole-less phones will meet with consumers. China Mobile Terminal Lab gave several reasons from the technical perspective, why hole-less phones are ready to hit the market sooner than later.

Buttons: Most phone already makes use of virtual buttons and even on some curved screen phones, the volume buttons are almost completely invisible on some curved screen phones. Since phones utilise touchscreens, a transformation to entirely virtual button design is now more realistic.

EDITOR’S PICK: First Samples from the 108MP Mi Mix Alpha is here & we are not impressed!

Four holes for sound: Smartphones rely heavily on four major openings for sound input and output – 3.5mm audio jack opening, noise reduction hole, earpiece and speaker. The emergence of Bluetooth headset has taken care of the need for a 3.5mm audio jack opening on phones and most new models don’t have one even though some audiophiles prefer the good old audio jack. The other three openings are still frequent residents of mobile phones but in recent times, bone conduction technology and under-screen sound technology and others in the works have brought the prospects of eliminating these openings.

Card slot: Virtual cards such as eSIM are now in use. Even though they are yet to be deployed very well in smartphones, they are fitting replacement for the physical SIM slot opening

China Mobile notes that charging distance is still the only thing yet to be overcome. It noted that even though there is wireless fast charging technology, there is still no solution to increasing the charging distance such that you don’t need to put the phone in contact with the charging pad or cradle to charge it. Some find the inability to use their mobile phones while charging inconveniencing. We expect Over-the-air wireless charging that can deliver small amounts of power at a distance from inches to 3 feet to become available in smartphones soon.

An image shared online from a 5G event reveals key details about Meizu’s next flagship.

The image shows Meizu’s stand at the event which has the Meizu 16s on display, but there is also an “artwork” on the wall that reads “Meet the new 5G era, Meizu 17 is coming”.

This is the first “official” confirmation of the name of Meizu’s next flagship. It is also proof that the device will support 5G. Meizu already said at the beginning of the year it wasn’t jumping on the 5G train. Now, we know it will do so next year.

There are reports that the Meizu 17 will be based on the Meizu Zero hole-less phone which launched this year. The phone failed to reach its crowdfunding goal so it didn’t make it out of concept but that doesn’t mean Meizu has abandoned the design. It may modify the design and use it for the Meizu 17 next year.

The Meizu Zero doesn’t have holes (save for the microphones) and buttons. It charges wirelessly, uses mSound 2.0 screen sound technology to pump out sound via the display, and has an eSIM.

Later, the company kicked-off plans to commercialize the smartphone and started crowdfunding on Indiegogo.

However, as we reported yesterday, the company failed to raise the amount of $100,000 in the specified time limit. Since the company chose the fixed goal route for the crowdfunding, the campaign only receives funding when the goal is reached within the deadline.

Now, Meizu CEO Huang Zhang responded on the company’s official forum to the news about the company’s failure of crowdfunding Meizu Zero smartphone. He shifted the blame to the company’s marketing department and said that the phone was only a pre-research project. Below is his statement.

This crowdfunding is carried out by the marketing department. The non-porous mobile phone is only a pre-research project of the development department. We never intended to mass-produce this project.

Many users have pointed out that the response of Huang Zhang lacks sincerity and is somewhat shameful and unfriendly to those who had decided to back the project.

As per the reports, the phone was considered in March 2018 and took almost a year to go to crowdfunding. The company had dubbed the smartphone as “Exclusive Engineer Unit”, priced at $1,299, and was said to be handmade by Meizu’s engineers.

There was also another version tagged “Exclusive Pioneering Unit” and with a $2,999 price tag but that version is sold out as just a single unit was available. The smartphone was to be offered in Black and White color options.

The Meizu Zero had a 5.99-inch curved OLED panel with full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels and was equipped with mSound 2.0 technology, making it possible for the smartphone to emit sound from the screen which eliminates the need for the earpiece and external speaker.

The screen of the smartphone is also embedded with an in-display fingerprint sensor and the device also comes with an IP68 certified for dustproof and waterproof to keep it completely sealed and there’s no opening on the device.

Since there’s no holes and buttons, the smartphone was equipped with linear motor-powered pressure-sensitive virtual buttons for power ON/OFF and volume up/down functions. The rear panel of the smartphone is made up of ceramic. Since there was no SIM card slot on the device, it carried support for eSIM.

The announcement of such an innovative smartphone commanded quite a lot of attention. That may have been the recipe the phone maker needed to put the device up for sale on Indiegogo crowdfunding. Meizu, no doubt, intended to test the waters with the crowdfunding campaign but the result isn’t definitely what was expected.

Just so you’ll know, the Meizu Zero Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign has ended and there is no better word to describe it than disappointing! The device had a price tag of $1299 and there is even a variant dubbed “Exclusive Pioneering Unit” with a $2999 price tag. The company was scouting for just 100 backers who would raise $100,000 USD. That didn’t happen as the company was only able to raise $45,998 from 29 backers before the campaign closed.

Read Also: Meizu Zero now available on Indiegogo crowdfunding for $1299

We can’t really pinpoint why the crowdfunding recorded an unsatisfactory response but it may not be unconnected with the crazy price tag which Meizu slammed on the device. At that price, Apple’s latest iPhones are within reach, as well as Samsung Galaxy models. Apart from that, who even wants a “holeless phone”? As much as the design is awesome, the unsatisfactory level of interest may be a pointer to the fact that users are not only bothered about design but also performance. We are having a hard time grappling with the removal of 3.5mm audio jack from some flagship models and then Meizu’s holeless phone comes to complicate things. Apart from not being able to use the 3.5mm jack, you won’t even find a Type-C port as the device can only be charged wirelessly. You’ll also need a wireless headset if you need to use a headset. Meizu’s low-ranking reputation may have also played a role. Nevertheless, we believe price played a bigger role in the crowdfunding.

Now, after around 15 days, Meizu Zero — the world’s first holeless smartphone — has managed to secure about 34 percent of its goal of raising $100,000. The company now has 16 days left to secure the rest of the amount to turn this concept phone into a reality.

If the company fails to raise the amount of $100,000 in the specified time limit, none of the company will go to the Chinese company and the existing 30 backers will get the refund. This is because the company chose the fixed goal route in which the campaign only receives funding when the goal is reached within the deadline.

In terms of specifications, the Meizu Zero features a 5.99-inch curved OLED panel with full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. It is equipped with mSound 2.0 technology which makes it possible for the smartphone to emit sound from the screen which eliminates the need for earpiece and external speaker.

The Chinese company has plans to commercialise the smartphone and that has just commenced. The Meizu Zero crowdfunding campaign has now been launched on Indiegogo with the order expected to start shipping in April.

We didn’t expect the Meizu Zero to come cheap but nothing prepared us for the $1299 price tag which is slammed on the device. But then, the sleek mobile phone looks to be worth that much with the innovative features crammed inside. The crowdfunding is looking for just 100 backers for the version which has the 1299 price tag. This model is dubbed “Exclusive Engineer Unit” and is said to be handmade by Meizu’s engineers. That puts a question mark on the ability of the company to mass-produce the model. There is another version tagged “Exclusive Pioneering Unit” and with a $2999 price tag but that version is sold out. Don’t be surprised about that, there was just a single unit available.

Already 13 persons have backed the model as at the time of reporting. That means there are just 87 units left and the crowdfunding campaign will be open for the next 31 days. It is left to be seen what will happen next after the crowdfunding campaign. Perhaps, more units will be made available but the level of response during the crowdfunding exercise will determine that.

The device comes as the world’s first smartphone without any physical buttons or ports. It is also the first ever phone to carry support for 18W wireless charging. The Meizu Zero will be available on crowdfunding on Indiegogo later today as scheduled. The crowdfunding will officially open at 22.00 UTC+8.

The pricing and availability will be made bare but don’t get your hopes too high. The Meizu Zero’s design requires that certain features you’ll find on a regular flagship are lacking like a SIM slot, 3.5mm audo jack, and even a charging port. Specs wise, the Meizu Zero is a stunner as it features a 5.99-inch curved OLED panel with full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The mSound 2.0 technology makes it possible for the smartphone to emit sound from the screen which eliminates the need for earpiece and external speaker. The screen of the smartphone is embedded with an in-screen fingerprint reader.

The Meizu Zero also comes with an IP68 certified dustproof and waterproof device and to keep it completely sealed, there is no opening on the device. Thus, it is equipped with linear motor-powered pressure-sensitive virtual buttons for power and volume. The rear panel of the smartphone is made up of ceramic. There is also no SIM card slot on the device but it carries support for eSIM.

On the camera end, it packs a 20MP selfie camera and 12MP + 20MP dual camera module at the rear which is exactly the same one available on the Meizu 16th smartphone. It runs on Flyme 7 UI based on Android 9 Pie OS. Meizu says the Meizu Zero phone would be available in Black and White color options. The latter is just a concept phone for now, but it is believed to hit the shelves later this year with some changes and a different name. Both the phones come with the cleanest design ever seen on a mobile device and the absence of ports, keys and so on is always replaced by more innovative technologies. Here is a comparison between the first holeless devices in the smartphone market.

Design

I liked more the design of the Vivo Apex 2019 because it looks cleaner and more minimalist. Indeed, it has narrower bezels around the display, even though, on the other hand, it does not seem to have a front camera (Vivo did not confirm whether or not there is a pop-up camera). Further, the cameras on the back of the Vivo Apex 2019 are not included on a single protruding module like the Meizu Zero but they are separated, and the LED flash is barely visible unlike the one of the Meizu Zero. But if we talk about build quality, then maybe Meizu Zero is way better. Vivo did not mention whether or not the Apex 2019 is waterproof, but we know that Meizu Zero has an IP68 certification as well as a ceramic back. In both cases, the physical keys are replaced by touch control at the sides.

Display

We still have not enough info to establish which device has the best display. Both are AMOLED panels and both integrate an in-display fingerprint reader as well as a piezoelectric transductor which makes it double as a speaker. The differences we can notice are narrower bezels and the full-display fingerprint scanner on the Vivo Apex 2019, while Meizu Zero has thicker bezels on the upper and lower parts and a traditional in-display fingerprint reader that only works on a specific zone.

Hardware/Software

Vivo Apex 2019 features a way more advanced hardware, so it surely delivers a faster user experience and it is more suitable for productivity and heavy usage patterns. It comes with the most powerful chipset in the Android world: the octa-core Snapdragon 855 by Qualcomm, paired with 12 GB of RAM. Meizu Zero still has a Snapdragon 845 from 2018, so there is no way it can compete with its rival. But it will probably come with a more affordable price.

Camera

After announcing these handsets, the companies did not release all the details about their specs sheets, so we do not know everything. Among the things we do not know there are several camera specs. We just know the resolutions of Vivo Apex 2019’s rear cameras, while we do not even know whether or not it will feature a front camera. So we can not express a judgment on this.

Battery

Vivo and Meizu did not reveal the battery capacities of these phones, so we have no idea about how much they can last on a single charge. Given that they do not feature any port, they use alternative methods to charge the battery. Meizu Zero has Qi wireless charging that is more practical but slower, while Vivo Apex 2019 has the MagPort, a magnetic connector placed on the rear side for charging and data transfer.

Conclusion

At a first glance, I would choose the Vivo Apex 2019 because of its more futuristic design and its better hardware department. But it would be just a temporary decision because we still do not know the complete specs sheets of these phones, neither their price once they will be in the shelves (Apex 2019 is just a concept phone, so it will not even be released under this name and with those exact specifications). Do you like holeless phones or you think they are too limiting for the final user? Which one would you pick between Meizu Zero and Vivo Apex 2019?

Minimalism in the design became one of the most important priorities of smartphones manufacturers and the new Meizu Zero is a perfect example of it. The Chinese company announced a phone without ports, without speakers, and without physical keys in order to guarantee a totally clean design. Here, we will compare the new flagships with two other phones having an innovative design released in the last year: Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and Oppo Find X.

Design

In my opinion, Meizu Zero is the most innovative and beautiful phone when it comes to aesthetics because it has the cleanest design without needing a slider design nor a notch. It does not have any port and it gets charged via Qi wireless charging, while data transfer happens through WiFi or data networks. It does not have physical keys which are replaced by touch controls at the side, and it does not even have a speaker thanks to the piezoelectric transductor in the display delivering the audio. It does not even have a SIM slot as it supports the eSIM. Further, it has the best build quality and it is fully waterproof and dustproof thanks to the IP68 certification.

Display

Unfortunately, we still have no chance to test the display of the Meizu Zero because it is still not in the market, but on the paper, the display of Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 seems better because of the HDR technology making colors look more realistic. It is also protected by Gorilla Glass 5. On the other hand, Oppo Find X has slimmer bezels around the display and this may result better for people who care a lot about the front design. Meizu Zero has thicker bezels, but unlike the Oppo Find X, it does not need a motorized slider housing the sensors and the front camera.

Hardware/Software

All these phones come with the same chipset, so you should not expect a significative difference in their performances. Whatever you choose, you will get a very fast and smooth phone in every scenario, including gaming and the most-demanding multi-tasking. Note that Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 comes with up to 10 GB of RAM, while Oppo Find X does not and we still do not know the configurations in which Meizu Zero will be available as the company did not reveal all the specs of the handset. So Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 may effectively be the most suitable handset for heavy usage patterns.

Camera

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has the most convincing rear camera, at least on the paper. It is a dual sensor with a 12 MP resolution and an f/1.8 aperture, and it supports both OIS and dual pixel autofocus. Even the front cameras seem to be better: they consist of two sensors with 24 and 2 MP (the secondary one is a depth sensor, while in the rear camera it is a telephoto lens), paired with a front-facing LED flash.

Battery

Unfortunately, Meizu did not reveal the battery capacity of the new Zero. Given the absence of ports, there may be more space for the battery, but we have no idea whether or not it will be big. Meanwhile, Oppo Find X has a long-lasting 3730 mAh, while Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has an average 3200 mAh unit that is not able to last as long as its opponent. Note that Meizu Zero cannot be charged via a USB port, so the charging process is slower.

Price

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is an affordable flagship carrying a €560 price tag in the global market, Oppo Find X was launched with a starting price of €770, while we still do not know when Meizu Zero will hit the shelves, neither its price. Personally, I believe that Meizu Zero is a very innovative phone but it is still not so suitable for daily use. 18W wireless charging is still too slow for modern standards and piezoelectric speakers are still too poor in terms of audio experience, so I would not be so comfortable with a phone like that. Unless it comes with an affordable price. But it is still a great experiment and we appreciate it a lot, hoping that Meizu and other Chinese brands will keep innovating like that. The winner of the comparison is the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 due to its more affordable price tag, amazing camera performance, and great display, but some may like the Oppo Find X more due to its bigger battery, thinner bezels and its more innovative motorized slider.

The world’s first non-porous smartphone features a 3D unibody ceramic build with no physical buttons or ports on its edges. It is equipped with Super mCharge wireless charging technology which makes it possible to charge the device wirelessly with a charging rate of 18W. Here is all the information on the newly announce Meizu Zero futuristic smartphone.

The mSound 2.0 screen sound technology which is closely attached to the display of the Meizu Zero allows it to produce sound through the display of the phone. Hence, there is no earpiece on the device. Li Nan said that advantage of screen sound technology is that users can listen to phone call even when the device is held upside down. The Meizu Zero is fitted with a curved 5.99-inch OLED screen which is embedded with an optical fingerprint sensor. The handset sports a thin and light profile.

The exact size of the battery of the Meizu Zero is not known. Li Nan claimed that after working on for 2 years along with 75 related patents, the Super mCharge 18W wireless charging which is equivalent to 18W wired fast charging has been introduced on the Meizu Zero smartphone.

Instead of physical SIM card, the Meizu Zero is equipped with eSIM card. The smartphone is equipped with linear motor on the sides which replaces the physical buttons for volume and power. The Meizu Zero holeless phone is an IP68 rated device that can remain submerged in water for up 2 hours and 30 minutes. Since the Meizu Zero supports Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, users can make use of Bluetooth enabled earphones to listen to the songs wirelessly.
