Huawei Nova 3i is the first Kirin 710 chipset smartphone from the company that was announced two months ago. The handset has been available in China in variants such as 64 GB storage + 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage + 4 GB RAM. The Chinese manufacturer has introduced a higher configuration model in the home market. The company has also started selling the Nova 3i in a new color variant of Acaia Red

When Huawei had announced the Nova 3i smartphone, it was made available only in three color choices of black, white and blue purple. However, it is only now that the company has launched the handset in a new color variant of Acaia Red.

The base model of the Nova 3i that features 128 GB of storage + 4 GB RAM is priced at 2,199 Yuan (~$322). The higher edition that is packed with 64 GB of storage + 6 GB RAM can be availed at 1,999 Yuan (~$291).  The newly introduced 128 GB storage + 6 GB RAM variant of the smartphone carries a price tag of 2,399 Yuan (~$351).

The Huawei Nova 3i houses a notched display of 6.3 inches that produces 19.5:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution. The Kirin 710 chipset is the driving force of the smartphone. What’s interesting about the Nova 3i is that it features dual front-facing cameras and dual rear cameras. The notch includes 24-megapixel + 2-megapixel dual camera setup which carries support for AI scene recognition, AI smart beauty and AI HDR Pro.

The back panel of the Nova 3i is equipped with 16-megapixel + 2-megapixel dual camera setup that supports AI blurring effect for selfie shots and AI scene recognition. The handset comes loaded with Android 8.1 Oreo OS that is overlaid with EMUI 8.2 UI. The smartphone receives power from 3,340mAh battery.

Huawei has been caught in an advert mess of its own doing. The manufacturer was “caught” using a DSLR in place of its own phone, the Nova 3/Nova 3i in this case for camera samples in a video ad.

The 30-second video ad which features Egyptian actress, Sarah Elshamy, has her significant trying to take a selfie of her while she tries to apply her makeup before he does. In the completed ad, the scene is to actually show off the AI beauty feature of the camera which takes beautified pictures of you that appears as if you have make-up on.

Unfortunately, behind-the-scenes pictures posted by the actress on her Instagram page shows that in this particular scene, the man is actually not holding the Nova 3 or Nova 3i. He’s not even holding anything in this “selfie-taking position”, rather there is another man with a DSLR camera at an angle that makes it appear as if a selfie is being taken.

We probably wouldn’t know that there was no actual selfie if not for Ms. Elshamy but seeing as a feature of the phone which may convince buyers to purchase the phone is being advertised and it has been revealed that the selfie was not taken by the phone, prospective buyers may not be so eager to buy any of the two phones anymore.

Ms. Elshamy has since deleted the picture but the damage has been done already. Huawei will most likely offer an explanation and an apology as to what happened and might even throw in a freebie or discount to entice customers but the deed has been done already.

Huawei is not new to this “not-totally-honest advertising”. It has been caught in the past passing of DSLR photos as camera samples of the Huawei P9 and also photoshopping the bezels on the marketing photos for the Huawei P8 and P8 Max.

So this phone is definitely the winner when it comes to speed and multi-tasking. However, its opponent is still very competitive with its new Kirin 710 chipset. But personally, we would go with the Mi A2.

Besides performing better, Xiaomi Mi A2 has also a better dual camera setup on its backside. With 20 and 12 MP resolutions as well as a f/1.8 aperture, Xiaomi Mi A2 is one of the best midrange devices in terms of camera quality, at least on the paper. Further, it has a powerful 20 MP front camera. Huawei Nova 3i is surely inferior with its 16 + 2 MP dual camera, but we believe it will be able to shoot better selfies thanks to its dual front camera with 24 and 2 MP resolutions. In a few words, Xiaomi Mi A2 has a better rear camera and Huawei Nova 3i has a better selfie camera.

Battery

Huawei Nova 3i has a bigger battery with a 3340 mAh, but the capacity is not everything to evaluate the potential battery life of a phone. We will let you know more when we personally review this phone because given that Qualcomm SoCs are often optimized very well (and given the presence of the stock Android One), Xiaomi Mi A2 may feature a similar battery life even though its battery is smaller. Huawei has finally taken the wraps off the Huawei Nova 3 and Nova 3i smartphones in China today. Unlike the earlier smartphones in this series which were essentially mid-rangers, the company has boosted the new Nova 3 model with the flagship AI enabled Kirin 970 chipset inside. Not just that, the phone supports the recently announced GPU Turbo technology as well, making it a power packed smartphone for a pretty aggressive price tag.

The Huawei Nova series has always focused on the camera experience. The same applies with the new Nova 3 as well. Like the Nova 2S that was announced back in December 2017, the new model features 4 cameras in total, two on the front and two on the back. This will ensure that you’ll be able to capture good quality selfies with bokeh from both the ends.

Huawei Nova 3 Design

Huawei has decided to stick with glass on the new model, like its recent releases. So, the Huawei Nova 3 comes with 3D double curved glass on both the sides. The glass at the back features high refractive index and comes in four color options: Black, light blue, primrose gold, and blue-violet (similar to the shade on the gradient Aurora P20 pro).

Up front, you have a notch which houses a number of sensors like ambient light, proximity, IR light sensor for 3D face recognition, dual cameras (on either sides) and earpiece. So, its bigger than some notch phones like the OnePlus 6.

Huawei Nova 3 Specs

The Huawei Nova 3 is quite loaded in terms of specs. The phone features a large 6.3-inch display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 2340 x 1080p resolution. The phone supports IR face unlocks and even 3D face recognition payments. Note that there’s a fingerprint sensor on the back as well. The front camera is made up of a 24MP f/2.0 sensor along with a secondary 2MP sensor. The front camera supports AI features as well as an enhanced beauty mode.

The rear camera is composed of a 16MP +24MP dual camera setup (Color + B/W sensors) with f/1.8 aperture lens, PDAF, contrast AF, AI scene recognition (22 categories and 500 different scenes), short video effects via AI and even HDR Pro at the hardware level. This is said to bring HDR mode in the preview window as well as while shooting videos.

As for the hardware inside, the Nova 3 boasts of the flagship Kirin 970 AI chipset inside with 6GB of RAM and 64GB / 128GB of internal storage options. The storage can be further expanded up to 256GB via MicroSD. There’s a pretty decent 3750mAh battery inside that should last up to a day as well as a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack. Note that the phone comes with support for GPU Turbo which should ensure smooth gaming experience on its large screen.

Other notable features of the Nova 3 include 3D Emoji AR support, Android 8.1 based EMUI 8.2 UI, USB Type-C, and dual SIM support. It’s worth mentioning that some of the features like 3D face recognition payments and AI short video effects will not be available at launch. Instead, these features will rollout in future updates.

Huawei Nova 3 Price & Availability

The Nova 3 is priced at 2999 Yuan for the 6+128GB edition for all the four colors. Note that the Primrose Gold is a special edition model, but the pricing remains the same. It could be a limited edition model.

The phone goes on sale on July 19 (tomorrow) at 10:08AM via Vmall.

Huawei still has its groove on as regards the manufacture of beautifully designed smartphones both on the flagship and mid-range categories. The company is expected to take the wraps off the Nova 3 alongside the Nova 3i on July 26. We have already spotted the Nova 3 design and specs online. Now, it is the turn of the Nova 3i renders to make an entrance onto the scene along with the pricing and key configuration.

The Nova 3i render, memory configurations and their pricing details were reportedly outed by some sellers on AliExpress. According to the details, the Nova 3i will be available in a 4GB + 64GB storage priced at $480 (about 3,216 yuan). There is also a 6GB + 64GB memory variant which will come with a slightly higher $520 (~3,484 yuan) price tag. Both versions will be available in four colors: white, black, red and purple.  There is even talk of a 4GB + 128GB version.

One of the major details we can take out from the outed renders of the Nova 3i is the lack of a notch design on the display. The device keeps up with the full-screen 18:9 display design. In Addition, the device will ship with the new Hisilicon Kirin 710 chipset. On the camera end, the Huawei Nova 3i packs a dual rear-mounted dual camera setup comprising a 16MP + 2MP combo. The device will also hold a dual camera setup at the front which is a 24MP + 2MP combo. Thankfully, the device is among Huawei’s models that will feature support for GPU Turbo. The Huawei model will be fuelled by a 3340mAh battery. Quite interesting is the fact that the device is not listed as a pre-order but actually available to buy right away.

Huawei will launch the Nova 3i in The Philippines on July 28. It appears the phone will also be available in Vietnam as pricing for the phone in the Southeast Asian country has leaked.

Thanks to a flyer from Vietnam’s largest mobile retail chain The Gio Di Dong, we now know the Huawei Nova 3i will sell for 11,990,000 Vietnamese Dong which is roughly USD520. With the above price, the Nova 3i is definitely not a mid-range phone. It appears it is the same device as the Nova 3 but with a different name.

We already know the Nova 3i will come with dual front and dual rear cameras based on the leaked photo from The Philippines. We also know that the primary cameras on both sides are 24MP sensors. Since we have already established that the Nova 3i is the Nova 3, then the secondary rear sensor should be a 16MP while the second front camera is a 2MP sensor based on the Nova 3 specs on the Huawei store.

Other specifications include a 6.3-inch FHD+ display with a notch, a Kirn 970 processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 3750mAh battery. The flyer also reveals the phone will be available in red and blue.

An Indian publication had reported yesterday that Huawei may debut Nova 3 series in India on July 26. The Nova 3 series is expected to include handsets like Nova 3 and Nova 3i. Around a month ago, a report had revealed that Huawei is prepping up a new SoC called Kirin 710 to rival with the newly introduced Snapdragon 710. A Chinese leakster that has shared an image which compares the specs of Nova 3 and 3i reveals that the latter is powering by the upcoming Kirin 710 SoC.

There are five differences between the Nova 3 and 3i. The Nova 3 features a 3D glass gradient body and it will be arriving in five colors including Aurora, Acacia Red, Bright Black, Light Blue, and Gold. On the other side the Nova 3i will have a 2.5D glass gradient body and it will be available in four colors including Aurora, Acacia Red, Bright Black, Pearl White.

The Huawei Nova 3 will be a flagship phone as it features Kirin 970 SoC. It will also include 6 GB of RAM and an internal storage of 128 GB. A 3,750mAh battery is enabled with support for 9V/2A will be powering the Nova 3.

The Nova 3i will be a mid-range phone with the all new Kirin 710 SoC present inside it. Its variants are 4 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage. It will be receiving power to perform from a 3,340mAh battery that will support 5V/2A charging.

The rear side of the Nova 3 will feature 24-megapixel + 16-megapixel dual camera. It will be equipped with dual selfie snapper featuring a 24-megapixel sensor and a 2-megapixel sensor.

Like the Nova 3, the mid-range Nova 3i will be also equipped with four cameras. The leakster has claimed that the Nova 3i could be priced between 1,999 Yuan (~$299) and 2,199 Yuan (~$329). As far the Kirin 710 is concerned, it is speculated to be a 12nm SoC that will be arriving as a successor for the Kirin 659 SoC. Compared to the predecessor, the Kirin 710 offers twofold better CPU performance and its GPU performance has been improved by 2.26 times. On AnTuTu, the Kirin 710 has score more than 130,000 points. Also, SoC is pegged to include AI capabilities.

Apart from India, Philippines is the other country that is expected to receive the Nova 3i smartphone later this month.

First, Huawei announced the Nova 3e (in Malaysia) which is actually the same device as the P20 Lite. Then the Nova 3 got an early reveal today even though it isn’t due to launch until July 18. And now there is the Nova 3i which is heading to The Philippines.

The poster for the Nova 3i was spotted by a Facebook user who then shared it on a Huawei and Honor Philippines group on the platform.

The poster shows the Nova 3i will also have a notch like the Nova 3 and Nova 3e. It will also have  “24MP Four AI Cameras” and 128GB of storage. The Nova 3 has four cameras, so there is a chance this is the same device but launching under a different name. It may also pack different specs.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Nova 3 already has multiple variants. Last year’s Nova 2 has multiple variants too. Apart from the main Nova 2, there is the Nova 2 Plus, the Nova 2 Lite (Huawei Y7 Prime 2018), the Nova 2i (Maimang 6/Honor 9i/Mate 10 Lite) and the Nova 2s.

Although the poster doesn’t mention the date of the launch, we guess it will be July 28 since Huawei already has an event scheduled for that day in the country.
