I’ve been using the Nubia M2 for the past couple of weeks and I think it’s a solid budget phone that easily challenges the likes of Xiaomi or other top affordable smartphone makers. UNBOXING

The phone ships with all the usual items, no extras included.

DESIGN AND DISPLAY

We don’t have a full-screen design but the Nubia M2 is just gorgeous. It’s all metal, it has nice a really nice combination of black color with gold accents and nicely chamfered edges. The buttons are really nice too and the phone is really thin and comfortable to hold.

The display is easily one of the best in this price range. The AMOLED panel has deep blacks, punchy colors and good contrast.

Nubia implemented a selfie camera with a lot of megapixels to play with. The fingerprint scanner is really fast and reliable to use.  Nicely backlit capacitive keys also serve as a pulsing notification light.

Other features include a headset jack that provides good sound quality and the loudspeaker is one of the best in class but its placed on the bottom left side, so you will end up covering it up quite often.

Finally, the Nubia M2 follows the trend of dual-camera setups, which uses sapphire glass lens for scratch resistance.

HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

Snapdragon 625 is known not only for its superb power efficiency but also for great overall performance.

The Nubia M2 is no exception. You can play most of the 3D games on this phone without any issues. No Lag, not stutter whatsoever. You may see a few skipped frames but its just nitpicking, this is a budget phone after all. Finally, The phone does not get hot either.

BENCHMARKS

USER INTERFACE

You are going to either love or hate the Nubia 4.0 user interface that is based on Android 6.0, at least on the official international model that I have.

I usually prefer stock Android but I kind of like this user interface even though there is no app tray but there are quite a few customization options and tweaks to play with. Edge gestures may look like a gimmick but they are actually useful if you get used to using them. You can also adjust display settings, customize the navigation buttons, use a split-screen mode or use gesture controls that work well. I know that a lot of you are frustrated that the phone runs Android 6 but the overall performance is excellent. The phone is really fast and snappy even after installing plenty of applications. CAMERAS

There are a lot of camera modes including a slow shutter, slow motion and a pro mode that allows you to adjust quite a few image settings. I’m tired of saying the same thing but since it’s winter time, I could only test the camera on a cloudy and dark day. Still, the overall daylight image quality is one of the best in this price range as the pictures are detailed and even dynamic range is usually adjusted properly.

You can also take pretty good pictures in low light but it depends on the situation. Some of the shots have quite a bit of noise but they are still usable for social media.

Portrait mode takes beautiful pictures but some shots have a few artifacts going on around the edges of the subject making the photo look unnatural.

Selfie image quality is very good too as there is plenty of detail and sharpness despite the fact that most of the pictures were taken in poor lighting.

This phone can shoot videos in 4k and the quality is very good for a budget phone. There is a good amount of detail and CAF works very well. However, there are quite a few video artifacts going on but that’s the case with all budget phones.

1080p selfie video quality is good too. Sound recording quality good be great but the background noise reduction leads to some sound artifacts that I don’t really like.

CONNECTIVITY

In terms of connectivity, the Nubia M2 is just excellent. Call quality and signal reception are really good, Wifi and Bluetooth work fine. You can also choose between 2 SIMs or 1 SIM and 1 microSD card for storage expansion. The phone supports USB OTG, but, unfortunately, there is no NFC. There are quite a few sensors, including a gyroscope, meaning that the Nubia M2 is compatible with VR headsets and 360 content.

BATTERY LIFE

Battery life is just superb thanks to the combination of power efficient chipset, relatively large battery pack and Amoled display. Your mileage may vary but I was able to get over 13 hours of screen-on time, which is more than enough for at least a couple of days of moderate usage.

Finally, I like that you can quickly fill up the battery with the supplied charger in just about 1h 20 mins.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, the Nubia M2 is a great budget phone. I love its design and excellent build quality, great overall performance, solid cameras and a very good battery life. The only thing that may disappoint you is outdated Android 6 but at least the phone is very snappy. To be honest, I didn’t expect much from this phone but after using it for a couple of weeks, I can easily recommend it as one of the best phones in this price range as it offers a lot of value for the price.

After launching the Nubia Z17 Mini and Nubia Z17 flagship smartphone, ZTE has now unveiled a low budget phone called the Nubia M2 Play. The new Nubia M2 Play belongs to the M2 series of Nubia phones. The Nubia M2 Play is a camera-centric smartphone has lower specs than the M2 but is similar to the M2 Lite model.

The ZTE Nubia M2 Play is a dual-SIM 4G smartphone that comes with a metallic chassis and its front features a 2.5D curved glass that houses a 5.5-inch TFT screen that offers a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels along with a pixel count of 271 ppi. Even the frontal fingerprint reader is also placed under the front glass.

The inclusion of the Snapdragon 435 clearly indicates that it is not a high-end phone. The SD 435 chipset is coupled with 3 GB of RAM. The Nubia M2 is driven by the power efficient Snapdragon 625 SoC and 4 GB of RAM.  The M2 Lite is fueled by MediaTek MT6750 chipset and 4 GB of RAM.

For photography, the Nubia M2 Play offers a 13-megapixel rear camera from Sony with f/2.2 aperture. Portuguese footballer and Real Madrid C.F player, Cristiano Ronaldo is the brand ambassador for Nubia. Earlier today, he took to his Weibo page to share a picture from his photo shoot with the soon-to-be-released Nubia Z17 Mini.

The image gives us a good look at Nubia’s second dual camera phone for the year, the first being the Nubia M2 released last week. There are a number of differences between both devices but we will just focus on the obvious ones. First the dual cameras and the LED flash are positioned differently. In the Z17 Mini, they are positioned along the antenna line like you have in the iPhone 7. The LED flash also precedes the cameras.

For the Nubia M2, it sports the U-design antenna lines, so you have the dual cameras below it. The sensor also come before the LED flash. Another major difference is the position of the fingerprint scanner. It sits upfront underneath the home button in the M2 but is positioned at the back on the Z17 Mini.

Both phones will also differ in terms of specs. According to the information on TENAA, the Nubia Z17 Mini will have a 5.2-inch 1080p screen, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, 16MP front facing camera and probably dual 13MP sensors on the back. Due to the smaller screen, the battery has been cut down to 2930mAh.

The processor for the Z17 Mini is clocked at 1.8GHz but is unspecified. Some say it might be the Snapdragon 653 but it’s clocked at 1.95GHz on the Galaxy C9 Pro and the OPPO F3 Plus, so it is either a different processor or TENAA has the clockspeed wrong.

The Nubia Z17 Mini is scheduled for an April 6 launch and that is when we will get to know the price.

Nubia has just released three brand new devices in China, starting with the ZTE Nubia M2. Unlike earlier rumors which said that the phone will be called as the Nubia Z17 Mini, the company has decided to place this brand new device in their mid-range M series.

Nubia smartphones are always known for their beautiful design and stellar built quality. The Nubia M2 continues that tradition by using the company’s nubiArc design concept in a 7mm thin metal body. The front is adorned with 2.5D glass. The phone has a similar design as the other Nubia models in the market, which is actually a good thing considering we like Nubia’s design philosophy in general. The overall body is polished, sand blasted, and goes through 72 processes to create a soft baby skin like texture.

There are two color options available, black gold and champagne gold.

One interesting design feature of the phone (which we had already seen in the leaked posters a few days back) is that the M2 comes with an oval physical home button up front, but there’s a traditional Nubia red circle present as well. Personally, I didn’t like the red circle inside the oval button, but I am sure some fans will be happy to see the familiar circle present on the new device.

Nubia M2 Specs

Coming to the specs, the Nubia M2 features the Snapdragon 625 chipset under the hood with 4GB RAM and 64GB / 128GB ROM options. The phone supports MicroSD expansion as well. As for the screen, you get a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080p resolution.

The highlight of the Nubia M2 is the 13MP f/2.0 dual cameras at the back. The company claims that they are using a custom depth camera setup from Sony. The basic setup is simple, with one RGB camera sensor and another being a black and white sensor. Another feature of the camera include a mixed focus mode comprising of PDAF + contrast focus. Up front, you get a 16MP camera for selfies.

Inside, the phone comes with a pretty large 3630mAh battery inside, which should be easily enough for a day’s usage. It supports NeoCharge fast charging @ 5V 5.2A = 26W. As for connectivity, the Nubia M2 boasts of full netcom 3.0 standard, which means support for all three networks in China. Other features include VoLTE, front facing fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C charging, Dolby Surround 7.1, and TruSignal Enhancement technology.

The Nubia M2 starts at 2699 Yuan ($391) for the 4GB + 64GB model and goes up to 2999 Yuan ($435) for the 4GB + 128GB variant.

Along with this flagship, the company also released a cheaper Nubia M2 Lite version with less powerful specs. The major difference in this version is that the phone trades the dual cameras with a single 16MP f/2.0 ISOCELL sensor at the back. There are 3GB + 64GB and 4GB RAM + 32GB memory options. Yes, the 4GB + 32GB ROM combination sounds odd, but that’s what the official poster said. The processor inside is unknown but it’s probably Helio P10. Other features include a 5.5-inch AMOLED display and 3000mAh battery.

The Nubia M2 Lite starts at 1799 Yuan ($260).

Nubia N2

Remember we had mentioned a new 5000mAh battery Nubia smartphone a couple of days back? That’s real as well! Alongside these two smartphones, the company also released the ZTE Nubia N2 smartphone at the event in Shenzhen today. One of the highlights of the phone is its thickness. Despite the huge 5000mAh battery inside, the phone measures just 7.9mm in body thickness which is quite impressive! Now, from its name, you might have realized that the Nubia N2 is the successor to the Nubia N1 released last year. It was another 5000mAh smartphone but was significantly thicker than this featuring an 8.9mm body. So, it’s great to see the thickness go down so much. Also, note that the Nubia N2 comes with 18W fast charger for its 5000mAh battery.

Other features of the Nubia N2 include a 5.5-inch AMOLED 1080p panel, octa-core 64-bit processor (model not disclosed but should be Helio P10), 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM, and 16MP Rear camera with Neovision 6.0.

The phone goes on sale on April 8 for 1999 Yuan ($290).
