Samsung is one of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world, and the company introduces dozens, if not hundreds, of new models every year. However, did you know that all Samsung models, whether entry-level or flagship, have a common problem? This problem, caused by the slowness of the stock camera application, has bothered some users, if not everyone, and caused them to miss unique moments by milliseconds. The company eventually admitted that the phone’s camera was slower than it should be and fixed it, but not everyone received the fix. Here are the details…

Samsung just admitted your phone’s camera is slower than it should be

Samsung has recently admitted that its stock camera app on Galaxy smartphones can sometimes be slow in capturing moments. The admission came with a new update that introduced a feature called Quick Shutter Tap in the Camera Assistant app. This feature captures photos as soon as your finger touches the shutter button, rather than when you release it. That’s how saving off a few milliseconds from the capture time.

While this feature can help you capture the moments you actually wanted to capture, the fact that it’s only available through the Camera Assistant app is a cause for concern. The Camera Assistant app is not compatible with lower-end or mid-range smartphones, and even some high-end smartphones aren’t compatible with it.

This means that millions of Galaxy users are being deprived of faster capture times (and probably cherished memories) because they can’t use the app. Instead of hiding this simple option in the Camera Assistant app, Samsung should bring the feature to the stock camera app on all Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The feature should be turned on by default, so that everyone can benefit from it.

In addition to Quick Shutter Tap, Samsung should also consider bringing the Capture Speed feature from the Camera Assistant app to the stock camera’s settings section. Samsung phones can sometimes take too much time to capture a shot for HDR and multi-frame noise reduction processing, and this can lead to missed moments or blurred images of fast-moving subjects.

By automatically detecting moving objects and prioritizing shutter speed over image quality in such situations, Samsung can significantly improve the camera experience for a lot of Galaxy users. Samsung’s admission that its stock camera app can be slow in capturing moments is a step in the right direction. However, the company needs to take more concrete steps to address this issue.

By bringing Quick Shutter Tap and Capture Speed to the stock camera app, the company can improve the camera experience for all Galaxy users, regardless of their device’s specifications. We hope Samsung takes this feedback into consideration and makes the necessary changes in its upcoming updates.

Samsung is reportedly planning to expand its assembly of smartphone camera modules. If reports are true, the move will reduce the overall unit price but may escalate the tension among suppliers.

The latest report (source: TheElec) says that the company will expand the assembly of camera modules considerably next year by taking over most of the assembly process. As of 2020, the suppliers have apparently been assembling the triple/quad-camera modules entirely for Samsung.

Mixed reactions from suppliers

However, Samsung’s new move will help save the assembling cost shelled out to the supplier and improve sales from 2021 and beyond. That said, this plan seems to have triggered varied reactions among suppliers in South Korea. For instance, companies like Namuga and CoAsia, seem to focus more on front cameras and not multi-modules at the back. Hence, they see this as a great window of opportunity as it may result in increased camera orders from Samsung.

However, for Mcnex, this could be a big blow as it is at the risk of reduced profit. This is because the report says Mcnex has been assembling rear multi-camera modules for Samsung. Now that Samsung is planning to assemble them on its own, Mcnex could lose out on assembly orders and in-turn lose profit.

Further report adds that Samsung has been getting orders extensively from the above companies for its smartphones. The list only extends to Partron, Cammsys, Powerlogics for the upcoming Galaxy S20 FE.

What could be the motive behind this?

This move is however believed to be a strategy for increasing its overall sales. Companies like Mcnex and Powerlogics recorded 1 Trillion won in 2019 whereas Samsung’s own IT & Mobile division dropped to 9.3 Trillion won in 2019 compared to 10.2 Trillion won in 2018.

Samsung continues to diversify the camera module suppliers and look for alternative options to keep the price competitive. This corroborates with its own Electro-Mechanics division’s plans to enter the mid-range camera market a while ago.

That said, experts feel that Samsung may also run into issues like assembly defects, third-parties sending sub-par goods. Nevertheless, we will have to wait and see how this pans out in the future.

Meizu‘s latest smartphone, the Meizu M6S comes with pretty powerful specs and a solid design. The company seems to have partnered heavily with Samsung for this device, as the processor as well as the camera sensors are from the South Korean giant. While we know that the Exynos 7872 does well in performance as compared to the Snapdragon 625 that powers most mid-range phones, we are also interested to see whether the 16MP Samsung CMOS sensor at the back performs well in real life.

Before we take a look at the Meizu M6S camera samples, let’s first take a look at its camera specs. The phone features a 16MP Samsung CMOS sensor at the back with f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, dual tone flash, and 5P lens. Up front, there’s an 8MP f/2.0 CMOS sensor, once again from Samsung, with 4P lens and Arcsoft’s algorithms.

On paper, the setup is pretty good. So, let’s take a look at how Meizu M6S’ rear camera performs in real life.

The phone was quick to take pictures and the quality of the camera samples were also pretty good. The Meizu M6S with its stock camera app was quick to focus and took pictures with good levels of detail and colors.

In bright lighting conditions, the color reproduction is quite good for a $150 phone. Photos were clear and focused and you should be happy with the phone’s performance on most occasions. However, I did find some of the camera samples to be a bit overexposed. Also, the dynamic range isn’t as good as I have seen on other premium budget offerings, like the Redmi 5 Plus. If there was ample sunlight, you could easily overexpose some parts of the photo. However, most of the images in ample lighting conditions turned out to be good and satisfactory.

Low light images also have decent levels of detail. But it may not be the best budget camera that we’ve seen. Colors were dull in low-light photos. I personally would have hoped to see better details on these photos, but some of the low light photos have turned out to be good. So, the M6S manages to do well when there’s decent light and worse in super low-light conditions.

In general, we can say the M6S has a pretty decent camera for a 2018 budget phone. We are going to come up with a Meizu M6S vs Redmi 5 Plus camera comparison very soon. So stay tuned for that!

Another thing that I noticed was the super large file size of the samples. On an average, the Meizu M6S camera samples were of 10-15MB in size, which is quite big for any smartphone camera sample. On the other hand, the Redmi 5 Plus camera samples were anywhere between 3-5MB in size.

Earlier today there were leaks which revealed that Xiaomi’s next device will be a very powerful one. The new leaked image on Chinese social media site states that Xiaomi’s upcoming device will sport 5.5 inches 1080p OLED display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor.

This new device will also feature the front fingerprint sensor like Mi 5, 4GB/6GB LPDDR4 RAM options along with 64GB/128GB internal storage. It will also have a large battery of 3700 mAh capacity to juice this powerful hardware.

The camera on this new device will be the highlight feature as it is said to be same camera sensor found on the Galaxy S7 (which is one of the best camera phones in the market today), i.e. either the Samsung ISOCELL S5K2L1 or the Sony IMX260. A 4-axis OIS along with this powerful sensor will surely give amazing pictures.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 was officially launched just a few days back and now we are getting news of it powering a few devices already as yesterday we heard about Asus ZenFone 3 Deluxe apart from a couple of Nexus devices.

Unfortunately, like most leaks that originate from Weibo, we can’t verify the information leaked today. Only time will tell whether the upcoming Mi flagship, most likely the Mi Note 2, is as powerful as revealed by the image today.

Dual cameras seem to be the new trend in the market. While Huawei has embraced this technology on almost all flagship smartphones of 2016, other Chinese firms like Xiaomi are also reportedly working on dual camera smartphones scheduled for launch in the second half of 2016. And guess who’s going to supply these Chinese companies with these modules? Samsung!

According to a new report from South Korea, Samsung will start supplying dual camera modules to two major smartphone companies, namely Xiaomi and LeEco from July this year. This fits perfectly with the rumors that we have been hearing about the Xiaomi Mi5S flagship and its dual camera setup. However, these two may not be the only manufacturers getting the module from Samsung, as even OPPO, whose smartphones are doing very well in China, is said to be a potential client.

So, it looks like the market will soon be flooded with dual camera flagships. We have already heard rumors about the Mi5S and Mi Note 2 flagships coming with this setup, and now it looks like LeEco and OPPO phones are also going to feature dual cameras. While these phones may have the same supplier, i.e. Samsung, what would be really interesting to see is the optimizations done by each company in order to improve the pictures taken from the module.

Huawei has proved that it knows how to make the best out of its dual camera module, but we will have to wait and see Xiaomi, LeEco and OPPO’s take on this setup.

Xiaomi’s first dual camera phone should be the Mi5S, and we should see the smartphone sometime in the second half of this year.

Samsung is finally unveiled the Tizen OS platform. They have been held the Tizen Developer Conference, the Samsung Vice President Jong-Deok Cho presented the Tizen 3.0 will support 64-bit architecture of the Intel and ARM chipset.

Tizen 3.0 operating system also brings a 3D interface for the display and performance of the more interesting applications.

At the event also revealed that Tizen is not only developed for mobile phones, but also other devices such as cameras. Samsung NX300M is the first Samsung camera that running with Tizen operating system.

Jong-Deok Cho said that the Camera with Tizen platform has 2X faster than Linux-based platforms. The camera supports 20 megapixel resolution and is capable of capturing 9 images per second. Samsung mirrorless camera NX300M was launched last month at a price of 890,000 Korean won (approximately $900 USD) with 18-55mm kit lens.

While the first mobile device with Tizen operating system will reportedly launch in the first quarter of 2014. This will be the first Tizen phones running version 2.2.1. Meanwhile, the Tizen OS 3.0 with multi-user features sliding predict third-quarter of 2014.
