The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus went on sale in some markets yesterday. The new flagships cost more than the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge but those prices are justified. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus cost more to manufacture hence the reason for their high prices.

A report by IHS Markit has revealed the bill of materials of the 64GB Galaxy S8. It costs Samsung $307.50 to put together the 5.8-inch device. Of that amount, only $5.9 makes up manufacturing expenses. The rest is the cost of materials. That makes the Galaxy S8 $43.34 and $36.29 more expensive in terms of production than the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge respectively.

There is no breakdown of the cost of each individual component but the report says the 3000mAh battery costs $4.50 while the sum of the NAND flash memory and DRAM is $41.50.

You might wonder why Samsung is selling it for more than double the cost of production then. The cheapest price you can get the Galaxy S8 is $720 and that is a $412.50 difference.  To be fair to Samsung, they also have to bear the cost of shipping, marketing, and import taxes to destination countries. Retailers and carriers also get their cut and some is also set aside for research and development. There is also administrative costs which includes the salaries of executives and managers.

The bottom line is Samsung does makes profit from the sales but not as much as what you get when you subtract the cost of production from selling price.

The Galaxy S8 Plus will cost a little bit more due to the fact that it uses a bigger display and has a larger battery.

After much speculations, rumours and leaks, South Korean tech giant Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy S8 along with the Galaxy S8 Plus in a ceremony today. The Samsung Galaxy S8 launch is the biggest event the tech giant is hosting since the Galaxy Note 7 saga so, the event was a highly anticipated one.  As you already know, the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus were billed to be the first smartphones to pack Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 chipset and indeed they were launched with the powerful flagship chip. But whether you’ll get to buy the Snapdragon 835-powered version of the S8 or S8 Plus will depend on where you live.

Design & Hardware

The Samsung Galaxy S8 features a design which isn’t entirely different from its predecessors but it comes with an unusually high screen-to-body ratio. A large display ensured the traditional home button which sits at the front of the screen under the display was absent. Instead, the Galaxy S8 features a virtual home button. The bezels are thin and the display is a curved one.

On the specifications, the Galaxy S8 sports a 5.8-ich Super AMOLED display with a resolution of  2960 x 1440 pixels and 570ppi. The processor is an octa-core Snapdragon 835 chipset clocked at 2.35GHz on some version while there is another version powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 8895 chip also clocked at 2.35GHz. The United States will get the Snapdragon 835-powered version while other international countries would get the Exynos 8895-powered version. China is said to also get the Qualcomm-powered version but there is no official word on that yet. Both versions are backed by 4GB of RAM while there is 64GB of storage onboard which is expandable via a microSD slot.

Camera, Battery

On the camera aspect, the Galaxy S8 packs a 12MP rear camera with a f/1.7 aperture, OIS and LED flash and at the front, there is an 8MP selfie camera with a f/1.7 aperture and autofocus. We are yet to see camera samples of theGalaxy S8’s camera but we believe it would be a very powerful setup. Keeping the lights on is a generous 3000mAh battery which should do a good job in that regard.

Connectivity, Other Features

Other features include a USB Type-C port, NFC and MST for Samsung Pay, IP68 water and dust resistance and yes, it still packs a 3.5mm headphone jack. There is also a wireless charging support as well as Cat. 16 LTE. Others include Bluetooth 5.0 which is capable of streaming to two devices at the same time and Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac. The Galaxy S8 isn’t too wide despite its large size, packing a dimension of 148.9 x 68.1 x 8 mm and it weighs just 155g. The device runs on Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box and also comes with Samsung’s new Bixby Assistant which is launched by pressing a dedicated physical button located on the side of the phone.

Pricing & Availability

As for the pricing, Samsung left that out unfortunately but the Galaxy S8 is expected to start at around $750. Both the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus will be up for pre-order as from tomorrow, March 30 while they will be officially released in the US on April 21. Each pre-order qualifies you to get a free Gear VR headset with a controller and a set of games. The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus will be available in black, gray, and silver in the US while Gold and blue are the options on the international edition.

Samsung has already released a teaser hinting at the launch of the acclaimed Galaxy S8 flagship on March 29 in its self-styled “Galaxy Unpacked” event. The Galaxy S8 was expected to be unveiled at MWC 2017 but that did not happen, instead, the company released a new Galaxy Tab S3 Tab to the disappointment of journalists and fans alike.

Ahead of the March 29 launch event, the Galaxy S8 press render has leaked once again, courtesy of popular Twitter tipster @evleaks. The press render is that of a device with a clean, classic design and top-notch finishing. We must say, indeed, the Galaxy S8 was worth waiting for even though we only get to see the view from the front.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 press render further affirm the design features the Samsung flagship is said to come with, such as an all-screen curved display and all-glass body both at the front and rear. The Galaxy S8 is also going to be tall even though it features a 5.8-inch display. The device is said to use an 18:9 aspect ratio which would help for better display of images. The render also shows the clear absence of a physical home button up front as well as a lack of design bezels.

Samsung is also expected to unveil a Galaxy S8+ variant with a larger 6.2-inch display but having the same design and aspect ratio as the Galaxy S8. Obviously, we don’t expect both flagships to come cheap but we still don’t know their likely press tag. March 29 is just at the corner, so we’ll wait to find out about that when the device goes official.

A fresh set of real live images of Samsung‘s next generation Galaxy S8 flagship have surfaced online giving us a close view of the truly beautiful design Samsung has got in store for us. The Samsung Galaxy S8 has all along been rumored as not featuring a front home button and capacitive buttons below the screen. The Galaxy S8 was instead revealed as using on-screen navigation buttons.

These new set of leaked images are a bit blurry, perhaps to mask watermarks on them thus hiding the real source. One of the images, however, contain a working Galaxy S8 showing the display and a single back button on the bottom right corner of the screen.

That should be just one of the dynamic onscreen buttons, as others may appear depending on the command that needs to be undertaken. We won’t have to wait long to see the complete details of what Samsung has got in store, though. The Galaxy S8 would likely be unveiled at MWC 2017 commencing later this February.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus battery capacity is the subject of one of the latest report emerging from South Korea. According to the report, Samsung has decided to infuse a 3,250mAh battery inside the Galaxy S8 and a 3,750mAh battery inside the S8 Plus.

This revelation is in contrast to the 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh battery capacities tipster Evan Blass had hinted would feature on the Galaxy S8 and its Plus variant respectively. This new leak, however, places both batteries at almost the same capacity with the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge which came in at 3,000mAh  and 3,600mAh . This is despite the curved AMOLED display and larger screen sizes at 5.8 inches and 6.2 inches respectively. Perhaps, the device would come with a better power management considering that there would be a Snapdragon 835 chipset inside.

Also, the batteries are said to have similar dimensions but the source hints at the possibility of the battery capacity getting altered at the long run in order to bring in some increase. But that may not likely happen since the company would want to tread the path of caution, ala Samsung Note 7. The Galaxy S8 is expected to be launched on March 29 while it may go on sale in mid-April.

The latest we are getting about the Samsung Galaxy S8 is that the device will go official on April 21.  The Galaxy S8 was first tipped to be launched in February during the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona, just as the Korean giant looks to shake off the thoughts of the Galaxy Note 7 mishap.

The next generation flagship had earlier been rumored as coming in April, with no specific date mentioned. Other rumors had mentioned April 17th or 18th and even April 21st. But we are still not sure how true this latest April 21 launch date is. It is getting more and more certain by the day, though, that we won’t likely be seeing the Galaxy S8 at MWC 2017. We will not rule out the possibility that Samsung may just spring out a surprise out of the blues and unveil the smartphone next month.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 will take the Galaxy series design to an entirely new level and it comes as Samsung’s first premium device after the botched Galaxy Note 7. The company is hoping the design and entire outlook of the Galaxy S8 will help completely erase the Note 7’s issues from our memories and restore any lost confidence in the brand, so they are taking their time to put together a sleek, reliable device.

The Galaxy S8 is expected with a 5.7-inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) Super AMOLED display, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC inside.  The dvice is also expected to run on Android Nougat out of the box.  A recent leak has revealed that the Galaxy S8 will not feature a physical home button up front but will have its fingerprint sensor mounted at the rear. If this is true, then the Galaxy S8 is unlike any of its siblings specs-wise. The rumor also states that the device will not have a dual-lens camera but rather its plus variant – Galaxy S8 Plus will adopt a dual-lens setup at the rear. The Galaxy S8 Plus is expected as a 6.2-inch phablet which would be launched alongside the Galaxy S8.
