In terms of percentage spread, Apple smartphones accounted for 29.54% of the fake phones recorded while Samsung accounted for 26.44%. Xiaomi accounted for 9.83% and Honor accounted for 6.10%.

A few things that are common with the cloned smartphones is the presence of a 720p display resolution, as well as MediaTek MT6589 processor bundled with a Mali-400 MP GPU onboard. Although the components are not necessarily fake, they are starkly different from what the OEM included in the original version. Interestingly, China’s tech hubs of  Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Beijing ranked among the top three cities where most of the fake smartphones are used in China.

Samsung’s W-series is a line of smartphones with the clamshell design of old. While the design may no longer be in vogue, the latest model in the series, the Samsung W2018 packs modern day specs. Apart from the fact that it has 2 displays, the W2018 is powered by the Snapdragon 835 and has 6GB of RAM making it the most powerful clamshell phone ever released.

Samsung also set another record with the W2018’s camera. The phone’s primary camera has an aperture of F1.5, the widest found on a phone. However, that is not the only special thing about the camera, while it does have an aperture of 1.5, it can switch to a 2.4 aperture size as well depending on the lighting.

While there are phones that can change the size of their apertures, they actually do so electronically. The Samsung W2018 on the other hand varies it mechanically just like a DSLR.

To vary the aperture size in a camera, the amount of light passing through the lens is adjusted by using a polygon or circle with a variable area. The image above should help explain better.

The Samsung W2018 applies the same principle above. When the aperture changes, you can see it when you look at the lens. The first image below is when the aperture is set to 1.5 and the next is when it is 2.4. The camera switches automatically between the apertures depending on the amount of light detected.

Being able to vary the aperture when taking pictures has its benefits. Cameras with large apertures perform well in low-light conditions. While those with smaller apertures may not perform well under low-light, they actually come useful when you want to capture more background details.

Come next year, we expect to see more manufacturers release smartphones whose aperture can be varied mechanically and not just electronically.

Samsung has now unveiled the Samsung W2018 flip phone through a launch event in Xiamen, China. It is a flagship clamshell phone that boasts a premium design along with dual displays. The South Korean company has been launching W series smartphones for raising charity funds for the past ten years and the newly unveiled Samsung W2018 has arrived as a 10^th anniversary edition phone.

Samsung W2018 Specifications and Features

The W2018 sports a metal and glass combination body and it comes in two color choices such as Elegant Gold and Platinum. Its dimensions are 132.2 x 63.2mm. When folded it measures 15.9mm and its weight is 247 grams. The back panel of the phone features Gorilla Glass and it features a zinc alloy biaxial hinge. It features a D-pad and a numeric keypad for navigation.

The Samsung W2018 has a frontal Super AMOLED display of 4.2 inches. It is protected by Gorilla Glass 5 and it carries support for full HD resolution. The inner display of 4.2 inches also supports full HD resolution. The Snapdragon 835 chipset powers the smartphone along with 6 GB of RAM.

The Samsung W2018 comes in two storage models. The Extreme Edition has 64 GB of storage whereas the Collector Edition has 256 GB of storage.

It has a front-facing camera of 5-megaxpixel. The rear side features an industry first f/1.5 aperture 12-megapixel camera. It is coupled with Optical Image Stabilization feature. When there is sufficient light, the camera will switch to f/2.4 aperture and in darker conditions, the f/1.5 aperture will W2018 users to snap stunning photos.

The fingerprint scanner is present very close to rear-facing camera on the back panel of the phone. It also features a Bixby button for activating the voice assistant. It includes a 2,300mAh battery and it is equipped with a USB-C port. The W2018 comes preinstalled with Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS.

Samsung is providing the buyers of W2018 with exclusive concierge services at airport and railway station apart from services like free software fixes, phone cleaning and disinfection, screen replacements at reduced pricing along with an exclusive hotline for VIPs.

The smartphone will be available through China Telecom in China. As of this writing, there is no information available on its pricing.  The design, specs and features of the Samsung W2018 indicates that it will surely arrive with a hefty price tag.

Are you a lover of flip-phones? Then rejoice as the Samsung W2018 has gotten a launch date. The date was revealed on Twitter by a user named @MMDJ_ known for his Samsung related tweets.

According to his post, the Samsung W2018 will be launched in Xiamen, China on December 1. Accompanying the tweet is an official poster that includes the W-series for the past 10 years and celebrity guests invited to the launch which also doubles as a charity event.

For the past 10 years, Samsung has always used the launch of its W-series phone as a platform to raise funds for charity. A follow up post by @MMDDJ_  includes a mash up photo that shows various charity acts and photos from previous years.

The Samsung W2018 will be its most powerful flip phone ever made. Aside its dual 4.2” FHD displays, the phone will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 mobile platform. It will also have 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage.

Although the Samsung W2018 won’t sport dual rear cameras, rumor has it that it will be the first smartphone to have a camera with a F/1.5 aperture. The rear camera is said to be a 12MP sensor and a 5MP front-facing camera is available for selfies.

From the leaked images provided last week, the phone is shown to have its fingerprint scanner on the back just like the other Samsung flagships released this year. However, @MMDDJ_ says it will also have an iris scanner.

The Samsung W2018 will also come with Bixby and have a dedicated button for it. Samsung is expected to launch the Chinese variant of its AI assistant this month ahead of the W2018’s release.

Battery capacity for the phone is 2300mAh and it should come with Android Nougat out of the box. There is no info on the price but there is a high chance it will be pretty expensive. The SM-G9298 flip phone was spotted receiving TENAA certification in May. Since then, the rumor mill has been claiming that Samsung’s clamshell would debut soon. At the end of the previous month, Samsung confirmed that the SM-G9298 would be launching on Aug. 3. The day has arrived and the South Korean company has unveiled the Samsung SM-G9298 flip phone as a successor of the SM-G9198 flip phone that had launched in 2015. The translated text from the Samsung’s Chinese site states that the phone is called World Leading Flagship 8.

The Samsung SM-G9298 has an internal S-AMOLED full HD screen of 4.2 inches. Its external S-AMOLED full HD screen is also of 4.2 inches. It is powered by Snapdragon 820 chipset and 4 GB of RAM. It has an internal storage of 64 GB and the available space for the user is 51.7 GB. It is a dual SIM phone with a hybrid SIM slot that allows users to use either a SIM card or microSD card on the second slot. it is loaded with plenty of Samsung apps including the Samsung Pay and some other apps like Weibo, WeChat, Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

The rear side of the Samsung SM-G9298 features a f/1.7 aperture 12-megapixel camera that is coupled with an LED flash and it also supports UHD 4K resolution video shooting. The frontside of the clamshell features a 5-megapixel f/1.9 aperture lens. Below the rear camera is the fingerprint sensor.

Some of the other sensors present on the phone include a heart rate sensor, a pressure sensor, a hall sensor and some other usual sensors. It also features a hotkey that can be configured according to preference of the user. The screen of the phone also supports Always-on Display.

For connectivity, the SM-G9298 is enabled with features like microUSB 2.0, v4.1 Bluetooth, 4G LTE and Wi-Fi 802.11ac. It is driven by a 2,300mAh battery that carries support for wireless charging. The clamshell phone measures 130.2 x 62.6 x 15.9 mm and its weight is 235 grams. It is built with aviation-grade aluminum alloy.

As of this writing, it seems that the smartphone may not be available outside of China. In China, the Samsung SM-G9298 will be sold through China Mobile. There is no information available on the pricing and release date of Samsung SM-G9298.

Samsung is also rumored to be working on a successor phone for Samsung W2017 clamshell. it is speculated to launch as Samsung W2018 and is rumored to be packed with Snapdragon 835 chipset, 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.

Samsung is rumored to be working on a new flip phone called W2018. Around two months ago, W2018 had appeared on the database of TENAA, China’s regulatory body. Earlier this week, a leakster spilled out some information on the key specs of the clamshell phone. The information revealed by the leakster is quite different from the specs of W2018 that had appeared on TENAA.

The W2018 will be arriving to succeed the Samsung W2017 clamshell from the previous year. According to the leakster, the Samsung W2018 that has a model number of SM-W2018 will be driven by Snapdragon 835 and the chipset will be accompanied with 6 GB of RAM. The native storage of the phone will be of 64 GB. These key specs are present on Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ flagships. Also, these specs will be also present inside the Galaxy Note 8.

In another tweet, the leakster has claimed that Samsung will soon releasing another flagship apart from Galaxy Note 8. However, it will not be a Galaxy branded phone. Almost all the smartphones are sold under Galaxy branding by Samsung. Hence, it seems that the leakster could be talking about the Samsung W2018 that is now rumored to arrive with flagship specs. The  rumor mill is also talking about a Samsung flip phone with model number SM-G9289. Speculations hint that SM-W2018 and SM-G9298 are the same phones.

As mentioned the new information shared by the leakster is quite different from the specs of the W2018 phone that had appeared on TENAA. According to TENAA listing which probably contains older information had revealed that the W2018 would be equipped with a pair of 4.2-inch S-AMOLED screens that will produce full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.

The TENAA listing had also revealed that W2018 would be driven by Snapdragon 821AB chipset, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage and Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It also revealed that it features a 12-megapixel rear camera and a front-facing camera of 5-megapixel. Also, it is packed with a 2,300mAh capacity battery. Interestingly, this TENAA listing is not accessible now.

Clamshell phones are quite popular in some Asian countries like South Korea and China. However, the demand for such phones are quite like less in the U.S. and Europe. Hence, the Samsung W2018 is speculated to arrive in South Korea and China in the near future.
