To mark the New Year of the Snake, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has released a new WeChat emoticon package. The set features 16 uniquely designed emoticons, capturing the festive cheer of the Lunar New Year with vibrant and playful designs. Free for all WeChat users, these emoticons are part of a tradition started by Lei Jun, with similar sets launched in 2021 (Year of the Ox) and 2024 (Year of the Dragon).

The emoticons stand out for their humor and relatability, turning everyday emotions and cultural references into shareable moments. They resonate deeply with users celebrating the New Year, making online conversations more engaging and festive. Beyond their charm, this initiative reflects Lei Jun’s knack for creative marketing. By tapping into a popular platform like WeChat, Lei Jun directly connects with millions of users, reinforcing Xiaomi’s brand identity as approachable, innovative, and culturally in tune.

A genius marketing strategy

This initiative isn’t just fun—it’s a clever marketing strategy. Lei Jun’s personal involvement adds authenticity to Xiaomi’s brand, showing that the CEO understands and values everyday user experiences. The emoticons foster an emotional connection, encouraging users to associate Xiaomi with joy, community, and celebration. Limited-edition items, like the accompanying red envelope cover featuring Lei Jun, further amplify the exclusivity and appeal of the campaign.

Xiaomi’s Global Growth Startegies

Since its founding in 2010, Xiaomi has become a global technology powerhouse. By 2022, 49.2% of the company’s revenue came from international markets, underlining its success outside of China. Xiaomi’s global strategy is built on affordable innovation, offering high-quality, feature-rich products at competitive prices, a model particularly appealing in price-sensitive emerging markets.

The company’s expansion beyond smartphones into an ecosystem of interconnected devices, including smart home appliances and wearables, has further solidified its position. Xiaomi’s strong branding, robust online and offline distribution, and commitment to localizing products and marketing for diverse cultures have been pivotal in driving its success.

By continually investing in technologies like AI, IoT, and 5G, Xiaomi not only meets current consumer demands but also positions itself as a future-ready brand. Campaigns like Lei Jun’s emoticons highlight how the company combines cultural sensitivity with innovation, fostering loyalty and connection in both local and global markets.

Chairwoman, Dong Mingzhu. This comes after Gree reported 2018’s total revenue at 198 billion yuan yesterday. The bet, made by Lei Jun on national television, back in December 2013, said that Xiaomi’s revenues would surpass Gree in the next five years. However, Xiaomi’s revenue for the same period was just 174.915 billion yuan, a good 20 billion yuan less than Gree’s figure.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun

While we still don’t know whether Lei Jun would keep his side of the bet, if he decides to do so, it would cost him 1 billion yuan, and that’s nearly $150 million. At the time of making this bet, it was like David challenging Goliath, with Gree beating Xiaomi in every single department, right from revenue, factories, to even employees. But Lei Jun was betting on the company’s solid online sales model, which has helped the company become one of the top smartphone companies in the world.

It’s worth mentioning that Lei Jun’s initial bet was for just 1 yuan. However, Gree’s Chairwoman, Dong Mingzhu, raised that bet to 1 billion yuan.

Xiaomi or Lei Jun is yet to comment on this matter.

It also recorded a 328% growth in India for the first half of the year, making it the second smartphone manufacturer in India after Samsung.

These new milestones has led the CEO to set a target of 100 million shipments for 2018. CEO Lei Jun says its recent success can be attributed to its research and development efforts to make its smartphones stand out. New innovations has led to smartphones like the bezel-less Mi MIX.

In the past three days, the company released a few teasers which hinted and almost confirmed that the phone will come with a metal body, deca-core processor, dual cameras and OLED display. However, now, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun has officially confirmed the processor on board the upcoming smartphone as well as the presence of dual cameras at the back.

First of all, Lei Jun confirmed that the Redmi Pro will feature the Helio X25 deca-core processor. We had a doubt whether the phone would be using the slightly slower Helio X20, but this confirms that the faster variant is going to end up on the device. Along with the image (above), he asked his fans which other flagships use Helio X25 chipset inside. Well, there are the two popular ones, the flagship Pro 6 and then, the Le 2 Pro. So, looks like he’s trying to say that the new Redmi model will be competing with these two devices.

About an hour later, Lei Jun further took to Weibo to ask another question to his fans: “Some smartphones use two cameras to take pictures, what would you call this technology?”. He even gave three options: Dual cameras, Dual lens and double cameras.

Well, we take this as a confirmation that the upcoming Redmi Pro features a dual camera setup!

Now, we look forward to more details about the rest of the specs of the device, such as the display size, RAM, storage, fingerprint and other features. Expect most of these details to be revealed in the coming days to the launch. Meanwhile, you can read this article for its earlier leaked specs.

However, the company is also expected to announce MIUI 8 as well as the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 wearable at the event. We have seen the new band a couple of times in pictures, and I am sure everyone is excited to meet the new wearable.

However, we have some bad news today.

Today evening, Huami CEO, Huang Wang, revealed via his weibo account that the mass production of the Mi Band 2 was facing problems. This meant that the company couldn’t manufacture the new band in large quantities which is a must for a product like this. Xiaomi’s products are highly popular in China, so in the absence of the availability of stock in large quantities, online sales would be a disaster.

Even Xiaomi’s CEO has confirmed the delay in the release of the new Mi Band 2. He revealed via his Weibo account that increasing the production of the Mi Band 2 wearable was difficult at the moment, which is why he estimates that the new band will be released around a month later. So, if you were keeping high hopes for getting the new wearable from Xiaomi anytime soon, you may be disappointed.

We have already seen the new Mi Band 2 in real life pictures. It will be an upgrade to the earlier generation model with a display on board. The band should also feature a heart rate sensor like the Band 1S.

So, are you disappointed to hear that the Mi Band 2 is delayed?

For a company which started selling smartphones in India just last year, it has made tremendous progress in the country. Now, Lei Jun, the CEO of Xiaomi while talking to WSJ revealed that the company aims to be the top smartphone brand in India in the coming three years. This means, the company will have to overtake the likes of Samsung and Micromax who currently dominate India’s market.

Xiaomi has used the same business model that worked wonders for the company back in China. Lei Jun adds that the company aims to prove that their model works overseas as well, at least in one market. He further said that online models don’t work everywhere. The company has to be a highly influential player in the country or region in order to monetize. Given the immense size of India’s population, an online model should help the company monetize in various ways once they get a significant part of the market share.

Of course, the road to the top won’t be easy, especially since a lot of new Chinese smartphone makers have entered the country in the past few months. This should further intensify the competition in the budget and mid-range segment making this target even more challenging.

Reaching the top in this highly competitive market won’t be easy, so we will have to wait and see what Xiaomi does to achieve its goal within the next three years.
