Google Pixel Fold 2 display sizes leaked, suggesting larger design

Google‘s inaugural Pixel Fold debuted with a unique, compact design that set it apart in the foldable smartphone market. However, new leaks suggest that the upcoming Pixel Fold 2 will depart from its predecessor’s form factor in favor of significantly larger displays.

While the original Pixel Fold’s pocketable design was a charm, a new leak suggests that Google could be changing it’s approach for form factor with the Pixel Fold 2.

Fold 2’s early renders hinted that the smartphone will debut with a 6.4-inch outer display. But accordible to analyst Ross Young (DSCC), the phone will actually be slightly smaller at 6.29 inches.

While still a notable upgrade from the original’s 5.8-inch screen, the size aligns with more mainstream foldable offerings. However, the real expansion looks to be in the internal display.

Young suggests the Pixel Fold 2 will feature an 8.02-inch foldable screen, a substantial increase from its predecessor’s 7.6-inches display. Such a screen real estate will put the Pixel Fold 2 in competition with devices like OnePlus Open which features a 6.31-inch outer display and a 7.82-inch inner display.

Google Pixel Fold 2 Display

Google could be increasing its next foldable size with due to several factors. Firstly, a more expansive foldable screen would significantly improve multitasking and media consumption, making the Pixel Fold 2 a true productivity and entertainment powerhouse.

Additionally, Google could be aiming to address a key criticism of the original Fold – its narrow, cramped feeling when unfolded. While the increased size seem to be a noticeable change in the Pixel Fold 2, there’s still much detail that’s under wraps for now.

Rumors suggest the device will be powered by Google’s Tensor G4 processor, and Young suggests that the displays production is slated to begin in April. That hints at a release timeframe for sometime in fall, though the exact time is still uncertain.

Nvidia to Unveil a New Next-generation AI Chip at the Upcoming GTC Conference

Nvidia will take center stage at the upcoming GTC conference, the industry’s first in-person gathering since the pandemic. All eyes will be on the tech giant as they unveil their latest advancements, with a critical question looming over the heads of customers and investors alike: can Nvidia hold onto its leadership in the AI chip market?

The B100 chip’s price tag is expected to exceed $20,000 – more than its predecessor

Nvidia’s recent boom has been nothing short of meteoric. Their market cap skyrocketed to $2 trillion, putting them in close pursuit of Apple for the number two spot. Analysts predict revenue to double in 2024 driven by the demand for their top-tier AI chips.

Nvidia Partners Tata

But the focus isn’t just on present success; it’s on futureproofing that success. The GTC is expected to unveil the B100, the next generation of Nvidia’s AI processor. This powerhouse chip promises to be the heart of their future AI systems and push the performance bar even higher.

Current demand for Nvidia’s chips already outstrips supply, with developers facing lengthy wait times. The B100’s price tag is likely to climb past its predecessor’s $20,000 mark. However, analysts are concerned regarding Nvidia’s stock price. While it has soared in recent years, some of them are skeptical (and rightfully so) that overly optimistic future earnings projections could be detrimental to the company’s profile.

Beyond hardware, Nvidia’s software strategy is another area to watch. Their CUDA platform locks developers in by offering tools optimized for Nvidia chips. Upcoming CUDA updates are likely to solidify this developer loyalty. Their entry into cloud services will also be something to watch out. And then there’s the matter of China, which adds another layer of complexity. US restrictions on access to Nvidia’s most advanced chips have forced China to develop its own AI hardware. While Chinese rivals offer chips comparable to Nvidia’s A100, they haven’t caught up to the H100. Analysts predict the B100 will widen this gap even further.

One thing is for sure, the GTC conference will be a key event for the company. Stay tuned to Gizmochina for the latest Nvidia coverage when the conference is underway!

The Apple Vision Pro will potentially reach 9 other countries including China, soon

Apple initially launched the Vision Pro spatial computing device in only the US. It was apparently done to cope with the supply chain issues and to simplify the sales process. One notable limitation of the Vision Pro headset at present is that it only supports English. Additionally, its virtual keyboard and autocorrect function is limited to English (US).

Apple Vision Pro

This is apparently fine as the headset is only available in the US at present. But won’t Apple sell it outside the US? Well, there’s a possibility that Apple is preparing for a global launch, or at least in some other countries. And Apple has also confirmed that they will sell it to more countries by the end of 2024.

visionOS code suggests upcoming virtual keyboard support for 12 more languages

  • Cantonese, Traditional
  • Chinese, Simplified
  • English (Australia)
  • English (Canada)
  • English (Japan)
  • English (Singapore)
  • English (UK)
  • French (Canada)
  • French (France)
  • German (Germany)
  • Japanese
  • Korean

We reported last month that this $3,500 headset could potentially launch in China as soon as April or May. Now looking at the languages Apple is working on, MacRumors notes that Apple could potentially launch the Vision Pro in the following countries:

  • China
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Japan
  • Singapore
  • UK
  • France
  • Germany
  • South Korea

The launch is expected to take place before the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, which is expected to take place in June.

Speaking of the headset itself, most of the exterior of the headset is built with metal (aluminum) and laminated glass, packed with cameras and other sensors like LIDAR to map your surroundings with precision. This headset essentially revolutionizes how you interact with your apps, although, there’s still aren’t many available on the platform. As analyst Ming-Chi Kuo notes, the expected global expansion of this headset before WWDC 2024 might be an effort to get more developers working on enriching the visionOS platform with iOS and iPadOS apps with revamped functionalities.

Xiaomi might launch an 8-inch tablet

Xiaomi re-entered the tablet market with the launch of the Xiaomi Pad 5 series. Since then, the company has released several models and all of them feature large-sized displays.

The screens on these devices measure at least 11 inches, except for the Redmi Pad with its slightly smaller 10.65-inch panel. There’s also a model with a whopping 14-inch display (Xiaomi Pad 6 Max 14).

Almost three years after its return to the tablet category, the company might now finally debut a small-screen tablet.

Xiaomi Pad 6

Recently, several Xiaomi executives hinted at the launch of an 8-inch tablet on Weibo. This is the first time we are hearing about such a product from the firm.

So the device is most likely in the development phase if it actually exists. It should pop up in the HyperOS codebase when the firmware builds get ready.

And once when Xiaomi deems it ready for the market, the product should get certified by regulatory agencies. That’s when we might learn more about this tablet.

For now, all we can say is Xiaomi is merely considering releasing a mini tablet. All we can do is wait for the plan to materialize.

For the unaware, all of Xiaomi’s previous tablets had an 8-inch display, except for the Mi Pad 4 Plus. So a small-screen tablet will not be an entirely new product from Xiaomi.

It’s just that 8-inch was once considered a standard size for tablets with huge bezels. But now, with minimal bezels, these tablets fall under the small or mini category. The Apple iPad mini continues to be the best and the only globally available small-screen tablet.

However, a new report from a reliable Korean news source, ETNews, suggests that Samsung is actually planning to launch a more affordable Galaxy Z Fold, not the expensive Ultra variant. According to tipster Tech Reve, this budget-friendly model could be called the Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE.

As you might be aware, “FE” in Samsung’s product portfolio typically stands for “Fan Edition”. These FE edition devices usually offer flagship experiences at a lower price point by making some compromises in certain areas.

The rumored Galaxy Z Fold FE might follow this trend, as the ETNews report indicates that it may not support the S-Pen stylus. This lines up with last month’s rumors about the Ultra Fold 6 model having stylus support while the regular Fold 6 may not.

Regardless of whether it’s the Ultra or affordable FE, all hints point that Samsung is indeed cooking a third foldable device in its factory. Previous reports suggest that this device has been internally coded as “Q6A.”

The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 are expected to be unveiled at an Unpacked event in the third quarter of the year. Samsung might also announce its third foldable device at the same event.

There’s still much we don’t know about the upcoming Samsung foldable, except that the renders of Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 have already surfaced online. We’ll keep you updated as new information becomes available.

The news arrives from known tipster Digital Chat Station, who shared the information on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website). In the online post, the tipster claimed that the Oppo Pad 3 launch may be delayed. To recall, the Oppo Pad 2 was announced back in March 2023. Digital Chat Station further added that the upcoming tablet is currently being tested with flagship processors from both MediaTek and Qualcomm, namely the Dimensity 9300 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 respectively. In other words, it remains to be seen what processor finally makes it on this high end tablet. For those unaware, the Oppo Pad 2 was released with the Dimensity 9000 SoC, so the MediaTek chipset could be preferred.

LG Display is expected to manufacture nearly 6 million units this year, from which LG Electronics will utilize 3.5-4 million. LG Display will ship the rest to other manufacturers such as Sony and Samsung. According to the market research agency, Samsung Electronics will purchase a significant proportion of the rest of the LG panels.

Notably, Samsung Display is also one of the big players in the display manufacturing industry, and the company will reportedly manufacture 1.4 million QD-OLED panels this year. Among these, Samsung Electronics themselves will use 1.1 million (nearly the full of it) and they will share the rest with Sony. So, it seems from the research data, that Samsung is focusing on manufacturing QD-OLED panels and fulfilling their demand of WOLED panels with supplements from LG Display. Notably, Samsung is expected to manufacture nearly 2 million OLED TVs this year, which is reportedly double as compared to last year.

Market research reveals that the overall OLED TV sales are expected to reach 6.3 million units this year, with Samsung and LG accounting for 5.5 million units. In summary of the research data, Samsung will utilize LG’s B series and C series TV-level WOLED panels in its OLED TVs but will continue to use in-house QD-OLED panels for its high-end TV products like the S95D that was unveiled at CES this year.
