Here’s why the Galaxy S24 AI-powered Portrait shots look more natural

Samsung recently unveiled the Galaxy S24 series smartphone and it features several improvements from its predecessors even though Samsung has retained the same hardware for the device. Although the design of the smartphone has not changed, Samsung has made the screens brighter, provided improved and more durable batteries, as well as ramped up camera quality. The Galaxy S24 offers portrait shots that are as natural as they can get. The smartphone uses improved AI algorithms to achieve a more natural-looking blur effect.

Galaxy S24 Ultra

The Galaxy S24 features improved AI algorithms for a more natural-looking blur effect

The Samsung Galaxy S24, according to Samsung’s engineers in a recently monitored Community Forum website, uses improved AI processing power to detect subjects and increase the depth effect. The blur effect is also improved on things that are in front of the main subject. The combination of these improvements makes the image captured by the smartphone look like it was shot with a DSLR camera.

The improvements also apply to portrait videos shot by the Galaxy S24. The videos have improved AI model, as well as stabilization and zoom capabilities. In 2023, Samsung increased the resolution of portrait videos to 4K at a frame rate of 30fps. The company is using two cameras on the Galaxy S24 Ultra to measure the distance between the subject and the background, for more natural blur effects. The Galaxy S24 also supports greater zoom functionality while capturing portrait videos. The smartphone is capable of achieving continuous zoom from 1x to 3x.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 series includes the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. The Galaxy S24 lineup could eclipse the pre-order performance of the Galaxy S23 from last year. Total annual sales are predicted to reach 36 million by the end of 2024. If the predictions ring true, then the Galaxy S24 will be the first flagship model since the Galaxy S10 in 2019 to cross the 30 million milestone.

TikTok Testing 30-Minute Video Uploads to Confront YouTube Dominance

ByteDance is preparing TikTok to take on YouTube by bringing 30-minute-long videos to the platform. This marks a departure from the platform’s original format of short-form videos. The new feature is spotted on the iOS Beta App and Android App too in the UK by social media consultant Matt Navarra.

TikTok is widely known for its short videos. It initially started with 15 seconds and later updated the video limit to a minute. In recent years, considering the demand, the limit was revised again and expanded to three minutes, and later to 10 minutes. Before the 30-minute video limit, the company had already tested the 15-minute videos, but the limit is currently not effective on TikTok.

TikTok’s 30-minute Limit Coming Soon

Now, to attract more users and content creators to its platform, Tiktok is testing a 20-minute limit. It could be seen as a direct competition for YouTube, which allows any duration of video. This expansion could open up opportunities for posting full episodes of TV shows and other long-form content on TikTok.

Being a platform popular for its short videos, TikTok will offer the ability for users to fast-forward videos by tapping and holding the right side of the video. A similar feature was seen when TikTok debuted the 15-minute videos a few months ago. Moreover, TikTok has already prepared for longer videos with the recent addition of horizontal full-screen mode.

It would be interesting to see how the users react to the long videos on the platform, which is popularly known for short videos. However, it remains uncertain when or if this feature will be widely launched for all users.

Apart from TikTok, ByteDance is expanding its footprint across the globe, with new offices coming up in Canada, Australia, and the US. The company’s sales were around $110 billion in 2023, slightly surpassing those of Tencent Holding.

ASML reports strong Q4 2023 performance amidst export restrictions challenges

ASML Holding NV, the world’s leading provider of lithography systems crucial for chip manufacturing, has reported robust financial performance in the fourth quarter of 2023, despite facing challenges from export restrictions impacting its sales to China.

In the financial arena, ASML announced a 9% increase in net profit, totaling €2.0 billion ($2.2 billion), with sales surpassing analyst expectations at €7.2 billion. The company received record orders exceeding €9 billion, demonstrating a significant uptick from the previous quarter. Notably, orders for the cutting-edge “extreme ultraviolet” (EUV) machines amounted to €5.6 billion, reflecting the strong demand for advanced lithography systems.

source: ASML website

Looking ahead to 2024, ASML maintains a cautious outlook despite the impressive quarterly performance, anticipating flat sales growth. CEO Peter Wennink highlighted uncertainties in the semiconductor market recovery but pointed out positive signs, such as improving chip demand and higher factory utilization rates.

ASML’s dominance in the global market for lithography systems, essential in chip manufacturing, is evident, with positive remarks dispelling bearish arguments regarding the technology progression outlook. Analysts anticipate a potential outlook revision later in the year as end markets continue to recover.

However, the impact of export restrictions on sales to China in 2024 is a notable concern. New U.S. and Dutch export restrictions, implemented in 2023, are expected to affect up to 15% of ASML’s sales to China, impacting its status as the third-largest market. China’s demand for lithography machines decreased from 46% in the previous quarter to 39% in Q4 2023, emphasizing the impact of these restrictions.

Despite challenges, ASML’s unique position as the sole producer of equipment required for manufacturing the most advanced semiconductors positions the company as a bellwether for the overall health of the semiconductor industry. The recent surge in ASML shares to their highest level since November 2021, up 6.7% to €754.30, reflects the market’s positive response to the company’s performance.

ASML’s Q4 2023 results showcase resilience in the face of export restrictions, with analysts closely monitoring the potential for an outlook revision later in the year as industry recovery continues.

[Exclusive] Google Pixel 9 Pro case leak further confirms Pill-Shaped Design

Google usually holds a launch event around October every year to announce its latest Pixel series smartphones. With the Pixel 8 series being quite successful, the brand is already working on the next iteration, known as the Pixel 9 series. CAD renders of the Pixel 9 Pro recently emerged online. Now, we have managed to get our hands on the case images of the Pixel 9 Pro.

The case images come from an industry source who has claimed that this is the final design of the Pixel 9 Pro. The rendered image again confirms the horizontal pill-shaped came module that was featured in a leak yesterday. Three camera lenses are visible in the renders along with a sensor and an LED flash tucked in the right corner of the camera island.

In addition to the updated camera island, the Pixel 9 Pro is expected to showcase flat edges, possibly featuring a flat display. The recently released Galaxy S24 smartphones also adopt a comparable flat design, reminiscent of recent iPhones. This design shift, more visually appealing than the curved design of the Pixel 8 Pro, may sacrifice some comfort in hand-holding for the sake of aesthetics. The SIM tray will be moving from the left side to the top of the device, and the volume rocker and power buttons will be present on the right.

As per a leaked design, the smartphone’s dimensions are projected to be 162.7 x 76.6 x 8.5mm. It is expected to sport a 6.5-inch flat display, slightly smaller than the 6.7-inch screen seen in the Pixel 8 Pro. The device is likely to be powered by the upcoming Tensor G4 chip, featuring CPU cores derived from Samsung’s Exynos 2400 SoC and a GPU designed by Google. Meanwhile, the Pixel 10 series is rumored to house the Tensor G5 chip, purportedly manufactured by TSMC based on Google’s in-house designs.

Samsung’s Plan to Lease Russian Factory marks a Shift in Strategy Amid Global Tensions

Samsung Electronics is reportedly contemplating a significant shift in its Russian operations. Amid the ongoing global business adjustments following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Samsung is exploring the idea of leasing its TV and monitor manufacturing facility in Kaluga, Russia. This news, initially covered by South Korean media and further reported by various other outlets, reflects a changing landscape for international companies operating in Russia.

Samsung previously announced that it has stopped shipments to the country

The potential lease of Samsung’s factory comes after numerous global enterprises have either halted sales or paused their activities in Russia. Samsung itself announced in March 2022 that it had stopped shipments to the country. This move by Samsung, a titan in the electronics industry, highlights the complex decisions multinational corporations face in today’s geopolitical climate.

Samsung Data Breach UK

The local electronics wholesaler VVP Group is reported to be a key player in this new chapter for the Kaluga factory. According to a Kommersant report, VVP Group might soon start producing equipment under its own brand, as well as for other companies, using Samsung’s facility. This development could mark a new era for the factory, transitioning from a Samsung-centric operation to a hub for various electronic brands.

While Samsung has not officially commented on these developments, the implications of such a decision are significant. Leasing the factory to a local company like VVP Group could ensure the facility remains operational and preserves jobs, while aligning with the changing business and political environment.

This move, if confirmed, could be seen as Samsung’s strategic adaptation to maintain a presence in the Russian market indirectly. It highlights the delicate balance companies must strike between business interests and geopolitical sensitivities. The electronics giant’s decision to lease, rather than sell or shut down the factory, could set a precedent for other multinational companies navigating similar challenges.

Samsung Considering An Entry-Level Variant Of The Galaxy Z Fold 6 To Gain Market Share

A fresh report straight out of South Korea reveals that Samsung is considering an entry-level model of its next-generation foldable phone. However, this isn’t the first time we are hearing about the South Korean brand rumored to be working on an affordable foldable. Last year, it was reported that the company could introduce Galaxy Z FE foldables after this year’s Z Fold 6. The latest development has a convincing reason for Samsung to launch a cheaper foldable variant.

Samsung may launch an entry-level variant of the next Galaxy Z Fold

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5

As per Korean publication The Elec, Samsung is considering developing a low-cost version of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6. This does not mean that the South Korean brand will ditch the regular Z Fold 6. But it may just get a cheaper variant with toned-down specifications. It is said to debut in the second half of 2024 most likely along with the next-generation Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 at the company’s next Unpacked event in August. Hence, this could hint at the possibility of three foldables in total this year.

According to the report, the move to launch a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold is attributed to Samsung’s market share in China’s foldable smartphone segment. It is dominated by local players and the South Korean brand is in third place commanding a 19 percent share behind Huawei and Honor. The company has consistently clocked double-digit market share in the country’s foldable segment and this is also more than slab phones segment with less than 1 percent share. The entry-level Galaxy Z Fold 6 may result in to increased shipments or market share for Samsung in China.

The report also adds that Samsung is going ahead of the Z Fold line instead of the Z Flip because the later that have launched to date are established and selling much better. The Fold has a better potential in terms of form factor and productivity.

Samsung currently dominates the global foldable smartphone market. The cheaper version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 would give it an edge against its competitors. However, this move could also come at a cost adversely affecting Samsung’s profitability. This is due to the uncertain economic conditions and concentrated demand on premium products.
