Xiaomi has invested 10 billion yuan and 3,400 engineers into building its first electric car: Lei Jun

Xiaomi is setting its sights on the automotive industry, with plans to launch its first electric car in the first half of 2024. The company’s founder, Lei Jun, recently expressed his ambitious goals for the venture in an interview with Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

“I came into the car building with an aim to win,” Lei said. He outlined two key principles guiding Xiaomi’s automotive ambitions: leveraging proven technologies from established carmakers and investing heavily in research and development.

Xiaomi isn’t taking a traditional approach to car building. Lei revealed that the company has dedicated over 10 times the resources typically invested in a first car model by a conventional automaker. This translates to a team of 3,400 engineers and an R&D budget exceeding 10 billion yuan (approximately $1.4 billion).

“We invested 3,400 engineers on the first model, and the whole R&D investment was more than RMB 10 billion. So we are making use of more than ten times the industry’s investment,” he said.

Despite his confidence, Lei acknowledges the challenges ahead. He expressed concern about potential production bottlenecks and long wait times, which could damage Xiaomi’s reputation if not managed effectively.

“I’m more worried that if everyone buys it, resulting in a long wait time, say one or two years, we’ll get a bad rap,” Lei said.

While the official unveiling of the car is still to come, some details have already been revealed. The model dubbed the SU7, is a sporty-looking four-door sedan that surpasses the size of both Tesla’s Model 3 and Nio’s ET5. It will be available with two battery options offering ranges of up to 800 kilometers on a single charge.

The electric car market is already crowded with established players and ambitious startups. Xiaomi’s success will depend on its ability to deliver a car that stands out in terms of performance, technology, and, perhaps most importantly, price.

However, the pricing and availability details are yet to become official. In a new teaser, the company officially unveiled some additional details about the smartphone, like the presence of a 6000 mAh graphite anode battery and IP68 waterproof and dustproof certification.

Redmi Note 14 in works, tipped to rival the Realme 12 series

Redmi is set to launch the Redmi Note 13 series of smartphones globally on Jan. 4 India will be the first market outside China to receive the Note 13 lineup on that date. Subsequent releases are planned for other markets. As the global market prepares for the Note 13 series, a Chinese tipster has claimed that the brand is preparing to unveil the Note 14 series for the domestic market.

Realme 12 Pro vs Redmi Note 14 Pro likely to happen soon

Recent reports have revealed that Realme plans to unveil the Realme 12 series of smartphones in the first quarter of 2024. The Realme 12 lineup is likely to include multiple models, but the rumor mill hasn’t revealed significant details yet. However, reports have provided key details about the Realme 12 Pro series.

The Realme 12 Pro and 12 Pro+ are expected to feature the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset. Speculations suggest that the rear camera setup of the Realme 12 Pro will include a 32-megapixel Sony IMX709 telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom. The Realme 12 Pro+, on the other hand, is said to be equipped with a 64-megapixel OmniVision OV64B periscope telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

According to a Chinese leaker, the Realme 12 series, particularly the Pro lineup, will face competition from the Redmi Note 14 series. The Redmi Note 13 series was unveiled in China in September, so the company will likely maintain a six-month gap before announcing the Redmi Note 14 lineup. This suggests that it could debut in the first quarter of 2024, possibly in February. The tipster claimed that the Note 14 series will have a curved-edge display, some flagship-level features, and the same price range as the Realme counterparts. The Note 14 series will also decentralize some of the camera features that are available on the company’s flagship smartphones.

Unfortunately, there is currently no information available about the Redmi Note 14 series’ specifications. With the rival brand aiming to introduce telephoto and periscope telephoto cameras on the 12 Pro series at a price of around 2,000 Yuan (~$280), it is possible that the Redmi Note 14 Pro could feature a telephoto camera, while the Note 14 Pro+ could have a periscope telephoto camera. It is too early to speculate on the specifications of the Note 14 lineup, so it is advisable to wait for further reports before making any assumptions.

Oppo Find X7 series camera specifications detailed in a new leak

Oppo‘s upcoming Find X7 series, expected for next year, might come in three variants: Find X7, X7 Pro, and X7 Ultra. Leaked information has already given us a sneak peek at the Pro and the standard Find X7. Now, tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) has shared details about the camera specifications for all three models.

As per the leak, the standard Find X7 sports a triple camera system. Its main sensor is a 50MP Sony LYT-808, joined by a 50MP ultra-wide lens and a 64MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. This configuration closely resembles the OnePlus 12‘s camera setup.

In contrast, both the Find X7 Pro and Find X7 Ultra are expected to have four 50MP sensors in their camera setup. One of them is the new 50MP Sony LYT900 primary sensor, which is a one-inch sensor with individual pixels measuring 1.6μm. Additionally, there is a 50MP ultrawide lens.

These models will also include dual-telephoto lenses, with one being a 50MP IMX890 periscope telephoto with 3X optical zoom and another 50MP periscope telephoto with 6X optical zoom. Recently, a schematic shared by tipster Ice Universe also showed us the arrangement of these dual-telephoto sensors on the Find X7 Pro.

So, this means both the Find X7 Pro and Find X7 Ultra will share similar camera specifications and are rumored to feature the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. Meanwhile, the standard model will get the Dimensity 9300. An exclusive feature for the Ultra model is likely to be the satellite connectivity feature, as suggested by DCS.

The Oppo Find X7 series should launch early next year, with the launch date expected to be announced soon. While the Chinese market is the first to receive the new series, we’ll keep you updated on the latest news and rumors as they surface.

ByteDance Justifies Use of OpenAI Technology in a Competitive AI Landscape

ByteDance, the parent company of the popular short video app TikTok, recently faced scrutiny over its use of OpenAI’s technology. This issue brings to the forefront the intricate balance between innovation and ethical use of technology in the fast-paced world of AI development.

ByteDance clarified that only a small group of engineers used OpenAI API

Earlier, allegations surfaced that ByteDance was using OpenAI’s technology to create a competing service. This claim was met with a firm denial from ByteDance, stating their usage was in line with OpenAI’s service terms. They clarified that their use of the OpenAI API was part of an experimental model by a small group of engineers, which was never intended for public release.

OpenAI

The situation underscores a broader trend in the tech world, where the boundaries of collaboration and competition often blur. ByteDance’s statement emphasized their commitment to adhering to OpenAI’s terms, particularly the clause against using outputs to develop rival models. Despite this assurance, OpenAI temporarily suspended ByteDance’s access to its services, pending further investigation.

This incident sheds light on the competitive landscape of AI technology. Chinese companies, including ByteDance, have been striving to catch up with their global counterparts in the generative AI space. The emergence of OpenAI’s advanced models like GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 Turbo has set a high bar, intensifying the race for AI supremacy.

China’s burgeoning AI scene is not without its challenges. The country has witnessed a surge in the development of local large language models (LLMs), leading to concerns about resource wastage and the need for more originality in AI development. This situation calls for a thoughtful approach to innovation, where respecting intellectual property and fostering genuine advancement go hand in hand.

ByteDance’s case is a pivotal moment in the AI industry, highlighting the fine line between inspiration and imitation. It serves as a reminder that as technology advances, so too must the ethical standards guiding its use.

Steam Cuts Support for Older Versions of Windows! Last 10 Days

Despite Microsoft releasing Windows 11 just three years ago, rumors about Windows 12 are already everywhere. According to the latest reports, the company is set to unveil the new version of the popular operating system in the second half of 2024. This move is likely to declare Windows 11 officially outdated, marking the end for older versions. In line with this decision, numerous companies have already discontinued support for older Windows versions. Now, Now, Steam does the same thing by cutting support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Here are the details…

Game Over for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 on Steam, Time to Upgrade!

In March 2023, Steam, the world’s largest online game store, announced that it would stop supporting certain operating systems. Starting from January 1 2024, Steam will no longer be compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. Users are required to switch to a computer operating on Windows 10, Windows 11, or the upcoming Windows 12.

Steam, Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 support

Although the announcement surprised everyone at the time, it wasn’t taken too seriously since there was still a nine-month deadline. However, time has swiftly passed, and now there is less than 15 days remaining before the deadline. According to Steam’s Hardware and Software Survey in November 2023, only 1% of Steam users are still using older versions of Windows.

While this number may not seem high at first glance, it’s worth noting that the estimated total number of Steam users as of December 2023 is 1.2 billion. In this case, 1% of Steam’s total users accounts for approximately 12 million people. If you’re still using older versions like Windows 7 because of nostalgia, habit, financial constraints, or other reasons, and you love playing games, it’s a good idea to upgrade to the latest version as soon as you can.

Steam

This is especially important if you want to continue enjoying your favorite games without any disruptions. For example, PUBG: Battlegrounds recently announced that it won’t be playable on older Windows versions. This serves as a clear indication that there won’t be any delays from Steam’s end.
