OnePlus Open Indian price & sale date revealed ahead of Oct 19 launch

OnePlus has announced that its first foldable smartphone known as the OnePlus Open will be launching globally on October 19. Now, tipster Abhishek Yadav has leaked the pricing and first sale date of the device in the Indian market.

As per Abhishek, the OnePlus Open is expected to launch for ₹1,39,999 in India. Additionally, the tipster has also claimed that the first sale of the smartphone will take place on October 27, 2023.

China Tightens Control on AI Chatbots: What does it Mean for Innovation?

China has recently rolled out draft guidelines aimed at tightening its grip on generative artificial intelligence (AI) services. The National Information Security Standardisation Technical Committee, responsible for setting IT security norms, released the draft highlighting two primary concerns: safeguarding the training data and regulating large language models (LLMs) used in generative AI services.

The guidelines necessitate that AI developers use only authorized data for training and adhere to security checks to prevent data breaches and copyright infringement. This is an important step in controlling the quality and legality of the data that feeds into these algorithms. However, the fine print also mentions a “blacklist system” to block any training materials containing more than 5% of illegal or harmful content as defined by the nation’s cybersecurity laws.

Artificial Intelligence

While these rules seem aimed at ensuring that AI services generate responsible and legal content, they also raise important questions about innovation and free speech. The guidelines indicate that the algorithms should be based on models filed and licensed by authorities. This could limit the room for developers to experiment and innovate, possibly stifling the growth of a technology that has broad applications.

Moreover, the regulations add another layer to the government’s censorship arm. In a country where “illegal content” often includes sensitive political topics like the status of Taiwan, there is a concern that AI models may be levered to propagate a single narrative. During internal tests, Chinese chatbots have been observed to give a variety of responses when asked about Taiwan’s status, some refusing to respond and ending the conversation.

Tesla leads the charge as China’s Electric Vehicle Exports surge by 107% in September

In a remarkable surge, China’s passenger electric vehicle exports skyrocketed by 107% year-on-year, reaching approximately 91,000 units in September. Leading the pack was Tesla, with a substantial shipment of 30,566 units from its Shanghai factory, as revealed by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) figures released on Wednesday. 

Following closely were BYD and SAIC, with 28,039 and 12,678 units respectively, showcasing the competitive landscape of China’s electric vehicle market. Geely and Smart, a joint venture between Geely and Daimler, contributed 5,026 and 2,146 EVs to the overseas markets. Notably, Xpeng Motors marked its debut on the list this year, exporting 766 EVs in September.

This surge in electric vehicle exports occurred amid a 4.7% increase in car sales in China compared to the same month last year, with 2.04 million passenger vehicles sold in September, according to official CPCA data. New energy vehicles (NEVs) played a significant role, constituting 36.6% of total car sales, a 22.1% increase from the previous year. 

The rise in NEV sales was instrumental in several local brands achieving record-breaking sales figures. September, traditionally a strong month for car sales due to the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, saw increased purchases, further fueled by a downturn in the property market. With real estate investments waning, consumers turned to car purchases, boosting the automotive industry.

While Tesla dominated the EV market, its market share in China’s EV segment dipped to 9.89% in the third quarter, compared to 12.98% in the previous quarter and 9.93% a year ago. Despite this, the company’s performance remained robust. BYD, reported a remarkable milestone, selling a record 287,454 NEVs in September. Li Auto, also experienced substantial growth, delivering 36,060 vehicles, reflecting a staggering 212.7% year-on-year increase.

Cui Dongshu, the Secretary-General of CPCA, commented on the shifting consumer sentiment. He noted that the slowdown in China’s economy didn’t dampen enthusiasm for car purchases, with more people opting for cars over property investments. This trend, coupled with the surge in electric vehicle exports, underscores the evolving dynamics of China’s automotive industry, where electric vehicles are becoming increasingly integral to the market’s growth and competitiveness.

Not only is 5G predicted to be much speedier than 4G—reaching speeds up to 10 gigabits per second. It will also have lower latency, which means that data will be transmitted more quickly.

The report, titled “Who Owns Core 5G Patents?”, examined which standard-essential patents (SEPs) are best positioned to dominate in the burgeoning 5G market. SEPs are patents that are essential to the implementation of a technical standard, such as 5G. LexisNexis ranked Huawei, Qualcomm, and Samsung as the top three SEP holders, respectively, in terms of quantity and quality. Ericsson, Nokia, LG Electronics, ZTE, Oppo, NTT, and InterDigital rounded out the top ten.

The report also found that the US is the top region for 5G patents, with more than 28,000 granted, followed by China on around 26,000 and Europe with almost 15,000. “Huawei’s leadership in the 5G patent race is a testament to its significant investment in research and development,” said Muzammil Hassan, co-author of the report. “However, it is important to note that patent ownership does not guarantee commercial success. Other factors, such as product quality, customer relationships, and government support, will also play a role.”

Huawei’s dominance in 5G patents has been a source of concern for some governments, who fear that it could give the company too much control over the development and deployment of 5G networks. In recent years, the US and other countries have taken steps to restrict Huawei’s access to markets and technologies.

Since the product is the brand’s first, it received a wide reception among Mi fans as the crowdfunding exercise ended in a short while with the product entirely sold out.

The crowdfunding exercise took place simultaneously on Xiaomi Mall and the Youpin platform. This brings the estimated total sales to over 2.38 million Yuan ($325,755). While the entire number of backers is not known, the total sales suggest the product received backing from almost 8,000 persons.

This doesn’t come as a surprise, the Smart Home Panel is expected to become yet another popular product from Xiaomi.

As a reminder, the Xiaomi Smart Home Panel is a wall-mounted control screen featuring a built-in XiaoAI voice control system, primarily for Xiaomi’s smart home gadgets. The gadget packs a 3.23-inch touch screen, voice control, and physical buttons for manual operation. It serves as a Bluetooth Mesh gateway for up to 100 devices, controlling over 5,500 smart devices and supporting custom smart scenes.

This suggests that the new PS5 slim might offer an additional 141 GB of storage compared to the current PS5 models. Although it’s a letdown that gamers won’t receive the full 1TB of storage, an extra 141GB is certainly a beneficial enhancement, especially considering we’re paying the same price for the version with a disc drive. This will provide gamers with more room to store their beloved games and other content.

It’s also important to note that the new PS5 slim will still support SSD storage expansion. This means that gamers can add their own NVMe SSD to the console if they need more storage space. The new PS5 slim is expected to be released in late 2023. It will be available in two versions: one with an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc drive and one without.

A Chinese tipster on Weibo claims that Huawei will be launching a new Kirin 8 series chipset later this year (Via GSMArena). Although the tipster didn’t specify the name of the chip, an earlier leak revealed the upcoming Nova 12 smartphone with an unreleased Kirin 830 chip. However, it looks like only the vanilla model will get this alleged chip, while the Nova 12 Pro will feature the Kirin 9000s, the same chip that powers the Huawei Mate 60 series.

This new chip is supposed to support 5G connectivity, which makes one wonder who will manufacture it. Since US companies that hold the patent and 5G technology are restricted from trading with Huawei, it makes you think how Huawei is managing to produce new chips. The same questions were raised when the company launched the Kirin 9000s. Rumors suggested it was manufactured by SMIC. Some even say the Kirin 9000s is a 14nm chip that was modified to be 7nm.

In any case, the Nova 12, which is supposed to be powered by the Kirin 830 chip, is rumored to come with a curved 120Hz OLED panel with second-generation Kunlun protection. It might pack a 4,800 mAh battery with support for 88W charging. TSMC granted indefinite waiver by US for Chip Equipment exports to China

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chip maker, has received an indefinite exemption from US trade sanctions on mainland China. This exemption enables TSMC to continue acquiring advanced chip equipment for its operations in China, marking a pivotal moment amid ongoing global supply chain challenges.

The United States Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has advised TSMC to apply for the “validated end-user” (VEU) program. Under this program, the chipmaker can receive exports without separate approvals, easing restrictions on foreign chipmakers operating in China. TSMC expressed confidence in obtaining a permanent authorization through the VEU process, streamlining its operations.

This move follows the Biden administration’s October 2022 export controls, which aimed to limit China’s access to certain semiconductor chips made worldwide with US tools. Last year, TSMC secured a one-year authorization, covering its factory in Nanjing, China, producing 28-nanometer chips. The recent waiver extension alleviates uncertainties surrounding TSMC’s operations, enabling the company to plan its manufacturing processes effectively.

South Korea’s Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have also received similar indefinite waivers, allowing them to supply US chip equipment to their China factories without separate approvals. These developments reflect a nuanced approach by the United States, balancing national security concerns with the complex interdependence of the global technology sector.

TSMC’s operations in mainland China, including its facilities in Shanghai and Nanjing, will continue without disruption. While specific details about the waiver’s duration were not disclosed, the industry anticipates a year-long extension, aligning with previous patterns.

This decision comes in the wake of the Biden administration’s efforts to address the challenges posed by emerging technologies.

The Ride has an aluminum frame and is pretty lightweight at 34lbs.

The Ride is equipped with a 750W rear hub motor that delivers a peak power output of 1,200W. Pedaling activities are enhanced with the Gates Carbon Belt Drive system coordination of the wheel movement. The Gates system makes the bike to be largely maintenance-free and a silent ride. The Ride has a battery capacity of 36V. 11.4Ah which delivers an assistance range of 100 miles (~161km). The range of the Ride is very impressive and is due to improved battery tech featured in the e-bike.

Teleport Ride

The Ride has a top pedal assist speed of 28mph and the ride experience is made smoother with an in-built torque sensor. A thumb throttle is also featured on the Ride for riding without any pedaling activity. The electronics in the Teleport Ride, as well as the wiring, are placed within the e-bike’s frame, enhancing its sleekness. There are multiple ride modes available with the bike, with the Eco mode offering the top range of 100 miles.

The Teleport Ride has puncture-resistant 700x38c tires and Tektro hydraulic brakes. It has a payload capacity of about 290lbs and an OLED display on the handlebars helps the rider to monitor ride parameters and toggle the modes.

The Teleport Ride is priced at $1,899 on Indiegogo. Teleport expects the impressive specs and affordable price of the Ride to deliver a successful Indiegogo campaign. The earliest deliveries will be in February 2024 if the campaign achieves its target.

The Yamaha Tricera is a model that sits between a motorcycle and a car. It is viewed as an autocycle in some areas. However, it bears a closer semblance of a car than a motorcycle.

The Tricera comes with a unique design that, according to Yamaha, sets it apart from both motorcycles and cars. The delta trike design of the Tricera incorporates two front wheels and a single rear wheel. The Yamaha Tricera has a three-wheeled steering. A rack and pinion steering in the front is supported by the rear wheel pivot for greater maneuverability.

The design of the Yamaha Tricera has an open-top structure that omits doors. Seat bolsters are used instead to secure the rider. The Tricera features both automatic and manual steering modes for the rear wheel. The manual modes, according to Yamaha, give a sense of accomplishment for riders still learning the ropes.

TSMC to produce cutting-edge Chips in second Japan plant with government subsidies

In a significant move to bolster its semiconductor industry, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is set to produce 6-nanometer chips at its second plant in Japan. This new facility, located at TSMC’s Kumamoto site in southwestern Japan, represents a total investment of $13.3 billion. The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry is reportedly considering subsidies of up to $6 billion to support this venture.

These advanced 6-nanometer chips mark a significant leap for Japan, which currently manufactures products in the 40-nanometer range. The demand for cutting-edge chips, especially for 5G and artificial intelligence applications, is rapidly increasing globally.

Construction of the second plant is slated to begin next summer, with mass production expected to commence in 2027. TSMC aims to produce approximately 60,000 units per month, manufacturing both 6-nanometer and 12-nanometer logic semiconductors. Major customers, including Sony Group, are set to benefit from this production.

The Japanese government, as part of its economic stimulus package, is planning substantial subsidies for the semiconductor sector. The government is requesting a total of 3.35 trillion yen for this fiscal year’s supplementary budget. These funds will be allocated to special-purpose funds, supporting post-5G technology, advanced semiconductors, and aiding companies like TSMC and Japanese chipmaker Rapidus.

Furthermore, Intel is set to receive 50 billion yen in subsidies for research and development focusing on back-end processes like assembly and packaging. Collaborating with Japanese semiconductor material manufacturers, Intel aims to develop automated packaging technology for high-tech chips. Sony, a key supplier of image sensors for Apple’s iPhone, will receive 310 billion yen in subsidies to ramp up production and meet rising global demands.

Apart from individual company support, Japan plans to invest approximately 100 billion yen in research for automotive and AI chip design, strengthening crucial sectors. An additional 10 billion yen will be invested in training highly skilled workers, ensuring the availability of a qualified workforce for the expanding semiconductor industry.

This move comes amidst global efforts to boost domestic chip production. The U.S. and the EU have also earmarked significant funds for their semiconductor industries, with TSMC and Intel already announcing new production plans in various countries, supported by European subsidies.
